My Old Kentucky Home by Stephen Foster words lyrics best popular old American folk sing along songs
Video Copyright (c) 2016 by Charles E. Szabo

The sun shines bright in the old Kentucky home.
'Tis summer, the people are gay,
The corn top's ripe and the meadow's in the bloom
While the birds make music all the day.
The young folks roll on the little cabin floor,
All merry, all happy and bright.
By 'n by hard times comes a-knocking at the door,
Then my old Kentucky home, good night.

Weep no more my lady, oh! weep no more today!
We will sing one song for the old Kentucky home,
For the old Kentucky home far away.

My Old Kentucky Home, Good-Night! is an anti-slavery ballad[1] originally written by Stephen Foster, probably composed in 1852.[2] It was published as in January 1853 by Firth, Pond, & Co. of New York.[2][3] Foster likely composed the song after having been inspired by the narrative of popular anti-slavery novelist Harriet Beecher Stowe's Uncle Tom's Cabin, while likely referencing imagery witnessed on his visits to the Bardstown, Kentucky farm called Federal Hill.[4] In Foster's sketchbook, the song was originally entitled Poor Uncle Tom, Good-Night!, but was altered by Foster as My Old Kentucky Home, Good-Night!. • Kentucky Confederate Battle Anthem

    3:01

    Artist: Bobby Horton

    Verse One:

In the year of sixty one we left our native land
for we could not bend our spirits to a tyrants stern command
And we rallied to our Buckner while our hearts were sad and sore
To offer our blood for freedom as our fathers did before

    Chorus:
And we'll march march march to the music of the drum
we were driven forth in exile from our old kentucky home.

    Verse two:
When first the Southern flag whirled its folds upon the air,
Its stars had hardly gathered till Kentucky's sons were there,
And they swore a solemn oath as they sternly gathered round
They would only live as freeman in the dark and bloody ground.

    Chorus:
And we'll march march march to the music of the drum
we were driven forth in exile from our old kentucky home.

    Verse three:
With Buckner as our leader and Morgan in the Van,
We Will plant the flag of freedom in our fair and happy land
We will drive the tyrants minions to the Ohio's rolling flood,
And will dye her waves in crimson with coward Yankee blood.

    Chorus:
And we'll march march march to the music of the drum
we were driven forth in exile from our old kentucky home.

    Verse four:
Then cheer ye Southern braves, ye soon shall see the day,
When Kentucky's fairest daughters will cheer you on your way,
And then her proud old mothers will welcome one and all
For United we must stand, but divided we must fall.

[Disclaimer: the racial terms and images in this song do not represent the attitude of sheet music singer. They are from the time when slavery was practiced in the United States. This recording is presented in original form as a part of musical history.]

    Lyrics:

    1. The sun shines bright in the old Kentucky home
’Tis summer, the darkies are gay
The corn top’s ripe and the meadow’s in the bloom
While the birds make music all the day
The young folks roll on the little cabin floor
All merry, all happy, and bright
By’n by Hard Times comes a knocking at the door
Then my old Kentucky Home, good night!

    Chorus:
    Weep no more, my lady
    Oh! weep no more today!
    We will sing one song
    For the old Kentucky Home
For the old Kentucky Home, far away

    2. They hunt no more for the possum and the coon
On the meadow, the hill and the shore
They sing no more by the glimmer of the moon
On the bench by the old cabin door
The day goes by like a shadow o’er the heart
With sorrow where all was delight
The time has come when the darkies have to part
Then my old Kentucky Home, good night!

    3. The head must bow and the back will have to bend
    Wherever the darkey may go
A few more days, and the trouble all will end
In the field where the sugar-canes grow
A few more days for to tote the weary load
No matter ’twill never be light
A few more days till we totter on the road
Then my old Kentucky Home, good night!

    ----------------------------------------------

words and music by Stephen C. Foster
published by Firth Pond & Co.

This song was inspired by a visit to extended family in Bardstown, Kentucky. They had slaves and slave children there. Minstrel songs like this, and the book Uncle Tom's Cabin, presented a slave's viewpoint. This put a human face on slavery which made the condition of slavery real for many who did not live in a slave state. It probably had the effect of increasing sympathy for the slave, leading to emancipation ten years later. It is the official song of the state of Kentucky.

sung by sheet music singer, Fred Feild

“The High Lonesome Sound,” produced by John Coen, is a 30-minute 16mm black & white film dating to 1963. Credits include John Coen (photography & sound), Joel Agee (assistant), Patricia Jaffe (editing).

The film focuses on Kentucky mountain singer Roscoe Holcomb and life in the coal mining town of Hazard, Kentucky. Old ballads and church songs are supplemented by popular hillbilly music and country rock and roll: sung by unemployed workers, coal miners, church congregations. - Film annotation from “American Folklore Films & Videotapes: An Index,” Center for Southern Folklore, Memphis, Tn. 1976.

The Kentucky mountaineers have preserved a proud heritage of traditional ballads and other old Scottish and English folk songs brought to America by their ancestors. Borrowing from this wonderful genre of folk songs, this outstanding setting of John Riley, The Lonesome Scenes of Winter, Sourwood Mountain, Frog Went-a-Courting, and Loving Hannah is destined to become a band classic. Skillfully scored and imaginative in setting, Songs of Old Kentucky provides a charming vehicle for expressive playing. A delightful addition to your next concert! (6:00) This title is available in SmartMusic.

'Flight of the Piasa' is a very effective piece of music that is superbly crafted by a composer who really does understand the limitations and playing capabilities of student musicians.
