  • Michael Coleman - The Trip to Sligo/Tell Her I Am

    3:03

Well, this is a pretty lovely medley.

Michael Coleman was born in the townland of Knockgraine, Killavil, Co. Sligo on 31st January, 1891. His father, a small farmer, was James Coleman from Banada in Co. Roscommon, close to the Sligo border. He married Beatrice (Beesey) Gorman, a local woman from Knockgrania where they established their home. James was a well-respected flute player and made the family home a focal point for the abundant musical talent in the locality. So great was the musical activity around the Coleman home that it was often called Jamesy Coleman's Music Hall. Killavil was an area famed for its fiddle tradition, highly developed even in Coleman's very early years.

Michael, the seventh of their children and the survivor of twins, developed a keen interest as a boy, both in step dancing and fiddle playing which was performed almost exclusively at the numerous country house dances in the locality. Surrounded by fiddle players of great skill, musicians who influenced him include Philip O'Beirne, P.J. McDermott and later John O'Dowd. His older brother Jim, must have been a source of influence, for although he was never recorded, he was regarded locally as a master fiddler.

Keen to absorb all the musical variation and style in the area, Michael attended as many house dances as possible and had particular interest in the music of the uileann pipes. One of the pipers he came in contact with was travelling piper Johnny Gorman, from Derrylahan in Co. Mayo. Coleman incorporated some of Gorman's piping techniques into his fiddle playing.

Michael left school in 1908 at the age of 17 years and continued to pursue his love of music. He competed at the Sligo Feis Ceoil in 1909 and again in 1910, and was placed joint third on both occasions. In 1914 Michael went to Manchester to his older brother, Pat but returned home after several months. Then, in October 1914, when he was 23 years of age, he set sail for America with his friend John Hunt, where he was to spend the rest of his life.

After arriving in New York he began work as a performer with Keith Theatres, a travelling vaudeville with venues in many of the major U.S. cities. After a few years he settled in New York, and in 1917, he married Marie Fanning from Co. Monaghan. They had one child Mary (now Mary Hannon).

In 1921 he began his recording career with his first record on the Shannon label and later that year he recorded for the Vocation label. During the 1920's and 1930's Michael made approx. 80 commercial recordings with major recording companies, the last being in 1936. In 1944 a number of recordings were made but these have not been released to date.

Coleman's records were to have a major impact on musicians back in Ireland, and were to exercise an influence on traditional music which was to long outlast his own lifetime. He was certainly the most influential traditional musician of the twentieth century, his legacy extending far beyond his native South Sligo and indeed the country as a whole. Although he has had many imitators, Coleman's combination of superb technical ability and deeply expressive playing has had few, if any equals. On the 4th January 1945 Michael died in Knickerbocker Hospital, Manhattan aged 54 years. He was buried in St. Raymond's Cemetry, The Bronx, New York. (Irish Fiddle)

Michael Coleman was born in Chicago in 1956. Son of a musician, he took up guitar at an early age and started playing in local blues bands at 14. By the time he was twenty he was playing guitar for well known blues harp player/singer James Cotton (Cotton toured with Howlin' Wolf and Muddy Waters before starting his own band). Michael Coleman also backed Junior Wells, Buster Benton, Jimmy Dawkins and worked with Syl Johnson in the 1980s. He embarked on a solo career in the early 1990s.
His U.S. debut album was Do Your Thing!, issued by Delmark Records in 2000. It featured a mixture of material encompassing blues, soul and funk, with cover versions of songs previously recorded by Jimmy Reed, Otis Redding and Isaac Hayes.

  • T. Michael Coleman Sittin In The Middle

    4:29

I’ve been trying to write a song about my time with Doc and Merle for awhile. It took me years to finish this song because it was so deep inside me I had to wait for it to surface. When recording it took me a few tries because I’d choke up on the last verse and couldn’t go on to finish. I’d sob for awhile and try again. So here ‘tis. 15 years in 3 minutes and a lifetime of feelings in the key of D. I miss my friends. It’s called Sittin’ In The Middle. - T. Michael Colemen #DocWatsonWeek

Bassist and guitarist Thomas Michael Coleman is best known for his many years with Doc Watson and, later, with The Seldom Scene. After playing with Doc and his son Merle between 1974 and 1986, Coleman toured with Doc and David Holt during the last three years of Doc's life. He played with The Seldom Scene from 1986 until 1995. Coleman was scheduled to perform at SMF 2020 alongside guitarists Bryan Sutton and Jack Lawrence. For SMF at Noon30, Coleman performs Sittin' in the Middle, an original composition paying tribute to the time period when he played with Doc and Merle Watson.

THERE IS COMPLETE SILENCE BETWEEN 20:32 - 23:07 due to Copyright issues. Sorry for the inconvenience
Doc Watson has been a lifelong hero of mine since I heard him play Black Mt Rag on the Will The Circle Be Unbroken three LP set by Nitty Gritty Dirt Band .
First time I saw Doc was in Nagoya in November of 1977.
He was there with his son Merle and T Michael Coleman on bass... This was actually the first time I ever saw an iconic American bluegrass/old timey style artist in a live performance and I was pleasantly surprised when I found the actual tape recording we did surreptitiously in our youthful bravery.

XR remastered from a Victor 79322 commercial pressing. Recorded on March 4, 1927, Michael Coleman is accompanied by Edward Lee on the piano.

Notes: This was by far the trickiest recording I have attempted to remaster. I did not have a noise sample, so I had to use alternative noise reduction techniques. Hopefully, this isn't too intrusive. As someone who doesn't know how to properly play the piano, creating the piano reference was particularly troublesome. Interestingly enough, Ed Lee seems to be playing the bass line an octave higher than some of Coleman's other accompanists. Regardless, Coleman's playing and the ambiance of the Camden, New Jersey recording studio shine beautifully throughout the recording.

  • Kevin Burke - A Kerry Reel-Michael Colemans /The Wheels Of The World / Julia Delaney

    4:21

Kevin Burke has been called Ireland's most lyrical fiddler. This, his landmark solo album, along with his association with The Bothy Band and Patrick Street, shows why he is a musician of rare and immense talent. Kevin has always been known for his highly individual style-vibrant, expressive, relaxed, and, at times, humorous. He is joined on this classic album by Paul Brady, Donal Lunny and Jackie Daly among others.

Burke released this solo debut in 1978 while he was still a member of the Bothy Band. Thus when the Bothies split up for good the following year, the shock of the blow was lessened by the knowledge that former members of the band would still make music like this. Burke's unassailable technique and musicality allowed him to introduce modern arrangements and recording techniques to the conservative Irish fiddle world with barely a murmur of protest. Burke's fiddling on If the Cap Fits continues to inspire musicians. Indeed, his versions of dance tunes have become standards in Irish sessions around the world. --Michael Simmons
