  • Herbie Hancock - This is What Modal Jazz Really is

    10:36

When You think about Modal Jazz then usually you think about playing on one chord or vamp using the same sound all the time. That is not how Herbie Hancock approaches it in this solo on the Wayne Shorter song Witchhunt off the Speak No Evil album. This Herbie Hancock Lesson breaks down a lot of great surprising rhythms and melodies, moving in and out of the tonality, and adding some Atonal Chromatic ideas as well.

To me, this is one of the greatest Herbie Solos I know, and also a fantastic example of how to play medium swing and play some fantastic rhythmical ideas.

  • Modal Jazz Improvisation-Part 1 | Improv 101 Ep. 7 | Jazz Tactics

    10:08

Compared to other forms of jazz, modal tunes are relatively simple, however that doesn't mean they are without their challenges. This video explains the easiest way to understand modes in a jazz context and offers practice tips for developing fluency with the scales one will use over a typical two-chord modal progression. Backing tracks are from Jamey Aebersold Volume 28, 'John Coltrane'.

The Improv 101 series is a step-by-step approach to jazz improvisation. Watch them in sequence to gain an understanding of the basic elements of the jazz language.

On this channel, jazz trumpeter and author Chase Sanborn offers advice and tips for musicians and music students, based on more than forty years of experience as a professional musician. In today's lesson we'll discuss one of the best sounding chord substitutions in jazz: the relative minor substitutions, also called modal sequencing. It consists of a series of minor chords a minor third (=3 semitones) apart, used whenever you're playing a 2-5-1 progression. Done right, it can really make you sound advanced! This is used by players from Bill Evans to Anomalie and many, many others. I hope you enjoy!

  • How To Sound Great On A m7 Static Chord - Modal Comping

    9:18

You need strategies for Jazz Comping in modal or static chord sections of songs. When you start learning Jazz comping on the guitar then you learn to play progressions, focusing on how to connect the chords play through the changes and get that to sound good and natural.

But the skills you develop with this won't help you when there is a long stretch of one chord, like modal jazz, and there is no chord progression that automatically makes your jazz chords sound interesting.

In this video, I am going to go over some examples of how to comp jazz guitar on a static chord, develop some phrases, add extra chords, chromatic sounds and other things to make your jazz guitar comping more interesting.

  • Modal Guitar Solo - Sound melodic! ???? Call and Response and Motifs- Jazz guitar Solo Lesson

    8:30

You need to have Call and Response and motifs and other melodic devices to play melodic solos over a modal background.

Soloing over a modal background can in many ways be more difficult than playing over a song with changes. The main reason being that if the chords are moving, you can fall back on that to introduce something new in the solo while you just follow the changes. When you solo over a one chord vamp you have to work harder to make variations and keep the listeners attention.

This lesson is introducing some techniques and aspects that you can use to create more interesting modal solos.

  • Ahmad Jamal ~ One Jazz Pianist | Jazz | Modal jazz

    7:27

Since the early 1950s, Jamal has been a driving force in jazz, profoundly influencing a number of musicians including Miles Davis and John Coltrane. Jamal's earliest recording sessions were with piano, bass and guitar; he soon replaced the guitar with drums. In each of these formats, Jamal's approach was groundbreaking. In an essay on Jamal, the great critic Stanley Crouch wrote, Through the use of space and changes of rhythm and tempo, Jamal invented a group sound that had all the surprise and dynamic variation of an imaginatively imagined big band.

Though Jamal occasionally works with larger groups, string sections and orchestras, it is the jazz piano trio format that he revolutionized and continues to explore. As a birthday salute to one of the true masters of jazz, here are five selections from Ahmad Jamal's staggering and ever-expanding body of small-group work.

This Allan Holdsworth lesson will look at three-chord voicings and show how you can take them through a scale and use them to make a greatly varied comp over a modal D Dorian background. I will also talk about how you can use the different textures or sounds that the different chord voicings create to have more options available while comping.

  • 13. So What - Miles Davis Modal Jazz

    6:03

So What (1959) by Miles Davis is in the Modal Jazz style. Miles Davis recorded one of the best selling jazz albums of all time Kind of Blue in what is known as modal jazz style. Modal jazz originated in the late 1950s and 1960s and uses musical modes or scales possessing characteristic melodic sounds, rather than using the previous common chord progressions as a harmonic framework. A few musical modes you may have heard of include Dorian, Lydian, and Aeolian. An easily identifying characteristic of modal jazz is the slow-moving harmonic rhythm, where single chords may last four to sixteen or more measures. So What is an example of jazz in the Dorian mode.
