  • BTS: Korea to Wembley

    13:59

How did Korean pop band BTS come to headline one of the world's most iconic stadiums? Prepping to play a sold out Wembley the band, and fans, reflect on their path to pop-stardom.

BTS are the first Korean act to reach number 1 on the billboard charts in the US and the first group since the Beatles to earn three number 1 albums in less than a year. Time magazine put them on their most influential list and they have performed on some of the biggest TV shows in the world from Graham Norton to Jimmy Fallon. They've even spoken out about mental health at the United Nations.

When BBC Radio 1's Adele Roberts first met the seven member K-Pop boyband BTS, they had never been to the UK. Now, two years later, she meets them again as they are about to become the first Korean pop group to headline Wembley Stadium, selling out two nights and playing to over 60,000 people.

Their success has been observed by tens of millions of people, not least Adele Roberts who was first to play a BTS track on Radio 1. In this programme, Adele takes a look at how the band's journey began and how they have come so far in such a short space of time. She speaks to the choreographer behind the famous dance moves, finds out about the role that fashion plays, and speaks to the devoted fans. BTS' fanbase call themselves the ARMY and are a powerful force to be reckoned with, helping the band's latest single 'Boy with Luv', featruing Halsey to become the first track by a K-Pop band to make it into the UK Top 20.

Adele asks what's next for this K-Pop sensation as we see them play Wembley Stadium for the very first time.

    Verse 1
This is my worship, this is my offering
In every moment, I withhold nothing
I’m learning to trust You, even when I can’t see it
Even in suffering, I have to believe it

    Chorus
If You say it’s wrong, then I’ll say no
If You say release, I’m letting go
If You’re in it with me, I’ll begin
And when You say to jump, I’m diving in
If You say be still, then I will wait
If You say to trust, I will obey
I don’t wanna follow my own way I’m done chasing feelings Spirit lead me

    Verse 2
It felt like a burden, but once I could grasp it
You took me further, further then I was asking
Simply to see You, it’s worth it all
My life is an altar, let Your fire fall

    Chorus
If You say it’s wrong, then I’ll say no
If You say release, I’m letting go
If You’re in it with me, I’ll begin
And when You say to jump, I’m diving in
If You say be still, then I will wait
If You say to trust, I will obey
Teach me how to follow in Your way
I’m done chasing feelings Spirit lead me

    Bridge
When all hope is gone and Your Word is all I got
I have to believe You still bring water from the rocks
To satisfy my thirst, to love me at my worst
And even when I don’t remember
You remind me of my worth
I don’t trust my ways, I’m trading in my thoughts
I’d lay down everything, cause’ You’re all that I want
I’ve landed on my knees, this is the cup You have for me
And even when it don’t make sense
I’m gonna let Your Spirit lead

Spirit lead me, Spirit lead me Spirit lead me, Spirit lead me

    Chorus
If You say it’s wrong, then I’ll say no
If You say release, I’m letting go
If You’re in it with me, I’ll begin
And when You say to jump, I’m diving in
If You say be still, then I will wait
If You say to trust, I will obey
You’re the only Truth, The Life, The Way
I’m done chasing feelings Spirit lead me (repeat)

    LYRICS:
    [Verse 1]
    I know you're somewhere
    Out there
    Somewhere far away
    I want you back
    I want you back
    My neighbors think I'm crazy
    But they don't understand
    You're all I had
    You're all I had

    [Pre-chorus]
    At night when the stars
    Light up my room
    I sit by myself

    [Chorus]
    Talking to the moon
    Try’na get to you
    In hopes you're on the
    Other side
    Talking to me too
    Or am I a fool
    Who sits alone
    Talking to the moon

    [Verse 2]
    I'm feelin’ like I'm famous
    The talk of the town
    They say I've gone mad
    Yeah I've gone mad
    But they don't know
    What I know
    Cuz when the sun
    Goes down
    Someone’s talkin’ back
    Yeah they're talkin’ back

    [Pre-chorus]
    At night when the stars
    Light up my room
    I sit by myself

    [Chorus]
    Talking to the moon
    Try’na get to you
    In hopes you're on the
    Other side
    Talking to me too
    Or am I a fool
    Who sits alone
    Talking to the moon

    [Bridge]
Do you ever hear me callin’
    Cuz every night I'm talkin’
    To the moon...

    [Chorus]
    Still try’na get to you
    In hopes you're on the
    Other side
    Talking to me too
    Or am I a fool
    Who sits alone
    Talking to the moon

    [Outro]
    I know you're somewhere
    Out there
    Somewhere far away

  • Albums That Changed Music: Radiohead - The Bends

    48:04

➡️➡️Learn more about Radiohead's 'The Bends' here:
➡️➡️Watch our other Songs, Artists, and Albums that Changed Music here:
    ➡️➡️John Leckie Interview:

In its pursuit of intelligent, imaginative, inspired music, Radiohead won six Grammy Awards, sold 30 million albums, and was inducted in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2019. Today, Radiohead continues to be admired as one of the few bands that continues to innovate and renew itself. It almost single-handedly has kept rock relevant in the 21st century, when the genre has largely gone out of fashion.

Radiohead’s stellar reputation is to a large degree based on the band’s most famous albums, their third, OK Computer (1997) and their fourth, Kid A (2000), both of which won a Grammy Award for Best Alternative Album. It is less well-known in the US that it was in fact the band’s second album, The Bends, released in 1995, that launched Radiohead’s experimental side and established their ambitious new musical direction.

The Bends was Radiohead’s Big Leap Forwards into unknown musical territory, and also distinguished them from the Britpop movement. The song writing is incredibly strong throughout and is enhanced by striking arrangements, extraordinary sonic landscapes, and a majestic production, courtesy of producer John Leckie. The Bends is Ground Zero for what has been called “the Radiohead aesthetic.”

The Bends was released on March 13, 1995 in the UK, on Parlophone Records, and on April 4 in the US, on Capital Records. Featuring artwork by Stanley Donwood, it was immediately successful in their homeland, spending 160 weeks in the UK album charts and reaching to number 4, but it was much less recognized in the US.

The reviews in the UK also were overwhelmingly positive, with The Guardian writing that Radiohead had “transformed themselves from nondescript guitar-beaters to potential arena-fillers.” Q magazine called the album a “powerful, bruised, majestically desperate record of frighteningly good songs.” And the New Musical Express praised it as “a classic” and “the consummate, all-encompassing, continent-straddling ’90s rock record.”

The Bends put Radiohead on course to become the biggest and most influential rock act in the world. The band itself recognized the album as a “turning point” in their career, and were aware that it had an immediate impact on their contemporaries.

The legacy of The Bends continues to shine. In 2006, it was included in a list of “50 albums that changed music,” that was published in the prestigious British newspaper The Observer. Today, twenty-six years after its release, many regard it as Radiohead’s magnum opus.

A review in Allmusic concludes, “What makes The Bends so remarkable is that it marries such ambitious, and often challenging, instrumental soundscapes to songs that are at their cores hauntingly melodic and accessible. With The Bends, Radiohead have reinvented anthemic rock.”

    Most Girls Lyrics
Some girls, feel best in their tiny dresses
Some girls, nothin' but sweatpants, looking like a princess
Some girls, kiss new lips every single night
They're stayin' out late cause they just celebrating life

You know some days you feel so good in your own skin
But it's okay if you wanna change the body that you came in
'Cause you look greatest when you feel like a damn queen
We're all just playing a game in a way, trying to win at life

Most girls are smart and strong and beautiful
Most girls, work hard, go far, we are unstoppable
Most girls, our fight to make every day, no two are the same
I wanna be like, I wanna be like, most girls
I wanna be like, I wanna be like, most girls
I wanna be like, I wanna be like

They're stayin' out late cause they just celebratin'
I wanna be like, I wanna be like
They're stayin' out late cause they just celebratin'
I wanna be like, I wanna be like

Some girls, like to keep their physique real private
Some girls, wear jeans so tight, 'cause it feels so right, yeah
Some girls, every day searching, keep the page turning
Sleepin' in late cause they just celebrating life

You know some days you feel so good in your own skin
But it's okay if you wanna change the body that you came in

  • A. R. Rahman, Jiya Jale

    6:57

#berklee #berkleecollegeofmusic Jiya Jale (Dil Se) is a tribute to A. R. Rahman by the Berklee Indian Ensemble in gratitude for his immense contribution to our lives through his inspiring music and journey.

    A. R. Rahman is an Indian composer, singer-songwriter, producer, multi-instrumentalist and philanthropist. In 2009, Time Magazine placed Rahman in its list of World's Most Influential People. In a notable career spanning two decades, he has garnered particular acclaim for redefining contemporary Indian film music, and putting Indian music on the global map, in a way that no other Indian composer/performer has achieved.

On October 24, 2014, Berklee College of Music will confer A. R. Rahman with an honorary doctor of music degree. Berklee Faculty and students from the Berklee Indian Ensemble will pay tribute to the living legend, who will join them on select pieces in a concert celebrating his music and life at Boston's Symphony Hall.

Mr. Rahman's visit is a signature event under Berklee India Exchange, a new initiative co-founded by two Indian Berklee alums, Annette Philip (artistic director), and Clint Valladares (artist relations and strategy), as a platform for cultural conversation, through the composition, collaboration, and performance of original Indian music. Proceeds from the concert will go towards a scholarship fund in Mr. Rahman's name for students from India to attend Berklee.

This is a huge milestone for the Berklee Indian Ensemble, one of largest and most diverse ensembles at the college, with members representing 37 countries, and counting. Founded in 2011 by faculty member, Annette Philip, the ensemble performs an expansive repertoire of Indian classical, semi-classical, folk, Sufi, and contemporary Indo-jazz music, with the ultimate goal of presenting concerts entirely consisting of original student compositions. Every year, there is at least one composition by A. R. Rahman featured in their repertoire.

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756–1791) was a prolific and influential composer of the Classical era. Born in Salzburg, he showed prodigious ability from his earliest childhood. Already competent on keyboard and violin, he composed from the age of five and performed before European royalty. At 17, Mozart was engaged as a musician at the Salzburg court, but grew restless and traveled in search of a better position. While visiting Vienna in 1781, he was dismissed from his Salzburg position. He chose to stay in the capital, where he achieved fame but little financial security. During his final years in Vienna, he composed many of his best-known symphonies, concertos, operas, and portions of the Requiem, which was largely unfinished at the time of his death. He wrote more than 600 works, many acknowledged as pinnacles of symphonic, concertante, chamber, operatic, and choral music. He is among the most enduringly popular of classical composers, and his influence is profound on subsequent Western art music. Ludwig van Beethoven composed his own early works in the shadow of Mozart, and Joseph Haydn wrote: Posterity will not see such a talent again in 100 years.

  • Mozart - Violin Sonata No. 22, A Major K. 305 Szeryng/Haebler

    14:32

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (27 January 1756 – 5 December 1791) was one of the most influential, popular and prolific composers of the classical period. A child prodigy, from an early age he began composing over 600 works, including some of the most famous pieces of symphonic, chamber, operatic, and choral music.

    Please support my channel:

    Sonata for violin & piano No. 22 in A major, K. 305 (K. 293d)

    1. Allegro di molto (0:00)
    2. Tema con variazioni. Andante grazioso (4:51)

Henryk Szeryng, violin and Ingrid Haebler, piano

The A Major Sonata is the penultimate of the group of six sonatas for piano and violin composed by Mozart in 1778. All were written during the long journey to Mannheim and Paris undertaken by Mozart and his mother Maria Anna during 1777 and 1778. The present work dates from after the couple's arrival in Paris in the spring of 1778, being dated from some time during the summer of that year. The stay in Paris was neither successful nor happy. Mozart failed to gain the employment his father Leopold hoped for, and on July 3, father and son suffered a disastrous blow with the death of Maria Anna at the age of 57. Whether or not the A major Sonata predates this sad event is not known, but the music, unlike the E minor Sonata (its immediate predecessor) certainly shows no sign of emotional upheaval. Indeed, Mozart's biographer Alfred Einstein describes the work as a social duet, ideally untroubled, and full of cheerfulness, freshness and innocence, an opinion that would be difficult to contradict.

Like all the earlier sonatas in the group it consists of only two movements, an Allegro di molto followed by a theme and variations marked Andante grazioso. In common with all the sonatas of this period for this combination, Mozart seeks to redress the traditional hegemony of the piano (note that these are sonatas for piano and violin) by giving the violin greater equality. Both movements open with the principal theme stated in unison by both instruments (as had the opening Allegro of the E minor sonata), while the use of variation form in the second movement allows the violin a moment of lyrical glory in Variation 4. The six sonatas K. 301 through to K. 306 were published in Paris later in 1778 as opus 1, No's 1-6 with the title page bearing a dedication to the Maria Elisabeth, Electress of the Palatinate. For this reason they are frequently known as Palatine Sonatas.

  • The 10 Most Influential Tracks

    11:52

So my idea is, if everyone submits their most influential tracks we can compile the DEFINITIVE list (for us), which people can then go and study and learn from? Here's mine, with my recommended recordings. I won't link them to Youtube 'cos I'll get spanked, I won't link them to Amazon 'cos I'll get spanked, and Spotify? I won't even go there... I still think CD / Vinyl is the best way to consume, getting up, finding the track, opening the case and putting it in the tray hitting close and pressing play is the very least commitment we should offer to absorbing brilliance.

*There's also an obscene version of this with a trombone somewhere.

**If you become as obsessed with this piece as I am the version conducted by Berio himself is good as it features the vocal group he wrote it for, it is also interesting because this recording was made before he added the 5th movement. The version conducted by Boulez is really good too, I hate his work as a composer but there's no denying his conducting chops. The version recorded in Amsterdam is the bollocks for me though. These guys are tighter than the Tower Of Power.

  • Mozart - Variations on a Minuet by Duport, K.573 Ingrid Haebler

    13:56

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (27 January 1756 – 5 December 1791) was one of the most influential, popular and prolific composers of the classical period. A child prodigy, from an early age he began composing over 600 works, including some of the most famous pieces of symphonic, chamber, operatic, and choral music.

Variations (9) on a minuet by Duport for piano in D major, K. 573. Potsdam, 29 April, 1789

    Ingrid Haebler, piano

    Description by Robert Cummings [-]
Pierre Duport's cello sonata, Op. 4/6, was quite popular in the late eighteenth century -- at least it was with Friedrich Wilhelm II, the King of Prussia, for whom Mozart may have written this set of variations on one of its themes. The theme, taken from the minuet of Duport's sonata, is unimpressive on its own, but Mozart manages to wring a charming set of variations from it.

The first two variations maintain the theme's lively mood, the second exhibiting much scale-like writing, the melody heard in cascades of running notes. The theme appears in muscular but playful chords in the next variation and with lively accompaniment. With the fourth variation, the mood relaxes just a bit, but the pacing remains fast, the manner playful -- and playful describes the mischievous fifth variant, as well. The sixth is dreamy in its slower tempo and mostly upper register writing. Things turn lively and playful again in the ensuing variant, but slower once more and also reflective in the eighth. The last variation is driven and full of brilliant colors and dazzling writing. This charming masterwork closes with a brief restatement of the minuet theme.

    Sonata for violin & piano No. 19 in E flat major, K. 302 (K. 293b) 1778

    1. Allegro (0:00)
    2. Rondeau. Andante grazioso (5:45)

Henryk Szeryng, violin and Ingrid Haebler, piano

    Description by Brian Robins [-]
The second of a group of six sonatas for keyboard and violin (K. 301 - K. 306) published in Paris in 1778, the G Major Sonata was composed in Mannheim in the spring of 1778. All six were written during the course of the long journey to Mannheim and Paris undertaken by Mozart (in the company of his mother Maria Anna) during 1777 and 1778. They appear to have gained their impetus from a set of sonatas by the Dresden Kapellmeister Joseph Schuster (1748-1812), which Mozart heard and played in Munich, the first stop made on the tour. In a letter to his father Leopold (the relevant passage is quoted in full in the entry for K. 301), Mozart explains that he will compose some sonatas in a similar style if he has time before leaving Munich. In fact he and his mother left the Bavarian city shortly afterwards, but it was presumably the model of Schuster's sonatas he had in mind when he returned to the idea in Mannheim. The novelty of Schuster's works lay not only in their exploration of a combination of German, French and Italian traits (he had studied in Italy), but also in the greater degree of equality between the two instruments than was usual in a genre in which the dominance of the keyboard part was taken for granted, a dominance still implied by the order in which the instruments were listed in all such works.

Like all but the final sonata, K. 302 is in only two movements, the preferred form of composers like J. C. Bach. Here an Allegro is followed by a Rondeau marked Andante grazioso, a movement in which Mozart highlights the increasing tendency to attain equality between the instruments by alternating the theme between the piano alone and the violin. The six sonatas K. 301-K. 306 were published as Opus 1, No's 1-6, a confusing designation since the rubric Op. 1 had already been used for the childhood set of sonatas also published in Paris in 1764. The title page bears a dedication to Maria Elisabeth, Electress of the Palatinate, the origination of the frequently used designation Palatine Sonatas.

  • Mozart - 6 German Dances K. 600

    12:03

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (27 January 1756 – 5 December 1791), baptised as Johannes Chrysostomus Wolfgangus Theophilus Mozart, was a prolific and influential composer of the classical era. According to Bartje Bartmans the greatest and brightest star on the firmament.

    6 Deutsche Tänze (1791)

    1. German Dance in C major
    2. German Dance in F major (1:59)
    3. German Dance in B flat major (4:01)
    4. German Dance in E flat major (6:03)
    5. German Dance in G major (The Canary) (7:54)
    6. German Dance in D major (9:43)

London Mozart Players conducted by Matthias Bamert

    Description by John Palmer [-]
It seems Mozart, and his contemporaries as well, used the term, Deutsche (German Dance), as a generic expression. Often it meant the same thing as Allemande, but eventually came to be replaced by the titles of the two genres it usually signified: the Ländler and the waltz. Examples from the 1780s are generally in triple meter with two repeated phrases of eight measures in length, usually with a da capo. Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, and Schubert composed numerous German Dances for various ensembles for use at court balls. Nearly all of them are in major keys.

Mozart's ten sets of German Dances are among his many occasional pieces. Nearly all of them were intended for court functions in Vienna, generally for the balls held in the famous Redoutensaal of the Vienna Hofburg. Mozart's first set of German Dances dates from February, 1787. After his appointment to Court Kammermusiker (court Chamber Music Composer) in December 1787, Mozart's output of dance music would increase. There are two sets of German Dances from 1788, two from 1789, and three from the first two months of 1791.

The six German Dances of K. 600, are scored for piccolo and contrabass with two each of flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, horn, trumpet, violin, and timpani. Mozart entered the pieces on his List of All my Works on January 29, 1791.

  • Mozart - The 2 Piano Quartets K. 478 & 493

    1:1:20

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (27 January 1756 – 5 December 1791) was one of the most influential, popular and prolific composers of the classical period. A child prodigy, from an early age he began composing over 600 works, including some of the most famous pieces of symphonic, chamber, operatic, and choral music.

    Piano Quartet No. 1, in G minor, K. 478 (Oct. 16, 1785)

    I. Allegro (0:00)
    II. Andante (14:33)
    III. Rondo (Allegro moderato) (21:23)

    Piano Quartet in E-flat major, K. 493 (1786) (29:17)

    I. Allegro (29:17)
    II. Larghetto (43:32)
    III. Allegretto (52:47)

    Beaux Arts Trio

    Menahem Pressler, piano
    Isidore Cohen, violin
    Bernard Greenhouse, violoncello
    and guest: Bruno Giuranna, viola

Piano Quartet No. 1 in G minor, K. 478, is considered the first major piece composed for piano quartet in the chamber music repertoire. The piece is scored for violin, viola, cello, and piano.

Mozart received a commission for three quartets in 1785 from the publisher Franz Anton Hoffmeister. Hoffmeister thought this quartet was too difficult and that the public would not buy it, so he released Mozart from the obligation of completing the set.

Hofmeister's fear that the work was too difficult for amateurs was borne out by an article in the Journal des Luxus und der Moden published in Weimar in June 1788. The article highly praised Mozart and his work, but expressed dismay over attempts by amateurs to perform it:

[as performed by amateurs] it could not please: everybody yawned with boredom over the incomprehensible tintamarre of 4 instruments which did not keep together for four bars on end, and whose senseless concentus never allowed any unity of feeling; but it had to please, it had to be praised! ... what a difference when this much-advertised work of art is performed with the highest degree of accuracy by four skilled musicians who have studied it carefully.
The assessment accords with a view widely held of Mozart in his own lifetime, that of a greatly talented composer who wrote very difficult music.

At the time the piece was written, the harpsichord was still widely used. Although the piece was originally published with the title Quatuor pour le Clavecin ou Forte Piano, Violon, Tallie [sic] et Basse, stylistic evidence suggests Mozart intended the piano part for the 'Viennese' fortepiano of the period and that, according to Basil Smallman, our modern piano is a perfectly acceptable alternative.

Piano Quartet No. 2 in E-flat major, K. 493, was written nine months after Franz Anton Hoffmeister released Mozart from the obligation of writing three piano quartets, completing it on June 3, 1786

BTS has teamed up with McDonald's as part of its year-long Famous Orders campaign to reveal what they have in the sack when they visit the burger chain. BTS will follow on the heels of the Travis Scott promo that caused a temporary shortage of Quarter Pounders when it launched in September and a J Balvin Vibras-themed deal in October, and will likely cause a run on chicken McNuggets, since that's what the septet have tapped as their go-to menu item. The group's order (in the U.S.) includes a 10-piece McNugget meal, medium fries, and a medium drink with sweet chili and Cajun dipping sources inspired by the McD's in the K-pop icons' native South Korea, which will be available in the U.S. for the first time ever.

  • Albums That Changed Music: Joni Mitchell - Blue

    33:43

➡️➡️Learn more about Joni Mitchell's 'Blue' here:
➡️➡️Watch our other Songs, Artists, and Albums That Changed Music videos here:

In 1971, Joni Mitchell released one of the most influential and powerfully introspective albums of all time, Blue. In a tumultuous period of her young life, learning to balance fame alongside changing personal relationships, Mitchell held nothing back. She shared an incredible vulnerability that not only tapped into the spirit of her own generation at the start of the seventies, but that also inspired generations of aspiring songwriters and musicians to follow.

Mitchell began her music career as a folk singer, but by 1968, she had written a hit single, “Both Sides Now” for Judy Collins. The song appeared on Mitchell’s 1969 album Clouds which showcased her songwriting talent and won her a Grammy for best Folk Performance. Mitchell’s early work reveals her ability to synthesize the changing landscape of the world around her into musical form with songs like “Big Yellow Taxi” and “Woodstock.” Although she never actually attended the famed festival, her song became a hit for the band Crosby Stills Nash and Young in 1970 on their landmark album Deja Vu. Around this same time, she released her second album, Ladies of the Canyon which housed both “Big Yellow Taxi” and “Woodstock. The album was an instant success in both radio play and sales.

Blue was released on June 22, 1971 by Reprise Records. The album hit number 15 in the US on the Billboard 200 chart, number 9 in her native Canada on the Canadian RPM Albums Chart and Number 3 on the UK Albums Chart. The album’s single, “Carey” barely hit the Billboard Hot 100 – peaking at number 93. It’s a strong initial performance – no doubt – and reviews were equally positive….but its legacy has far outshined the album’s initial commercial success.

50 years later, it is largely viewed – by audiences, critics and especially other musicians – as one of the greatest albums of all time. In 2020, Rolling Stone rated it number 3 on their list of the “500 Greatest Albums of All Time.” In 2000 The New York Times named it one of 25 albums that represented “turning points and pinnacles in 20th century popular music.”

David Crosby recently reflected: “For me, Blue is the best singer-songwriter album. Picking a song from it is like choosing between your children. Can you imagine a better song than A Case of You? She was so brilliant as a songwriter, it crushed me. But she gives us all something to strive for.” It would be impossible to overstate the influence this album has had on generations of aspiring songwriters and musicians, alongside the influence it had on her own circle of musician friends at the turn of the seventies. In the midst of an impressive collection of phenomenal songwriters and musicians, Joni Mitchell bared her soul and brilliance with an unmatched level of honesty and abandon.

“Do Or Die,” the dark continuation to “Bomb,” is a groovy dance track combining Brazilian funk, electro and EDM. Set to a choreography that stands out for being one of the most difficult in K-Pop, “Do or Die” is a fight song that speaks with an all-or-nothing attitude.

  • Mozart - Symphony No. 39 in E flat major, K. 543 Schmidt-Isserstedt

    29:45

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (27 January 1756 – 5 December 1791) was one of the most influential, popular and prolific composers of the classical period. A child prodigy, from an early age he began composing over 600 works, including some of the most famous pieces of symphonic, chamber, operatic, and choral music.

    Symphony No. 39 in E flat major, K. 543 (1788)

    1. Adagio - Allegro (0:00)
    2. Andante con moto (11:16)
    3. Menuetto & Trio. Allegretto (20:00)
    4. Finale. Allegro (24:05)

London Symphony Orchestra conducted by Hans Schmidt-Isserstedt

    Recording: Fontana Grandioso LP

    Description by Brian Robins
In the three symphonies of 1788 (to which must be added in this regard the Prague Symphony of 1786) we find the culmination of Mozart's assimilation of the contrapuntal style of Bach and Handel he had first begun to study during the early 1780s. It was this synthesis of learned style with the clean clarity of classicism that caused so much trouble for Mozart's contemporaries, to whom his late style became increasingly difficult. Each of the symphonies occupies a very specific world of its own. The E flat Symphony, entered by Mozart into his thematic catalog on June 26, 1786, is often characterized as being warm and autumnal (Robbins Landon), a description that (as so often with Mozart) tells only part of the story; it fails to bring to attention the symphony's tensile strength and a dramatic quality that does not preclude moments of pathos more readily associated with the G minor symphony. There are four movements. The opening Allegro is prefaced (as it had been in both the Prague and Linz symphonies, its immediate numerical predecessors) by a powerful slow Adagio introduction. The following Andante has a secondary theme which is much stormier (and also subjected to considerable development) than might be expected in a slow movement, while the succeeding Minuet has an elegant gait set off by a rustic central trio. The final Allegro is a dazzling display of good humor and contrapuntal wizardry, its complexity skillfully masked in one of those movements in which the composer conceals his art. The symphony is scored for flute, pairs of clarinets, bassoons, horns, trumpets, timpani, and strings.

  • Mozart - Violin Sonata No. 28, E Flat Major, K. 380 Szeryng/Haebler

    18:51

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (27 January 1756 – 5 December 1791) was one of the most influential, popular and prolific composers of the classical period. A child prodigy, from an early age he began composing over 600 works, including some of the most famous pieces of symphonic, chamber, operatic, and choral music.

    Sonata for violin & piano No. 28 in E flat major, K. 380 (K. 374f) (1781)

    1. Allegro (0:00)
    2. Andante con moto (6:51)
    3. Rondeau. Allegro (14:25)

Henryk Szeryng, violin and Ingrid Haebler, piano

The Sonata in E flat is the last of a group of four, possibly five sonatas for piano and violin composed by Mozart during 1781, the year in which he commenced a new life as a freelance musician in Vienna. By the end of the year, all five, along with the earlier Sonata in C, K. 296, were published by the Viennese house of Artaria, the start of a long association with Artaria, who would publish more of his works than any other house. The set was issued with a dedication to Josepha Auernhammer, a pupil of Mozart's with whom his name was romantically linked during his early days in Vienna. She was a fine keyboard player, although apparently not very attractive looking. Mozart defended himself from gossip by painting a very unflattering picture of the young lady in a letter to his father. Mozart was no doubt being ingenuous (he initially did much the same when writing home about his future wife Constanze), since he certainly continued to see Josepha. Like all this group of sonatas, the E flat is in three movements, thus abandoning the galant two-movement structure of the previous group (K. 301 - K. 306, composed in Mannheim and Paris in 1778). Here it is the central Andante con moto in G minor that particularly takes the attention, its chromatic inflections giving the movement a feel of restless agitation. It is framed by an opening Allegro with much brilliant passage work and a concluding Rondeau with a hunting horn theme announced by the piano and subsequently taken up by the violin.

Mozart entered the Adagio for piano in B minor, K. 540, into his List of All My Works on March 19, 1788. It was composed between the Prague and Vienna premieres of Don Giovanni.

Mozart rarely used the key of B minor; his only other movement in this key is the Adagio from the Quartet for flute, violin, viola, and cello, K. 285, composed eleven years earlier. The key must have held special significance, for next to the entry in his personal catalogue Mozart wrote, H moll (B minor), the only time he ever listed the key of a work. Throughout this short piece, Mozart creates a tense, emotional atmosphere through the poignant use of suspensions and diminished sevenths.

Mozart's sense of symmetry and balance is everywhere evident in this highly dramatic but eerie and weary work. In sonata form, the piece opens by outlining a B minor triad; the rhythmically diverse theme continues through several dynamic changes. After an unexpected stop on the dominant, the theme begins again, but in the left hand, initiating the transition to D major (the relative major, a third above the tonic). The transition is brief, and the second theme consists of an ascending arpeggio, played forte, deep in the lower register of the piano, immediately balanced by a rising half step in the treble, played piano, after crossing the hands. Balance is again an issue in the development section, which starts with the main theme on G major (a third below the tonic), followed by the second theme, but inverted. Here, a descending arpeggio in the treble is answered by a rising half step in the bass. The recapitulation proceeds as we might expect, without the transitional passage. After a repeat of the entire development/recapitulation complex, a brief coda built of new material closes the piece in B major.

Mozart's Adagio has inspired numerous writers to wax poetic about musical meaning. Representative is Wilhelm Mohr, who in 1962 wrote, Everyone who knows and loves the work agrees that in it the spirit of music has taken on form and sonority in one sublimely significant moment. One may try to get at it with analyses, but, however thoughtful they may be one realizes at the end of all effort that the true mystery begins only after them.

  • Mozart - Variations on Mio caro adone, K180 Ingrid Haebler

    8:40

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (27 January 1756 – 5 December 1791) was one of the most influential, popular and prolific composers of the classical period. A child prodigy, from an early age he began composing over 600 works, including some of the most famous pieces of symphonic, chamber, operatic, and choral music.

    Variations (6) on Salieri's Mio caro adone, for piano in G major, K. 180 (K. 173c) Vienna, Spring 1773.

    Ingrid Haebler, piano

    Description by Robert Cummings
Here is another set of keyboard variations by Mozart, this time written on a theme by the man who has been portrayed as his bitterly jealous rival (Research proofs this doubtful sic.). The young composer was still in his teens when he wrote this work and must have held some admiration for Salieri at the time. Mio caro adone (My dear Adonis) comes in the last scene of Salieri's opera La fiera di Venezia (The Proud Woman of Venice). The work opens with the Andante theme, a demure, elegant minuet of only mild distinction. The first variation is sprightly, imparting color to the slightly gray textures of the melody. The ensuing variant is lively and more muscular, while the third is fast and light, gracefully hurrying along. The fourth is rife with trills and a sense of playfulness, and the charming, songful fifth, marked Adagio, is livelier than its marking would normally suggest. The final variation is a jaunty, colorful Allegretto that ends almost comically, with arpeggiated chords that seem to blissfully hop to a sudden stop. This attractive set of variations has a duration of about ten minutes.

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (27 January 1756 – 5 December 1791), baptised as Johannes Chrysostomus Wolfgangus Theophilus Mozart, was a prolific and influential composer of the classical era. According to Bartje Bartmans one of the greatest and brightest stars on the firmament.

    Piano Sonata No. 11 in A major, K.331 (300i) Salzburg? 1783
Edition Peters lists it as Paris, 1778

    I. Andante grazioso (0:00)
    II. Menuetto (15:02)
III. Alla turca – Allegretto (21:38)

    Ingrid Haebler, piano

    Description by Brian Robins [-]
The Sonata in A is the second of three sonatas now established as likely to have been composed during 1783, perhaps during the period Mozart and his wife Constanze spent in Salzburg in the summer months of that year. This was the occasion on which the composer introduced his new bride to his father Leopold. Mozart clearly intended this trio to form a group, numbering them from one to three. They were almost certainly composed with his Viennese pupils in mind, teaching forming one of Mozart's principal sources of income during his early years in the Austrian capital. The present sonata has gained particular fame for its last movement, the Rondo alla turca. That movement took its inspiration from the popularity of quasi-Turkish music in Vienna, a fashionable form already exploited by Mozart in his German singspiel, Die Entführung aus dem Serail (The Abduction form the Harem) of the previous year. The Rondo includes a march-like B section in a major key with rolled block chords that evoked the drums of the Turkish Janissary bands, ancestors of the modern marching band. Some commentators have also heard echoes of the opera in the opening movement, which, uniquely among Mozart's sonatas, is a set of variations. Its lilting theme one of the composer's most memorable inventions. The central movement is a Minuetto in the tonic key of A, with a central trio section in D, making the sonata also unique in Mozart's output in that none of the three movements is in sonata form. Along with its two companions, the A major Sonata was published in Vienna by Artaria in 1784, rapidly attaining a popularity that has persisted until the present day. As with so many of Mozart's works, it offers much for both Kenner and Liebhaber, connoisseurs and mere lovers. Its Turkish element places it among the first pieces of music in the European tradition to show any kind of non-Western influence. Beyond that, it offers a greater-than-usual complement of unforgettable Mozartian melodies.

The sonata was published by Artaria in 1784, alongside Nos. 10 and 12 (K. 330 and K. 332). And it is this edition I used for this video.

Piano Sonata No. 18 in D major, K.576. Vienna, July 1789

    1. Allegro (0:00)
    2. Adagio (5:28)
    3. Allegretto (10:41)

    Ingrid Haebler, piano

    Description by James Manheim [-]
Pity the pianist who relies on Mozart's designation of K. 576 as a leichte Klaviersonate -- an easy piano sonata. The work was written in 1789, shortly after the composer's return from a largely unsuccessful concert tour of Potsdam, Leipzig, and finally, Berlin, where the sonata may have been aimed at a princess at the Prussian court. Little came of Mozart's journey in the way of fresh commissions, and small wonder: some have suggested that this D major sonata is actually the most difficult of the composer's 18 in technical terms. The technical problems come not in the sprightly thematic material, but in its thoroughly contrapuntal treatment, perhaps inspired by Mozart's visit to Leipzig and his reacquaintance with the dormant but still enormously influential masterpieces of J.S. Bach. The sonata has three movements in the usual fast-slow-fast configuration. The first movement, an Allegro in a jaunty 6/8 time, abounds with imitative entrances that, taken individually, might have come from Bach inventions, but they resolve themselves into chordally accompanied scale material; the music never loses its graceful, Classical flow. This sonata, owing to its horn-call opening, has sometimes been given the nicknames of Trumpet or Hunt, and the work's basic intellectual attraction is established at the outset when this stereotypical figure is unexpectedly subjected to imitation. The second subject area of the exposition is extracted from the opening material in a way Haydn would have been proud of, and the development section is an especially dense contrapuntal essay. The Adagio middle movement, in A major, is a limpid melody gently darkened by chromatic runs, and the Allegretto finale, nearly as contrapuntal as the first movement, sandwiches forte, chromatic, and virtuosic treatments of its main material between the seemingly meek statements of that material that mark off the movement's basic divisions. This was Mozart's last piano sonata, and it perennially appeals both to pianists seeking a Mozartean challenge and to those interested in the point of counterpoint in Mozart's late works.
