Hi friends, I hope you’re doing marvelously well!

One topic I frequently receive questions and emails about is mastering, especially how you can craft great masters at home using plugins. So today we'll try to shine some light on it for you!

I'm excited to sit down with the incredibly talented Gavin Lurssen and Reuben Cohen from Lurssen Mastering. I've been blessed to work with Lurssen in the past and in my opinion they are doing some of the finest analogue mastering work out there. Their
credit list seems endless and they've won five Grammys!

In this video, they give us a detailed breakdown of their thought process behind mastering and show us the exact workflow and processors they use to craft brilliant analogue masters.

But what's even better: They also show you how you can apply the same principles inside of your DAW using their 'IK Multimedia Lurssen Mastering Console'. This plugin was specifically designed to give you their exact processing and mastering chains, with a sweet sounding, easy-to-use software!

I have to admit I was very impressed by the performance of this plugin. It preserves the integrity of the music while making it louder, fuller and more impactful. Even if you are not planning on using it as your final mastering stage, it’s a great way to get a quick sweet-sounding master to send to your clients or the label.

Infrasonic Sound Studio Tour w/ Pete Lyman & Dave Gardner - Warren Huart: Produce Like A Pro

    34:50

➡️Read more about Infrasonic Sound here:

I had the opportunity to speak with Pete and Dave and tour Infrasonic East after they hosted a post-NAMM party at their studio the night before. I rather selfishly “DJ-ed” some of my favorite records through their system for part of the night and realized just how beautiful their room sounds!

Infrasonic Sound is a mastering studio owned by Pete Lyman and operated by himself and fellow engineer Dave Gardner. The studio first opened its doors in Los Angeles 14 years ago and has recently expanded to a second location in Nashville, where we met with them.

Infrasonic specializes in audio and vinyl mastering. Over the years, Pete has worked with a variety of artists, including Jason Isbell, Weezer, Panic! at the Disco, and Chris Stapleton. The latter’s 2016 release, Traveller, won a Grammy for Best Country Album. Pete also mixed and mastered Jason Isbell’s 2015 record, Something More Than Free, which went on to win a Grammy for Best Americana Album.

Bob Ludwig is an 11-time GRAMMY-winning mastering engineer, as well as the recipient of an incredible 18 TEC Awards for his achievements as an individual and as a business owner.

Bob grew up in a small town in New York where he first started tinkering with tape machines at an early age, making recordings of radio broadcasts. As a young adult he pursued classical musicianship, earning both Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from the Eastman School of Music of the University of Rochester, New York. There, he also participated in the audio department while playing principal trumpet with the Utica Symphony Orchestra.

Bob first got a shot in the recording business after legendary engineer/producer Phil Ramone came to the University of Rochester to teach a summer recording workshop. Bob became Ramone’s de-facto assistant for the course’s duration, namely because of the time he spent in the recording department at the University of Rochester.

J.J. Blair Interview and Studio Tour - Warren Huart

    1:53:09

J.J. and I sat down at Fox Force Five–his studio in the Hollywood Hills–to talk a bit about his career, his approach to recording, and of course, the studio itself!

    Read more here:

Fox Force Five was designed by Bret Thoeny in the mid ’90s–a highly regarded studio architect whose designs include Bob Clearmountain’s Mix This. Funnily enough, when the studio was initially put together, J.J. was somewhat new to the recording world. So, he hired Alan Hershberg as his head engineer to run the studio, who also became his mentor throughout the technical learning process.

Over the years, J.J. has accumulated an extensive collection of vintage microphones, guitars, and outboard gear, which we thoroughly investigate during the tour. J.J. shared with us how he’s humorously been referred to as “the Joe Bonamassa of microphones” for having such an enormous collection! His affinity for them comes from a wise place, though, as he believes the microphone is the most important component of the signal chain. It is, after all, what’s capturing your sound source!

Good for the soul, he says!

Eric has also owned Barefoot Recording in Hollywood since 2000, where he’s worked with a “who’s who” of incredible artists like Queens of the Stone Age, Smash Mouth, Good Charlotte, and Third Eye Blind, among others. In addition to being an amazing producer and engineer, Eric also co-founded UnderTone Audio where he designs professional audio equipment. UTA notably produces the Unfairchild compressor which we discussed at length!

In today's video we do a studio tour of DMI, talk to people who work there and had a rather lovely time doing so. We were able to have a chat with 3X Grammy-Nominated mixing & Mastering Engineer Luca Pretolesi! he has been in the business for a while now and has worked with the likes of Skrillex, Diplo, Bruno Mars, Snoop Dogg, Steve Aoki, MakJ and more. Born in Genova, Italy, Pretolesi now calls Las Vegas and Studio DMI home.

The newest part of Studio I is the speakers there are Focal Trio11 be's in the left and right corners and it's hard to describe the result of the actual room sound with the Trio11. The Trio11 be has the expensive tone of Hi-Fi speakers that but with precise detail separation between mid-range, upper-midrange and top. - It is so pleasing, Luca works an average of 7-8 hours at 90 dB's and said They are so good!

As you know we have the same Focals and what is interesting is when we flatten out all our speakers so they all have the same response and these Focals always have the smoothest high-end. - there's something about them that allows you to work for long periods of time.

We're living in a world where there isn't a massive budget to mix one song the reality is you might be working on a lot of songs per day!

Mix and Master for the listener - Loudness Normalization with Carlo Libertini - Produce Like A Pro

    18:03

Enter to win 1x Nugen Audio Producer Pack & 3x MasterCheck Pro ($1146 in prizes!) here:

Mix and Master for the listener – Loudness Normalization:
Thanks to digital technology in audio production today, the “volume” of something became more of a choice over the years, and that choice was always more. More low end, more high end, more tracks, more loudness etc. A choice that was all a little to tempting (and easy) to make for kind mix engineers everywhere. Thus, as technology progressed, so did the volume.

People are consuming audio content more and more through online streaming services than ever before. Before I continue, I need to make something clear: “normalizing” is not the same as “loudness normalizing.” Loudness normalization calculates the perceived loudness as well as the peak loudness and calculates an average using these important parameters together. This is often seen as a PLR (peak-to-loudness-ratio) meter in the latest tools available for mixing engineers to utilize today when preparing a mix for streaming.

Read more about loudness normalizing here:

There are many approaches and methods but the best part is that there is no one way to go about it. Learn more here:

Some mixers will start by adding plugins to the master so that they hear the effects of their processing chain the entire time they mix. Others will add mix bus processing at the end using small moves to sweeten an already perfected mix.

Mixing Monitors vs. Mastering Monitors | FAQ Friday - Warren Huart: Produce Like A Pro

    27:27

➡️➡️ Want to improve your recording, mixing and production skills? Join Produce Like A Pro Academy TODAY:

Are mixing monitors different than mastering monitors?

Yes and no. I’ve been to a lot of mastering studios where they have very expensive monitors but they’re also the same very expensive monitors that I’ve seen in some very expensive studios where people mix.

One of the best, most exciting experiences I’ve had mastering was to have Bob Ludwig master The Fray’s second album. I flew out to Portland, Maine and I sat in a room with Bob while he mastered their second record.

Foo Fighters - The Colour and the Shape: Inside The Mix with Chris Sheldon | Produce Like A Pro

    44:19

Among Chris Sheldon’s many fantastic mixing credits is The Colour and the Shape by Foo Fighters, which we got to talk about at length! Read more here:

Chris would mix songs as they were being finished, with “Monkey Wrench” being one of the first tracks he did.

The songs which Bradley Cook recorded, “hot off the machine,” were literally sent down the street to Chris at Skip Sailor Studios for mixing!

The process was such that if, at some point, Chris and his team had a suggestion for a song—for instance, additional chorus guitars on “Monkey Wrench”—the tracks would be sent back to Bradley Cook for overdubs, and back once more to Skip Sailor Studios. It was practically an album assembly line!

Chris would mix all day until about 8pm and drop off a finished or nearly finished mix on DAT tape to the band at Grandmaster, where they would continue to record throughout the night. The next morning, he would get a new track to mix—“Everlong,” “My Hero,” or one of the many recognizable songs from the album.

Chris did not use any drum samples while mixing the record!

Mixing on headphones - Warren Huart: Produce Like A Pro

    12:44

➡️➡️Practice your mixing skills on a professionally recorded session and use this song on your resume to attract new clients. Download the free multitracks here:

I know a handful of people that mix on headphones. I have varying degrees of thoughts on that. I get it, some of us are in bedrooms, our parents house, married with kids (not wanting to wake them up at 3AM!) But if you can, try to at least use headphones and small speakers- take frequent breaks, do car tests, and all of the other things that you can do to give yourself a lot of variety of listening experiences.

The thing with headphones that we have to remember is that they’re very fatiguing when you have them strapped to your head. You’ve GOT TO watch the volume. The work that I’m familiar with that has been mixed only entirely on headphones, most of the time.. not all of the time, tends to have a lack of depth. It tends to get very very upfront, really loud, and that happens to me all the time. There seems to be a spacial disconnect.

    Mixing on headphones (FAQ Friday)
We have a lot of great questions this week including:
    • Do you have a service where we can pay for you to critique our mix/production? (of our personal work)
    • What if I don’t have any studios monitors yet….. would you advise me to mix on headphones??
    • Should the drum room be dampened or a wood floor?
    • What is the workflow for broadcasting live on Youtube?
    • Is your gear (or most of it) turned on all day so that it’s ready to go?

    Mixing vs Mastering Explained

    11:13

Watch as Weezna talks about the difference between mixing and mastering. Mixing is the process where we take multiple tracks and blend them together to create the sound we want. This is where we use eq, compression, fx on individual tracks to make our completed final mix. Mastering is the very last step where the track it pushed as loud as possible without destroying dynamics. This is also where additional processing to the overall track is made. The overall brightness, low end, punch, and width of the track can be tweaked in mastering.

    Hey friends,

This video is the second part of our interview and studio tour with multi-grammy winning producer/mixer Dave Way.

We've received a lot of wonderful comments and questions in the last episode and we're covering them in today's interview:

We talk about drum recording and micing techniques, Dave's favourite vocal recording chain and music production. Dave tears down some of the dogmas about recording and producing of the modern age:

    - Dave's unconventional way of recording vocals to help singers keep pitch more easily & his favourite low budget tube microphone, which only costs $700 and has a 251 top end!
    - How to use microphone bleed creatively to add dimension to your mix.
    - How putting limitations on your recording process can spark your creativity and help you to create better arrangements.
    - Recording drum overheads in mono for extra depth.
    - Mixing and matching different styles of music to create something new and exciting: Giving it a twist is what keeps things moving forward, otherwise we’re all just transcribing.
    - Dave explains his advanced hybrid studio setup & routing system, shows off his favourite pieces of outboard equipment and explains what he likes to use them on: From compressors, preamps, custom guitar amps to clocks and even his process of backing up his audio files and mixes!

As a bonus, we're also trying out several electric guitars of Dave's amazing collection:

    - Gibson ES - 330, which is almost identical to the Epiphone Casino, which was played by John Lennon, George Harrison, and Paul McCartney.
    - A custom Tele which Dave was given by Val McCallum
    - Custom guitar built by Larry Pogreba

I hope you enjoy this interview, lots of gold nuggets in this one!

    Many Thanks,

    Warren

Al Schmitt: The Most Successful Engineer of All Time - Warren Huart: Produce Like A Pro

    1:8:42

➡️➡️Get his autobiography The Magic Behind the Music here:

➡️➡️Learn more about Al Schmitt here:

Al Schmitt is a recording engineer and and producer. At 88 years old, with a career spanning 7 decades, Al has won 23 Grammy Awards and recorded/produced over 150 gold and platinum albums. Needless to say, he is the most successful engineer/mixer in history, despite not necessarily being a household name. His legacy has seemingly flown under the radar, despite his name almost certainly being on a record (or several) in your collection.

Schmitt was inducted into the TEC Awards Hall of Fame in 1997; in 2006, he was received the Grammy Trustees Lifetime Achievement Award. In 2014, he received an honorary doctorate from Berklee College of Music. A few years back, in 2015, Schmitt received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, just outside the Capitol Records building which has been his second home since 1976. To date, he is the only recording engineer with a star, recognizing his contributions to the music industry.

With over 1100 credits on Allmusic (Henry Mancini, Steely Dan, Jefferson Airplane, Bob Dylan, George Benson, Toto, Natalie Cole, Quincy Jones, Diana Krall, etc.), much of his success and career sustainability stems from his firm analogue groundings and his talent to adapt new technologies to improve on the old. His sound is famous for being open and clean, allowing the best natural qualities of instruments to shine.

Al Schmitt is nothing short of a living legend and one of the most important figures in recording history.

The Truth About Mixing In The Box - Warren Huart: Produce Like a Pro

    The Truth about Mixing In-The-Box:

Those of you that follow me will know I produce and mix using Pro Tools. Most of the projects I do at my studio are produced and mixed in a hybrid fashion, utilizing some amazing analog outboard equipment and outputting through either my SSL 4000E or 12 Channel CADAC console.

In the last few years I’ve been increasingly mixing in-the-box. This is a trend I’ve been seeing with a lot of great mixers, from Neal Avron and Dave Way to Andrew Scheps.

I spent a day watching him work, choosing instrument/player position in the room, mic selection, mic placement and the many other decisions he made in a quick and focused manner. Not only does he make albums with artists we all admire and who strive to be the best, he enhances their uniqueness. He’s made some of the best sounding albums over the last 20 years.

Darrell Thorp is a producer, mixer, recording engineer, and seven-time Grammy-winner. He's had the opportunity to work with many acclaimed artists throughout his career, including Paul McCartney, Radiohead, Jay-Z, and Foo Fighters, amongst others. In 2013, Darrell served as principle recording engineer on Beck's ninth studio album, Morning Phase, released in February 2014. The record went on to receive three Grammy Awards for Album of the Year, Best Rock Album, and Best Engineered Album.
