Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756–1791) was a prolific and influential composer of the Classical era. Born in Salzburg, he showed prodigious ability from his earliest childhood. Already competent on keyboard and violin, he composed from the age of five and performed before European royalty. At 17, Mozart was engaged as a musician at the Salzburg court, but grew restless and traveled in search of a better position. While visiting Vienna in 1781, he was dismissed from his Salzburg position. He chose to stay in the capital, where he achieved fame but little financial security. During his final years in Vienna, he composed many of his best-known symphonies, concertos, operas, and portions of the Requiem, which was largely unfinished at the time of his death. He wrote more than 600 works, many acknowledged as pinnacles of symphonic, concertante, chamber, operatic, and choral music. He is among the most enduringly popular of classical composers, and his influence is profound on subsequent Western art music. Ludwig van Beethoven composed his own early works in the shadow of Mozart, and Joseph Haydn wrote: Posterity will not see such a talent again in 100 years.

  • “Ach, ich fühl’s” from Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte

    4:15

For the past 38 years, the Richard Tucker Award has been granted to an American singer poised on the edge of a major national and international career, with a list of winners that reads like a who's who of American opera stars.

This year's winner, soprano Tamara Wilson, was hailed by The New York Times upon her Metropolitan Opera debut as a young American who sings Verdi with a passion that surpasses stereotype. Her wide repertoire encompasses Verdi, Mozart, Strauss and Wagner roles and Ms. Wilson will make debuts this season at Munich's Bayerische Staatsoper and the Deutsche Oper Berlin and return to Barcelona's Liceu, all in leading Verdi roles, as well as singing Britten, Wagner, Mahler and Strauss in concerts with leading orchestras.

At this celebration at The Greene Space at WQXR, Miss Wilson will be joined by recent Tucker Foundation grant recipients soprano Erin Morley, mezzo-soprano Samantha Hankey and tenor Andrew Stenson. They will perform works of Mozart, featuring arias and duets from some of his most beloved operas, including Don Giovanni, Le Nozze di Figaro, and The Magic Flute. Pianist Brian Zeger, artistic director of Juilliard's Marcus Institute, accompanies. WQXR's Nimet Habachy hosts.

  • Claudio Abbado / L-M. Navarro: W.A Mozart - Oboe Concerto / II. Adagio non troppo

    7:15

    Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-1791)
    Oboe Concerto in C Major, K.314 (1777)
    II. Adagio non troppo

    Orchestra Mozart
    Claudio Abbado, Conductor

    Lucas Macías Navarro, Oboe
    Gregory Ahss, Violin
    Konstantin Pfiz, Cello
    Guilhaume Santana, Bassoon

It all started at the end of a beautiful summer’s day in August 2010: the telephone rings, Lucas Macias Navarro, solo oboe of the Concertgebow Amsterdam, is on the line: “Hi Pat! Would you be interested in recording Mozart’s Oboe Concerto with the Mozart Orchestra, conducted by… Claudio Abbado?”

Knowing the musician to be a tease at times, I first thought it was a joke, but Lucas confirms: it is indeed a serious proposition!

Even though the Claves catalogue includes such brilliant names as Fischer-Dieskau, Teresa Berganza or the English Chamber Orchestra, it is true that a project such as this is quite something in a catalogue that prides itself with rare recordings, young interpreters, and also promotes and broadcasts the Swiss musical scene.

After all, it is rather as if, in 1980, the flautist Jean-Pierre Rampal had made a proposal to our founder, Marguerithe Dütschler, to record a Mozart concerto conducted by Herbert von Karajan…
Needless to say, the answer was yes, and thanks to donations from a very generous patron, the recording was planned in Spain, three years later.

    5:44

After the success of the first forty-two reissues, which restored to the limelight some of the gems of the early music repertory in the catalogues of our labels, here are fourteen new titles to allow listeners to renew acquaintance with further treasures of the Renaissance, Baroque and classical, performed by some of the leading interpreters of the genre; most of these discs won one or more awards on their first release. As with the first series, the booklets include notes in French, English and German. The photographers – among the main contemporary ones – illustrate the covers of the series with their work; this time the common design element is the colour pink.

  • Ursula Holliger & Peter-Lukas Graf - A. Mozart: Double Concerto for Flute, Harp and Orchestra K.299

    Amadeus Mozart (1756-1791)
Double Concerto for Flute, Harp and Orchestra K.299
    Andantino

When Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, accompanied by his mother, arrived in Paris in 1778, he was very optimistic about winning recognition and perhaps even a post which would free him from his duties which he so loathed at the archbishop's court in Salzburg. Contact with influential personages was therefore very important. One of his most important contacts was with the Duke of Guines, a music-loving diplomat and amateur flutist. Mozart enthusiastically reported to his father in a letter dated 14 May that the Duke of Guines plays the flute splendidly, and his daughter, who is studying composition with me, is an excellent harpist. The duke stood in favor with Queen Marie—Antoinette, who was expecting a child at the time. Mozart had thus hoped to receive a commission for the celebration of the royal birth. In order to gain the duke's goodwill, Mozart wrote the Double Concerto for Flute and Harp K. 299. To his great disappointment, however, not only did Mozart not receive a commission, but the duke was also content merely to offer a paltry sum for the concerto, an offer which Mozart indignantly refused.

Although Mozart was fond neither of the flute nor the harp (he once even said in a letter that he couldn't stand the flute), he did succeed in creating a delightfully charming work abounding in beautiful melodies. This concerto also provides flutists and harpists, of whom Mozart [read more:
