Ask for money, and get advice
Ask for advice, get money twice
I'm from the dirty but that chico nice
Ya'll call it a moment, I call it life

One day while my light is glowing
I'll be in my castle golden
But until the gates are open

When it comes to tall building design, it’s often the structural system where the most groundbreaking innovations are made. Premiering this week in partnership with the Chicago Architecture Biennial is a new exhibition highlighting the innovative structural systems of an architecture firm that has completed their fair share of tall buildings: SOM.

Titled SOM: Engineering x [Art + Architecture], the exhibition uncovers the concepts and forms of the firm’s greatest achievements, including revolutionary tall buildings such as the John Hancock Building, the Willis Tower and the current world’s tallest building, the Burj Khalifa. The exhibition reveals the research and thought processes through a range of media: hand-drawn sketches, interactive sculpture, immersive video, and most notably, a lineup of models at 1:500 showing the structural skeletons of 30 significant projects.

“An engineer should design a structure that an architect would be ashamed to cover up,” commented SOM partner Bill Baker.

The exhibition also follows the firm’s longstanding tradition of working with visual artists. On display will be models, drawings and other objects created through collaborations with Pablo Picasso, James Turrell, Jaume Plensa, James Carpenter, Janet Echelman, and Iñigo Manglano-Ovall, exploring the idea that “engineers, architects, and artists alike practice a poetry of inquiry, experimentation, and ingenuity.”

The exhibition will be on display through the duration of the Chicago Architecture Biennial, closing on January 7th, 2018.

Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM), in collaboration with Entasis Arkitekter, has released new images of Karlatornet, a 230-meter tower project in Gothenburg, Sweden. Selected by jury in 2014, the tower is scheduled for completion in 2019, and will be Sweden’s tallest building. The project is part of Lindholmen, a new district being built adjacent to the city’s harbor. The full plan – ten blocks of office, retail, and residential space – is slated for completion in 2021, to coincide with Gothenburg’s 400th anniversary.

When announced in 2014, the jury described the intent for the competition as [to] demonstrate how the skyscraper can be integrated into the structure of the neighborhood, adding that the building should be a part of the area’s social and architectural context, not stand as a solitary monolith. Advancing the goals of the competition, Karlatornet will provide a variety of residential arrangements, including those for singles, couples, and large families, as well as social spaces, such as a roof-top terrace, hotel bar, and points of access to the surrounding street life, shops, and restaurants.

The urban plan for the area, being designed by Entasis, was described by the jury in 2014 as safe and well thought-out with interstitial spaces [handling] connections admirably, both north-south and east-west, creating meeting points and spaciousness in a way that encourages outdoor gatherings.

  • Frank Sinatra - New York, New York

    3:28

The City of New York, commonly called New York City and New York, has been the most populous city in the United States since 1790, while the New York metropolitan area ranks among the most populous urban areas in the world. A leading global city located in the state of New York, it exerts a powerful influence over worldwide commerce, finance, culture, fashion and entertainment. As host of United Nations headquarters, New York is also an important center for international affairs.

Many neighborhoods and landmarks in the city have become world-famous. The Statue of Liberty greeted millions of immigrants as they came to America in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Wall Street, in Lower Manhattan, has been a dominant global financial center since World War II and is home to the New York Stock Exchange. The city has been home to several of the tallest buildings in the world, including the Empire State Building and the twin towers of the former World Trade Center.
    Source: Wikipedia

Theme from New York, New York (or New York, New York) is the theme song from the Martin Scorsese film New York, New York (1977), composed by John Kander, with lyrics by Fred Ebb. It was written for and performed in the film by Liza Minnelli. It was suggested to him by Howard Huntridge, an English Television producer, during a meeting at Caesars Palace Las Vegas in 1977. The song has been embraced as a celebration of New York City, and is popular particularly at public social events in the city, lending it a quasi-status as the city's anthem.

In 1979, it was recorded by Frank Sinatra, for his album Trilogy: Past Present Future (1980), and has since become closely associated with him. He occasionally performed it live with Minnelli as a duet. Sinatra recorded it a second time in duet with Tony Bennett for his 1993 album Duets.

The song did not become a popular hit until it was picked up in concert by Frank Sinatra during his performances at Radio City Music Hall in October 1978. Subsequently, Sinatra recorded it in 1979 for his 1980 Trilogy set (Reprise Records), and it became one of his signature songs. The single peaked at #32 in June 1980, becoming his final Top Forty charting hit. Sinatra made two more studio recordings of the song in 1981 (for his NBC TV special The Man and His Music) and 1993 (for Capitol Records). From the latter, an electronic duet with Tony Bennett was produced for Sinatra's Duets album.

The lyrics of the Sinatra versions differ slightly from Ebb's original lyrics. Notably, the phrase A-number-one, which does not appear at all in the original lyrics, is sung twice at the song's rallentando climax. (Ebb has said he didn't even like Sinatra's use of A-number-one).[1] The phrase is both the first and fourth on a list of four superlative titles the singer strives to achieve — A-number-one, top of the list, king of the hill, A-number-one — where Ebb's original lyrics (performed by Minnelli) were king of the hill, head of the list, cream of the crop, at the top of the heap.

Despite Sinatra's version becoming more familiar, original singer Minnelli had two of the tune's most memorable live performances -- during the July 4, 1986 ceremony marking the rededication of the Statue of Liberty after extensive renovations, and in the middle of the seventh inning of a New York Mets game that was the first pro sports event in the metro area after the September 11, 2001 attacks. She also sang it in the Olympic stadium during the 1984 Summer Olympics, accompanied by 24 pianos and strobe lights.

New York City’s latest full-floor luxury apartments are officially for sale in Morris Adjmi Architects’ first ever residential tower, 30 E 31. At 500 feet tall and 40 stories, this building will feature 42 one- and two-bedroom homes with a duplex penthouse—with prices ranging anywhere from $1.65 to $12 mil. Located in Manhattan’s NoMad neighborhood, the building's design draws from its Gothic context. On the facade, 6 columns emphasize the skyscraper's verticality and at the top of the building turn into a diagrid pattern reminiscent of a barrel-vaulted ceiling.

“Our goal with 30 E 31 was to capture the essence of this historic neighborhood reimagined in a contemporary and luxurious 40-story tower,” said Morris Adjmi.

“The combination of the tower’s premier location, Adjmi’s superlative design, our commitment to using only the finest custom materials, and the addition of amenities and services usually reserved for larger scale condominiums makes 30 E 31 a unique opportunity for buyers seeking a luxury boutique building in Manhattan,” said President and CEO of Ekstein Development Group, Erik Ekstein.

30 E 31 will have no shortage of high-end amenities. These amenities include 24-hour concierge, a trendy full-service fitness center, bike storage and a private dining room complete with a catering kitchen. When residents aren’t in their upscale home, they may be sitting next to the double-sided black limestone fireplace in the lounge, or finding inner peace in the viewing garden. When residents want to venture outside they will be walking distance from New York City’s Design District, Morgan Library & Museum, and Madison Square Park.

Construction is scheduled for completion in 2019. For more information see the building's website here.

  • Dr Tony Matthews discusses the problem of urban canyon effect in cities.

    2:23

Dr Tony Matthews shows how the phenomenon known as ‘canyon effect’ is becoming common in cities. It occurs when tall buildings flank both sides of city streets, artificially creating a canyon-like effect. It is associated with negative consequences including changes to temperatures, light levels, wind patterns, air quality and even diminished mental health outcomes. Once established, canyon effect is locked into the urban fabric with implications lasting decades or longer.

They inspired us to create a live, real-time place where we can all relax and hang out with musicians of all types from all over the world. We’re experiencing this pandemic together, after all. Every one of us!

It’s sadly ironic that it took a pandemic to bring us all together, but meeting new friends who also love creating and producing music might be a silver lining :-)

And like TAXI TV and the TAXI Road Rally convention, we want to keep it very supportive and friendly! Trolls will be excommunicated on the spot ;-)

We’ll be joined by some TAXI All-Stars from time to time, as well as some of my music industry friends, so drop by and meet them!

Let’s Turn This into a “Thing”!
    We only ask two things:
    1. Be polite and respectful.

    2. Tell every musician you know about the TAXI Music Quarantini Happy Hour, and here’s why…

Can architecture and design reverse climate change? Architect and founding partner of Stefano Boeri Architetti (SBA), Stefano Boeri believes it can. Boeri’s Vertical Forest, a project which marries the natural and urban spheres through biodiversity and reforestation, has already come to fruition in Milan, is currently under construction in Beijing, and soon to be constructed in Shanghai. (Watch the video to learn more about Boeri’s Vertical Forest projects.)

However, in the event that humanity is not able to reverse climate change, SBA China and Tongji University’s Future City Lab imagines a new Shanghai in the year 2117...on Mars. Their project, “Vertical Forest Seeds on Mars,” will be on display at the SUSAS 2017 exhibition in Minsheng Port in Shanghai.

Their hypothesis begins with “eco-systemic seeds” which would travel via an interplanetary space terminal and take root on Mars to create an atmosphere suitable for plants and human life. With the help of the app Archi Maker, visitors can experience the future green Martian city for themselves.

This cultural festival of urban renewal wouldn’t be possible without approximately 200 notable architects, artists, and curators worldwide. In addition to Boeri, curators include: the dean of Tongji University School of Architecture and Urban Planning, Lee Xiangning, international critic and independent artist, Fang Zhenning, and co-curators Guo Xiaoyan, Feng Lu and Tommaso Sacchi.

The title of SUSAS 2017 exhibition this year is, This-CONNECTION – sharing a future of public space.” Visitors will be able to see futuristic architecture, urban planning, art, and design for three months following October 15th.

  • Music as a Public Good: Kaleel Skeirik at TEDxXavierUniversity

    17:51

Kaleel Skeirik, Professor of Music at Xavier University in Cincinnati, Ohio, has a B.M. and a M.M. in piano performance and a Ph.D. in music theory from the College-Conservatory of Music at the University of Cincinnati.

For many years, he toured as a self-managed pianist throughout the eastern and mid-western United States, giving over a hundred concerts and programming his newly composed works alongside of the classics. More recently he has composed works for orchestra, mixed ensembles and chorus (equal tempered and micro-tonal), women's chorus, band, multi-media with instruments and staged singers, piano, music for dramas, and numerous other chamber works. His works have been performed by the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, the Lima Symphony Orchestra, Xavier University, Hayner Cultural Center in Ohio, Cincinnati School for the Performing Arts and numerous other venues east of the Mississippi River. Some works, such as those for steel drums and orchestra, are pure music without programmatic associations. Other compositions explore the human condition in war, peace, love and death. At Xavier University he created a sequence of courses on these topics through the study of ethics and music. Other courses include a diversity-oriented course in American popular music. As a writer, he has written on piano pedagogy, the structure of Jean Sibelius's music, and the diminishing role of new music programmed at major orchestral concerts written by living composers. At Xavier University he regularly teaches music theory and composition and has served as chair of the Music Department. He has been the recipient of many grants for composition, research and teaching. Finally, he has authored and led accreditation studies for the Department of Music as well as successfully developing grants to benefit students in the program.

Lithuania is a country that’s easy to love. It has been through some amazing history, and quite a few interesting places and traditions have survived until our times. So we’ve come up with a list of lesser-known facts about Lithuania. How many of these did you know before this article?
    1. Lithuanian is one of the oldest language in the world today. This language is one of the oldest living Indo-European language of Europe.

    2. Basketball is the most popular sport in this country. Several Lithuanians have gone on to NBA fame, the greatest star being Arvydas Sabonis.

    3. One of the most famous Lithuanian dishes is Cepelinai. It was named so because of its oval shape which resembles a Zeppelin airship.

    4. Easter eggs are not brought by cute and fluffy animals, it’s granny Velykų Bobute who does it. Bunnies just help her decorate the eggs and load her cart. She has a sunbeam whip to urge her small pony forward.

    5. Every year the river Vilnia is dyed bright emerald green for St. Patrick’s Day. The idea originated in Chicago in the sixties, when Irish plumbers discovered an entirely harmless way of dyeing water.

    LYRICS

    I gave you red
It was the color of my heart
    The color of my love
    I gave you yellow
    Brighter than the sun
    The color of my love

    I shine for you
    I shine

    But you were colorblind
    Everything was black and white
And I was like the northern lights
It was breaking me up inside
    You were colorblind
We were living a grayscale life
And nothing ever caught your eye
And i have finally seen the light
    You were colorblind

    You gave me blue
Now the color of my heart
    Cooling down my love
    But I’m no fool
    I see who you are
    Oblivious to love
That’s right in front of you

    I shine for you
    I shine

    But you were colorblind
    Everything was black and white
And I was like the northern lights
It was breaking me up inside
    You were colorblind
We were living a grayscale life
And nothing ever caught your eye
And I have finally seen the light
    You were colorblind

    Yea

    The tones they fade
    From rainbow to beige
And the hue and the shade
    Get further away
    But I am not green
    I'm a technicolor dream
    And this is really me
    Even if you cannot see

    I shine for you
    I shine

    But you were colorblind
    Everything was black and white
It was breaking me up inside

We were living a grayscale life
And nothing ever caught your eye
And I have finally seen the light
    You were colorblind

    Yea

And I have finally seen the light

  • “All These Things I’ve Done” - The Killers live in Chicago

    5:53

This is what a Killers concert is like...a high-energy roller coaster that builds up to moments like these a half a dozen times in a single show that just rocks again and again and again. Absolutely fantastic ... and stick with this one through the confetti cannon. It’s worth it. Boom!!!

    Enjoy!

  • What Is Search Engine Optimization SEO

    3:30

Search engine optimization (SEO) is the process of affecting the visibility of a website or a web page in a search engine's unpaid results - often referred to as natural, organic, or earned results. In general, the earlier (or higher ranked on the search results page), and more frequently a site appears in the search results list, the more visitors it will receive from the search engine's users. SEO may target different kinds of search, including image search, local search, video search, academic search,[1] news search and industry-specific vertical search engines.

As an Internet marketing strategy, SEO considers how search engines work, what people search for, the actual search terms or keywords typed into search engines and which search engines are preferred by their targeted audience. Optimizing a website may involve editing its content, HTML and associated coding to both increase its relevance to specific keywords and to remove barriers to the indexing activities of search engines. Promoting a site to increase the number of backlinks, or inbound links, is another SEO tactic.
Basic search engine optimization (SEO) is fundamental. And essential. SEO will help you position your website properly to be found at the most critical points in the buying process or when people need your site.

What are search engines looking for? How can you build your website in a way that will please both your visitors/customers, as well as Google, Bing, and other search engines? Most importantly, how can SEO help your web presence become more profitable?

During the Introduction to SEO session at SES New York, Carolyn Shelby (@CShel), Director of SEO, Chicago Tribune/435 Digital, fully explained the extreme value SEO can deliver to a site, and stressed the importance of basic SEO using the following analogy:

Skipping the basics and spending all your time and money on social and 'fancy stuff' is the same as skipping brushing your teeth and showering, but buying white strips and wearing expensive cologne, Shelby said.

1st try. Light singers on the night so exhausted my list early. Last minute throw-in, figured I knew this one well enough to attempt.
