  • Maria Callas Live: Bizets Carmen Habanera, Hamburg 1962

    6:22

Callas’s only operatic appearances in Germany were Lucia di Lammermoor, with Karajan conducting, in Berlin in 1955, and La sonnambula in Cologne in 1957, but in both 1959 and 1962 she made concert tours of the country, visiting Hamburg twice. The video recordings of her concerts in the city showcase her in a dazzling variety of Italian and French repertoire for both soprano and mezzo-soprano: three contrasting Verdi roles (Lady Macbeth, Elvira from Ernani and Elisabetta from Don Carlo); Imogene from Bellini’s Il pirata; Giulia from La vestale; Chimène from Massenet’s Le Cid; Verdi’s most explosively dramatic aria for mezzo-soprano – Eboli’s ‘On don fatale’ from Don Carlo; Carmen’s seductive Habanera and Seguédille and, from Rossini’s La Cenerentola, Angelina’s final rondo, which magically combines modest charm and sparkling virtuosity.

Maria Callas (December 2, 1923 – September 16, 1977) was a Greek-American soprano, and one of the most renowned and influential opera singers of the 20th century. Many critics praised her bel canto technique, wide-ranging voice and dramatic interpretations. Her repertoire ranged from classical opera seria to the bel canto operas of Donizetti, Bellini and Rossini and further, to the works of Verdi and Puccini; and, in her early career, to the music dramas of Wagner. Her musical and dramatic talents led to her being hailed as La Divina.

    4:43

    Maria Callas Live:
Maria Callas' final appearance on the operatic stage was in Tosca at Covent Garden's 1965 Royal Gala. For many opera lovers, Maria Callas and Tosca's Vissi d'Arte are inseparable. I lived for art; I lived for love became La Divina's cri de coeur, her swansong, the perfect expression of her own triumphs and tragedies. This unrivaled recording is from that legendary Zeffirelli production in 1964 and is one of just many jewels in the Maria Callas Live edition.

  • Maria Callas sings three phenomenal Flute-like notes up to Eb6 in Leonard Bernstein’s Ornaments

    3:52

Highlighted comments from the commenters below:
-From ghostofyeats: In terms of pure musical thrill, this is my favorite Callas moment. The variation on the last verse with the staccati up to Eb and descent to Ab is magical, but what I love most is actually the part immediately after (at 2:43). Bernstein's tempo is breathtakingly fast, but Callas dispatches the series of turns with arrogant ease. She is the only person who does the 'con gran forza' on the last set of sixteenth notes. It's a pure diva move, but also exactly what Bellini has written into the score. Then, of course, she follows up with a laser-like Eb that bursts out of nowhere. It's one of my favorite moments because it isn't an interpolation or a cadenza, just a superhuman interpretation of Bellini's written notes, that no one else has come even close to. (There is a muffled 1965 version with Sutherland that comes close, but Bonynge's awful conducting elsewhere ruins it.)

    -BZBlaner:
If a vocal ornament could reach diamond status, the ascending staccati to E-flat at 2:18 would be it. I cannot even begin to fathom the amount of voice physiology involved. A true butterfly.
    -tonshaad1230:
They claim 1952 was the year of Callas, same for 1950 Mexico. For me? Anything after '54-''65 is her years. The voice of opera, the complete and outstanding female queen of Opera showed her true colors after losing the weight and it showed in her easy vocalisms. For example, she demonstrates messa di voce and allarrendo on staccato notes! No one has done that and maintained the flow of the melody, with a clear-cut example of legatissimo!
Wondrous examples as usual Lohengrin. I haven't been on commenting on your videos but know I am still here, lurking to my dear public
    -From Théodore Gavaliatsis:
After the crystal-clear staccato ascending passage she deliciously descends down to lower contralto chest-notes, makes it sound as easy as breathing.
I have to admit this descending variation to the low Aflat is so thrilling and equally beautiful to the perfectly executed ascending staccati cascade. Sutherland also uses this lower variation in the first recording of Sonnambula where she is vocally on fire but I doubt she ever sang it live. It sounds like the badge of honor of a true Assoluta.

    E strano! E strano!...Ah, fors'è lui che l'anima...Follie! Follie!...Sempre libera
    Alfredo - Francesco Albanese
Orchestra sinfonica di Torino della RAI
    Conducted by Gabriele Santini
    1953

    VIOLETTA (sola)
È strano! È strano! In core
    scolpiti ho quegli accenti!
Saria per me sventura un serio amore?
Che risolvi, o turbata anima mia?
    Null'uomo ancora t'accendeva -- O gioia
ch'io non conobbi, esser amata amando!
    E sdegnarla poss'io
per l'aride follie del viver mio?
    Ah, fors'è lui che l'anima
    solinga ne' tumulti
    godea sovente pingere
    de' suoi colori occulti!
    Lui che modesto e vigile
    all'egre soglie ascese,
    e nuova febbre accese,
    destandomi all'amor.
    A quell'amor ch'è palpito
    dell'universo intero,
    misterioso, altero,
    croce e delizia al cor!
Follie! follie! Delirio vano è questo!
    Povera donna, sola,
    abbandonata in questo
    popoloso deserto
    che appellano Parigi.
    Che spero or più?
    Che far degg'io? Gioire,
    di voluttà ne' vortici perir.
    Gioir, gioir!
    Sempre libera degg'io
    folleggiare di gioia in gioia,
vo' che scorra il viver mio
    pei sentieri del piacer.
Nasca il giorno, o il giorno muoia,
    sempre lieta ne' ritrovi,
    a diletti sempre nuovi
    dee volare il mio pensier.
    ALFREDO (sotto al balcone)
    Amore, amor è palpito...
    VIOLETTA
    Oh!
    ALFREDO
    ...dell'universo intero --
    VIOLETTA
    Oh amore.
    ALFREDO
    Misterioso, misterioso, altero,
    croce, croce e delizia,
croce e delizia, delizia al cor.
    VIOLETTA
Follie! follie! Ah sì! Gioir, gioir!
    Sempre libera degg'io
    folleggiare di gioia in gioia,
vo' che scorra il viver mio
    pei sentieri del piacer.
Nasca il giorno, o il giorno muoia,

  • Maria Callas - La mamma morta

    5:15

La mamma morta (They killed my mother) is an aria from the 1896 opera Andrea Chénier by Umberto Giordano. It is sung by the role of Maddalena di Coigny (soprano). . . This video is best viewed at 720p on a full screen. All lyrics are included in Italian and in English.

A very brief summary of the plot:

The story takes place during the French Revolution. The title of the opera is also the name of the main character, André Chénier, a poet and believer in love and freedom. The story opens at the château de Coigny where Maddalena, a countess, is having a party which Chénier attends. These are the two major roles.

The third major role is Gérard, a servant, who secretly loves Maddalena. Gérard later joins Robespierre's Reign of Terror. Eventually, Chénier and Maddalena fall in love. Gérard, who moves up in the ranks, has Chénier (who opposes the reign of terror) arrested but arranges for Maddalena to be spared. Unfortunately for Gérard, Maddalena chooses to die with Chénier rather than live without him. They are both sent to the guillotine.

The opera is obviously more complicated than this brief synopsis but this is the gist of it. La mamma morta is also sung by Maria Callas in the 1993 movie, Philadelphia with Tom Hanks and Denzel Washington. The scene where Hanks listens to and interprets this aria is phenomenal and contributed to earning him an Oscar for his role in the movie.

    Ebben? Ne andro lontana,
Come va l'eco della pia campana,
    La, fra la neve bianca;
    La, fra le nubi d'ôr;
    Laddove la speranza, la speranza
    E rimpianto, e rimpianto, e dolor!

O della madre mia casa gioconda,
La Wally ne andra da te, da te
Lontana assai, e forse a te,
E forse a te, non farà mai più ritorno,
    Ne piu la rivedrai!
    Mai piu, mai piu!

    Ne andro sola e lontana,
Come l'eco e della pia campana,
    La, fra la neve bianca;
Ne andro, ne andro sola e lontana!
    E fra le nubi d'or!

Well, then? I will go far away,
As far as the echo of the church bell,
    There, through the white snow,
    There, through the golden clouds,
    There, where hope, hope
Is regret, is regret and pain!

Oh, from my mother's happy house,
Wally will go away from you, from you.
    Far enough away, and maybe,
And maybe, she will never return to you.
    You'll never see her again.
    Never again, never again.

I will go alone and far away,
As far as the echo of the church bell,
    There, through the white snow;
I will go, I will go alone and far,
    Among the golden clouds.

  • Maria Callas: Où va la jeune Indoue

    8:04

    Ou va la jeune Indoue,
    Filles des Parias,

    Quand la lune se joue,
    Dans le grand mimosas?
    Elle court sur la mousse
    Et ne se souvient pas

    Que partout on repousse
    L'enfant des parias;
    Le long des lauriers roses,
    Revant de douce choses, Ah!

    Elle passe sans bruit
    Et riant a la nuit.
Labas dans la foret plus sombre,
    Quel est ce voyageur perdu?
    Autour de lui
    Des yeux brillent dans l'ombre,

Il marche encore au hasard, e perdu!
    Les fauves rugissent de joie,
Ils vont se jeter sur leur proie,

    Le jeune fille accourt
    Et brave leur fureurs:

Elle a dans sa main la baguette
ou tinte la clochette des charmeurs!
    enchanter!
    L'etranger la regarde,
    Elle reste eblouie.
Il est plus beau que les Rajahs!
Il rougira, s'il sait qu'il doit
La vie a la fille des Parias.
Mais lui, l'endormant dans un reve,
Jusque dans le ciel il l'enleve,
En lui disant: 'ta place et la!'
    C'etait Vishnu, fils de Brahma!
Depuis ce jour au fond de bois,
    Le voyageur entend parfois
Le bruit leger de la baguette
Ou tinte la clochette des charmeurs!

Where goes the young Indian girl,
    daughter of the pariahs,

    When the moon it plays,
    On the tall mimosa trees?
    She runs over the moss
    And she doesn't remember

    That everywhere is shunned
    The child of the pariahs;
    Past the pink laurels,
    Dreaming of sweet things, Ah!

    She passes without noise
    And smiles(laughs) at the night.
Over there in the forest more dark,
    Who is the traveller, lost?
    All around him
The eyes shine in the shadows,

He wanders on bewildered and lost!
The wild beasts roar with pleasure,
They go to pounce(jump) on their prey,

    The young girl runs up
    And braves their fury:

She has in her hand the wand
Where tinkle the bells of the enchanter!
    The stranger looks at her,
    She stands dazzled.
He is more beautiful than all the Rahjas!
He will blush, if he realizes(knows) that he owes
His life to the daughter of pariahs.
But he, lulling her to sleep in a dream,
    He transports her to heaven,
And telling her: 'your place is there!'
It was Vishnu, son of Brahma!
Since that day in the depths of the forest,
    The traveller may sometimes hear
The faint sound of the wand
Where tinkle the bells of the enchanter!

  • Un bel dì vedremo - Madama Butterfly: Maria Callas - Lyrics

    4:38

    #OperaLifeLyrics

    E come sarà giunto
    che dirà? che dirà?
    Chiamerà Butterfly dalla lontana.
    Io senza dar risposta
    me ne starò nascosta

  • √♥ O Mio Babbino Caro √ Gianni Schicchi & Giacomo Puccini √ Maria Callas √ Lyrics

    2:32

Created by Dimitris Tsaganos - Artist: Maria Callas - Lyrics: Gianni Schicchi - Music: Giacomo Puccini -

O mio babbino caro (Oh My Beloved Father) is a soprano aria from the opera Gianni Schicchi (1918) by Giacomo Puccini to a libretto by Giovacchino Forzano. It is sung by Lauretta after tensions between her father Schicchi and the family of Rinuccio, the boy she loves, have reached a breaking point that threatens to separate her from Rinuccio. It provides an interlude expressing lyrical simplicity and single-hearted love in contrast with the atmosphere of hypocrisy, jealousy, double-dealing, and feuding in the medieval Florence of Puccini's only comedy. It provides the only set-piece in the through-composed opera.

    ______________________________________________________

Maria Callas, Commendatore OMRI (Greek: Μαρία Κάλλας; December 2, 1923 – September 16, 1977), was an American-born Greek soprano and one of the most renowned and influential opera singers of the 20th century. Critics praised her bel canto technique, wide-ranging voice and dramatic gifts.

    ______________________________________________________

Giacomo Puccini (Italian: [ˈdʒaːkomo putˈtʃiːni]; 22 December 1858 – 29 November 1924) was an Italian composer whose operas are among the important operas played as standards.

Puccini has been called the greatest composer of Italian opera after Verdi. While his early work was rooted in traditional late-19th-century romantic Italian opera, he successfully developed his work in the realistic verismo style, of which he became one of the leading exponents.

    ______________________________________________________

Gianni Schicchi (Italian pronunciation: [ˈdʒanni ˈskikki], JAN-nee SKEEK-kee) is a comic opera in one act by Giacomo Puccini to an Italian libretto by Giovacchino Forzano, composed in 1917–18. The libretto is based on an incident mentioned in Dante's Divine Comedy. The work is the third and final part of Puccini's Il trittico (The Triptych)—three one-act operas with contrasting themes, originally written to be presented together. Although it continues to be performed with one or both of the other trittico operas, Gianni Schicchi is now more frequently staged either alone or with short operas by other composers. The aria O mio babbino caro is one of Puccini's best known, and one of the most popular arias in opera.

    O mio babbino caro,
    mi piace, è bello, bello.
    Vo'andare in Porta Rossa
    a comperar l'anello!

    Sì, sì, ci voglio andare!
    e se l'amassi indarno,
    andrei sul Ponte Vecchio,
    ma per buttarmi in Arno!

    Mi struggo e mi tormento!
    O Dio, vorrei morir!
    Babbo, pietà, pietà!
    Babbo, pietà, pietà!
