    ------------------------------------
Mario Lanza was an American tenor, actor and Hollywood film star of the late 1940s and the 1950s.
The title song of his next film, Because You're Mine, was his final million-selling hit song. The song went on to receive an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Song. After recording the soundtrack for his next film, The Student Prince, he embarked upon a protracted battle with Studio Head Dore Schary arising from artistic differences with director Curtis Bernhardt, and was eventually dismissed by MGM.
Lanza was known to be rebellious, tough, and ambitious, and during most of his film career, he suffered from addictions to overeating and alcohol which had a serious effect on his health and his relationships with directors, producers and, occasionally, other cast members. Hollywood columnist Hedda Hopper writes that his smile, which was as big as his voice, was matched with the habits of a tiger cub, impossible to housebreak. She adds that he was the last of the great romantic performers.[5] He made three more films before dying of an apparent pulmonary embolism at the age of 37. At the time of his death in 1959 he was still the most famous tenor in the world. Author Eleonora Kimmel concludes that Lanza blazed like a meteor whose light lasts a brief moment in time.

  • Mario Lanza - Yours Is My Heart Alone - Somewhere in Time

    3:59

Mario Lanza's voice, combined with photos of Christopher Reeve and Jane Seymour from the movie Somewhere in Time, combine to form a lovely musical and visual treat.

Mario Lanza sings Yours is My Heart Alone with incredible beauty and sensitivity. Long may his legacy live through his movies, his many recordings, videos on YouTube and through other media outlets. His voice may never be equaled. Hedda Hopper, well-known gossip columnist, believed that There had never been anyone like Mario, and I doubt whether we shall ever see his like again.

Yours is My Heart Alone (Dein ist mein ganzes Herz) is a show tune from the operetta The Land of Smiles (Das Land des Lächelns - 1929). Franz Lehar wrote the music and the original German lyrics were written by Ludwig Herzer and Fritz Löhner. The English lyrics were written by Harry B. Smith.

    The English lyrics are:

    Yours is my heart alone
And without you life holds no charm
    Yours, every thought I own
Our love the theme of every dream

Love that makes life seem worthwhile
Dwells in your eyes and the spell of your smile
There is no song half so sweet to me
As your voice whispering, I love you, Dear

When far away or near you
In dreams I see and hear you
    And yielding to your fascination
I kneel to you in adoration dear, you alone

My queen shall reign and my heart you enchain
All day I sigh for you and I dream on the night
I live or die for you, my adored vision bright

The above song information was taken from:

The photographs of Mario Lanza were taken from the MGM movie The Great Caruso. The movie is available for purchase from Turner Classic Movies.

The photographs of Christopher Reeve and Jane Seymour were taken from the movie Somewhere in Time. It was directed by Jeannot Szwarc. It is available from MCA Home Video. It is a lovely movie set in 1912 that truly tugs at your heart strings.

  • Mario Lanza- Ill Be Seeing You

    2:54

    Mario Lanza

    (January 31, 1921- October 7, 1959)

I'll Be Seeing You (Fain-Kahal). Recorded for the May 2, 1952, broadcast of The Mario Lanza Show, with studio orchestra conducted by Ray Sinatra.

It seems hard to believe that it has now been almost a half century since Lanza's inimitable voice was silenced at the tragically young age of 38. October 7 marked the 49th year since his passing, and I thought that perhaps a Youtube memorial tribute might be in order.

The song I have selected seems to me somehow appropriate to the occasion: Sammy Fain's 1938 Broadway hit I'll Be Seeing You. Having heard this ballad mauled by countless crooners, I have to say that it was never a favorite of mine...until I heard Lanza's evergreen rendition, which bears the hallmarks of his best work in the popular song genre: loads of romantic feeling, unaffected delivery, scrupulous attention to matters of shading and nuance, exemplary diction, and a wholehearted belief in the music and words. The glorious climactic B-flat at the end of the phrase ...and when the night is new, followed by the soft mezza voce of I'll be looking at the moon, affects me deeply, and I'm sure many listeners will feel the same.

    Danny Boy - (Mario Lanza)

( Lyrics by : Frederic Weatherly / Irish tune by: the Londonderry Air )

Oh Danny boy, the pipes, the pipes are calling
From glen to glen, and down the mountain side
The summer's gone, and all the roses falling
'Tis you, 'tis you must go and I must bide.
But come ye back when summer's in the meadow
Or when the valley's hushed and white with snow
'Tis I'll be here in sunshine or in shadow
Oh Danny boy, oh Danny boy, I love you so.

But when ye come, and all the flowers are dying
If I am dead, as dead I well may be
You'll come and find the place where I am lying
And kneel and say an Ave there for me.
And I shall hear, tho' soft you tread above me
And all my grave will warmer, sweeter be
For ye shall bend and tell me that you love me
And I shall sleep in peace until you come to me.
