As the Coronavirus pandemic spread across the world, our manager, Graham Stairs challenged us to adapt our song ‘Come Out and Dance’ from our 1984 album ‘Mystery Walk’ to create a social distancing version called ‘Stay Home and Dance’.

This coincided with Speaker of the United States House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi’s advice during an April 2, 2020 press conference call to reporters that “You can never dance too much, especially when you’re home.”

With a retro dance groove, lyrics both from the original song as well as new verses which recall the cheer up songs of Vera Lynn during World War II, we send ‘Stay Home and Dance’ out to spread a little light and as a heartfelt thank you to all the doctors, nurses, first responders, farmers, truckers, factory and postal workers and the countless others who are keeping it together for all of us.

    Stay safe everyone!

Only You (From the MatM album The World Is A Ball 1986)

Shot on a shoestring budget by Mark and Martha on black and white Super 8 film, and edited by their friend Bob Kennedy, Only You remains their personal favourite from all the MatM videos done in the 80s. At the time, Mark wrote this about making the video:

If nothing else, the late 20th Century can be characterized by its state of perpetual crisis. Every day we view the extraordinary events and images of this ongoing crisis through the window of television. Medical miracles, the clichés of soap opera romance, the aftermath of a terrorist bombing, humans in outer space; these commonplace moments inspired the song Only You. At once a personal and global love song, Only You is a reminder that we are masters of our own destiny. In reflecting our troubled era, the lyrics embrace both human intimacy and the Apocalypse.

After its initial release in March,1987, Only You received considerable critical acclaim, influencing the look of several subsequent television commercials and winning Best Music Video at the 1897 Yorkton Short Film & Video Festival as well as being nominated for Best Video at the Junos Awards the same year.

At the time, Martha said this about where the inspiration for the song came from:

I was driving around in the band van listening to some pop radio station when I heard the DJ introduce the song Brown-Eyed Girl by telling the listeners that when Van Morrison had originally written the song it was titled Brown-Skinned Girl. He had been strongly urged to change it as his record company at the time was worried that the title and interracial theme might offend some people and hurt his chances of having a hit with the record.

I thought this story was so ludicrous until I started thinking about here we were in l984 and not much had changed as music was still segregated into black music stations and white music stations. I remember it was still an issue at that time whether Michael Jackson would be played only on the black stations!
