J.S. Bach on the Inventions and Sinfonias:
Honest method, by which the amateurs of the keyboard -- especially, however, those desirous of learning -- are shown a clear way not only (1) to learn to play cleanly in two parts, but also, after further progress, (2) to handle three obligate parts correctly and well; and along with this not only to obtain good inventions (ideas) but to develop the same well; above all, however, to achieve a cantabile style in playing and at the same time acquire a strong foretaste of composition.

Miles Okazaki has made a second home of The Jazz Gallery dating back to releasing his debut album Mirrors. Since then, Miles has used The Jazz Gallery stage as a platform to workshop and debut projects. In 2009, Okazaki was commissioned by The Jazz Gallery to compose and premiere a brand new project of which came out his live album Figurations, and much later in 2016 in between regular appearances, he returned with a brand new project, Trickster, which he was workshopping just before entering the studio. After the release of the album, pianist Matt Mitchell joined as Trickster's newest member when the band began touring more often, which resulted in a very tight-knit sound with the band going into many different musical territories. This performance showcases an in-between time period between the release of Trickster and The Sky Below, the band's second album.

This performance is from the second set of the March 16 2018 performance.

  • Building 12 Tones

    4:04

Visualization of the construction of a lattice of 12 chromatic tones in a 5 limit Just Intonation harmonic system. There are many ways to build a 12-tone system - this one is fairly simple and elegant. Pictured above the lattice is a monochord, which visualizes a string divided into two parts. The two sections of the string will have a frequency relationship described by the ratio on the lattice. A similar lattice structure can be found in Helmholtz' On the Sensations of Tone, and W.A. Mathieu's The Harmonic Experience.
For those who object to negative partials and the idea of a subharmonic series, just think of it backwards. (i.e. instead of saying Ab is the negative 5th partial of C, just say C is the 5th partial of Ab). C pedal is played throughout, to hear the beats between the two pitches.
