    Lyrics:

    Still blue
    I'm still blue for you
    I'm still blue
    I'm still blue for you
If I can't have you in my life
I'd always be blue for you
    Still red
My eyes are still red from cryin'
    Still red
My eyes are still red from cryin'
I know you've told me goodbye
But you can't blame a man for tryin'
    Still blue
    I'm still blue for you
    Still blue
    I'm still blue for you
You were walking out the door
My heart is walking out with you

For much too long, the legend of Long John Hunter was largely a local one, limited to the bordertown region between El Paso, Texas and Juarez, Mexico. That's where the guitarist reigned for 13 years (beginning in 1957) at Juarez's infamous Lobby Bar. Its riotous, often brawling clientele included locals, cowboys, soldiers from nearby Fort Bliss, frat boys, and every sort of troublemaking tourist in between. Hunter kept 'em all entertained with his outrageous showmanship and slashing guitar riffs.

The Louisiana native got a late start on his musical career. When he was 22 and toiling away in a Beaumont, Texas box factory, he attended a B.B. King show and was instantly transfixed. The next day, he bought a guitar. A year later, he was starring at the same bar that B.B. had headlined. Hunter's 1954 debut single for Don Robey's Houston-based Duke label, She Used to Be My Woman/Crazy Baby, preceded his move to El Paso in 1957. Along the way, Phillip Walker and Lonnie Brooks both picked up on his licks. But Hunter's recording output was slim -- a few hot but obscure singles waxed from 1961 to 1963 for the tiny Yucca logo out of Alamogordo, New Mexico (standouts include El Paso Rock, Midnight Stroll, and Border Town Blues). Perhaps he was just too busy -- he held court at the Lobby seven nights a week from sundown to sunup.

Photos of Norah Jones, B.B. King, Taj Mahal, Dexter Gordon, Sonny Rollins.

    About the Artist
AUSTIN TEXAS---He's back! Long John Hunter, the bordertown bluesman whose wild and crazy onstage antics during a decade of performing in Juarez made him a Texas-sized legend, has released his first studio recording in five years, One Foot in Texas.

The legendary Long John Hunter, joined by his blues brother Tom Hunter and backed by the Double Trouble rhythm section, made his overdue return to the recording studio one to remember, delivering a dozen first-class examples of veteran blues virtuosity. Brother Tom, an excellent singer/guitarist in his own right, provides some sibling rivalry that elevates Long John's efforts while perfectly recapturing their shared East Texas roots. Longtime Hunter recording collaborator Mark Kaz Kazanoff, leading the Texas Horns, adeptly embellished the brothers' efforts on several tunes and harp hero Gary Primich is featured on another.

The songs are a democratic mix of enlightened updates of early Long John classics, including Midnight Stroll and Hey Mrs. Jones, and Tom's autobiographical tunes, such as the energetic One Foot in Texas title track and the downhome delight Talkin' Country. In addition, the brothers Hunter, relying on nothing more than their guitars and memories, dismiss the band for the extended bonus track Riffing and Reminiscing, a casual, and often humorous eleven-minute exercise in blues story-telling.

One Foot in Texas, recorded in Austin last year, is more than the welcome return of Long John Hunter and an international introduction to Tom Hunter's talents: it's the first blues classic of 2003. The true-to-the-tradition feel, underscored by the hard-earned musical integrity of the Hunter brothers, and the excitement of its inherent entertainment, expressed in sizzling solos, soulful singing and blazing band backing, lift One Foot in Texas to a level of blues brilliance no fan can afford to miss.

Long John Hunter & Tom Blues Man Hunter - Roll Over & Cover My Head

    6:08

A certifiably classic Texas blues album that unleashes the legendary Long John Hunter with an Austin all-star band blazing away behind him. Texas blues legend Long John Hunter's first recording in five years was well worth the wait as it not only marks his return to the studio, but also introduces his younger blues brother Tom, a well-seasoned and satisfying singer and guitarist in his own right, to the blues world. The Double Trouble rhythm section of bassist Tommy Shannon and drummer Chris Layton, ably assisted by keyboardist Nick Connolly and saxman Mark Kaz Kazanoff and his Texas Horns, provide strong, supple and sympathetic musical accompaniment.

Long John Hunter El Paso Rock / Midnight Stroll

    5:06

You cross the border from El Paso to Juarez. It's sometime in the late 1950s or early 1960s. You buy cheap cigarettes, a bottle of tequila, and heaven knows what else. They've got it all! Its a hot night and the crowded streets smell like charred meat and homemade tortillas. You connect the dots, bar to bar, through the old downtown, down slow boulevards and up fast alleys. You round an early morning corner to the faint strains of pepper-hot rhythm and blues. You follow the increasing volume as it summons you down the street and through the swinging doors of a dark crowded nightclub. Its like the cantina in Star Wars. A mix of Juarez locals, soldiers, cowboys, ranchers, drunk El Paso high school kids and frat boys, pimps and prostitutes, drifters, weekenders, rockers, drug dealers, and tourists. The loudest rock'n'roll you've ever heard blows out of the speakers and all the way through you - from your ears down to the wooden floorboards vibrating your boots! A loose showmanly mixed band, black, white, and brown, drunkenly tears through everything from Chuck Berry to Fats Domino to their own improvisations. And, if the bar stools and bottles don't become weapons, if a big knock down / drag out doesn't get the place busted up or shut down, the motley crew on stage will plow through set after set until the trashed streets are bathed in morning light. And, if you hadn't had enough you could come back tomorrow or anytime because this ritual repeated itself from dusk 'til dawn seven nights a week for over a decade. Long John Hunter's band shook Juarez's Lobby Bar almost every night from 1957 - 1970.

Long John Hunter at the Lobby wasn't only an institution and common experience for adventure seekers on both sides of the border but a formative experience for a generation of El Paso's most important rock'n'rollers (Bobby Fuller anybody?). The words, photographs and legends are enough to feed our imaginations, but thankfully the band left a few musical artifacts behind for the future. The best of the recordings not only take us back to this fantastic time and place, but are so immediate, universal, and timeless that they're still stunning to our ears today! El Paso's consistently supreme Yucca label released a couple of Hunter's singles in 1961. He had a comeback in the mid-1980s and these rare singles plus lost recordings were found, compiled, and released over the next three decades. Check out Norton Records' Ooh Wee Pretty Baby! (1999) for the good stuff. Long John Hunter isn't only still alive, but also continues to record and tour deep into the 21st century!

Anyone who's been to my parties over the years is correct in deducting that El Paso Rock is by far my favorite Long John Hunter side. Check out that propulsive pre-funk groove, the syncopated border rhythm chock full o'dynamics, and spine-tingling leads! This one of thee supremely spicy rock'n'roll cuts ever! With extra hot sauce! Also, as a bonus, if you keep this youtube rolling, I've included the muscular blues instrumental Midnight Stroll at the end.

    That's all now hear!

Long John Hunter still makes records and plays live. Here are a few interviews a

    graphics by AVI SPIVAK (

You're listening to my daily addition to the New York Night Train Party Platter playlist. Each track here is recorded directly from the original 45 (no bootlegs, reproductions, etc) to give you an idea of what the real deal authentic vinyl sounds like. COME BACK EVERY DAY FOR A NEW FIX! Because the records pass so quickly at my dance parties, this channel is an attempt to stop and focus on one record at a time in hopes that it'll turn you on to the artists, tracks, labels, etc. I'm just hipping myself to a lot of these records for the first time as well - so you can view this as our journey to learning more about cool old records together! But mostly I hope this music moves you as much as it moves me.

    Get your enjoys,
