  • Amazing 14 Year Old Jazz Violinist, Gianna Pedregon

    5:50

Gianna's father contacted me and asked if I had room for his daughter to take some lessons. After hearing her play, you'll know why I jumped at the chance. We are having a blast together, and she's working so hard, I just had to share it with you.

  • 20 Jazz violin licks from Stuff smith

    16:25

Stuff Smith was one of the most exciting and innovative jazz violinists in America in the 1930's and 40's. His dirty, punchy and aggressive style contrasts greatly with the elegance of, for example, Stephane Grappelli.
In this video I demonstrate 20 jazz violin licks which illustrate his style, all available on a pdf for subscribers (see my email address at the bottom to request a copy).

  • Introduction to the II/V/I for jazz violin

    18:08

The ll/V/I, or 2-5-1, or two-five one, is an essential part of most jazz chord sequences. In this video, I explain what it is, how to recognise it, and what to do with it. I also explain how, for a beginner improviser, why the ll/V/l is a welcome respite in what can often be difficult and confusing set of chords.

If you're interested in learning to play jazz violin, see my books Beginning jazz violin and Exploring Jazz Violin.

  • Tcha Limberger - Jazz Violin - Ear Training

    3:57

Lesson, transcriptions, and backing track available at :

Be sure to follow us on facebook / twitter for updates:

Excerpt from In The Style Of Tcha Limberger Violin

Tcha Limberger talks about the importance of ear training and learning to sing your solos (scatting). He demonstrates his famous trumpet voice technique. The song demonstrated in these examples is After You've Gone which was recorded by many jazz greats such as Stephane Grappelli and Justin Bieber.

Includes transcriptions in TAB and standard notation, as well as detailed video explanations.

Tcha Limberger was born in a 'Manouche' family with a long-standing musical tradition (his grandfather was the legendary Piotto Limberger). Both his father Vivi, singer and guitar player, and his Flemish mother raised him to understand and appreciate their respective cultures. As a child, Tcha was determined to become a flamenco singer. At age twelve, he started playing the clarinet, joining the family orchestra 'The Piotto's'. Meanwhile, he studied the flamenco guitar, but because of a lack of good teachers, he switched to Django-style (Jazz Manouche / Gypsy Jazz) guitar playing, learning from masters such as Fapy Lafertin and Koen De Cauter. At that time, he worked with 'Het Muziek Lod', where he met Dick Vanderharst, who introduced him to contemporary classical music and modern jazz. Tcha's good friend and colleague, Herman Schamp, exposed him even more deeply to classical music and composing. When Tcha was seventeen, he started studying the violin, inspired by stories on his grand-father and recordings of Toki Horvath. By the time he was twenty-one, he left Belgium for Budapest, where he took classical and tzigane classes from Horvath Bela

  • Autumn Leaves; easy ways to create a jazz violin solo

    20:36

Autumn Leaves is one of the best known and best loved minor key jazz standards, and perfect for the jazz violinist. In this lesson I examine various simple approaches to soloing. Firstly, using the natural minor scale, then the harmonic minor scale. We then try the minor pentatonic and minor blues scales, before finally treating the sequence as a series of II/V/I's.

    14:32

I'm excited to present a new educational video I made to teach string players to really OWN their jazz harmony and how to 'comp' (create improvised accompaniment) in jazz styles on the violin!

This video teaches you how to build the main types of 7th chords and how they fit within the classic ii-V-I progression found all over jazz music.. then how to actually strum them as chords!

If you're interested in playing jazz on a string instrument I think you'll really find this useful.

Let me know what you guys think or if you have any questions!

Video originally created for my good friends at Jazz Memes (I hid a few in the video)

  • Lady be good

    15:20

In this jazz violin lesson I show how to use internal melodies from the chord sequence to form a skeleton for creating a solo on Lady Be Good. Most adjacent sets of three or four chords have some simple ascending or descending line, and these can be used to base a solo around.

  • How to improvise on violin - Creative Violin - lesson 6 Swing

    3:02

    Swing, Gypsy Jazz.
One of the most popular jazz styles for violin is of course the Gypsy Swing, which originated from Django Reinhardt and Stéphane Grappelli’s “Hot Club De France”.
This style is still growing more and more popular all over the world.
Although there were jazz violinists at the time, Stéphane Grappelli can be seen as a pioneer, adding the violin to jazz, first his “Hotclub de France” style, better known as Gypsy Jazz or Manouche, he also played with many great contemporary jazz artists like Oscar Peterson, Michel Legrand.
He was close friends with Yehudi Menuhin, who admired his style of playing tremendously.
In lesson 6 we will work with a few different songs, while we also learn one of the most important chord progressions in Jazz: II-V-I.

We will start with Django's song Daphné where we can practice the jazz style on 2 simple scales, D and Eb.

This is a great way to warm up, understand a scale and find the chords in there at the same time.

It can be hard to learn about where chords come from for a violinist, we dont have to play chords to be part of a band and we dont have anything mapped out in front of us like a piano does. This is a simple way to see where the chords (4 note chords) lie within a scale. For this example we are using the G major scale.

Get on touch via the comments or on the email below if you need a little help with the ideas presented. I am available for skype lessons too.

Excerpt from In The Style Of Jason Anick

Check out In The Style Of Jason Anick lesson series:

Jason improvises over the changes of All Of Me.

One of the youngest violin professors at Boston’s Berklee College of Music, Anick is considered “a rising star in the world of jazz violin and mandolin” (Downbeat Magazine). In addition to leading his own contemporary jazz ensemble and performing with the Rhythm Future Quartet, Anick has been touring and recording with Grammy award-winning Nashville guitar virtuoso John Jorgenson since 2008 when he was recruited while still a senior at the Hartt Conservatory.

Over the past year, Jason has been focusing on arranging and composing for the Rhythm Future Quartet, which he started with Finnish guitarist Olli Soikkeli. With performances all over the U.S. and Europe, the Rhythm Future Quartet is rapidly becoming one of the preeminent Gypsy jazz groups in the country.

A versatile musician and sought after side-man, Anick has also shared the stage with an array of artist like Stevie Wonder, Tommy Emmanuel, The Jim Kweskin Jug Band, John Sebastian, Delta Rae, and Girls, Guns and Glory. With performances all over the world from China, Europe, and Japan and renowned venues like the Montreal Jazz Festival, Blue Note, Scullers Jazz Club, Yoshi's Jazz Club, Iridium, TD Garden, Regattabar, NPR, and The Late Night Show, Jason has proven himself to be a leader in the ever-growing contemporary string world.
