  • Ray Charles - Georgia On My Mind

    5:55

    For more info -

Ray Charles was one of the true pioneers of soul music. Born in Georgia in 1930 he was one of the first performers to mix gospel, R & B and jazz to create a new form of black pop music that would come to be known as soul. His voice and delivery were strikingly different and instantly recognisable. He had his first hits in the early 50's and was still hitting the charts into the 21st century. His death in June 2004 from liver disease was front page news around the world.

This concert was filmed at the Montreux Jazz Festival on July 19, 1997 and features Ray Charles and his orchestra, led by sax player Al Jackson, and of course The Raelettes.

The full performance is available on the Eagle Vision DVD Live at Montreux 1997, out now.

    Lyrics:

Almost heaven, West Virginia, Blue Ridge Mountains, Shenandoah River.
Life is old there, older than the trees, younger than the mountains, blowing like a breeze.
Country roads, take me home to the place I belong.
West Virginia, mountain momma, take me home, country roads.

All my memories gather round her, miner's lady, stranger to blue water.
Dark and dusty, painted on the sky, misty taste of moonshine, teardrop in my eye.
Country roads, take me home to the place I belong.
West Virginia, mountain momma, take me home, country roads.

  • Georgia performed by The Airmen of Note

    4:07

The Airmen of Note is the premier jazz ensemble of the United States Air Force. Stationed at Joint Base Anacostia-Bolling in Washington, D.C., it is one of six musical ensembles that comprise The U.S. Air Force Band. Created in 1950 to continue the tradition of Major Glenn Miller's Army Air Forces dance band, the current band consists of 18 active duty Airmen musicians including one vocalist.

Chief Master Sgt. Kevin Burns performs Georgia in his home state of Tennessee. This arrangement comes straight from his idol, trumpet legend Doc Severinsen, who attended an earlier concert. Sgt. Burns' family heritage in the Army Air Forces brought his grandfather to the state of Georgia where he met his wife. With his mother in attendance this was truly a family dediation.

    Lyrics:
    [Verse 1]
Baby, lay on back and relax
Kick your pretty feet up on my dash
No need to go nowhere fast
Let’s enjoy right here, where we at

Who knows where this road is supposed to lead
    We got nothin’ but time
As long as you right here next time
    Everything’s gonna be alright

    [Chorus]
If it’s meant to be, it’ll be, it’ll be
    Baby just let it be
If it’s meant to be, it’ll be, it’ll be
    Baby just let it be

So won't you ride with me, ride with me
    See where this thing goes
If it’s meant to be, it’ll be, it’ll be
Baby if it’s meant to be

    [Verse 2]
I don’t need to be so uptight
But my heart’s been hurt a couple times
By a couple guys that didn’t treat me right
    I ain’t gonna lie, I ain’t gonna lie

‘Cause I’m tired of the fake love
Show me what you’re made of
    Boy, make me believe

    [Florida Georgia Line]
Whoa hold up, girl, don’t you know you’re beautiful
    And it’s easy to see

    [Chorus]
If it’s meant to be, it’ll be, it’ll be
    Baby just let it be
If it’s meant to be, it’ll be, it’ll be
    Baby just let it be

So won't you ride with me, ride with me
    See where this thing goes
If it’s meant to be, it’ll be, it’ll be
Baby if it’s meant to be

So come on ride with me, ride with me,
    See where this thing goes
So come on ride with me, ride with me,
Maybe if it’s meant to be

    [Bridge]
Maybe we do, maybe we don’t
Maybe we will, maybe we won’t

    [Chorus]
But if it’s meant to be, it’ll be, it’ll be
    Baby just let it be
If it’s meant to be, it’ll be, it’ll be
    Baby just let it be

So won't you ride with me, ride with me
    See where this thing goes
If it’s meant to be, it’ll be, it’ll be
Baby if it’s meant to be

If it’s meant to be, it’ll be, it’ll be
Baby if it’s meant to be
If it’s meant to be, it’ll be, it’ll be
Baby if it’s meant to be

  • Lost Dog street band, I went down to Georgia // GemsOnVHS™

    3:53

Lost Dog street band filmed on their property in Chapel Hill, TN. This song was written by their friend Nicholas Ridout, who sadly passed away. Some time ago, his wife Shannon and him used to live in our backyard in a van, with their dog. Those were some of the most memorable days of my life, listening to Ben and Nicholas laughing, fighting and playing music on long summer nights in Tennessee. Majority of proceeds from YouTube ads on this song go to Nicholas' widow, and his music lives on.

You can find Lost Dog street band on bandcamp, facebook and all that.

    Lyrics:

I grew up with reverence for the red white and blue
Spoke of God and liberty reciting the pledge of allegiance
Learned love of country from my own family
Some shivered and prayed approaching the beaches of Normandy
The flag waves high and that's how it should be
So many lives given and taken in the name of freedom
But the story is complicated and hard to read
Pages of the book obscured or torn out completely
I am a son of uncle Sam and I struggle to understand the good and evil
But I'm doing the best I can in a place built on stolen land with stolen people
Blood in the soil with the cotton and tobacco
Blood in the soil with the cotton and tobacco
Blood in the soil with the cotton and tobacco
A misnamed people and a kidnapped race
Laws may change but we can't erase the scares of the nation
    Of children devalued and disavowed
Displaced by greed and the arrogance of manifest destiny
Short-sighted to say it was a long time ago
Not even two life times have passed since the days of Lincoln
The sins of Andrew Jackson, the shame of Jim crow
And time moves slow when the tragedies are beyond description
I am a son of uncle Sam and I struggle to understand the good and evil
But I'm doing the best I can in a place built on stolen land with stolen people
We are more than the sum of our parts
All these broken homes and broken hearts
God will you keep us wherever we go
Will you forgive us for where we've been?
    We Americans
Blood on the table with the coffee and the sugar
Blood on the table with the coffee and the sugar
Blood on the table with the coffee and the sugar
I've been to every state and seen shore to shore the still open wounds of the Civil War
Washed blind hatred bounce back and forth seen vile prejudice both in the south and the north
And accountability is hard to impose of ghosts of ancestors haunting the halls of our conscious
But the path of grace and good will is still here
For those of us who may be considered among the living
I am a son of God and man and I may never understand the good and evil
But I dearly love this land because of this and in spite of We The People
We are more than the sum of our parts
All these broken bones and broken hearts
God will you keep us wherever we go
Can you forgive us for where we've been?
    We Americans
    We Americans
Love in our hearts with the pain and the memory
Love in our hearts with the pain and the memory
Love in our hearts with the pain and the memory
Love in our hearts with the pain and the memory
Love in our hearts with the pain and the memory
Love in our hearts with the pain and the memory
Love in our hearts with the pain and the memory
Love in our hearts with the pain and the memory
Love in our hearts with the pain and the memory
Love in our hearts with the pain and the memory
Love in our hearts with the pain and the memory

    Lyrics:
And there are people who think they're not receiving
    Anything from God at all
Oh, They are shaken from their believing
When they don't see results take quickly fall
But don't you waver and keep on living
In the way God want you to
Don't get discouraged and keep on giving
Soon it will come back to you
    Keep on casting
    Your bread upon the water
Soon it's gonna come back home on every way
    Keep on casting
    Your bread upon the water
Soon it's gonna come back home on every way
Good measure pressed down shaken together running over
Soon it's gonna come back home on every way
Oh, Keep on working seeking the kingdom
Instead of working for your needs
Just keep on sharing the love of Jesus
You know, growing comes from clemensies
    Keep on casting
    Your bread upon the water
Soon it's gonna come back home on every way
    Keep on casting
    Your bread upon the water
Soon it's gonna come back home on every way

    Lyrics:
Damn, I used to love this view
Sit here and drink a few
Main street and the high school lit up on Friday night
    Down there it’s another touchdown
Man, this year’s team is stout
I can hear them goin’ crazy
And up here so am I
Thinkin’ about you sittin’ there sayin’ I hate this, I hate it
If you couldn’t stand livin’ here why’d you take it, take it

    Give me back my hometown
    ‘Cause this is my hometown

All the colors of my youth
The red, the green, the hope, the truth
Are beatin’ me black and blue cause you’re in every scene
My friends try to cheer me up get together at the Pizza Hut
I didn’t have the heart to tell them that was our place
These sleepy streetlights on every sidewalk side street
Shed a light on everything that used to be

    Give me back my hometown
    ‘Cause this is my hometown

Georgia on My Mind is a song written in 1930 by Hoagy Carmichael (music) and Stuart Gorrell (lyrics). It is the official state song of the U.S. state of Georgia. Gorrell wrote the lyrics for Hoagy's sister, Georgia Carmichael. However, the lyrics of the song are ambiguous enough to refer either to the state or to a woman named Georgia. Carmichael's 1965 autobiography, Sometimes I Wonder, records the origin: a friend, saxophonist and bandleader Frankie Trumbauer, suggested: Why don't you write a song called 'Georgia?' Nobody lost much writing about the South. Thus, the song is universally believed to have been written about the state.

  • Marching Through Georgia

    3:12

[Disclaimer: this song contains derogatory racial terms. No hatred is intended. We present it in original form as part of musical history.]

    Lyrics:

    1. Bring the good old bugle, boys
    We’ll sing another song
Sing it with a spirit that will
    Start the world along
Sing it as we used to sing it
    Fifty thousand strong
While we were marching through Georgia

    Chorus:
“Hurrah! Hurrah! we bring the Jubilee!
Hurrah! Hurrah! the flag that makes you free!”
So we sang the chorus from Atlanta to the sea
While we were marching through Georgia

    2. How the darkeys shouted when
    They heard the joyful sound
    How the turkeys gobbled
    Which our commissary found
    How the sweet potatoes even
    Started from the ground
While we were marching through Georgia

    3. Yes, and there were Union men
    Who wept with joyful tears
When they saw the honor’d flag
They had not seen for years
    Hardly could they be restrained
    From breaking forth in cheers
While we were marching through Georgia

    4. “Sherman’s dashing Yankee boys
    Will never reach the coast!”
    So the saucy rebels said
    And ’twas a handsome boast
    Had they not forgot, alas
    To reckon with the host
While we were marching through Georgia

    5. So we made a thoroughfare
    For Freedom and her train
    Sixty miles in latitude
    Three hundred to the main
    Treason fled before us
    For resistance was in vain
While we were marching through Georgia

    ----------------------------------------------

words and music by Henry Clay Work
    published by Root & Cady

This marching song is a retrospective look at the end of the Civil War. It would not be liked in the south because Sherman's army destroyed the south as they went. This was to prevent a repeat by punishing the confederates. Of course, this gave rise to the saying, The south shall rise again! In honor of Major General Sherman's famous march from Atlanta to the Sea.

  • Talking with the Blues Vol. 16 - Peach State Blues - Georgia

    1:1:29

Talking with the Blues - An Anthology Of Contemporary Blues Songs From The USA - Peach State Blues - Georgia Vol. 1
A collection of contemporary blues songs from the state of Georgia, 1999.

The concept of TALKING WITH THE BLUES is based on a view of the various US states as blues regions. Even casual blues listeners are familiar with the fact that there is Chicago Blues or Mississippi Blues and the gripping social history of the music is very much marked by its geography. But there is much more that just those two places and to this day blues music stays committed to local styles. Moreover, many US states are endowed with a unique cultural identity grown out of the prevailing social, historical and ethnic realities. Reflections of these specific identities are also expressed in the blues.

Contemporary American blues practice is not limited to just a handful of states and comes in many shapes and colors. Blues is part of everyday culture and people from all walks of life choose it as their favorite soundtrack for social activities. Blues culture can be found in many places, especially in the network-like multitude of bars, live music clubs and juke joints. These blues strongholds are mostly dominated by local heroes who do not lag behind when compared with the big names of the business. Many of these contemporary and still to be discovered artists are the cornerstones of this anthology.

The notion of a recurring blues renaissance in the US is misleading and deceptive inasmuch as the blues has never disappeared. The infrastructure of the blues scene is not based upon the music industry's PR efforts but kept alive by the inherent qualities of the music and the profound dedication of blues lovers all over the country. Good blues does not have an expiration date. Blues is soulful, emotional, direct and intense. The best of contemporary blues is blessed with the special kind of truthfulness that can turn the affairs of everyday life into something special. These are features which seem to have more or less disappeared from the world of modern pop music.

Neglecting the theoretical baggage of blues scholarship TAXIM aims at presenting an entertaining and regionally relevant cross-section of fine contemporary US blues like it is blossoming on the fringes of the music industry. So get ready for exceptional talent from a multitude of blues regions. TALKING WITH THE BLUES is about the special qualities that can still turn this music into a way of life. Put together with expertise and thought, these compilations feature artists who disprove the prejudiced notion of blues as a music paralyzed by cliches. The blues is alive and well. Not only in Texas, Chicago or Mississippi but everywhere from Shreveport to Milwaukee, from San Diego to Jersey City. Welcome aboard.

He wrote that the song was composed when bandleader Frankie Trumbauer suggested that he write about the state of Georgia. According to Carmichael, Trumbauer also suggested the opening lyrics should be Georgia, Georgia ..., with the remaining lyrics coming from Gorrell. Carmichael made no mention of his sister. The song was recorded on September 15, 1930, in New York by Hoagy Carmichael and His Orchestra with Bix Beiderbecke on muted cornet, Carmichael on vocals, Eddie Lang on guitar and Charles Winters on bass. The recording was part of Beiderbecke's last recording session. The recording was released as Victor 23013 with One Night in Havana.

Frankie Trumbauer had the first major hit recording in 1931 when his recording made the top ten on the charts. Trumbauer had suggested that Carmichael compose the song. Another 1931 hit version was Mildred Bailey's vocal made with members of Paul Whiteman's Orchestra (Victor 22880).

On 30 July 1963, Lou Rawls recorded the song for his album Tobacco Road. Cold Chisel's version of the song appeared on the album Barking Spiders Live: 1983 and has become a staple of their live shows. Guitarist Ian Moss still performs the song and a live version is included in his Let's All Get Together album.

The song was a standard at performances by Ronnie Hawkins and The Hawks in the late 50s and early 60s, where it was sung by pianist Richard Manuel. When The Hawks split off on their own and became The Band, they kept the song as part of their repertoire. They recorded a studio version of the song for Jimmy Carter's presidential bid in 1976, which was released as a single that year as well as on their 1977 album Islands.[2]

American Idol contestant Matt Giraud performed this song during Hollywood Week Second Solo Performance. In 2006, saxophonist Gerald Albright covered the song off the album New Beginnings.[3][4]

In 2009, Hong Kong singer Khalil Fong covered the song in his album Timeless.

    Georgia on My Mind Lyrics

    Georgia, Georgia,
    The whole day through
    Just an old sweet song
    Keeps Georgia on my mind

    I'm say Georgia
    Georgia
    A song of you
    Comes as sweet and clear
    As moonlight through the pines

Other arms reach out to me
    Other eyes smile tenderly
Still in peaceful dreams I see
The road leads back to you

    I said Georgia,
Ooh Georgia, no peace I find
    Just an old sweet song
    Keeps Georgia on my mind

Other arms reach out to me
    Other eyes smile tenderly
Still in peaceful dreams I see
The road leads back to you

    Georgia,
    Georgia,
No peace, no peace I find
    Just this old, sweet song
    Keeps Georgia on my mind

I said just an old sweet song,
    Keeps Georgia on my mind

  • Ray Charles - Georgia On My Mind

Georgia on My Mind is a 1930 song written by Hoagy Carmichael and Stuart Gorrell and first recorded that year. It has often been associated with Ray Charles, a native of the U.S. state of Georgia who recorded it for his 1960 album The Genius Hits the Road. In 1979, the State of Georgia designated it the official state song.

Ray Charles' 1960 recording on The Genius Hits the Road was a major hit, reaching the number one spot for one week in November 1960 on the US Billboard Hot 100. Though Georgia On My Mind was a hit single before Charles' recording, the song has now become strongly identified with Charles in the public consciousness. On March 7, 1979, in a symbol of reconciliation in the aftermath of years of activism and national legislation resulting from the Civil Rights Movement, Charles performed the song before the Georgia General Assembly. After this performance, the Assembly adopted it as the state song on April 24.

In 2003, Rolling Stone magazine named Ray Charles' version of Georgia on My Mind the 44th greatest song of all time.

This song -- written in 1930 by Hoagy Carmichael (music) and Stuart Gorrell (lyrics) -- was first recorded by Hoagy Carmichael and His Orchestra with Bix Beiderbecke on muted cornet and Hoagy Carmichael on vocals. Meant was a woman: Carmichael's sister called Georgia.
In Ray Charles's most famous interpretation from 1960 the state of Georgia was meant, Charles' home state, where he was banned somehow, but in 1979 it became the official state song of the U.S. state of Georgia.

This is my cover version, recorded at Musicol Studios in Columbus Ohio. The band consists of Bobby Floyd on Fender Rhodes, Lester Bass on upright bass and Joe Ong on the drums. On a very cold January winter's day the 5 of us, my wife Rita included, recorded 30 jazz standards in around 4 hours. That marathon session produced one the most fun arrangements of this song and has been a staple in my live performances since 1980. It meant even more to me when we moved to the Atlanta area in 1991, where I performed all over the metro area entertaining for country clubs and wedding receptions. I hope you'll enjoy this bluesy and soulful version of Ray Charles' classic hit: Georgia On My Mind. THIS version you're listening to now was trumpet recorded on April 18th, 2020.
