  • CAPTAIN WALTER DYETT: Chicagos legendary jazz educator - a TRIBUTE concert

    57

QUESTION: What do all these master musicians have in common?

Gene Ammons, Ronnie Boykins, Oscar Brashear, Wilbur Campbell, Sonny Cohn, Nat King Cole, Jerome Cooper, Richard Davis, Bo Diddley, Dorothy Donegan, Jimmy Ellis, Von Freeman, John Gilmore, Johnny Griffin, Eddie Harris, Johnny Hartman, Milt Hinton, Fred Hopkins, Joseph Jarman, Leroy Jenkins, Clifford Jordan, Claude McLin, Pat Patrick, Walter Perkins, Julian Priester, Wilbur Ware, Dinah Washington.

ANSWER: They all were students of Captain Walter Dyett, the legendary band director at Chicago's DuSable High School. This is a profound testimony regarding the impact that one educator can have - on individual lives and for our culture at large.

Learn more about Chicago's precious gem:

From 1986 to 1994 the Chicago Jazz Express was produced by the Jazz Institute of Chicago (JIC) in tandem with the Chicago Public Schools as an educational outreach program for high school students. It involved concerts in the schools but also follow-up activities such as study guides about the history of the music. This video is the local TV news coverage (NBC & CBS) of that day's presentation at Chicago's DuSable High School where Walter Dyett worked his musical magic and had a lasting effect on so many young, impressionable minds.

The horn players at this concert are DuSable alumni Von Freeman & Clifford Jordan on tenor saxophone, Jimmy Ellis on alto saxophone and Julian Priester on trombone.

Read an article about the inception of the Jazz Express program by Irving Zucker, the teacher who launched and coordinated it along with Wilbur Campbell as Artistic Director.

High School Musical stars singing the final song, We're All In This Together

  • Irelands Favourite Folk Song | Luka Bloom

    3:58

Ireland’s Favourite Folk Song, is a brand new RTÉ TV series and national campaign in association with IMRO to identify and celebrate the songs that define us as a people.

Throughout the centuries, folk music has immortalised the real, live experiences of the citizens who have lived on, or passed through this island. Ireland has a vast archive of beautiful folk songs, both in English and in Irish, which its citizens draw on in times of joy and sorrow, to entertain, or to capture big personal or historic moments. Many of these songs have been passed down through families for generations. Some of these songs were written by Irish people, some brought in from other cultures, but what sets folk music apart is that it captures the eternal stories, hopes and struggles of ordinary people.

During January and early February 2019, RTÉ instigated a callout to members of the public to nominate their favourite songs. Nominations are currently being reviewed by an independent jury of music lovers and experts who will create a shortlist of ten folk songs they feel best capture the public’s favourites, but also the spirit and story of Ireland.

On 19th April, RTÉ will announce the 10 shortlisted folk songs to the nation in a special edition of The Ronan Collins Show on RTÉ Radio 1. Over the following five weeks, people will be invited to discuss the songs through various channels.

To help people to make an informed choice, a brand new 5-part TV series, Ireland’s Favourite Folk Song, presented by Mary Black, begins on RTÉ One on 21st April. Each episode will tell the story behind two of the shortlisted songs. Audiences will be also able to discover more about each song across RTÉ Radio 1 and on

As part of RTE's search for Ireland's Favourite Folk Song we visited The Holy Family Secondary School in Newbridge, Kildare to deliver a folk music seminar with Irish folk singer-songwriter Luka Bloom.

As well as that, with the help of leading Irish songwriter Luan Parle, the talented students wrote a song of their own on the topic of self-belief. Thanks again to all involved.

  • Footloose: The Musical

    1:53:21

*NOMINATED FOR BEST MUSICAL, BEST LEAD ACTOR, BEST MUSICAL DIRECTION, & BEST CHOREOGRAPHY AT THE COUNT BASIE THEATRE AWARDS*
The Monmouth Regional HS Theatre Company
    proudly presents
    FOOTLOOSE: THE MUSICAL
One of the most explosive movie musicals in recent memory bursts onto the live stage with exhilarating results. When Ren and his mother move from Chicago to a small farming town, Ren is prepared for the inevitable adjustment period at his new high school. What he isn't prepared for are the rigorous local edicts, including a ban on dancing instituted by the local preacher, determined to exercise the control over the town's youth that he cannot command in his own home. When the reverend's rebellious daughter sets her sights on Ren, her roughneck boyfriend tries to sabotage Ren's reputation, with many of the locals eager to believe the worst about the new kid. The heartfelt story that emerges is of a father longing for the son he lost and of a young man aching for the father who walked out on him. To the rockin' rhythm of its Oscar and Tony-nominated top 40 score (the soundtrack album reached number one on the Billboard charts and has sold over 15 million copies!) and augmented with dynamic new songs for the stage musical, FOOTLOOSE celebrates the wisdom of listening to young people, guiding them with a warm heart and an open mind.

La Bamba Violin Solo recording session in NYC. Arr by Mark O'Connor from the O'Connor Method Book IV. A New American School of String Playing

Mark O'Connor - Violin - for the O'Connor Method Book IV and its companion CD MOC 4

La Bamba is a Mexican folk song dating back to 1680 in Veracruz. Dance the Bamba, needing a little grace (or humor)......became one of rock and roll's signature anthems by Ritchie Valens in 1958. La Bamba is also one of the oldest Mexican Sones Jarochos, a traditional song form originating in a region that includes southern Veracruz, eastern Oaxaca and northern Tabasco. The instrumentation of this traditional Mexican music included violin, bass, harp, tambourine, quijada (the jaw of a donkey) and a tarima (a foot-high platform made of wood for dancers to add percussion to the music with their feet). The roots of the music combine from Spain, Africa and the native Aztecs. It is believed that the enslaved Africans in Mexico created the tarimas after being deprived of drums by their captors.

This video is the actual footage from the professional CD recording session. Violin students can see Mr. O'Connor as he records the very rendition that he authored for his Method and is included in Book IV. O'Connor is playing through a matched pair of Neumann M49 microphones circa 1953.

Recorded March, 13th, 2014 at Sean Swinney Studios, New York City

  • Mozart: Eine kleine Nachtmusik; Valley of the Moon Music Festival, original instruments 4K

    5:56

The opening allegro from Mozart's Eine Kleine Nachtmusik K.525 (Serenade for Strings in G Major). 4K, ultra high definition video from the Valley of the Moon Music Festival, July, 2016, performed on original instruments. Carla Moore & Isabelle Seula Lee, violins, Liana Bérubé, viola, Tanya Tomkins, violincello & Eric Zivian, fortepiano. This work is here presented for the first time in 4K video filmed on original instruments.
After many years of exploring, performing and recording the chamber music of the Classical and Romantic periods on period instruments, founders Tanya Tomkins and Eric Zivian have come to the conclusion that these well-known pieces can be experienced in a completely new way, not only through the unique qualities of period instruments but also through a full understanding of period style.
For the past ten years, directors Eric and Tanya have immersed themselves in Classical and Romantic music on period instruments: recording, performing, and teaching these pieces from a historic perspective; this experience led to the idea of starting a music festival devoted to performing and teaching this repertory on period instruments. The Valley of the Moon Music Festival is not just an exciting series of summer concerts in the beautiful town of Sonoma, but it is also a place for emerging musicians to thrive as they incorporate this chamber music into their professional lives.
For more information, visit the festival on the web at

This video is a unique collaboration between the Valley of the Moon Festival and the Voices of Music Great Works Project. The Great Works Project makes Classical Music available free anywhere in the world, and these materials can be used by students and teachers and as part of the curriculum of schools and conservatories. Our video channel is one of the largest and most accessible classical music channels in the world.
Mozart's Eine Kleine Nachtmusik was composed in 1787, but not published until after the composer's death. The first movement is in Sonata Allegro form, and begins with a rapid upward arpeggio, typical of the Mannheim rocket themes; a similar gesture is used by Mozart in his Piano Sonata in C minor, K. 457. The theme is used later on in inversion as well as part of the short coda at the end of the movement. The original title reads: Eine kleine Nachtmusik, bestehend in einem Allegro. Menuett und Trio.–Romance.Menuett und Trio, und Finale.–2 violini, viola e bassi. A little serenade, consisting of an allegro, a minuet and trio, a romance, [another] minuet and trio, and a finale. For two violins, viola, and bass instruments. The somewhat cryptic term bassi at the end of the description would seem to imply a larger group than a string quartet (although the form of the work is eminently suitable for a quartet); some performers choose to add a double bass, or perform the work with a larger ensemble. Support for the addition of the double bass comes from the rubric in the manuscript part: Violoncello e Contra Basso. In this performance, fortepianist Eric Zivian completes the orchestration with an an improvised part for piano, assuming Mozart's traditional role of the player of basso continuo: this interpretation is entirely in keeping with the performance practice of the time, in which keyboard instruments were part of the orchestra and ensembles. In 1883, Breitkopf & Härtel published the work as a quintet as part of the series of Mozart's works, adding the double basses to the cello part; however, there is no independent fifth part; the subsequent Peters edition, ca. 1890, lists the work as a quartet. Mozart's skillful use of texture and imitation in the inner parts lends a shimmering vitality and buoyancy to the entire work.
Further reading: the scoring of this work and similar works is cogently discussed in James Webster's article in the Journal of the American Musicological Society, Vol. 27, No. 2 (Summer, 1974), pp. 212. Public domain and Creative Commons scores and parts are available on IMSLP:

ABOUT US - GoBKK is an independant exploring, hosting and Concierge company. We would like to show you Bangkok in a totally different way and from a different angle - off the beaten tracks and far away from the Grand Palace. Don't get us wrong - the Grand Palace is absolutely stunning and beautiful, but there are enough tours on these big sights already. With us you will experience Bangkok in small groups only, giving you wonderful and memorable moments.

Small groups 1 to 6 people we proceed - Even if only one person booked the tour. We offer a variety of day-experiences and a couple of nightlife-walks as well in Bangkok, Thailand.

    Our List Tours;
    - 9-ways-of-transportation
    - Thai culture and gosts
    - the 4 world religions walk
    - Ko Kret - handicraft island
    - hangover ii - filmset tour
    - Visit a cat shelt

    List of Public Transportation in Bangkok Thailand;

    1. Skytrain (BTS) - The Skytrain is an efficient and convenient way to navigate around the inner city, at a cost low enough to relax and enjoy the ride, though not cheap.
    2. Taxis - Taxis are cheap and fares start at 35 Baht. Make sure the meter is on and showing 35 baht, though it is often difficult to convince the driver to do so.
    3. Chao Phraya River Express Boat - In a city teeming with traffic like Bangkok, an even easier way to experience a bit of Bangkok is to hop on the Chao Phraya Express boats that run along the river in both directions.
    4. Saen Saep canal boat - Saen Saep canal boat cuts across the downtown and its traffic jams running from the Rattanakosin Island with the Grand Palace and temples in the west to the Pratunam shopping area near Siam and from there to the western suburbs.
    5. Motorcycle Taxi - For shorter distances motorcycle taxis can be found on many street corners. This is helpful especially for accessing the Skytrain or the Subway.
    6. Subway (MRT) - The Subway (MRT) is a welcome addition to the Skytrain and gives access to more areas than the Skytrain already does. There are interchange stations at Silom and at Asoke where you have the possibility to change from the subway to the Skytrain and the other way around, but the systems are independent of each other and not very handy to use in tandem.
    7. BRT Bus - A single route Bus Rapid Transit system is now open.
    8. Tuk Tuk - Some may believe that your Bangkok trip is incomplete if you do not ride just once in a Tuk Tuk, but you may want to save this experience for a less congested city where the fumes are not so bad, and the danger less.
    9. Airport Rail Link (ARL) - The Airport Rail Link provides an inexpensive and fairly quick rail connection from Suvaranabhumi (BKK) airport to downtown Bangkok.
    10. Public (BMTA) Buses - There is a huge network of public buses in the city, but little English language route information is available, though they are not difficult to figure out.
    11. Public (BMTA) Vans - A network of white passenger vans complements the bus network, but little English language route information is available.

  • 498: Steve Tramontozzi on his path through the music world

    1:11:38

I first met Steve Tramontozzi back in 2000 at the Pacific Music Festival.  Steve was our bass coach that summer, and it was such a pleasure to work with him on solo playing, orchestral repertoire, and bass ensembles.  Steve is assistant principal bass for the San Francisco Symphony and also teaches bass at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music.  Steve is also one heck of a solo player, and I’ve had several opportunities to see him play here in San Francisco.

Steve just released his latest album Walkabout.  This album features pieces for double bass and piano in a variety of styles.  It’s a super-cool project, and you have to check out the cover for an epic view of Steve with his bass!

We dig into Walkabout, his journey from the East Coast to Brazil, how he found himself in San Francisco, and what it has been like being in the orchestra over the years.  Enjoy!

  • Snatch - Another Brick In The Wall

    6:37

From '' Another Brick In The Wall ''
    Label: Millennium -- YD-11793
    Format: Vinyl, 12, 33 ⅓ RPM
    Country: US
    Released: 1980

    Tracklist
A Another Brick In The Wall
    Producer, Engineer -- Geoffrey Chung
    Written-By -- Roger Waters
    B Stand Up
Producer -- Doug Frank, Jeanne Napoli
Written-By -- Bernard Fowler, Doug Frank, Jeanne Napoli, Steven Brown

    ------------------------

Another Brick in the Wall is the title of three songs set to variations of the same basic theme, on Pink Floyd's 1979 rock opera,
The Wall, subtitled Part 1 (work title Reminiscing), Part 2 (work title Education), and Part 3 (work title Drugs).
All parts were written by Pink Floyd's bassist, Roger Waters. Part II is a protest song against rigid schooling in general and boarding schools in particular, which led to the song being banned in South Africa during the apartheid regime.
It was also released as a single and provided the band's only number one hit in the United Kingdom, the United States, West Germany and many other countries. In addition, in the US, along with the tracks, Run Like Hell, and Don't Leave Me Now, Another Brick in the Wall reached number fifty-seven on the disco chart.
In the UK, it was their first single since 1968's Point Me at the Sky: the song was also the final number one single of the 1970s.
For Part II, Pink Floyd received a Grammy nomination for Best Performance by a Rock Duo or Group and lost to Bob Seger's Against the Wind. In addition, Part II was number 375 on Rolling Stone's list of The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time. The single sold over 4 million copies worldwide.

The single, as well as the album The Wall, were banned in South Africa in 1980 after the song was adopted by supporters of a nationwide school boycott protesting racial inequities in education.

  • Anderson .Paak & The Free Nationals: NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert

    15:38

August 15, 2016 by BOBBY CARTER • Good luck trying to classify Anderson .Paak and his band The Free Nationals. Much of their sound is layered atop a soulful hip-hop foundation; from there, your safest bet is to call it a hodgepodge of genres in the best way possible. Guitarist Jose Rios and bassist Kelsey Gonzalez inject a hard-rock edge into the Hi-Tek-produced Come Down, this set's opening number. When you hear them play the first few jazz chords of Heart Don't Stand A Chance, it's hard to simply call this R&B.

It's been a slow build for .Paak, who released a few mixtapes before his 2014 debut album Venice. This year has marked his official breakout with Malibu, on which he did what so many in his position fail to do: He capitalized. After bursting into the spotlight with his appearances on Dr. Dre's Compton LP, he immediately prepped the release of Malibu. The album sculpted an entirely new lane for Anderson .Paak. He can rhyme with best of 'em, and his vocal styling, reminiscent of '70s and '80s greats, is invigorating when set against today's tender R&B elite. Before all that, he's a drummer-slash-bandleader.

I've experienced three separate presentations of this band. First, there's the recorded version, on which .Paak collaborates with some of hip-hop's finest producers. Then, their tight stage show hits you in the chest with 90-plus minutes of pure energy. In the midst of a whirlwind tour, they stopped by the Tiny Desk and reworked three cuts from Malibu, along with an audience request that shocked even them. They stripped down and pulled back just enough to fill the room.

  • Kanye West & Lil Pump - I Love It

    2:16

Kanye Omari West (/ˈkɑːnjeɪ/; born June 8, 1977) is an American rapper, singer, songwriter, record producer, entrepreneur and fashion designer. Born in Atlanta and raised in Chicago, West first became known as a producer for Roc-A-Fella Records in the early 2000s, contributing to hit singles for artists such as Jay-Z, Ludacris and Alicia Keys. Intent on pursuing a solo career as a rapper, West released his debut album The College Dropout in 2004 to widespread critical and commercial success, and founded the record label GOOD Music. He went on to pursue a variety of styles on subsequent albums, including the polarizing but influential 808s & Heartbreak (2008). He released the critically acclaimed album My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy in 2010, and has since succeeded it with the abrasive and polarizing Yeezus (2013) and the fragmented and experimental The Life of Pablo (2016), as well as full-length collaborations with Jay-Z and Kid Cudi.

West's outspoken views and life outside of music have received significant mainstream attention. He has been a frequent source of controversy for his conduct at award shows, on social media, and in other public settings, as well as his comments on the music and fashion industries, U.S. politics, and race. As a fashion designer, he has collaborated with Nike, Louis Vuitton, and A.P.C. on both clothing and footwear, and have most prominently resulted in the YEEZY collaboration with Adidas beginning in 2013. He is the founder and head of the creative content company DONDA. His marriage to television personality Kim Kardashian has also been a source of substantial media attention.

West is among the most critically acclaimed musicians of the 21st century and one of the best-selling music artists of all time.[4] He has won a total of 21 Grammy Awards, making him one of the most awarded artists of all time and the most Grammy-awarded artist of his generation.[5] Three of his albums have been included and ranked on Rolling Stone's 2012 update of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time list. Time magazine named him one of the 100 most influential people in the world in 2005 and 2015.

azzy Garcia was born August 17, 2000 in Miami, Florida. When Garcia was 13 years old, his cousin introduced him to Omar Pineiro, better known as Smokepurpp; the two eventually became collaborators. Garcia and Piniero were expelled from multiple district schools. Garcia, thereafter, enrolled in an opportunity high school but was expelled in the tenth grade for fighting and inciting a riot

  • JD Lawrences: Loves The Way

    3:41

    follow me on twitter @KingofDramedy

JD Lawrence, known as the King of Dramedy, is an American playwright, actor, comedian, author, director and producer of film, television and stage plays. The multi-hyphenate plays as many as seven characters in a single production and has been dubbed The Man of Many Faces by EBONY Magazine. Lawrence even at the age of eight has always had a passion and respect for entertainment. It was only natural that he would one day become the force that he is in the industry today.
Born with a profound speech impediment, the road to success has not come easy for Lawrence. He hit several roadblocks early in his career when he discovered his handicap would prevent directors, producers and promoters from hiring him. Yet Lawrence would let nothing stand in his way. He turned what others would consider a stumbling block into his stepping stool. Overcoming his obstacles, he began writing, producing and starring in his own productions. Today, his productions provide jobs to over 1,000 people across the country including some of the very same industry executives that once turned him down. JD Lawrence has repeatedly performed to sold-out audiences across the country and is one of only two African American playwrights in the world to direct, produce and star in their own production in Las Vegas' Planet Hollywood.
Lawrence has discovered how to turn his passion into profit with the triumphant runs of several stage plays such as Bless Them Anyhow, Family Affair, When A Man Cries, Cut the Devil Loose, Scissors, If You Don't Stand for Something You'll Fall for Anything, Rumors, The Clean Up Woman and his latest production, Me & Mrs. Jones. His productions have grossed over $20 million.
JD Lawrence is not only a prolific playwright; he is also the founder of The Lawrence Method. Comprised of discipline, dedication and integrity along with rigorous drills to achieve character self-evaluations, these are just some of the unique and unorthodox approaches that make up The Lawrence Method.
The Grammy and Emmy Award winning director has worked with the likes of Emmy Award winner Jackee' Harry, Ashford & Simpson, Fred Hammond, El DeBarge, Letoya Luckett, Dave Hollister, Darrin Dewitt Henson, Telma Hopkins, Red Grant, Edwin Hawkins, Darius McCrary, Natalie Wilson, Eva Pigford, Nephew Tommy (Steve Harvey Morning Show), George Willborn (Michael Baisden Show), Alyson Williams, Latrice Pace, Robin S.,Tony Terry and the late Ali Woodson, Ronald Winans and Willie Neal Johnson, just to name a few.
Further expanding on his multiple talents, Lawrence's brand will launch a sitcom in 2011 along with a theatrical and DVD release of his hit stage play, The Clean Up Woman. Lawrence will live up to his brand and nickname, The Man of Many Faces, as he, yet again, plays multiple characters in all offerings. Adding to his list of firsts, Lawrence is the first playwright to make the Network Journal's (in association with Time Warner) Top Forty African American Entrepreneurs List. The 2007 Telly Award winner is also a two-time Keep America Beautiful National Award-winning writer and director. His unique talents have earned him two public performing arts Special Recognition Awards from the town of Babylon, New York, a Legislature Distinguished Achievement Award from the City of Chicago, and a Certificate of Special Recognition from Congress. Lawrence has received the key to the city in Lafayette, Louisiana and was given his own day (JD Lawrence Day, February 20th) by Mayor John C. Tkazyik in Poughkeepsie, New York.
JD Lawrence has given back to his own community selflessly as well, most notably, adopting a highway and creating the first theatrical health fair in his hometown. To date, he has raised over a million dollars for countless churches and community organizations. While on tour, he lectures at grade schools, churches, community centers and universities, to inspire youth to pursue the arts. As his success continues to skyrocket, JD Lawrence has remained true to himself and steadfast in his faith. Lawrence is humble and grateful to share his knowledge and gift of laughter with the world around him. JD Lawrence is a star in every aspect of the word and his light will only shine brighter in the years to come. You can catch Lawrence in his new stageplay JD Lawrence's I'll Always Love My Momma now on tour. Starring Lawrence playing over seven HILARIOUS characters also starring Johnny Gill, Dottie Peoples, Dave Hollister and Jackee Harry.
