Today, we are going over the basics of mixing bass! The song in today's episode is The Owl Song by Me and the City.

This song has a bass DI. – A bass guitar plugged straight into the front of the interface.
In areas it gets super loud and then it disappears, so its dynamic range is massive! This is very typical for most bass guitar performances.

I’m going to show you a couple of different approaches that I take while mixing bass guitars!

The main driving force in this song is actually a pair of acoustics that were recorded with some Lewitt LCT 140’s which are fairly inexpensive microphones. There is a little bit of compression going on the way in so they are sort of in the ball park.

After taking a listen to the first thing you may notice is a little bit of excessive low end, but only a tiny bit. What I’m going to do just to get it out of the way of the bass, since the guitars are panned hard left and hard right we’re going to grab a stock EQ plugin.

  • 5 Quick Reverb Mixing Tricks - Warren Huart: Produce Like A Pro

    16:26

➡️ ➡️ Before you start using reverb, make sure you download this FREE Reverb Tricks cheatsheet right now:

Trick 1: EQ your reverb: 4:09
Trick 2: Pan Your reverbs: 6:54
Trick 3: Trigger your Snare reverb from the sample: 8:54
Trick 4: Use multiple reverbs on Vocals: 11:19
Trick 5: Compress your reverb: 15:14

Learning how to use reverb is essential in mixing. It can add width and distance between you instruments. Reverb can also make your tracks sound like they were recorded in a completely different space. This is particularly helpful if you are recording in a bedroom or small home studio environment and you want your tracks to have that big studio sound! The biggest mistake that you can make with reverb is going overboard and making a washy muddy sound mix where everything is smeared together in reverb.

  • Mixing on headphones - Warren Huart: Produce Like A Pro

    12:44

➡️➡️Practice your mixing skills on a professionally recorded session and use this song on your resume to attract new clients. Download the free multitracks here:

I know a handful of people that mix on headphones. I have varying degrees of thoughts on that. I get it, some of us are in bedrooms, our parents house, married with kids (not wanting to wake them up at 3AM!) But if you can, try to at least use headphones and small speakers- take frequent breaks, do car tests, and all of the other things that you can do to give yourself a lot of variety of listening experiences.

The thing with headphones that we have to remember is that they’re very fatiguing when you have them strapped to your head. You’ve GOT TO watch the volume. The work that I’m familiar with that has been mixed only entirely on headphones, most of the time.. not all of the time, tends to have a lack of depth. It tends to get very very upfront, really loud, and that happens to me all the time. There seems to be a spacial disconnect.

    Mixing on headphones (FAQ Friday)
We have a lot of great questions this week including:
    • Do you have a service where we can pay for you to critique our mix/production? (of our personal work)
    • What if I don’t have any studios monitors yet….. would you advise me to mix on headphones??
    • Should the drum room be dampened or a wood floor?
    • What is the workflow for broadcasting live on Youtube?
    • Is your gear (or most of it) turned on all day so that it’s ready to go?

  • Mixing in Mono: A Secret Weapon?

    23:39

➡️➡️ Click here to learn more about mixing in mono:

Whether or not you should be mixing in mono is something that we have talked about before, and that always seems to be a question that comes up. When I interview some of the greatest mixers in the industry, like Bob Clearmountain, they all say that they may check something in mono, if they are unsure about the phase, but they never mix in mono.

So why is there so much discussion about mixing in mono?

One of the main arguments for mixing in mono is to get the balances right. I would agree with this, but it is important to keep in mind that if you are taking things that are creating stereo width, like the ambience, they will be folded underneath significantly. Part of the reason we work in stereo is to do things that don’t work in mono, such as throwing ambience out to the left and right.

Another benefit of working in mono would be where you are using widening plugins and creating phase issues. I use these very sparingly – maybe just on a synth pad or something that feels super mono to widen it up a bit – but if you are going to use them, you may run into phase issues, and listening in mono can help you detect these.

Just as important as listening in mono, though, is listening to one side at a time. You can hear exactly where things are sitting in the mix, and adjust them if they are not quite where you want them.

The main reason Bob Clearmountain and the other legendary mixers I have interviewed say they don’t mix in mono is because they have decades of experience that allows them to hear phase issues in a stereo signal.

Mixing and listening in mono is a great tool to have as you develop you ear and your skills because it helps you detect issues you may not have noticed in stereo. You want your mix to sound good in stereo, of course, but mixing in mono is an amazing way to find phase or polarity issues that are difficult to hear in stereo!

Song: Old Fashioned Way by Todd Kessler

In this episode of MakeMineMusic, Marc Daniel Nelson talks about how automation and transitions can make or break your mixes. This topic has been talked about a handful of times on YouTube over the past few years, but what Marc feels is missing is a really good example of a before and an after. It is hard to really tell what the automation is doing if you aren’t given a good example of what the mix sounds like with it and without it.

Today, he is mixing a session from an album he produced a few years back. The song is called “Old Fashioned Way” by Todd Kessler. The mix is pretty much where he likes it, but he feels like it needs some more movement, some feelings, some transitions, to really take it up another step.

The print mix he is starting with is has no automation on it, and then he will do the automation on the whole project and print that, so that you can hear the difference between the two and really hear how the automation takes a good mix up another level.

Follow as he gives tips on how and why automation can enhance your emotional connection with the music. You can also download the multitracks to the song so you can truly hear the difference and also mix the song for yourself!

  • 5 Quick EQ Mixing Tricks - Warren Huart: Produce Like A Pro

    21:49

►► Get the 5 Quick EQ Mixing Tricks cheatsheet here:

1.Bass Guitar EQ Multiple sources differently to create one great sound.

    i. With the first source, the DI, control lows and highs with EQ filters- Using a stock plugin, set around 170-200Hz, and everything above that is low passed away. After that is another EQ, which is a less than 60Hz (this can drop lower to 40hz) and gently sloping, controlling the low end, giving room for the Kick Drum.

ii. With the Bass Amp High Pass at the same point around 170-200hz allowing the high end of the Bass Amp to give the sound personality.

iii. You can also duplicate the Bass Amp and follow the same steps above but also use to add additional Saturation or Distortion to help it glue together with the guitars.

2.Brighten Electric Guitar and Controlling Excessive High End 8:37

Hi Friends, I regularly work with drums that have been recorded in small rooms, which don't sound as massive as I would like right from the beginning. I image many of you find yourselves in the same position, so this tutorial shows you how to make your drums sound bigger and more ambient than they actually are:
I'll teach you a technique I've learnt from legendary rock mixer Andy Wallace. With this technique you can shape your reverb and make your drums sound like they were recorded in a huge space – all just by using stock plugins in protools.

I'll show you how to smoothly edit an uneven drum groove without making your edits too noticeable or obnoxious sounding.

I hope you enjoy this tutorial!

    Many Thanks,

    Warren

In this episode, watch Marc Daniel Nelson break down his personal Pro Tools Template. Marc walks through his in-the-box chain all the way down to his analog chain. Marc has been asked about showing more depth about what his digital template looks like, and he is going to show us that, along with what his out of the box chain looks like. For his out of the box chain, he will be talking about the summing, the compression, the EQ, and the conversion, because even with the conversion it is going to make a big difference on the sound.

People talk a lot about why they designed their templates the way they did, and for Marc, is was about making it easy. He wanted to make it so that anyone who opens the session is able to navigate it and understand what is happening. This goes all the way down to labelling auxiliaries, sends, and more, and colour coding everything so that it is basically identical from song to song.

Marc will be demonstrating what in-the-box vs out-of-the-box sounds like on a rock song. He uses a song he just mixed that was Geoff Emerick's final project before he passed away. This song is “Aimee” by Lena Anderssen, produced by Geoff Emerick, and Niclas Johannesen.
