  • VIOLIN CONCERTO by Maya Badian

    19:49

Concerto for Violin and Orchestra, composed by Maya Badian in 1977, was commissioned to her by the French virtuoso Jean-Jacques Kantorow. This opus encompasses 3 movements:
[1] Prelude (6:45); [2] Fugue (7:29) [3] Sonata (5:13), blending unusual fantasia-like cadenzas with a fugue, and ending with a contemporary sonata finale. The result is a virtuoso concerto for the solo violinist with fascinating orchestral components.

Maria Livia Sao Marcos Fisch (1938-), a Brazilian virtuoso guitarist now living in Switzerland, commissioned to Maya Badian to compose this concerto and Maya’s concerto was very much appraised.
    Movements: [1] Moto perpetuo (4:33); [2] Aria (5:13); [3] Marcia e Toccata (5:14)
The individual character of each of the three contrasting movements of Maya Badian’s Guitar Concerto is clearly suggested by each movement’s title.

    15:06

MultiMusic Canada, A Legacy for the New Millennium by Maya Badian
With MultiMusic Canada I wished to crystallize the amazing “cornucopia” of sung expressions that we share now and here, in Canada.
    MODULES: [1] Genesis (4:26); [2] Indigenos (0:54); [3] Francophonos (1:26);
    [4] Anglophonos (1:19); [5] Canada Today ((4:39); [6] New Millennium Celebrations (2:18)

MAYA BADIAN''s DESCRIPTION OF THE WORK:
This historical fresco of sounds reflects a synthesis of recollections of Past Millennium with a vision of the sonorities of the New Millennium.
    The fresco embodies 6 modules:
    I. GENESIS remarks on the space of Canada before the coming of Europeans.
II. INDIGENOS transposes the listeners back to the roots of Canada’s inhabitants
III. FRANCOPHONOS, suggests musical structures of French Canadians’ songs
IV. ANGLOPHONOS is based on the well-known song, Southern Cross, of English folk origin V. CANADA ALTOGETHER celebrates Canada’s rich and unique multiculturalism
VI. CELEBRATION, inspired by Calixa Lavallée’s O Canada, concludes this Fresco.

  • FLUTE SOLO: ECHOES by Maya Badian

    5:41

The music score of Echoes for flute solo can be followed during the audition.
During the audition, a succinct analysis is also included.
ECHOES for Flute Solo is part of an open cycle of compositions that I dedicate to solo instruments exploring, at different levels, the idiomatic writing - technical and expressive possibilities - of the instrument, along with the relationship between the sound as a natural, physic element and its metamorphosis into the arts of sounds, the musical meaning.
Some idiomatic writings used in this composition are: flutter-tongue, glissando, slap-tongue, and many others, while stimulating the flutist’s creativity!

  • HORN & PERCUSSION: CHAMBER CONCERTO by Maya Badian

    12:35

Movements: I. Prelude - funebre II. Fugue III. Postlude - in the manner of a recitative
CHAMBER CONCERTO for Horn and Percussion by Maya Badian is, in the opinion of professionals, one of the finest achievements of Badian’s first period, and a revolutionary composition in 1976. This composition incorporates a series of accomplishments through experiments and musical technologies: The piece has the character of a conversation between two personalities represented by the Horn and the Percussion. It is scored for horn and 21 percussion instruments (one percussionist). Its triadic structure implies some rhetorical procedures.

ENDLESS ROMANIAN TRACES for Cello and Piano was commissioned to Maya Badian by Julian Armour (in the photo)

  • TOCCATA & PASSACAGLIA for Orchestra by Maya Badian

    11:33

TOCCATA AND PASSACAGLIA for Orchestra presents my homage to two of the major Western musical forms, transmuted in accordance with the requirements of this work.
    Movements: [1] Toccata (5:20); [2] Passacaglia (6:13)
Toccata, the first movement, is based on the first seven overtones from the rising series of the natural resonance on C. These seven overtones, first suggested by percussion instruments, become the rhythmic-dynamic motive, extended over the main of the sound parameters (pitch, duration, dynamics, timbre), generating the entire Toccata.
Passacaglia, the second movement, is based on continuous variations over my original ground bass.

  • SINFONIETTA for Orchestra by Maya Badian

    14:12

    Movements: [1] Grave (9:06); [2] Andante (2:11); [3] Allegro (2:53)
GRAVE, the first movement, is of dramatic character, in polyphonic style. The theme is announced in the low register of the strings, and it progressively encompasses the whole orchestra. Near to the close, a cello cadenza accompanied by the double-bass sustained tones precedes a closing stretto in the strings, marked Allegro assai.
ANDANTE, the second movement, constitutes a lyrical intermezzo, and it is performed by an instrumental quartet (oboe, viola, cello and violin). It leads, without pause, into the final movement:
ALLEGRO ma non troppo, in which the horns introduce the main theme. The mood of this movement is an optimistic one - a march of youthful, in a high spirit.

  • PORTRAIT for Piano by Maya Badian

    7:24

PORTRAIT for piano is one of the many examples of pieces in which I used Pandiatonism, thus producing the illusion of Suspension of Time. Pandiatonic is a technique of using the diatonic - as opposed to the chromatic - scale without the limitations of functional tonality. This composition depicts an evocative musical journey in which a range of contemporary techniques are introduced, including such challenges as rapidly performed figures, polychords, cross-over technique, tuplets and, above all, an intimate sense of differentiated dynamic interpretation.

In MOVIMENTO for Woodwind Quintet, a series of sounds is stated at the beginning as a theme and, then, certain motive ideas are extracted from it. The section Meno mosso is an allusion to the chorale-like style. It is based on composer Maya Badian's original theme, presented in a free canon. She stated: I initially use dodecaphonic serial techniques avoiding the rigid application of these approaches, by adapting them in an innovative manner.

    Instrumentation: 2(picc)-2(eng hn)-2(bcl)-2/2-2-0-0/timp/perc/str.

Dr. Maya Badian conceived her own original composition titled, Orchestral Arches, as an uninterrupted one-movement musical flux, consisting of eight inner micro-movements, and thus building a virtual arch of life cycles, each micro-movement holding a specific meaning. Composer Badian intentionally used a unique compositional technique for each of the micro-movements, and the orchestration was done in accordance with this goal. Moreover, upon analysis of the score, one will notice the formation of the graphical arch within many depths and levels.
Premiere Information: 8 July 8 2009, Canadian Composers Reading Session, Ottawa, Ontario
    Conductor: Gary Kulesha

    Short Presentation of the Work:
“I composed Orchestral Arches in the loving memory of my son Mircea, a brilliant percussionist who prematurely and tragically passed away. The idea of composing the work in the format that I did came from a reflection upon Life that my son Mircea Badian remarked when he was merely five years old - on the day when my grandmother died: 'Life is a little bit of Light between two entities of Darkness'. - Mircea Badian (Bucharest, 1967 - Montreal, 1989).
I consider his phrase a sort of premonition, when thinking of his short but intense life. This phrase became the motto for my Orchestral Arches. Since then, I have studied the multiple meanings of the Arch in the structure of our “arch-like” lives; in nature; in arts; in science. M.B.

Text in English published in Achille’s Heel Poems by Ana Blandiana (English translation by Maya Badian)
    Towards the Pinnacle
I miss you, from time to time,
Such as the bird misses the land.
When I feel exhausted from much, too much flight
When my body transforms into thoughts
And I feel I am rising Towards the Pinnacle,
Only the memory of the substance remains
Then, I return home to breathe
And to be born over again
    I fall
    Nearly defeated
Tired I descend towards the land
As giant birds from time to time
    Return to slumber on Earth.

Text in Romanian Din când în când published in Călcâiul vulnerabil by Ana Blandiana
    Din când în când
Mi-e dor din când în când de voi
    Ca unei păsări de pământ.
Când obosesc de prea mult zbor,
Când carnea mi se trage’n gânduri
Și simt că sui înspre înalt,
    Doar amintirea unui trup
    Vin să mă odihnesc acasă
Și să mă nasc mereu din nou
    Mă prăbușesc
    Aproape înfrânt
    Cobor epuizat spre oameni
Cum păsări mari din când în când
    Se-ntorc să doarmă pe Pământ.

  • CONCERTO GROSSO for Timpani, Obbligato Trumpet and String Orchestra by MAYA BADIAN

    15:08

Maya Badian's CONCERTO GROSSO for Timpani, Obbligato Trumpet and String Orchestra
    Timpani: ED REIFEL
    Trumpet: MICHAEL FEDYSHYN
    Conductor: ERIC PAETKAU
    Group of 27 CHAMBER ORCHESTRA
Although Maya Badian’s Concerto Grosso for Timpani and Obbligato Trumpet was written in the 1980s, there is a strong connection between this exciting work and the various musical periods of the past 300 years. The name itself, concerto grosso, is an orchestral Baroque form in which a soloist or small group of soloists swap material with the larger group of musicians that surround them. The opening motif of the first movement is also reminiscent of what a 17th or 18th C timpanist would typically do - play two drums tuned to the tonic and dominant of the piece’s key.
But Badian cleverly views the movement’s baroque and classical themes through a modern lens and leads us on a journey far beyond those constraints. Having passed through the 17th and 18th centuries, the second movement puts us in the heart of the Romantic period. The lush, strings-only main theme accompanied by its lyrical counterparts speaks to the 19th C sensibility of intertwining long, emotionally charged lines to produce a warm, rich but tender texture. The soloist takes a backseat here by subtly enhancing the texture with a quiet tremolo that enters only half way through. The third movement blasts into the 20th C with a highly charged dance-infused theme that leaves us breathless. Combine that with modern timpani techniques such as pedalling, string glissandi and col legno, and a soaring trumpet solo that hints of Latin influence, and we have a finish to a concerto that spans at least 300 years of music and all of its fascinating styles.
“Maya, it was a great pleasure performing your concerto grosso. Ed and I both dived into the work and felt a real connection to it and what you had to say - a wonderful piece that crosses so many musical styles but still retains a distinct 'Badian' sound and feel. Thank you for it! We're both so glad you enjoyed the performance.”
This video is from the performance of February 7, 2014 - Toronto, Canada with ERIC PAETKAU, conductor, ED REIFEL, timpani, MICHAEL FEDYSHYN, trumpet, and group of 27 CHAMBER ORCHESTRA.

The music score can be followed during the audition.
MONODY for Oboe Solo applies an idiomatic writing for the oboe.
When I compose, I try to identify myself with the instrument for which I write. Even if at first sight composing for a solo instrument appears easier, it is actually more difficult than to compose for orchestral ensembles.
The composer has to apply parameters generally attributed to an ensemble or to a large orchestra (melody, harmony, polyphony, rhythm, register and other musical parameters) to the single instrument at the composer’s disposal. I also take into consideration the evolution of instruments and their techniques: A lot of features impossible to be performed some decades ago are easily accomplished today! - - Dr. Maya Badian.

Movements: I.- CANTANDO II. - GIOCOSO III. - DOLENTE IV. - DANZA
SUITE ON ROMANIAN THEMES for Marimba, Vibraphone and Piano was commissioned to Maya Badian by the virtuoso Montreal-based percussionist Marie-Josée Simard.
Each of the four movements is generated by a different Romanian folklore tune. The composition is based on harmonic, polyphonic, or heterophonic textures, in accordance to the music's requirements; in addition, specific modes and rhythms introduce the listener into a typical Romanian atmosphere.
Idiomatic writing for each instrument is evident throughout the piece.

Bruno Bjelinski (born Bruno Weiss; 1 November 1909 – 3 September 1992) was one of a most influential Croatian composers in the 20th century. He was extremely prolific as a composer.
Bjelinski was born in Trieste into a Jewish family. His mother died verly early in his life so his father brought him to Zagreb where he was nurtured by his grandmother. In his youth he played violin and piano. Later he changed his surname from Weiss to Bjelinski (derivation of the word bijeli, meaning white in Croatian language). He doctored in law at the University of Zagreb and later studied music at the Zagreb Academy of Music under Blagoje Bersa and Franjo Dugan. Bjelinski started composing in the 1930s. By the beginning of World War II hehad finished his 2 sonatas for violin and piano, 3 piano suites and a toccata. During World War II he was sent to a concentration camp, but in 1943, with the help of a friend, he escaped and joined the Partisans on the island of Korčula. At the end of the war he lived alternately on island Vis and in the Italian city of Bari. He taught at the Academy from 1945 to 1977. In the late 1950s he married young and perspective pianist Ljerka Pleslić (b. 1938) with whom he had two sons, Dean and Alan Bjelinski. The younger son Alan later became composer and conductor. Bjelinski died on 3 September 1992 on the island Silba where he was buried.

Bjelinski's music is described as being direct and optimistic, his fresh style lending itself to both serious music and music for children. Bjelinski composed six operas, three ballets, 15 symphonies, 2 cello concertos, a cantata, piano music, songs, chamber music, and concertos for piano, violin, viola, bassoon, flute, and piano duo.

    PROGRAM NOTE

“Radio City: Symphonic Fantasy on Arturo Toscanini and the NBC Symphony Orchestra” (2011) for orchestra was commissioned by MITO Settembre Musica International Festival of Music, Enzo Restagno, Artistic Director, in celebration of the 150th anniversary of the Unification of Italy. My composition is a musical fantasy on Arturo Toscanini, who conducted the NBC Symphony Orchestra in radio broadcasts at Rockefeller Center in New York City from 1937 to 1954.

Born in Parma, Italy, Toscanini (1867-1957) was internationally recognized as the most gifted conductor of his time, famous for his definitive interpretation of operatic and symphonic repertoire. At the height of his career, Toscanini was forced into exile for his refusal to become part of Mussolini’s Fascist regime. Like the aging magician Prospero, exiled from Milan to an island in Shakespeare’s The Tempest, the seventy-year-old Toscanini sailed across the Atlantic Ocean to the island of Manhattan, and cast a magic spell upon all who heard him conduct. Under his baton the NBC Symphony was heard by millions of listeners, and through his radio broadcasts and recordings, Maestro Toscanini became a household name in America.

Radio City is in three movements:

    I. O BRAVE NEW WORLD
The first movement of Radio City begins with four horns playing a grandiose musical theme, announcing Toscanini’s entry into the “Brave New World” of America. From the NBC studios in Rockefeller Center, otherwise known as “Radio City,” Toscanini conducted Vivaldi to open his first NBC Symphony Orchestra broadcast on Christmas Day in 1937. I create a baroque tapestry of Vivaldi violins and kaleidoscopic orchestral fragments of Verdi’s La forza del destino, accompanied by sleighbells. The music is periodically interrupted by dissonant brass chords, reminiscent of a modern Manhattan. After a slow, bluesy section with clarinets playing in octaves, the first movement builds to a grand, magical ending à la Toscanini.

II. ODE TO THE OLD WORLD
I imagine Toscanini, exiled in America during World War II, standing alone at the top of the Rockefeller Center skyscraper. As he gazes across the spectacular view from the Manhattan skyline to the Atlantic Ocean, he remembers his past life in Italy and wonders when, if ever, he will be able to return to Milan to conduct at La Scala. The music of this movement is melancholy, mysterious, and turbulent. In addition to cloud-like cluster chords echoing in the glockenspiel, vibraphone, marimba, and chimes, we also hear nostalgic string melodies performed con passione, contrasted with rousing orchestral tutti sections marked agitato.

    III. ON THE AIR
In 1939, Life magazine reported that “the world knows Toscanini as a great conductor with a fearful temper, an unfailing memory, and the power to lash orchestras into frenzies of fine playing.” And in 1944, Toscanini conducted Tchaikovksy’s The Tempest: Symphonic Fantasy for a live radio performance with the NBC Symphony Orchestra. Just as Shakespeare’s Prospero calls upon the spirit of Ariel to fly through the air at his command, so also Toscanini commanded the radio waves for his broadcasts “on the air” around the world. In the final movement of Radio City, I have composed music that captures Toscanini’s tempestuous temperament, his musical intensity, and the frenzied tempos of his performances.
