This collection of love songs by some of the worlds greatest singing stars covers mans aspects of that most potent of emotions. The emphasis is on dreamy and laid-back ballads, though there is a sprinkling of more up-tempo numbers too; all for your listening pleasure.
The late, great Ella Fitzgerald contributes two numbers to this compilation, recorded ten years apart. Her warm, caressing tones are well in evidence on the stylishly arranged 1929 evergreen I’ve Got A Feeling I’m Falling, recorded some years before she became an international headliner (from the mid- 1950s) under the astute management of Norman Granz. From 1937, we have Ella in the company of The Mills Brothers in Dedicated To You, made at a time when she was the girl singer with Chick Webb’s band. But performances like this don’t date; the poise and professionalism were already there in spades.

In retrospect, the swing era seems to have been marked by a kind of musical hedonism. The excitement generated by big bands, the exotic dance hall environments in which they worked, the vivid publicity which they earned, all contributed to the idea that non-stop enjoyment was not only desirable but inevitable. Swing numbers were usually up-tempo, the dancers busily jitterbugging, the bandsmen sometimes outlandish, their road stories helping to sustain the music’s glamorous aura.
Much of this (if not all) is true, of course. Swing-style jazz flourished in America and Europe in the immediate post-depression period, building in popularity as the Second World War loomed so who can blame the fans for their desire to shut out oncoming difficulties? They wanted entertainment and pleasure, and loved the animation and vitality of the best swing bands. For all that, the famous orchestras or instrumentalists of the day knew full well that a diet of non-stop flag-wavers could pall and paced their presentations with slower ballads and blues, often featuring a key soloist who might create a lush version of a show song. Of course, this allowed dancers to smooch, to linger romantically, before the programme changed.
It’s this facet of swing – its ‘laid-back’ aspect in modern parlance – which we celebrate here. Tempos are slower and some smaller groups are given their head, the individual players better able to demonstrate their virtuosity and control. The music still swings, but there’s subtlety and sophistication in these performances as well.

Jazz has always welcomed innovators. Duke Ellington's new compositions made Jelly Roll Morton seem old hat, Lester Young changed the voice of the tenor-saxophone and Charlie Christian pioneered an approach to jazz performance on guitar which still carries weight today. Bebop, on the other hand, was not simply the outcome of a single individual's drive and musical vision, it was a complete movement in its own right, made up of artists dedicated to change. With its advent in the early 1940s, jazz was never the same again.
So, what is bebop exactly - what does this strange word mean? French critic Hugues Panassie, something of a reactionary in these things, dismissed bebop (usually known now as bop) as 'a form of music distinct from jazz' while trumpeter Dizzy Gillespie described it simply as 'just the way my friends and I feel jazz.' Saxophonist Charlie Parker, the new music's finest exponent, held a more measured view, inadvertently echoing that of Panassie when he said it was 'something entirely separate and apart.' It's a measure of bebop's originality, its 'avant-garde' status, that it is still considered by many to be 'modern' today.

Django Reinhardt - GREATEST HITS (FULL ALBUM)
    Download on Google Play:

Jean Django Reinhardt ( 23 January 1910 – 16 May 1953) was a Belgian-born French jazz guitarist and composer of Romani ethnicity, regarded as one of the greatest musicians of the twentieth century, having written nearly 100 songs, according to Frank Vignola. He was the first and most significant jazz talent to emerge from Europe. Despite having two of his fingers disabled from a fire, he overcame the handicap and went on to forge an entirely new style of jazz guitar technique (sometimes called 'hot' jazz guitar), which has since become a living musical tradition within French Gypsy culture. Benny Goodman asked him to travel with his band, which he never did, but he did tour the U.S. with Duke Ellington's band in 1946. He died suddenly of a stroke at age 43. With violinist Stéphane Grappelli, Reinhardt formed the Paris-based Quintette du Hot Club de France (Hot Club) in 1934, today considered one of the most original bands in the history of recorded jazz. Reinhardt's most popular compositions have become jazz standards, including Minor Swing, Daphne, Belleville, Djangology, Swing '42, and Nuages. According to jazz guitarist Frank Vignola, nearly every major popular-music guitarist in the world has been influenced by Django, including Paul McCartney, Keith Richards and Les Paul. Over the last few decades, annual Django festivals have been held throughout Europe and the U.S., and a biography has been written about his life. In February 2017, the Berlin International Film Festival held the world premiere of the French film, Django.

Want to play great sounding jazz piano chords?

Great news! You DON’T have to first learn jazz theory to play fantastic sounding jazz chords. In fact, it can confuse and frustrate you if you dive first into the treacherous world of jazz theory.

There’s lots of videos, blog posts, and teaching online that will show you the basic root position ‘jazz’ piano chords, but these generally sound corny.

So how about we learn to play some great sounding, easy jazz chords, and we’ll catch the theory along the way as needed.

There can only be a handful of people in the Western world who haven’t heard of Glenn Miller and his music. His orchestra existed for only five years yet it made an indelible mark on the history of popular music, changing and modernising dance music styles almost overnight.
Along with his contemporaries, Benny Goodman, the Dorsey Brothers, Artie Shaw and others, he was a driving force and combined swing with out and out dance music which kept the publics attention, not only in those five short years which saw the outbreak of World War II, but ever since.
Glenn Miller collectors will always point out that the ten or so bestsellers, most of them instrumentals, are just scratching the surface of Millers output of over 300 sides for RCA in the States, and this collection covers not only the most well known and perhaps best loved titles that Glenn made his own, but also a goodly selection of the rest.
Miller’s famous theme, Moonlight Serenade, performs its usual task of getting things under way. No surprise that this record is one of the five most requested discs on record programmes in this country and surely the most imitated record by other bands down the years. Recorded in April 1939 and just six days before that other favourite, Little Brown Jug, Millers theme puts us all in the mood for what follows.

    The Abstract -

Jazz Standards have been on my brain this past week. Maybe blame Jacob Mann, who's currently crushing the wedding/bar mitzvah game with his Jazz Standers Trio.

I have friends who tell me jazz is dead. Whether it's magical thinking or confirmation bias born of spending 6 years of my life and a consequential sum of money on my jazz education, I'm not ready to say that by a long shot.

Nor am I fully on-board with the thesis that Kneebody and Snarky Puppy are the jazz now. Those are two of my favorite musical acts, but I don't think even they'd say they were jazz - definitely jazz influenced, but not jazz per se.

Nor am I ready to say the only jazz is completely repertory. Rehashing the 1950s like zero time has passed. I think we've come too far since 1990 to go back.

The sweet spot - one some friends insist is so small as to be inconsequential (and obviously I disagree) - is jazz that isn't fusion, but isn't repertory either. And I assert there are *plenty* of records in that vein.

Which begs the question: why aren't any of those tunes in real books?

    Seamus Blake's Badlands.

    Terence Blanchard's Wandering Wonder.

    Zhivago by Kurt, f@#$ sakes.

This video simultaneously catalogues ten records I think we should add to the real book, and my climate-fueled retreat to the west coast for a few days.

    Hope you enjoy.

This is one of the first jazz standards I ever learned! The first “jazz gig” I ever did was at someone’s birthday party and I sang the only five jazz standards I knew- but this one I learned at the last minute to expand my set! Nine years later I’m now working on my second jazz album :) Enjoy!
