I'm excited to sit down with the incredibly talented Gavin Lurssen and Reuben Cohen from Lurssen Mastering. I've been blessed to work with Lurssen in the past and in my opinion they are doing some of the finest analogue mastering work out there. Their

➡️➡️Get the Focal Trio11 be here:

In today's video we do a studio tour of DMI, talk to people who work there and had a rather lovely time doing so. We were able to have a chat with 3X Grammy-Nominated mixing & Mastering Engineer Luca Pretolesi! he has been in the business for a while now and has worked with the likes of Skrillex, Diplo, Bruno Mars, Snoop Dogg, Steve Aoki, MakJ and more. Born in Genova, Italy, Pretolesi now calls Las Vegas and Studio DMI home.

The newest part of Studio I is the speakers there are Focal Trio11 be's in the left and right corners and it's hard to describe the result of the actual room sound with the Trio11. The Trio11 be has the expensive tone of Hi-Fi speakers that but with precise detail separation between mid-range, upper-midrange and top. - It is so pleasing, Luca works an average of 7-8 hours at 90 dB's and said They are so good!

As you know we have the same Focals and what is interesting is when we flatten out all our speakers so they all have the same response and these Focals always have the smoothest high-end. - there's something about them that allows you to work for long periods of time.

We're living in a world where there isn't a massive budget to mix one song the reality is you might be working on a lot of songs per day!

Mix and Master for the listener - Loudness Normalization with Carlo Libertini - Produce Like A Pro

    18:03

Enter to win 1x Nugen Audio Producer Pack & 3x MasterCheck Pro ($1146 in prizes!) here:

Mix and Master for the listener – Loudness Normalization:
Thanks to digital technology in audio production today, the “volume” of something became more of a choice over the years, and that choice was always more. More low end, more high end, more tracks, more loudness etc. A choice that was all a little to tempting (and easy) to make for kind mix engineers everywhere. Thus, as technology progressed, so did the volume.

People are consuming audio content more and more through online streaming services than ever before. Before I continue, I need to make something clear: “normalizing” is not the same as “loudness normalizing.” Loudness normalization calculates the perceived loudness as well as the peak loudness and calculates an average using these important parameters together. This is often seen as a PLR (peak-to-loudness-ratio) meter in the latest tools available for mixing engineers to utilize today when preparing a mix for streaming.

Read more about loudness normalizing here:

Are mixing monitors different than mastering monitors?

Yes and no. I’ve been to a lot of mastering studios where they have very expensive monitors but they’re also the same very expensive monitors that I’ve seen in some very expensive studios where people mix.

One of the best, most exciting experiences I’ve had mastering was to have Bob Ludwig master The Fray’s second album. I flew out to Portland, Maine and I sat in a room with Bob while he mastered their second record.

We’re here to talk about room acoustics! This is an important subject that I get asked about at least 10 times day!

Every room I’ve been in affects the way I hear my speakers differently. – I have speakers that I’ve been using for 25 years now, so I know how they sound.

However, I could go to a different studio, bring my speakers and they sound different in that room. Not all of us have the time to adjust to those new listening environments.

The reality is every environment affects how we hear our speakers.

Rock Mix Bus Processing with Bob Marlette & Ulrich Wild - Warren Huart: Produce Like A Pro

    10:02

Learn more about rock mix bus processing here:

Mixing through plugins on your master bus is a widely debated topic. There are many approaches and methods but the best part is that there is no one way to go about it.

Both of these mixers are working on songs that have massive drums, distorted heavy guitars and big vocals that are up front in the mix. However, they use completely different approaches on their mix bus, and still achieve stellar results! Bob uses a single limiter on his mix bus, where Ulrich uses EQ, compression, saturation, and limiting.

Infrasonic Sound Studio Tour w/ Pete Lyman & Dave Gardner - Warren Huart: Produce Like A Pro

    34:50

➡️Read more about Infrasonic Sound here:

I had the opportunity to speak with Pete and Dave and tour Infrasonic East after they hosted a post-NAMM party at their studio the night before. I rather selfishly “DJ-ed” some of my favorite records through their system for part of the night and realized just how beautiful their room sounds!

Infrasonic Sound is a mastering studio owned by Pete Lyman and operated by himself and fellow engineer Dave Gardner. The studio first opened its doors in Los Angeles 14 years ago and has recently expanded to a second location in Nashville, where we met with them.

Infrasonic specializes in audio and vinyl mastering. Over the years, Pete has worked with a variety of artists, including Jason Isbell, Weezer, Panic! at the Disco, and Chris Stapleton. The latter’s 2016 release, Traveller, won a Grammy for Best Country Album. Pete also mixed and mastered Jason Isbell’s 2015 record, Something More Than Free, which went on to win a Grammy for Best Americana Album.

Dave Way Interview & Studio Tour Pt. 2 - Warren Huart: Produce Like A Pro

Dave Way Interview & Studio Tour part 2: Q&A, Recording and Music Production, Gear and Guitar Demo.
Grab your Free Producing & Mixing Bundle:

    Hey friends,

This video is the second part of our interview and studio tour with multi-grammy winning producer/mixer Dave Way.

We've received a lot of wonderful comments and questions in the last episode and we're covering them in today's interview:

We talk about drum recording and micing techniques, Dave's favourite vocal recording chain and music production. Dave tears down some of the dogmas about recording and producing of the modern age:

    - Dave's unconventional way of recording vocals to help singers keep pitch more easily & his favourite low budget tube microphone, which only costs $700 and has a 251 top end!
    - How to use microphone bleed creatively to add dimension to your mix.
    - How putting limitations on your recording process can spark your creativity and help you to create better arrangements.
    - Recording drum overheads in mono for extra depth.
    - Mixing and matching different styles of music to create something new and exciting: Giving it a twist is what keeps things moving forward, otherwise we’re all just transcribing.
    - Dave explains his advanced hybrid studio setup & routing system, shows off his favourite pieces of outboard equipment and explains what he likes to use them on: From compressors, preamps, custom guitar amps to clocks and even his process of backing up his audio files and mixes!

As a bonus, we're also trying out several electric guitars of Dave's amazing collection:

    - Gibson ES - 330, which is almost identical to the Epiphone Casino, which was played by John Lennon, George Harrison, and Paul McCartney.
    - A custom Tele which Dave was given by Val McCallum
    - Custom guitar built by Larry Pogreba

I hope you enjoy this interview, lots of gold nuggets in this one!

    Many Thanks,

    Warren

Gain Staging Explained - 3 things you need to know - Warren Huart: Produce Like A Pro

    6:10

Here are 3 things you need to know about gain staging.
    1. You don't have to print hot - 2:08
    2. Don't clip your tracks - 3:05
    3. Keep your faders at unity - 4:16

Gain staging is a very hotly debated topic around the internet!

When getting started in music, gain staging meant something completely differently than it does now. In Ye Olden Days we were concerned with signal to noise ratio and tape hiss. We were always trying to print a signal that was super hot so that we would be well above the noise floor of the console and the tape machine's hiss.

Later, when first switching to digital recording one of the pervasive theories was that you needed to have a hot signal because printing a quiet signal would produce a degradation in what was being recorded and converted into a digital audio file. Whether that is true or not really doesn't matter these days because modern convertors are more than capable of accurately reproducing the source that is being recorded! You also don't need to record a super hot signal, just a clean healthy signal that is above the noise floor! This brings us to our first tip.
