  • Farewell, Lou Reed.

This video is a response to:

Sadly, rock legend Lou Reed passed away this past weekend, and while I'm not the type of person to get chocked up over people I didn't know personally, Lou's death caused me to reflect on just how great of an impact his music had on my life.

While I'm not a big fan of the more commercially geared records he dropped throughout the 80s, his early contributions to art and glam rock still stand as great music to this day. His more experimental releases--though not always enjoyable from a traditional perspective--are undoubtedly bold, and the greatness of his work in the Velvet Underground really needs no mention at this point.

What are your thoughts on Lou's recent passing? What did you think of his music over the years? Were you fan? Were you not? What were some of your favorite records of his? Do you think his influence will continue to last into the future?

  • Lou Reed - New Sensations

    5:51

I don't like guilt be it stoned or stupid
drunk and disorderly I ain't no cupid
Two years ago today I was arrested on Christmas Eve

I don't want pain, I want to walk not be carried
I don't want to give it up, I want to stay married
I ain't no dog tied to a parked car

    Ooohhh, new sensations
    Ooohhh, new sensations

    Talkin' 'bout some new sensations
    Talkin' 'bout some new sensations

I want the principles of a timeless muse
I want to eradicate my negative views
And get rid of those people who are always on a down

It's easy enough to tell what is wrong
but that's not what I want to hear all night long
Some people are like human tuinals
    Ooohhh, new sensations
    Ooohhh, ooohhh, new sensations

    Talkin' 'bout some new sensations
    Talkin' a new sensations

I took my GPZ out for a ride
the engine felt good between my thighs
The air felt cool, it was forty degrees outside

I rode to Pennsylvania near the Delaware Gap
sometimes I got lost and had to check the map
I stopped at a roadside diner for a burger and a coke

There were some country folk and some hunters inside
somebody got themselves married and somebody died
I went to the juke box and played a hillbilly song

They was arguing about football as I waved and went outside
and I headed for the mountains feeling warm inside
I love that GPZ so much, you know that I could kiss her

    Ooohhh, new sensations
    Ooohhh, ooohhh, new sensations

    Talkin' 'bout your new sensations
    Talkin' new sensations

    Ooohhh, new sensations
    Ooohhh, new sensations
    Ooohhh, new sensations
    Ooohhh, new sensations

  • 02 Lou Reed berlin live Berlin

    2:34

Lou Reed Berlin Live at St. Anns Warehouse
Berlin: Live At St. Ann's Warehouse is the audio release of Reed's 2006 performances of his classic Berlin album from 1973. Its release coincides with the Weinstein Company's DVD release of the Julian Schnabel film made from these performances, Lou Reed's Berlin. Upon the 1973 release of Berlin, Lou Reed's controversial successor to the wildly popular Transformer, Rolling Stone's Stephen Davis described it as one of certain records so patently offensive that one wishes to take some kind of physical vengeance on the artists that perpetrate them...a distorted and degenerate demimonde of paranoia, schizophrenia, degradation, pill-induced violence and suicide. A earnest pan, yes, but also a fabulous pull quote. Thirty years later, the magazine named it one of the 500 greatest albums of all time. Staging Berlin had been discussed for over 30 years, and in December of 2006 it became a reality, over four days at St. Ann's Warehouse in Brooklyn. It was the first time Reed performed the album live. The New York Times said that Reed wasn't revisiting these songs as oldies or artifacts; he was reinhabiting them...Berlin carried Reed's music to an ornate extreme, but now its trappings are secondary. What comes through is the way it feels. The film Berlin, by acclaimed painter-turned-director Julian Schnabel (Basquiat, Before Night Falls, The Diving Bell & The Butterfly), documents these historic performances. Though the album's harrowing qualities are well documented, the experience of seeing and hearing it brought to life was invigorating. More information about the film can be found at Produced by Bob Ezrin and Hal Willner, and featuring musicians like Fernando Saunders, Antony, Steve Hunter, Rob Wassermann, Rupert Christie and Sharon Jones, a seven piece orchestra (including Eyvind Kang and Jane Scarpantoni), and the Brooklyn Youth Chorus, this recording magnifies the cinematic quality of the original album. It also includes the three encores, Candy Says, Rock Minuet, and Sweet Jane. Berlin remains one of the most alarming and frank highlights of a career marked by innovation and candor. Just as Schnabel's effort is far more ambitious than your average concert film, this release stands as a majestic and poignant re-imagining of one of the 20th century's most powerful works.

We who have so much to you who have so little
to you who don't have anything at all
We who have so much more than any one man does need
and you who don't have anything at all, ah
Does anybody need another million dollar movie
does anybody need another million dollar star
Does anybody need to be told over and over
spitting in the wind comes back at you twice as hard

    strawman, yes

Does anyone really need a billion dollar rocket
does anyone need a 60,000 dollars car
    Does anyone need another president
or the sins of Swaggart parts 6, 7, 8 and 9, ah
Does anyone need yet another politician

Does anybody need another self-righteous rock singer
whose nose he says has led him straight to God
Does anyone need yet another blank skyscraper
if you're like me I'm sure a minor miracle will do
A flaming sword or maybe a gold ark floating up the Hudson
when you spit in the wind it comes right back at you

    Hey Buddies

I've created this Patreon page to help with the production of my guitar tutorial videos. I'm not planning to change what I already do and I will continue to respond to requests regardless of someone being a contributor or not. I have therefore set the patron amount at the lowest level of just $1 for those who wish to show their appreciation and to help with the purchase of strings, picks, music paper, sharpie pens, hard drives and cups of tea.

    Thank you

    Jase

lou reed - new york album LYRICS:

The bias of the father runs on through the son
and leaves him bothered and bewildered
The drugs in his veins only cause him to spit
at the face staring back in the mirror
How can he tell a good act from the bad
he can't even remember his name
How can he do what needs to be done
    when he's a follower not a leader
The sickness of the mother runs on through the girl
    leaving her small and helpless
Liquor flies through her brain with the force of a gun
    leaving her running in circles
How she can tell a good act from the bad
when she's flat on her back in her room
How can she do what needs to be done
    when she's a coward and a bleeder
The man if he marries his child
    and have endless excuses
The woman sadly will do much the same
thinking that it's right and it's proper
Better than their mommy or their daddy did
Better than the childhood they suffered
The truth is they're happier when they're in pain
In fact, that's why they got married
