  • Carlos Santana, Walter Trout & Mike Zito: One Life Saves Another.. And Another

    13:49

An extraordinary story that everyone should see: Walter Trout, despite critical acclaim for his work as the lead guitarist for John Mayall's Bluesbreakers, was on a self destructive path-- until an encounter with Carlos Santana saved his life. But it didn't stop there.

Walter saw his friend, the talented Blues guitarist Mike Zito, falling victim to the same substance abuse. It was Walter's turn to save a life. And Mike continues to work to help others confront addiction.

This is a story of great personal strength. But more importantly, it beautifully illustrates that by saving one life, one truly can save the world.

Eric Gales & Mike Zito - Thirty Days - (St. Louis) Chuck Berry Tribute

  • Mike Zito - Wee Wee Hours

    5:26

Mike Zito, he may be one of the most praised artists in the contemporary blues arena today, and rightly so, but for Mike Zito, what matters most is maintaining his honesty, authenticity and integrity. These are the qualities that drive Zito's career from the start and continue to define all the efforts he has offered since then. Mike Zito is best known as a blues musician and rightly considering he has released some blues albums. But he also has a rock'n'roll side, and puts it on full display on his new album, titled Rock'n'Roll: A Tribute to Chuck Berry. Chuck Berry, the artist, was a genius. We owe almost everything good from rock and roll to Berry (and his pianist / collaborator, Johnnie Johnson). A tribute to Chuck Berry 'is a pit stop, or a breath-taking break in a career that has earned him critical acclaim as a musician and producer. The album consists of 20 Chuck Berry classics, played by Zito, and an impressive array of 21 guest guitarists, including Joe Bonamassa, Walter Trout, Eric Wales, Robben Ford Music, Richard Fortus, Sonny Landreth-Official, Luther Dickinson, Albert Castiglia and Anders. Osborne and significantly Chuck's grandson Charlie Berry III.Zito says the album originated from his time in St. Louis, Berry's hometown, where he met the drummer and son of Berry. I suspect Zito also hoped to introduce Berry's music to younger fans, who may not be familiar with many of these classic songs. Likewise, Zito features an impressive array of guests throughout the album, using this as an opportunity to promote low profile artists (although there are also big names like Joe Bonamassa and Luther Dickinson who find time to appear in what appears to be thousands albums per year). The album's highlight is Joe Bonamassa's high octane and slow-burning “Wee Wee Hours” that results in unbalanced Bonamassa leadership that leaves no room for doubt. Joe Bonamassa takes the song to a guitar-led call and answer section, before building a huge solo from the start. There is an awkward moment of production when Zito struggles violently to sing the ballad on a complete solo that dominates the track. And that's what works on this album. It is a timeless song, respectfully performed by talented artists. Now think about where we would be without Berry. It's been a long time since Chuck Berry released these songs with some dating back to the 1950s, and in that time recording technology has changed massively so that it immediately affects sound when you compare these versions with the originals. The covers are fantastic - the guitar players involved are extremely talented, so it's no wonder they have great performances here. What song wouldn't have been written without his (and Johnson's) in the first place? Would we have Beatles or Stones without him? This album is most appreciated with the double volume. Don't be surprised if you train a little to sweat out all these old favorites with so many great guitarists. Good music and great intentions contribute to a beautiful tribute. As we sit here in the fall of 2019, some may ask: Does the world really need a new Chuck Berry cover collection? My answer: yes. Seriously. Salute! Salute! Rock and roll!

  • Mike Zito - First Class Life

    4:08
