  • Milcho Leviev plays Imagine and Bulgarian Boogie

    12:30

Milcho Leviev gets invited on stage after attending a classical concert in Sofia (Bulgaria) in 1990 given to celebrate the New Year and the end of 45 years of dictatorship in Bulgaria.
Given those circumstances (and the fact that Milcho fled Bulgaria himself in 1970), makes playing Imagine just about the perfect choice. He gives the greatest rendition I have ever heard and one that certainly would have made John Lennon proud.
One of those goose bumps moments...

  • Fire Dance by Milcho Leviev - Don Ellis Orchestra, April 1973

    6:47

At some point, Milcho renamed this Peasant Dance. It pops up in combo form on various other recordings, most notably on albums by Airto and Free Flight. (I prefer the first title.)

Milcho may have written this as an alternative to the band's Bulgarian Bulge, which was always popular with audiences. Though that chart was in 33/16 and this one is all in 4/4.

This particular version features Sam Falzone on clarinet. The bass drum at the beginning may be Milcho himself. I saw a live performance of this once and Don made several remarks about Milcho playing the Bulgarian bass drum. There was quite a bit of theatrics around Milcho rolling the drum around the stage while playing it.

The opening clarinet solo has a few audio glitches from the source recording.

    When I see, mother dear,
    How my brother hates me,
How he hates me and envies me.

I'll tell you why he does, my dearest child,
He hates you and envies you,
Because you are my first-born son.

  • Sophronica and Virgil - Don Ellis Orchestra, written by Milcho Leviev

    3:47

This comes from an engagement at the Great American Music Hall in San Francisco March 28-29, 1975. The band at this time sort of reverted back to a more standard instrumentation. Gone are the strings and French horn from the previous incarnation of the orchestra. (The percussion section was still expanded.) Soloists–other than Milcho on the Fender Rhodes piano–are unidentified.

I asked Milcho about the origin of the title. In a characteristically Milchovian manner, his girlfriend at the time was named Erica. (I believe this was her name, if memory serves, but it really doesn't matter.) He tended to call her, for no particular reason, instead, by Veronica. 'Veronica' became 'Sophronica' for purely whimsical and aurally pleasing reasons. The 'Virgil' is, indeed, the ancient Roman poet. Any connection between Sophronica and Virgil was apparently nonexistent. It's just two names that Milcho liked juxtaposing.

Milcho Leviev is definitely one of today’s Jazz geniuses. (Don Ellis, 1974)
(Richard Schuberth)

Among the group of composers who made the popular music of the 20th century an art form, shine with the brightest light the names of G. Gershwin, D. Ellington and C. Porter. Their work, covering all music forms-from songs, instrumental pieces, musicals, symphony poems and operas, is classical in the true meaning of this word. Gershwin's Porgy and Bess, An Ameican in Paris and Rhapsody in Blue, Ellington's Orchestral Suites and Sacred Concerts, Porter's Kiss Me Kate and Arouns the World in 80 Days are milestones in the 20th century and not only. The pieces included in tonight's tribute are just a spec in the huge work of these three giants.

Τα έργα Porgy and Bess, An American in Paris και Rhapsody in Blue του Gershwin, Orchestral Suites και Sacred Concerts του Ellington, Kiss me, Kate και Around the World in 80 Days του Porter αποτελούν σημαντικό λίθο για την τέχνη της μουσικής στον 20ό αιώνα και όχι μόνο.
