Michael Coleman at Buddy Guys Legends
4:19
I was just sitting in the front row, at Buddy Guy's, having some fried catfish, a salad, and a brew. I love it there, if you get in pretty early, like 8ish at the latest, you can get a table up front before it fills up. Buddy himself is in there I'd say about 80% of the Sunday nights that I've been there, for at least a little while. He juggles ladies from the front-corner barstool, the one closest to the door, [(How cool is that, in itself? (hotties) and the dude's in his seventies,] and drinks whiskey. Occasionally he climbs on stage impromptu, strips a guitar from someone on stage, and gets his play on for 5 or 20 minutes. If it's much longer than that the bar girls bring the whiskey to the stage, where he sips it and plays on.
It is during those times, and ones like the moment captured here, that allow a man to justify sitting in a dark, (yet, thanks to all the non-smoking government pussies, and non-smoking crybabies) smoke-free, bar from 4pm till 4am, whiling away another freezing Chicago Sunday.
This night, I caught Michael Coleman on tape. And I got caught. But as you can see 2min 36 sec into this video, Michael doesn't seem to mind that I'm recording, in fact, he hams it up for a second there.
He is also selling his CD's by word of mouth at the beginning of the video. I bought one that night, and later after listening to it, bought another on itunes.
So if one person that sees this video goes to itunes, and buys even 1 song, then I guess posting this video was the right thing to do.
Michael Coleman is a local, (Chicago) musician, who that
night showed up dressed like he is in the video, played till he was soaked, then disappeared for an hour, came back all showered and in nightclub attire. To play another set.
If you listen carefully at the very end of this recording, you can hear a bouncer telling me that I'm not allowed to videotape there, and I'm like OK, so needless to say, that is where the video ends. So then he's was looking over my shoulder, breathing down my neck, as I erased all the files on my cam that were vid files, because photographing there is OK, but somehow, due to incomparable, Go-go-Gadget thumb dexterity, I managed to ferret this one into invisibility, while the others flashed repeated before his eyes until he lost interest.
So in the interest of introducing Mr. Coleman to one more potential fan, or dragging one more potential catfish connoisseur to Buddy Guy's Legend's located on or about 9th and Wabash in Chicago's south loop. I post this video.

Michael Coleman - The Trip to Sligo/Tell Her I Am
3:03
Well, this is a pretty lovely medley.
Michael Coleman was born in the townland of Knockgraine, Killavil, Co. Sligo on 31st January, 1891. His father, a small farmer, was James Coleman from Banada in Co. Roscommon, close to the Sligo border. He married Beatrice (Beesey) Gorman, a local woman from Knockgrania where they established their home. James was a well-respected flute player and made the family home a focal point for the abundant musical talent in the locality. So great was the musical activity around the Coleman home that it was often called Jamesy Coleman's Music Hall. Killavil was an area famed for its fiddle tradition, highly developed even in Coleman's very early years.
Michael, the seventh of their children and the survivor of twins, developed a keen interest as a boy, both in step dancing and fiddle playing which was performed almost exclusively at the numerous country house dances in the locality. Surrounded by fiddle players of great skill, musicians who influenced him include Philip O'Beirne, P.J. McDermott and later John O'Dowd. His older brother Jim, must have been a source of influence, for although he was never recorded, he was regarded locally as a master fiddler.
Keen to absorb all the musical variation and style in the area, Michael attended as many house dances as possible and had particular interest in the music of the uileann pipes. One of the pipers he came in contact with was travelling piper Johnny Gorman, from Derrylahan in Co. Mayo. Coleman incorporated some of Gorman's piping techniques into his fiddle playing.
Michael left school in 1908 at the age of 17 years and continued to pursue his love of music. He competed at the Sligo Feis Ceoil in 1909 and again in 1910, and was placed joint third on both occasions. In 1914 Michael went to Manchester to his older brother, Pat but returned home after several months. Then, in October 1914, when he was 23 years of age, he set sail for America with his friend John Hunt, where he was to spend the rest of his life.
After arriving in New York he began work as a performer with Keith Theatres, a travelling vaudeville with venues in many of the major U.S. cities. After a few years he settled in New York, and in 1917, he married Marie Fanning from Co. Monaghan. They had one child Mary (now Mary Hannon).
In 1921 he began his recording career with his first record on the Shannon label and later that year he recorded for the Vocation label. During the 1920's and 1930's Michael made approx. 80 commercial recordings with major recording companies, the last being in 1936. In 1944 a number of recordings were made but these have not been released to date.
Coleman's records were to have a major impact on musicians back in Ireland, and were to exercise an influence on traditional music which was to long outlast his own lifetime. He was certainly the most influential traditional musician of the twentieth century, his legacy extending far beyond his native South Sligo and indeed the country as a whole. Although he has had many imitators, Coleman's combination of superb technical ability and deeply expressive playing has had few, if any equals. On the 4th January 1945 Michael died in Knickerbocker Hospital, Manhattan aged 54 years. He was buried in St. Raymond's Cemetry, The Bronx, New York. (Irish Fiddle)

Mayor Michael B. Coleman collaborated with local youth, Marquis Mitchell and William Pace from the innovative Through Mind's Eyes arts training program to produce Succeed, a music video created to inspire Columbus youth. Through Mind's Eyes generated both the music and lyrics for the song, while Mitchell and Pace both star in the video that features Columbus leaders singing along to the lyrics. Student choirs from Columbus Arts and Technology Academy and The Arts and College Preparatory Academy provided background vocals for the chorus.
Succeed is about showing Columbus kids they can do or be whatever they want in life as long as they continue to pursue their education, said Mayor Michael B. Coleman. I'm proud to have talented young people like Marquis and William making music in Columbus, and I hope everyone gets a chance to enjoy this great song.

That particular quartet recorded, while on tour, a cd for the French label Black and Blue. It features mainly Professor Eddie Lusk and Michael Coleman as lead singers.
Michael Coleman - Lord McDonald, The Ballinasloe Fair
3:15
XR remastered from a Columbia 33237-F pressing. Recorded on December 27, 1927, Coleman is accompanied by Ed Geoghegan (Geoghan as written on the label) on the piano.
Technical Notes: The transfer I had was relatively noisy, but was still in nicer condition than most. The frequency range is quite good for the electric era. However, the recording suffers from the recording engineer being to cautious with the volume levels in the beginning of the side. Either Coleman moved closer towards the microphone at the beginning of the Ballinsaloe Fair, or the recording engineer increased the recording volume. Either way, harmonic distortion is present in the second half of the recording. I hope this extended frequency range does not detract from the qualities of Coleman's playing.

Michael Coleman: The Grand Spey
2:21
This is the first of the final ten studio recordings Coleman ever made. The recordings were made for the Decca World Broadcasting Company in 1944 for radio. The recording medium used was a glass transcription disk. Before remastering, there was plenty of harmonic distortion, tonal imbalance, and other distortions common to 78rpm recordings. The only non-correctable distortion is wow and flutter, which is present in large amounts in this recording. However, through manual pitch correction, I have tried to minimize its effects.

Invisible Guy Trio features:
Ben Goldberg - Clarinet
Hamir Atwal - Drums
Michael Coleman - Piano
These musicians have been playing together for years in a bunch of incredible groups. As a trio they are in strict pursuit of beautiful melody. Michael Coleman says: “I think for each of us, melody comes first. Then there is the importance of breath, and personal expression.” The group’s material includes original compositions by each of the musicians.

Chicago native Michael Coleman, guitarist, singer, and songwriter, was voted one of the top 50 bluesmen in the world by Guitar World magazine. Coleman has released five solo albums to date, and variously worked with James Cotton, Aron Burton, Junior Wells, John Primer and Malik Yusef.
Coleman was born in Chicago, Illinois, United States. He began his musical career at a young age, playing alongside his father, Cleother Baldhead Pete Williams.] As a teenager he played with the Top 40 showband, Midnight Sun, and played the blues with Aron Burton and Johnny Dollar in Chicago's North Side. In 1975 he became a full-time professional musician, and toured Europe with Eddy Clearwater four years later. This led him directly to work for James Cotton, and Coleman remained in his band for a period of almost ten years. Coleman backed Cotton on his Alligator Records album, Live From Chicago Mr Superharp Himself, and in total completed three albums with Cotton.
During the 1980s, Coleman backed Junior Wells, Buster Benton, and Jimmy Dawkins, and also worked with Syl Johnson, before embarking on a solo career in the early 1990s. Coleman formed the Backbreakers as his backing ensemble in 1991.[2]
His debut US release was Do Your Thing!, issued by Delmark Records in 2000. It featured a mixture of material encompassing blues, soul and funk, with cover versions of songs previously recorded by Jimmy Reed, Otis Redding and Isaac Hayes. In 2006, Coleman led a string of Delmark rostered musicians on the Blues Brunch at the Mart album.
Video recorded at the Knuckle Down Saloon in Madison, WI on Feb 14th, 2013.
