  • Metropolis 1927 - Peter Graham

    16:10

The Black Dyke Band perform Metropolis 1927 by Peter Graham at the New York Staff Band's 129th annual festival held on March 19, 2016 at the Centennial Memorial Temple in New York City.

Fritz Lang's 1927 science fiction epic Metropolis is considered to be a masterpiece of cinematic vision and a high point of German Expressionist filmmaking.
Set in a future dystopian world the film introduces the viewer to two contrasting communities living in the vast city of Metropolis. Those
above ground live a life of privilege and pleasure serviced by the underground-dwelling drone workers whose role is to maintain and operate the banks of machines which provide the city's power.
Lang's film, which can be considered a type of 20th century morality play, draws upon a range of themes and influences from Marxist ideals and social satire to overt religious symbolism.
The music does not attempt to precise the plot, such as it is, but simply reflects my musical responses to Lang's noirish visual style and set designs – the brooding machine rooms, the decadent nightclubs, the gothic cathedral and so on – paradoxically a world of terrifying beauty.

Metropolis 1927 was commissioned by Bramwell Tovey and The National Youth Brass Band of Great Britain with funds provided by The Arts Council of England. The first performances took place
in the Winter Gardens, Weston-super-Mare on Saturday 19th April and in the Cheltenham Town Hall on Sunday 20th April 2014.
This revised version was premiered by The Black Dyke Band, conductor Nicholas Childs, at the 38th European Brass Band Championships in the Konzerthaus Freiburg, Germany, on Saturday 2 May 2015.

  • Gottfried Huppertz - METROPOLIS Original 1927 Score - Suite

    11:34

Would you have guessed - honestly! - that this is is a film score from the 1920s? Gottfried Huppertz' score, man, it's film music not just on paper: themes, motives, lavish neo-romanticism, on a skill-level and development stage you would only see blossom some mere 20 years later - and some passages are even heralding John Williams signature moves.

»Metropolis« after almost 100 years, is the gift that keeps onn giving, the closer people bring it to its original version.

With this, I choose the Heller recording over the Strobel version simply because it fits my taste better. Both versions are wonderful.

    Lyrics :
    City of white houses :

    Pale landing
    in outer space
    nothing to see
    nothing to hear
Weak landing in an old known place
    dark cloudy sea
    dark cloudy feelings
    but we came back
    In the city of angels
    broken homes everywhere
    animals with no fur
    Uprising so far away
    everyone has turned
to a certain shade of grey
    surrounded
    by cold puppets
    no way to run
out of the circle with no end
    This is not a game
    but we came back
    In the city of angels
    broken homes everywhere
    where nobody can fight
In the city of white houses
    ghosts in the air
    animals with no fur
    And we’re still
    in the air now
    nervous breakdown
    nobody could see it
    In the city of angels
    broken homes everywhere
    where nobody can fight
In the city of white houses
    ghosts in the air

  • The Clash - The Magnificent Seven - Fritz Lang

    4:14

The Magnificent Seven is a song and single by the English punk rock band the Clash. It was the third single from their fourth album Sandinista!. It reached number 34 on the UK Singles Chart.

The song was inspired by old school hip hop acts from New York City, like the Sugarhill Gang and Grandmaster Flash & the Furious Five. Rap was still a new and emerging music genre at the time, and the band, especially Mick Jones, was very impressed with it, so much so that Jones took to carrying a boombox around and got the nickname Whack Attack. The song was recorded in April 1980 at Electric Lady Studios in New York City, built around a funky bass loop played by Norman Watt-Roy of the Blockheads. Joe Strummer wrote the words on the spot, a technique that was also used to create Sandinista!'s other rap track, Lightning Strikes (Not Once But Twice).

The Magnificent Seven represents the first attempt by a rock band to write and perform original rap music, and one of the earliest examples of hip hop records with political and social content. It is the first major white rap record, predating the recording of Blondie's Rapture by six months. Strummer said of the group's encounter with hip-hop:

Metropolis is a 1927 German expressionist science-fiction drama film directed by Fritz Lang. Written by Thea von Harbou, with collaboration from Lang himself, it starred Gustav Fröhlich, Alfred Abel, Rudolf Klein-Rogge and Brigitte Helm. Erich Pommer produced it in the Babelsberg Studios for Universum Film A.G. (Ufa). The silent film is regarded as a pioneering work of the science-fiction genre in movies, being among the first feature-length movies of the genre. Filming took place over 17 months in 1925-26 at a cost of over five million Reichsmarks.

Made in Germany during the Weimar Period, Metropolis is set in a futuristic urban dystopia and follows the attempts of Freder, the wealthy son of the city's master, and Maria, a saintly figure to the workers, to overcome the vast gulf separating the classes of their city, and bring the workers together with Joh Fredersen, the master of the city. The film's message is encompassed in the final inter-title: The Mediator Between the Head and the Hands Must Be the Heart.

Metropolis was met with a mixed reception upon release. Critics found it pictorially beautiful and visually powerful – the film's art direction by Otto Hunte, Erich Kettelhut and Kurt Vollbrecht draws influence from Bauhaus, Cubist and Futurist design, along with touches of the Gothic in the scenes in the catacombs, the cathedral and Rotwang's house – and lauded its complex special effects, but accused its story of naiveté. H. G. Wells described the film as silly, and The Encyclopedia of Science Fiction calls the film's story trite and its politics ludicrously simplistic. The film's alleged Communist message was also criticized.

  • Metropolis 1927 Fritz Lang sub-Español PELÍCULA COMPLETA

    1:19:16

  • Pat Benatar - Heres My Heart - Metropolis - Film Version

    2:06

In the Italian site dedicated to Pat Benatar I couldnt leave out a space about Heres My Heart, the song from the motion picture soundtrack Metropolis(1984), fruit of the Italian Giorgio Moroder inspiration and the incomparabile Pat vocal beauty.
The Moroder virtuousness develops at an early stage inside a family of artists in the North of Italy, at Ortisei, in the mountainous Gardena Valley. His creativity ranges from the planning of neon works to the elaboration of sports car, but with his musical experimantations Moroder will reach the world-wide renown.
Precursor in the use of synthesizers Giorgio tenaciously undertook in the seventies to explore new rhythms and sounds, research that will culminate with the creation of the Donna Summer phenomenon. In 1984 Moroder worked on the restoration of Metropolis, a famous silent film released in 1927.
The new version of Metropolis was coloured, worked out again with 24 pictures in a second and above all was enriched with a modern rock soundtrack. The innovations produced an harsh dibate that bore in the same measure adverse and favourable criticism. The Moroder version of Metropolis had anyway the merit to take again to public life a masterpiece of the German expressionism, regarded as the best creation of the director Fritz Lang.
The German expressionist cinema was born in the twenties with the use of a stylized set and a recitation made by jerkily and unnatural movements. Metropolis is the most famous kolossal of the silent cinema, with the use of more than 35000 figurants, and that needed a 19 months filming in the Staakan Studio of the UFA, the most prestigious motion-picture industry at that time, in Neubalbelsberg, near Berlin.
In the first night in New York City more than 10000 tickets were sold. The original film of a 3 hours and 20 minutes length got lost to a great extent. Besides the Moroder version (80 minutes) there is an other restored by Enno Patalas (147 minutes) and a last one revised by Kevin Saunders Hayes in 1997.
Technically the movie made use of filming systems astonishing for that time: for example the stop-motion animation for the realization of special effects, technique that was in use until the birth of the computer graphics. The Memory of the World Register, arisen under the aegis of the UNESCO in 1992 to safeguard the most remarkable works of Humanity, numbers Metropolis as first between the movies included for the technical and cultural value.
Heres My Heart appears several times in the Moroder movie. The short video presented in this page represents one of the most touching scene, that shows the fatal meeting between Joh, son of the multi-millionaire Freder, dominator of the superindustrialized Metropolis city, and Maria who lives in the underground city with thousands of people held in thraldom.
The Pat Benatar voice is the perfect finishing touch of this scene, a perfect junction between ancients and modernity.
