Introducing Bowling Green John & Harmonica Phil Wiggins

What is so remarkable about the duo is their intensive commitment to the black Blues and Gospel tradition — without diminishing the quality or spontaneity of their performances.

By hearing John Cerpas with his guitar one quickly gets impressed by the power of his playing. Deeply rooted in the so-called “Piedmont” Blues tradition of the East Coast, ragtime influence and complex rhythms produce a strong emphasis on melody — much in contrast to the harsh Mississippi Blues with its hard beat and drive.

When recording this album Phil Wiggins was 26 years old and despite his young age he already could be rated as one of the top Blues harp players.
Influences include Hammie Nixon, Sonny Boy Williamson, Little Walter and Shakey Hotton. He played alongside Flora Molton, Archie Edwards, Big Chief Ellis, the late Esther Mae “Mother” Scott and John Jackson as well as jamming with such well known Blues veterans as Sunnyland Slim, Johnny Shines and Louisiana Red — shaping his technique to perfection, be it in the Country Blues or with amplified harp in the best Chicago tradition.

Living Country Blues USA is a series of albums on L+R Records. The material was collected by German Blues experts Siegfried A. Christmann and Axel Küstner on an extended trip thru the south of the USA in the fall of 1980, in the form of so-called Field-Recordings — recordings made in the natural surroundings of the artists and not in the studio. Travelling 10.000 miles (16.000 km) by car in 2 1/2 months, they used 180.000 feet (54 km) of tape and took hundreds of photographs to document various aspects of Country Blues, as well as work songs, fife and drum band music, field hollers and rural Gospel music, performed by 35 artists, some of whom appear on record for the first time.

Blues On Highway 61 with James ‘Son’ Thomas, Sam Chatmon, Walter Brown, Joe Cooper, Cleveland Broomman & Eddie Cusie

Feeling lonesome, being down and out, nowhere to go, walking the highway up and down, riding the Greyhound bus, catching a freight train — all central themes in Blues, and the men you can hear on this record have lived the Blues and this was reality to them. The Blues has always been more than just one person’s story, they are reflections and descriptions of a common lifestyle and experience. These artists tell the truth — the truth about being a black man in Mississippi, across the United States.

The artists you can hear on this record all came from the same region of Mississippi. Their communities were centered around 61 Highway and lay only a couple of miles apart.

Many Blues have been made about 61 Highway. Linking rural Louisiana and Mississsippi with northern industrial areas, thousands of blacks have travelled this road in hopes of a better life and future. Walter Brown’s “Keep On Walkin”’ can be seen as a reflection of their sufferings and struggle, the long road America's blacks had to walk since they were first brought to that country as slaves.

  • Introduction To Living Country Blues USA - Various Artists

    1:22:06

From 1960, when the well known British blues researcher Paul Oliver undertook his historic field trip thru the US, up to the early 1970s, Country Blues were still going strong. Exciting artists like Skip James, Son House or Bukka White, all of whom had made great records in the 30s and 40s, were rediscovered, and also important new finds like Fred McDowell, Mance Lipscomb and Robert Pete Williams were made. By the early 1970s general interest in the Blues diminished, and it were only established, mostly modern performers who delivered the message of the Blues. During the past couple of years there has been a strikingly small amount of newly recorded Country Blues issued on record. This is probably partly due to the fact that many people believe that there are hardly any good Country Blues performers around today. It was in 1978, on a 6 months’ Blues trip thru the USA, that I found this assumption to be untrue.
I left for the USA again in June 1980, revisiting musicians I had met in 1978 as well as locating new ones, and making arrangements with them to be recorded. My friend Siegfried A. Christmann arrived in New York 3 months later, bringing with him a complete portable recording unit........[read the full story by purchasing the double vinyl release]

  • Living Country Blues Vol.3 - Flora Molton and the Truth Band

    37:51

CDLR 712928: Living Country Blues USA, Vol.3 — Flora Molton
and the Truth Band from Washington, DC, USA

“That sounds beautiful !” said the black lady, a booking agent, after Flora and her group had played a down-home “Cryin’ Holy Unto The Lord”. The lady had come around to listen to Flora and her band in order to secure some bookings for them.
“Do you know what kind of music you’re playing, other than Gospel ?” she asked. “I'm talking about the style”. Everybody in Flora’s living room hesitated for a moment, trying to phrase a reply. “You’re actually playing Country Gospel Rock ?” “Well,...” Flora seemed puzzled and didn’t really know what to reply. And indeed, it is difficult to determine Flora Molton’s musical categories, and the
release of this, her first album, in a series of “Living Country Blues USA” will probably irritate 100% purists. Flora herself calls it “Spiritual And Truth Music”. All her songs contain a spiritual message, and her repertoire is a unique mixture of traditional songs and those dealing with her own personal experiences. The late Reverend Gary Davis called his music “Holy Blues”, and when I suggested this term to Flora, she did not hesitate to admit that “there is some Blues in it too, because it sounds lonesome”. Mrs. Molton has not sung the “Devil’s music” since she joined the church, but her guitar playing takes us back to the beginning of Country Blues guitar. Her Technique is very limited and only serves as a simple background for her vocals. This effect is reached
by sliding a metal ring across the strings, producing a moaning, whining sound that resembles the human voice. She uses “Open D” (also called “Vastepol”) tuning, and being unable to transpose keys, her music clearly shows its African roots. Her work with bands ranges from a strictly down-home sound to a more sophisticated style (as it can be heard on this album), varying with the line-up of musicians. (These have to be the first recordings of traditional black music featuring a dulcimer).
Life for Flora Molton has been a constant struggle. She was born in Louisa County, Virginia, in 1908. Partially blind from birth, her vision was only slightly improved when, at the age of 8, she had the cataracts removed from her eyes. Her mother played the organ, and Flora began her musical career by playing her father’s instrument, the accordion. Her father was a preacher, and at the age of 17, Flora began preaching herself, and a few more years later she joined the Holiness Church and held mission services in her own home. Flora switched to guitar in 1943, after she had moved to Washington D.C. in the late 1930s. Classified by the government as blind, there was no chance for Flora to get a job that would support her daughter and son. Thus she was forced to secure her living by playing in the streets, and somehow managed
to survive off the tiny offerings that were placed in her tin cup by passers-by.
In the late 1950s, Flora joined a six week training program that promised a job and stable income at its completion, but nothing happened. It was not until 1963 that the situation changed. Ed Morris, a white guitarist and avid Blues‘ and Folk scholar, happened to hear her, understood Flora’s form of expression and began working with her. It was the beginning of the Blues and Folk Revival
and soon appearances at local clubs, coffee houses and festivals followed, and Mrs. Molton became a popular figure among aficionados in the Washington, D.C. area. To give.her music wider exposure, Flora saved a couple of hundred dollars to have two 45s recorded and pressed for her own “Molton’s Records” label (“The Sun Will Shine In Vietnam One Day” / “I Heard It Thru The Truevine” and “ I Can’t Stand It” / “Rejected Stone”). Both discs were meant
for local sales and airplay, but are unobtainable now.
    [...]
After almost 40 years of singing and playing in the streets of America’s capital, Flora Molton has remained relatively unknown.

Big Bill Broonzy (June 26, 1893 – August 14, 1958) was an American blues singer, songwriter and guitarist. His career began in the 1920s, when he played country blues to mostly African-American audiences. Through the 1930s and 1940s he successfully navigated a transition in style to a more urban blues sound popular with working-class African-American audiences. In the 1950s a return to his traditional folk-blues roots made him one of the leading figures of the emerging American folk music revival and an international star. His long and varied career marks him as one of the key figures in the development of blues music in the 20th century. Broonzy copyrighted more than 300 songs during his lifetime, including both adaptations of traditional folk songs and original blues songs. As a blues composer, he was unique in writing songs that reflected his rural-to-urban experiences.

  • Cephas & Wiggins - Walking Mama

    3:18

    Cephas & Wiggins
    From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Cephas & Wiggins was an American acoustic blues duo composed of guitarist John Cephas (September 4, 1930[1] -- March 4, 2009[2]) and harmonica player Phil Wiggins (born May 8, 1954).[3] They were known for traditional blues style known as the Piedmont blues.

Both musicians were born in Washington D.C., although Cephas was older by some 25 years. They first met at a jam session at the Smithsonian's Festival of American Folklife in 1975 or 1976, and played together in Wilbert Big Chief Ellis's band.[4] When Ellis died, they decided to continue as a duo.[5]
In 1980, Cephas & Wiggins were recorded by German archivists Siegfried Christmann and Axel Kustner.[6] These recordings were their first as a duo and they were released the following year on as a part of Living Country Blues USA series on German label L+R.[7]
In 1986, Cephas & Wiggins released Dog Days of August, their first U.S. release on Flying Fish Records. In 1989, Cephas was awarded the National Heritage Fellowship.
Two more albums followed from Flying Fish. After they left the label, they released one album from New York-based Chesky Records, and four from Alligator Records.
Cephas died of natural causes on March 4, 2009. He was 78.[8] The duo had released Richmond Blues on Folkways Records in 2008.
