  • Bobby Darin - Mack the Knife

    3:08

    No copyright intended.

On a personal note, this is the song that made me fall in love with Bobby Darin.

    Lyrics:

    Oh the shark, babe
    Has such teeth, dear
    And it shows them
    Pearly white

    Just a jack knife
    Has old MacHeath, babe
    And it keeps it, uh
    Out of sight

You know when that shark bites
    With its teeth, babe
    Scarlet billows
    Star to spread

    Fancy gloves, though
    Wears old MacHeath babe
    So there's never,
    Never a trace of red

Now on the sidewalk, a-huh, huh
    Ooh, sunny morning, a-huh
    Likes a body
    Just a-oozing life, ekk!

    And someone's sneakin'
    'Round the corner
    Could that someone
    Be Mack the Knife?

    There's a tugboat, huh, huh, a-huh
Down by the river, don'cha know?
    Where a cement bag
    Just a-droopin' on down

    Oh, that cement is just,
It's there for the weight, dear
    Five'll get ya'
Ten ol' Macky's back in town

Did you hear about Louie Miller?
    He disappeared, babe
    After drawin' out
    All his hard earned cash

    And now MacHeath spends
    Just like a sailor
    Could it be our boy's
    Down something rash?

    Ah, Jenny Diver
    Yeah, Suki Tawdry
    Ooh, Miss Lotte Lenya
    And ole' Lucy Brown

    Oh, the line forms
    On the right, babe
    Now that Macky's
    Back in town

    I said Jenny Diver
    Whoa, Suki Tawdry
Look out to Miss Lotte Lenya
    And ole' Lucy Brown

    Oh, the line forms
    On the right, babe
    Now that Macky's
    Back in town

Look out ol' Macky is back!

  • Ella Fitzgerald - Mack The Knife

    4:03

  • Mack the Knife

    2:19

Mack the Knife was described as the most beautiful song ever written by Simon Cowell. Threepenny Opera's Mack the Knife is gorgeously melodic and sentimental. This is meant to be a play on Mack's real state of mind in (a hired murderer anti-hero).

Mack the Knife was transcribed for violin/piano by Jascha Heifetz. This version has some minor changes from the Heifetz original. Played live in January 2013.

  • the platters mack the knife

    2:42

The Platters were one of the most successful vocal groups of the early rock and roll era. Their distinctive sound was a bridge between the pre-rock Tin Pan Alley tradition and the burgeoning new genre. The act went through several personnel changes, with the most successful incarnation comprising lead tenor Tony Williams, David Lynch, Paul Robi, Herb Reed, and Zola Taylor. The group had 40 charting singles on the Billboard Hot 100 chart between 1955 and 1967, including four # 1 hits.

Music Video Released June 21st, 2017 - Jazz in Europe video premiere:

In celebration of the anniversary of Sonny Rollins' legendary album 'Saxophone Colossus' which includes Mack the Knife (Moritat), I'm releasing the music video for my trio's version of Mack The Knife, from my recent debut album 'The Sound of Surprise: Live at The Side Door'! Wait for the key change at the end ;) and scroll down for the full story!

    STORY:
About 3 years ago, noted jazz videographer Bret Primack selected me (then a student at the Jackie McLean Institute of Jazz) as one of 10 winners of the 'Sonny Rollins Meets His Fans' contest. As a winner, I got to video chat with Sonny (

As fate would have it, Sonny and I met in person a year later, as he was given an honorary doctorate from the Hartt School's Jackie McLean Institute (University of Hartford) - the same year I was graduating. Director Javon Jackson arranged for the graduating seniors to meet Sonny afterwards ( ) - an experience I'll never forget!

Fast forward about 6 months to recording my debut album live at The Side Door, I knew I had to record Mack The Knife as a celebration of learning from and meeting with Sonny Rollins; one of my musical heroes. This series of events truly felt like coming 'full circle', as the first jazz album I recall listening to was Sonny Rollins' Tenor Madness, and I formed my trio in 2013 after being inspired by his groundbreaking pianoless trio albums Freedom Suite and Way Out West. Sonny's words in that video were extremely influential - I went from 'searching for my musical voice' to refining what already came naturally to me, and the results of that process (still ongoing) have been life-changing.

Please use headphones for best audio...I have acquired this excellent double bass mainly for studio use. I have not played a DB for about 2 years since i had that disaster where took it out the case at a gig and it was in two halves! so anyway this is my fist hour with it, DB chops are kinda a little uneasy but that will come back so, and this is a good one to get cracking on as its a cool jazz line with many chord changes, jazz rakes ETC. the bass has been set up well with decent strings etc which makes things simpler...As always n bass backing
