Hi friends, I hope you’re doing marvelously well!

One topic I frequently receive questions and emails about is mastering, especially how you can craft great masters at home using plugins. So today we'll try to shine some light on it for you!

I'm excited to sit down with the incredibly talented Gavin Lurssen and Reuben Cohen from Lurssen Mastering. I've been blessed to work with Lurssen in the past and in my opinion they are doing some of the finest analogue mastering work out there. Their
credit list seems endless and they've won five Grammys!

In this video, they give us a detailed breakdown of their thought process behind mastering and show us the exact workflow and processors they use to craft brilliant analogue masters.

But what's even better: They also show you how you can apply the same principles inside of your DAW using their 'IK Multimedia Lurssen Mastering Console'. This plugin was specifically designed to give you their exact processing and mastering chains, with a sweet sounding, easy-to-use software!

I have to admit I was very impressed by the performance of this plugin. It preserves the integrity of the music while making it louder, fuller and more impactful. Even if you are not planning on using it as your final mastering stage, it’s a great way to get a quick sweet-sounding master to send to your clients or the label.

I'm excited to hear what you think!

Please leave a bunch of comments and questions below the video and download the demo ( of the plugin
to try it out on your own music!

Have a marvellous time recording, mixing and mastering,

    Warren

In this video, Berklee Online instructor Jonathan Wyner walks us through his mastering signal chain. He starts by explaining the limiter, and why it isn’t placed first in the signal chain, but it is often the first thing you should pay attention to. He continues by describing the function of other tool in Ozone, such as the Equalizer, the Compressor or Dynamics control, and the Post EQ. Of course, there are other effects one may choose to use in mastering a project, but these are the essential elements.

    About Jonathan Wyner:
Jonathan Wyner is an associate professor in the Music Production and Engineering department at Berklee College of Music and owner of M Works Mastering Studios in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Throughout his career, he has worked with artists both well-known and more esoteric, including James Taylor, David Bowie, Aerosmith, Kiri Te Kanawa, Pink Floyd, Cream, Richard Stoltzman, Miles Davis, Nirvana, Aimee Mann, Juliana Hatfield, Tiny Tim, Snakefinger, John Cage, and Rahsaan Roland Kirk. Wyner mastered the first interactive CD game (“Play It by Ear”), the first recorded opera (“Madame Butterfly,” recorded in 1912 by the BBC), and what’s believed to be the longest CD (80:32 for Razormaid Records). He holds a bachelor’s degree in French horn and composition from Vassar College.

In this video, Berklee Online instructor Jonathan Wyner unpacks the mastering room. He talks about the most important aspects of your mastering studio, including the monitors, the digital-to-analog converter, and the monitor controller. He compares the mastering environment to olympic athletics: they only perform at a high level if their input (training, diet, etc.) is good. Assuming your ears and brain are trained properly, the quality of your mastering product depends on the quality of your mastering studio.

Bob Ludwig is an 11-time GRAMMY-winning mastering engineer, as well as the recipient of an incredible 18 TEC Awards for his achievements as an individual and as a business owner.

Bob grew up in a small town in New York where he first started tinkering with tape machines at an early age, making recordings of radio broadcasts. As a young adult he pursued classical musicianship, earning both Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from the Eastman School of Music of the University of Rochester, New York. There, he also participated in the audio department while playing principal trumpet with the Utica Symphony Orchestra.

Bob first got a shot in the recording business after legendary engineer/producer Phil Ramone came to the University of Rochester to teach a summer recording workshop. Bob became Ramone’s de-facto assistant for the course’s duration, namely because of the time he spent in the recording department at the University of Rochester.
