Today, we are going over the basics of mixing bass! The song in today's episode is The Owl Song by Me and the City.

This song has a bass DI. – A bass guitar plugged straight into the front of the interface.
In areas it gets super loud and then it disappears, so its dynamic range is massive! This is very typical for most bass guitar performances.

I’m going to show you a couple of different approaches that I take while mixing bass guitars!

We’re going to do another part in our mixing basics series!

In this series, we are mixing this song completely and utterly in the box using only stock plugins. So far we’ve worked on the vocal, bass guitar, and drums. I’m sure you can guess what we’re working on today based on that and the title. - haha.

The main driving force in this song is actually a pair of acoustics that were recorded with some Lewitt LCT 140’s which are fairly inexpensive microphones. There is a little bit of compression going on the way in so they are sort of in the ball park.

After taking a listen to the first thing you may notice is a little bit of excessive low end, but only a tiny bit. What I’m going to do just to get it out of the way of the bass, since the guitars are panned hard left and hard right we’re going to grab a stock EQ plugin.

  • 5 Quick EQ Mixing Tricks - Warren Huart: Produce Like A Pro

    21:49

►► Get the 5 Quick EQ Mixing Tricks cheatsheet here:

1.Bass Guitar EQ Multiple sources differently to create one great sound.

    i. With the first source, the DI, control lows and highs with EQ filters- Using a stock plugin, set around 170-200Hz, and everything above that is low passed away. After that is another EQ, which is a less than 60Hz (this can drop lower to 40hz) and gently sloping, controlling the low end, giving room for the Kick Drum.

ii. With the Bass Amp High Pass at the same point around 170-200hz allowing the high end of the Bass Amp to give the sound personality.

iii. You can also duplicate the Bass Amp and follow the same steps above but also use to add additional Saturation or Distortion to help it glue together with the guitars.

2.Brighten Electric Guitar and Controlling Excessive High End 8:37

3.Creating a great Kick Sound Using Multiple Mics 11:41

4.Carve out Low Mids and high pass Low End from Room Mics to create room for your Kick 14:41

  • 5 Quick Panning Mixing Tricks - Warren Huart: Produce Like A Pro

    31:01

➡️ ➡️ Before you start panning, make sure you download this FREE Panning Tricks cheatsheet right now:

Panning helps us create space in a mix. It can also help us create a more immersive musical experience for our listeners.

Making sure we have just the right amount of space can sometimes be complicated. To help you out, I’ve put together 5 panning tricks to get you started!

    Listen to the song here:

    5 Panning Tricks Featured:
    1. Pan Affected Source Opposite Of The Dry Source For More Stereo Width
    2. Create 'Ear Candy’ and additional movement With FX and Panning
3.Create Excitement With Automating Panning On Harmonies
    4. Panning Cymbal FX For More Excitement
    5. Using Panning To Differentiate A Section Of A Song

I wrote this song with the singer of the band “Little Empire.” I wrote this song and recorded it at the same time. It is one of the most simplistic songs I think I’ve written and recorded in years. Not necessarily the writing of it. Melodically, it’s quite interesting. I’ve got kind of a dark Police 9th chord going through it all the time. But the production is INSANELY simple.

We did this song in no time. Not that we were rushed, it’s just simple. For example, the drums have no cymbals!

  • 5 Quick Reverb Mixing Tricks - Warren Huart: Produce Like A Pro

    16:26

➡️ ➡️ Before you start using reverb, make sure you download this FREE Reverb Tricks cheatsheet right now:

Trick 1: EQ your reverb: 4:09
Trick 2: Pan Your reverbs: 6:54
Trick 3: Trigger your Snare reverb from the sample: 8:54
Trick 4: Use multiple reverbs on Vocals: 11:19
Trick 5: Compress your reverb: 15:14

Learning how to use reverb is essential in mixing. It can add width and distance between you instruments. Reverb can also make your tracks sound like they were recorded in a completely different space. This is particularly helpful if you are recording in a bedroom or small home studio environment and you want your tracks to have that big studio sound! The biggest mistake that you can make with reverb is going overboard and making a washy muddy sound mix where everything is smeared together in reverb.

  • 5 Quick Modulation Mixing Tricks - Warren Huart: Produce Like A Pro

    21:31

➡️ ➡️ Before you start using modulation, make sure you download this FREE Modulation Tricks cheatsheet right now:

    5 Quick Modulation Tricks:
    1. Widening a mono guitar 0:32
    2. Modulation on your reverb 4:04
    3. Detuning the snare low & to the key of the song 8:32
    4. Create an octave down vocal 13:16
    5. Modulation to thicken vocals 16:04

Get the multitracks for the song used in this tutorial here:

5 Quick Modulation Tricks in detail:

    1. Widening a mono guitar 0:32
This trick can work for any mono instrument source you get. Very often I hear mixes where someone has taken a mono guitar and panned it to one side and then panned a delayed version of the same guitar to the opposite side in an attempt to create stereo width. This never seems to sound that satisfying, even giving the feeling that there are phase/polarity issues. The way to combat that is to adjust the pitch of the delayed source. By simply flattening the guitar a few cents the width is properly created and also gives a very cool guitar sound! Many delays, like the stock Avid one I used in the demonstration have Pitch Change built in, however if they don’t you can simply add pitch before the delay to create the same effect!

  • Mixing Home Studio Drums - Warren Huart: Produce Like A Pro

    54:49

How to mix drums recorded in a home studio – and make them sound huge!
Download the Multitracks for free: ‎‎
Follow Produce Like A Pro on Facebook:

Today, we're starting a new series of tutorials:

I'm going to show you how I mixed the Indie-Pop Stay New by Little Empire from start to finish completely in the box, not using any outboard equipment.
You'll get to download the multitrack session of the song, follow along with the tutorials and mix the song for yourself. – All completely for free.

Our first lesson is all about Mixing Home Studio Drums.

I think this tutorial will be very valuable to a lot of you, especially if you're in the early stages of your career:
When starting out, most of us don't have the luxury to record in high-end studios like NRG, United Recording or others, which have beautiful sounding live rooms, great mic selections and make it easy for to get the perfect drum sound at the source.

Instead, you might be recording drums in your rehearsal room or even a small bedroom with a limited set of microphones.

And you know what? IT DOESN'T MATTER!

You can still get a great drum sound out of these recordings by getting creative and applying the right kind of processing in the mixing stage. In today's tutorial I'm going to show you how!

The drums we're mixing today were recorded in a bedroom-sized room at my home studio, with a minimal mic setup and a drummer that played quite dynamically. A perfect example of what most of us are working with on a daily basis.

    Topics discussed in this tutorial:

    - How to mix live drums recorded with a minimal set of mics and use samples and reverb to create a huge drum sound.
    - Drum Bus Compression to add glue to your kit and make it sound cohesive.
    - Tame highly dynamic performances by using compression.
    - How to EQ kick drums, remove room resonance and make them sound powerful and energetic.
    - Enhancing your kick sound and helping it to cut through a dense mix by using samples.
    - Increase the impact of your chorus by adding extra weight to your drums.
    - Keep your phase in check to ensure a full and punchy sound.
    - Snare EQ.
    - Tighten up your snare and remove high-hat bleed using gates.
    - Creating fake ambience and room sound to make your drums sound big and create the illusion of a live room.
    - Toms: Controlling bleed using volume automation, EQ, limiting and compression to tame dynamics and add impact.
    - Production choices and though process.

  • Top 5 Mixing Mistakes No One Talks About

    24:41

➡️➡️Click here to learn more about the mixing mistakes no one talks about & download the cheat sheet:

1.EQ with your Ears NOT your Eyes!

Always make EQ moves based on what you hear first, not what you see! Using EQs with Frequency Analysers can be such a rewarding thing when you’re looking for a frequency that’s bothering you, but relying on visual cues alone to make EQ adjustments will not give you great results. Just because there’s a peak doesn’t mean it has to be removed, that might the inherent characteristic of the instrument. When you hear something that bothers you and you need a visual cue to find it then a frequency analyzer is an amazing tool!

2.You Don’t Need to Compress Everything

Not everything needs to be compressed! So many virtual sounds, fat synth sounds and of course very heavy guitars will not benefit from compression and often sound much smaller with added compression. Live drums give you a wealth of not only different dynamics and uneven EQ based on how they are performed and so they require more compression than programmed drums that have been recorded in perfect conditions with very evenly sampled drum hits. Compression (especially vintage units or emulations) can be used for certain colours, adding saturation and even an EQ characteristic, however, as a dynamic controller you should focus using it on overly dynamic sounds like Vocals and other acoustic instruments, while using it sparingly on instruments that have a very limited dynamics range but may require some added colouration that compression may bring.

3.Not Everything Has To Be Stereo

When everything is in stereo, overheads, pianos, room mics, reverbs, delays, stereo recorded guitars, you name it, then nothing starts to feel wide! If you want width then be selective what you put in the sides! Hard panned guitars Left and Right feel great when the ambience is only opposite, as soon as it’s smeared in the stereo field then the guitar sound doesn’t feel focussed! If you make the overheads full 100% left and right then you set the limits of the width of your mix, try 70% or 80% panning of your overheads and room mics and then the hard panned guitars will start to feel like they are spilling out of the left and right speakers!

4.Don’t Start Processing The Tracks Until You’ve Got Basic Levels and Panning

Create what you think is a good sounding rough mix getting basic balances and panning on every track first. This will tell you so much more than just starting to mix using EQ and compression. Hearing the tracks back relatively balanced and panned, allows you to choose which tracks need extra EQ or high passing and/or compression. Ultimately the lesson is to always listen as a whole! We all solo, however making sure the changes you are making works in the whole song is of paramount importance!

    5.Do Less!!

Professional mixers always say that when they get sessions to mix and the first thing they do is remove an enormous amount of plug ins on each track and suddenly the song starts to come to life! We can tie ourselves in so many knots by continually adding EQ and compression until everything instrument feels flat and lifeless! Soon the more you do the more you have to do! Take frequent ear breaks to gain perspective and always remember to listen to the song as a whole.

  • Do you gain stage tracks before mixing? | FAQ Friday - Warren Huart: Produce Like A Pro

    18:55

Do you gain stage tracks before mixing? Read more about gain staging here:
What a great question! Yes! Quite often!

Not on stuff that I’ve recorded because I record it at a level that makes sense through my equipment, but definitely when people send me stuff. I get sent stuff that is super super hot, and then barely audible!

If it’s clipping, there’s not a lot I can do.

I’ll bring it down as much as possible- there are a number of plugins out there which can remove clips. There not perfect, but they do help.

More often than not, I see the opposite. Sometimes we’re sent tracks that I don’t know there’s audio on there until we zoom in 500% – 600% and then suddenly a track will start to appear. Usually that’s okay because it’s a digital only signal- so there’s no inherent noise in there.

There are times when, unfortunately, there is a lot of noise. You start amplifying the tracks so it’s actually loud enough to be able to use, you bring up the gain, but you’re also bringing up a huge amount of noise. Hence, the signal to noise ratio is not good!

Those are the times that I gain stage before mixing. As I said before, I don’t do it on my own stuff because we’re printing at nice big fat tones that I can do whatever I want with!

❤️We cover the following questions during this episode of FAQ Friday!
➡️When bouncing, how do you feel about master bus processing? The SSL bus compressor doing about 2 to 3 dB of compression for instance. (1:26)
➡️Do you gain stage tracks before mixing? (7:27)
➡️Do you think it makes sense to look for a mixing engineer who uses the same DAW as oneself? This way one could send the DAW files and the engineer could open the project and enable or disable the effects within the project himself without needing to go back and forth with the different tracks? What are your thoughts? (10:25)
➡️How much processing should be applied to a sampled drum kit in EZ drummer where there are perfect samples? Should compression and EQ still be applied to each sound and to the drum bus or is this just a taste thing? (14:33)
➡️How much reverb is enough? How much is too much? I often struggle balancing getting ambience in my productions without making them sound too wooly. (16:34)

➡️➡️Click here to download the multitracks for Golden by We Were Astronauts:
➡️➡️Click here to learn more about Gullfoss by Soundtheory:

Today, we are trying out an exciting new plugin: Gullfoss by Soundtheory! This plugin is an easy-to-use tool that contains a set of basic parameters that can be adjusted to improve the clarity, detail, spatiality, and balance of a mix or recording in a matter of seconds.

The Gullfoss plugin listens to a signal and decides how to prepare the audio so you can get the most information out of it. It allows you to analyze the audio and make quick and precise fixes that would otherwise be unsolvable or take huge amounts of time and experience to find.

What we are going to be doing today is using the Gullfoss plugin as an analysis tool on a mix. This is a mix of “Golden” by We Were Astronauts, that I started on a live stream a few days ago, so we will be mixing a little more today. If you haven’t downloaded the multitracks yet, click here to download them!

The idea of the Gullfoss plugin is to use the things that you are learning from looking at the Gullfoss EQ curves in order to fix issues in your mix. This is something that I really love about this plugin! By using this as an analysis tool, I was able to focus in on areas where I was seeing huge cuts and huge boosts and fix those issues quickly and easily. This is a tool that can help you create better mixes by helping you see issues you may not have been able to find on your own, or at least help you identify them more quickly!

  • Using Drum Samples In A Mix | FAQ Friday- Warren Huart: Produce Like A Pro

    19:23

Everyone has a different way of using drum samples! Leave a comment below and let me know how you do it!

We have a lot of very very wonderful questions this week beginning with, “If you’re using a kick sample, to avoid actually placing the sample manually for every kick hit, is there a program or method you use so that the sample you’re working with lines up with each kick hit?”

Yes! There are a couple of different things! – If you’re just using generic samples and you’re not using Addictive, Easy Drummer, Superior or the Slate Trigger- and you’re just manually placing them, in Pro Tools you can use what’s called sound replacer! I believe you can use ad load in three different samples and then you can blend them.

I answer the following questions during this week's FAQ Friday!
➡️ Is it better to edit and mix songs with headphones connected to your pc or to you interface? is there a big difference? (0:38)
➡️ What if you only have the backtrack and not the actual vocal how would you mix it while still leave the space for the vocal? (4:52)
➡️ How do you set the volume of multiple pieces of equipment? Such as your computer vs monitors/speakers vs audio interface. Do you set your monitors and computer to 100% and use the interface as the master volume? (6:01)
➡️ Should I edit first and then align and check phase on all the tracks? or align fix any phase issues and the do all my edits? (7:51 )
➡️ Regarding clarity, could you illustrate the conflicts that you address when trying to get clarity in a mix? (I.e., accentuate them somehow so we can hear them clearly? As clear as YouTube will allow anyway.) (9:17)
➡️ If you're using a kick sample to avoid actually placing the sample manually for every kick hit is there a program or method you use so that the sample you're working with lines up with each kick hit. (11:55)
➡️ In what situations would you use a dynamic, condenser or ribbon for the kick out? (14:07)

  • Big Guitars Production Trick - Warren Huart: Produce Like A Pro

    11:19

This is a trick I learned from Mr. Dave Jerden and his old engineer, Mr. Bryan Carlstrom.
    Mixing Course this is from:-
    The Yamaha Guitar I play:-
This is a trick that they would do to build a big guitar sound. All you need is 1 amp, a guitar, a bass, and a wah pedal. Not only will you find this trick fun, but it will also give you a big meaty guitar sound!

We’re going to look at a simple 4 chord sequence- all we’ve got is a bass line and some drums - we’re going to build some heavy rhythms to go overtop of it.

You can hear the whole song here:-

Hi Friends, I regularly work with drums that have been recorded in small rooms, which don't sound as massive as I would like right from the beginning. I image many of you find yourselves in the same position, so this tutorial shows you how to make your drums sound bigger and more ambient than they actually are:
I'll teach you a technique I've learnt from legendary rock mixer Andy Wallace. With this technique you can shape your reverb and make your drums sound like they were recorded in a huge space – all just by using stock plugins in protools.

I'll show you how to smoothly edit an uneven drum groove without making your edits too noticeable or obnoxious sounding.

I hope you enjoy this tutorial!

    Many Thanks,

    Warren
