Mix and Master for the listener - Loudness Normalization with Carlo Libertini - Produce Like A Pro

    18:03

Enter to win 1x Nugen Audio Producer Pack & 3x MasterCheck Pro ($1146 in prizes!) here:

Mix and Master for the listener – Loudness Normalization:
Thanks to digital technology in audio production today, the “volume” of something became more of a choice over the years, and that choice was always more. More low end, more high end, more tracks, more loudness etc. A choice that was all a little to tempting (and easy) to make for kind mix engineers everywhere. Thus, as technology progressed, so did the volume.

People are consuming audio content more and more through online streaming services than ever before. Before I continue, I need to make something clear: “normalizing” is not the same as “loudness normalizing.” Loudness normalization calculates the perceived loudness as well as the peak loudness and calculates an average using these important parameters together. This is often seen as a PLR (peak-to-loudness-ratio) meter in the latest tools available for mixing engineers to utilize today when preparing a mix for streaming.

Read more about loudness normalizing here:

Hi friends, I hope you’re doing marvelously well!

One topic I frequently receive questions and emails about is mastering, especially how you can craft great masters at home using plugins. So today we'll try to shine some light on it for you!

I'm excited to sit down with the incredibly talented Gavin Lurssen and Reuben Cohen from Lurssen Mastering. I've been blessed to work with Lurssen in the past and in my opinion they are doing some of the finest analogue mastering work out there. Their
credit list seems endless and they've won five Grammys!

In this video, they give us a detailed breakdown of their thought process behind mastering and show us the exact workflow and processors they use to craft brilliant analogue masters.

But what's even better: They also show you how you can apply the same principles inside of your DAW using their 'IK Multimedia Lurssen Mastering Console'. This plugin was specifically designed to give you their exact processing and mastering chains, with a sweet sounding, easy-to-use software!

I have to admit I was very impressed by the performance of this plugin. It preserves the integrity of the music while making it louder, fuller and more impactful. Even if you are not planning on using it as your final mastering stage, it’s a great way to get a quick sweet-sounding master to send to your clients or the label.

Infrasonic Sound Studio Tour w/ Pete Lyman & Dave Gardner - Warren Huart: Produce Like A Pro

➡️Read more about Infrasonic Sound here:

I had the opportunity to speak with Pete and Dave and tour Infrasonic East after they hosted a post-NAMM party at their studio the night before. I rather selfishly “DJ-ed” some of my favorite records through their system for part of the night and realized just how beautiful their room sounds!

Infrasonic Sound is a mastering studio owned by Pete Lyman and operated by himself and fellow engineer Dave Gardner. The studio first opened its doors in Los Angeles 14 years ago and has recently expanded to a second location in Nashville, where we met with them.

Infrasonic specializes in audio and vinyl mastering. Over the years, Pete has worked with a variety of artists, including Jason Isbell, Weezer, Panic! at the Disco, and Chris Stapleton. The latter’s 2016 release, Traveller, won a Grammy for Best Country Album. Pete also mixed and mastered Jason Isbell’s 2015 record, Something More Than Free, which went on to win a Grammy for Best Americana Album.

Mixing Monitors vs. Mastering Monitors | FAQ Friday - Warren Huart: Produce Like A Pro

    27:27

➡️➡️ Want to improve your recording, mixing and production skills? Join Produce Like A Pro Academy TODAY:

Are mixing monitors different than mastering monitors?

Yes and no. I’ve been to a lot of mastering studios where they have very expensive monitors but they’re also the same very expensive monitors that I’ve seen in some very expensive studios where people mix.

One of the best, most exciting experiences I’ve had mastering was to have Bob Ludwig master The Fray’s second album. I flew out to Portland, Maine and I sat in a room with Bob while he mastered their second record.

    Mixing vs Mastering Explained

    11:13

Watch as Weezna talks about the difference between mixing and mastering. Mixing is the process where we take multiple tracks and blend them together to create the sound we want. This is where we use eq, compression, fx on individual tracks to make our completed final mix. Mastering is the very last step where the track it pushed as loud as possible without destroying dynamics. This is also where additional processing to the overall track is made. The overall brightness, low end, punch, and width of the track can be tweaked in mastering.

Stem Mastering Part 3: Stem Mastering Applied | Mike Wells

    11:44

Experience ‘Stem Mastering’ in a new way, in this 3-part video series by top LA mastering engineer Mike Wells. Get an insider’s look at a controversial yet powerful way to master music. Mike explains the crucial elements to success and demonstrates how Stem Mastering delivers the maximum sonic impact while retaining the original mix engineer’s intention and the artist’s vision for the music.

Using a real-world example, Mike shows how the effects of hypercompression across a stereo mix can create undesirable artifacts like mid-range frequency buildup, loss of mix detail and uncontrolled emphasis on certain instruments or vocals. With Mike’s Stem Mastering techniques, he teaches you how to avoid these sonic stumbling blocks.

In Part 1 of the video series Wells gives an overview of what 'Stem Mastering' is and why you would use it. Part 2 details the process of getting files from the mix engineer and preparing them for Stem Mastering - you'll also get Wells' own stereo-file mastering tips and techniques. In part 3 he shows you a step-by-step example of Stem Mastering in action so you can hear how the stereo image is enhanced while the overall level increases dramatically showing off the songs' inner strengths. In his Stem Mastering demo, Mike uses several Dangerous Music products: the 2-BUS+ analog summing mixer, BAX EQ, COMPRESSOR and CONVERT-8 DACs to achieve a superior master for the rock band Hard Youth.

A popular saying in the stereo mastering world is that you've got to give something to get something, says Mike. “Those tradeoffs are loss of transient detail, loss of punch, shifting instrument positions, and frequency buildup—what do you get for losing all that? Loudness. With stem mastering we are presented with an opportunity to add EQ, limiting and compression without those tradeoffs.”

Mike Wells began mastering in the late 90's, opening Mike Wells Mastering in San Francisco, CA in early 2001. After a decade of service in the Bay Area, Mike Wells Mastering relocated to the epicenter of the music industry, Los Angeles - CA. His Recording Artist roster includes Green Day, Prince, Tony Sly, Tommy Guerrero, along with Production Music companies Google, Apple, Megatrax Production Music, and Angry Mob Music.

Mike has served on the Board of Governors for the NARAS (Grammy) association, President of the Los Angeles Audio Engineering Society (AES) chapter, and Chairman of many AES Convention divisions.

Rock Mix Bus Processing with Bob Marlette & Ulrich Wild - Warren Huart: Produce Like A Pro

    10:02

Learn more about rock mix bus processing here:

Mixing through plugins on your master bus is a widely debated topic. There are many approaches and methods but the best part is that there is no one way to go about it.

Both of these mixers are working on songs that have massive drums, distorted heavy guitars and big vocals that are up front in the mix. However, they use completely different approaches on their mix bus, and still achieve stellar results! Bob uses a single limiter on his mix bus, where Ulrich uses EQ, compression, saturation, and limiting.

L C R Panning & Mixing in Mono - Warren Huart: Produce Like A Pro

Get Mixing EQ & Compression with Phil Allen here:

The song featured in this video is ‘My Final Hour’ by Snakebite.

✅ You can mix this song yourself if you get the Mixing Rock with Ulrich Wild course:

I often think about a conversation I had with David Foster, who I recently had the pleasure of working with on a Diane Warren song- he talked about walking around a Mall and going in and out of stores.

    What do you hear?

    Predominantly Vocals and Drums.

This goes to show that in any mix the centre, the area unaffected by stereo imaging, is THE most important part of our mix!

While most Mixers don’t mix in Mono, they do very often check in Mono.

Understanding the basic concepts of LCR is a great tool to add to your mixing arsenal!

Most professional mixers have a great understanding of what EQ points work to help support the sides and the centre.

“If you don’t understand the concepts of EQ and Compression at a very bare-bones level, if you’re not making the right moves, throwing an expensive plugin or hardware compressor on it won’t help you at all.” – Phil Allen

Want to learn more about mixing with EQ & Compression?

In the following course, Grammy winning engineer Phil Allen gives you a deep understanding of the most important mixing tools, so you can effectively apply them in mixes.
