  • Germany: Swimming pool near Cologne bans male refugees

    2:35

A public swimming pool in Bornheim, western Germany, forbade from Thursday entry to male refugees over eighteen, following at least one incident of alleged sexual harassment by males staying in nearby emergency accommodation.

The ban was imposed by local government authorities following the alleged incident and complaints from a number of residents and swimming pool employees. The incidents were described as
chauvinistic behaviour but not tantamount to criminality.

SOT, Claudia Hoepfner, swimming pool visitor, (in German): For me it is almost impossible to understand because I think that everyone should have the chance to enjoy their free time especially after fleeing their country, where they had problems. If I was one of them I would like to be able to come here and relax, have fun, enjoy and practice my hobbies.

SOT, Visitor (she didn't want to give her name) (in German): If they behave bad then they have to accept the consequences. But I haven't seen anything and I don't know anything [related to it].

SOT, Visitor Bulent Sengulb (in German): I think this is a no go, we cannot tolerate this. One has to deal with it and show them that it doesn't work like this, they have to see immediately that here things don't work like this.

We don't think we are restricted only regionally as USA is trying to describe us. We want to protect our national interest as far as it is needed to protect them. If we are talking about Balkan region then we are not feeling optimistic about militarisation of this region.

SOT, Ivica Dacic, Serbian Foreign Minister (Serbian): I would like to remind you that we are talking long about about uncontrolled increase of arming which affects the balance of the region set even by Dayton agreement

Bulldozers are expected to destroy a large portion of a refugee camp in Calais on Friday, January 15, after police gave refugees and migrants living there the order to move into newly-built housing. More than 1,500 refugees in the camp are refusing to move into the new homes, which are formed from converted shipping containers, because they have reportedly not been consulted on the matter and have been given too little time to make the move.

  • Georgia: Check out this chapel inside a 400-year-old oak tree

    2:27

Churchgoers gathered for a mid-week sermon at the Virgin Mary Chapel in Kutaisi, Wednesday. However this was no ordinary sermon as the chapel is located inside a 400-year-old oak tree at the Kutaisi Botanical Garden.

SOT, Amiran Khvadagiani, director of the Kutaisi Botanical Garden (Georgian): This is the unique centuries-old garden. A few years ago we decided to build a chapel inside this 400-years-old oak tree which had a natural hole in it. You should agree that the chapel inside the living tree is a rarity and I can confirm that there are no analogues in the world. There is, for example, a ten-centuries-old chapel inside Platanus in Greece, there is also one in France, but the first chapel in a living tree exists only in Georgia, in the Kutaisi Botanical Garden.

Secretary General of the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) Jens Stoltenberg met with the Polish President Andrzej Duda at NATO's Headquarters in Brussels, Monday, to discuss Poland's position within NATO, as well as the upcoming Warsaw Summit.

SOT, Andrzej Duda, President of Poland (Polish): Our main topic of the discussions of the most upcoming North Atlantic Organisation summit in Warsaw whose principal objective in my opinion is to strengthen the security both of central Europe and of the southern flank of the continent.

SOT, Andrzej Duda, President of Poland (Polish): We should also at the same time remember that today we shouldn't talk about enemies being anywhere, we have certain problems with the security architecture in our parts of Europe, so that is why we need dialogue. First and foremost I think about the dialogue with Russia. We shouldn't neglect this dialogue but should also conduct this dialogue given the current issues. That includes also the problem of adhering to international law, which is in my opinion the guarantee for global peace.

French President Francois Hollande declared an economic state of emergency before announcing a €2 billion ($2.18 billion) series of measures to cut France's high rate of unemployment, during a speech in Paris, Monday.

SOT, Francois Hollande, President of France (French): We must thus face our responsibilities on this major question. I believe that faced with a global situation of economic uncertainty and persistent unemployment, we must also announce an economic and social state of emergency. This state of emergency implies choices, it concerns firstly government but also those with political responsibility and our social partners. Certainly, three years of preceding efforts have been undertaken. And we see the results - the public deficit has been continuously reduced, corporate margins have been restored to pre-crisis levels, competitiveness has been re-established, and the success of our companies is recognised internationally. Yet at the same time I am disappointed, as growth remains too slow.

  • Ukraine: French delegation in Donetsk call to ‘end the tragedy’ of war after fact-finding mission

    2:35

A delegation of French activists held a press conference with the Foreign Minister of the self-proclaimed Donetsk People’s Republic (DPR/DPR) Alexander Kofman following a fact finding mission in Donetsk on Thursday.

SOT, Jacques Clostermann, Leader of Mon Pays La France party (French): First of all, I would like to give the floor to Mr. Bousquet, because we identified two principal problems which are communication and juridical problems. Mr. Bousquet is a lawyer and was the one to review the dossier, and you confessed in front of the European Commission. We saw that it was that file that was important for the recognition of Donbass. So I will give the floor now to Mr. Bousquet.

SOT, Josy-Jean Bousquet, French lawyer (French): Today, here the results of these deeds which came out, represent the gravity of the situation. For me as a judge, I am in favour of convening certain outcomes above all to the European Court of Justice which could end the tragedy and which may conduct the necessary measures according to the law. I say we will read it out!

SOT, Jacques Clostermann, Leader of Mon Pays La France party (French): We start off again with the image of the people who are in favour of their liberation, people who are breathing. We met those people. We met those people who live under very difficult conditions, we have compassion for them. It was a very sad part of our trip. As indicated, I met a popular French journalist. We also met the person in charge of the university who speaks French, who constitutes a French part of Francophonie here. This is my biggest hope. It is my biggest hope with Donbass and its future. And for me it is a great job.

  • Russia: Putin pledges support to help maintain small businesses

    1:50

Russia: Putin promises to do all efforts in order to maintain the stability of small businesses”

SOT, Vladimir Putin, Russian President (Russian): The last two years were quite difficult for the economy. External complications affected almost every sector but it should be noted that in general business has survived, including small one.

SOT, Vladimir Putin, Russian President (Russian): Certainly, it is necessary to exert all efforts in order to maintain the stability in small business. Temporary budget and economic restrictions must not be a barrier to the inflow of educated, modern-thinking and enterprising people to this sector.

SOT, Vladimir Putin, Russian President (Russian): Together with the regions and regional teams it is necessary to determine spheres where demand for business is the highest, to create social training programs and to achieve concrete results. Only then it will be possible to achieve a qualitative breakthrough.

SOT, Vladimir Putin, Russian President (Russian): I promise you that I will do everything from my side in order both regional and governmental authorities react positively to your proposals and take advantage of them in the economy sphere. We all need success because everything depends on it in country's life including social problems and domestic issues as well as our position on the international arena.
