  • Christian Scott aTunde Adjuah: NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert

    33:50

October 09, 2015 by PATRICK JARENWATTANANON
Artists don't usually tell long, rambling stories at the Tiny Desk, and if they do, those stories don't usually make the final cut. But this one felt different. It was about the time Christian Scott aTunde Adjuah, a young black man, says he was stopped by New Orleans police late at night for no reason other than to harass and intimidate him. And how his pride almost made him do something ill-advised about it. And how he finally channeled that pent-up frustration into a piece of music whose long-form title is Ku Klux Police Department.

K.K.P.D. was the emotional peak of the septet's performance, though it wasn't a new tune. That's notable, because Scott stopped by the Tiny Desk on the very day his new album came out. It was played by something of a new band, though: Flutist Elena Pinderhughes, saxophonist Braxton Cook and guitarist Dominic Minix are new, younger additions to the group. It had new textures, too: Drummer Corey Fonville (another new member) used a djembe as a bass drum, and also brought a MIDI pad so he could emulate the sound of a drum machine. The effect was something like an evocation of African roots, juxtaposed with a trap beat.

The first two numbers were, in fact, from Scott's new album Stretch Music. That's his name for the particular type of jazz fusion he's up to: something more seamless than a simple collision of genre signifiers; something whose DNA is already hybridized and freely admits sonic elements which potentially stretch jazz's purported boundaries. (You may note that he showed up in a Joy Division sleeveless T-shirt and gold chain.) It's sleek and clearly modern, awash in guitar riffs, but also bold and emotionally naked. Scott is particularly good at getting you to feel the energy he sends pulsing through his horn, and he never shies away from going all-in on a solo. The least we could offer was to let him explain himself in doing so.

    Stretch Music is available now.

  • Jazz Trumpet Articulation | Jazz Tactics

    11:20

For jazz musicians, articulation style is as unique as tone quality. The process of developing your style is a personal one, but there are common elements. This video sheds light on some of those elements and offers strategies for improving your ability to articulate in a jazz style. Although the focus is on brass players, non-wind instrumentalists would do well to study the way we use tongue and airstream to make lines flow and swing.

On this channel, jazz trumpeter and author Chase Sanborn offers advice and tips for musicians and music students, based on more than forty years of experience as a professional musician. • Herb Alpert - Rise

    4:59

Rise is a song written by Andy Armer and Randy Badazz Alpert, and first recorded by trumpeter Herb Alpert. The instrumental track was included on Alpert's solo album Rise and released as a single in 1979. It reached number one on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 in October of that year and remained in the top position for two weeks. Herb Alpert thus became the first (and only) artist to reach the top of the Hot 100 with a vocal performance (This Guy's in Love with You, 1968) as well as an instrumental performance. Rise also spent one week atop the adult contemporary chart. Rise was successful on the other charts, peaking at number four on the R&B chart and number seventeen on the dance chart. The recording also received a Grammy Award for Best Pop Instrumental Performance. Songwriters Andy Armer and Randy Badazz Alpert were both nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Instrumental Composition. The single, Rise has sold more then a million copies.

Since its introduction by Ignacio Piñeiro back in 1933, names like Felix Chappotín, Chocolate Armentero, The Black Vivar, Jorge Varona, El Guajiro Mirabal, and Arturo Sandoval of course have raised the awareness of the role of this instrument, exerting their influence on generations of trumpet players not only onthe island but abroad. That and much more is that we will experience on this tour of Cuban music. Through delicious rhythms and emblematic instrument control it will pay homage to the unique musical work of the great Arturo Sandoval.

GUAGUANCÓ: (Cuban rumba) Represents a merger of several secular Afro-Cuban rituals known as rumba. Despite its distinctly African rhythms, guaguancó reveals a Spanish influence, especially Flemish and the often use of peasant texts. Estraída of Your Hard Danzon (1993) won a Grammy for The Best Latin Jazz Performance.

  • Insane Latin Jazz Trumpet Solo by Yuliesky Gonzalez on Sofrito

    1:19

Here is a pretty insane Latin Jazz trumpet solo transcription for ya, from a fellow band member in Mambisimo, Yuliesky Gonzalez! He is Cuban and plays in this untranscribable way that latin feel, it's pretty amazing so I wanted to share that with you. Can you grab the rhythmic feel that is played?

This is from a cool International Latin band project I, Jorre, am a part of. Feel so fortunate to play with these kind of inspiring musicians from all over the world! The Mambisimo Big Band consist of more than 7 nationalities from 3 continents. The tune is called Sofrito from Mongo Santamaria and conducted and arranged by the amazing Michael Mossman (Tito Puente, Michel Camilo, etc). You can follow the band on instagram @Mambísimo Big Band or here on Youtube, or on Facebook if you like what you hear!

  • Dizzy Gillespie | Solo

    1:19

    Welcome to MUSIC CIRCLE

Dr. John Birks Dizzy Gillespie ( October 21, 1917 – January 6, 1993) was an American jazz trumpeter, bandleader, composer, educator and singer. He was a trumpet virtuoso and improviser, building on the virtuoso style of Roy Eldridge but adding layers of harmonic and rhythmic complexity previously unheard in jazz. His combination of musicianship, showmanship, and wit made him a leading popularizer of the new music called bebop. His beret and horn-rimmed spectacles, his scat singing, his bent horn, pouched cheeks, and his light-hearted personality provided some of bebop's most prominent symbols.

In the 1940s Gillespie, with Charlie Parker, became a major figure in the development of bebop and modern jazz. He taught and influenced many other musicians, including trumpeters Miles Davis, Jon Faddis, Fats Navarro, Clifford Brown, Arturo Sandoval, Lee Morgan, Chuck Mangione, and balladeer Johnny Hartman.

Scott Yanow wrote, Dizzy Gillespie's contributions to jazz were huge. One of the greatest jazz trumpeters of all time, Gillespie was such a complex player that his contemporaries ended up being similar to those of Miles Davis and Fats Navarro instead, and it was not until Jon Faddis's emergence in the 1970s that Dizzy's style was successfully recreated [....] Arguably Gillespie is remembered, by both critics and fans alike, as one of the greatest jazz trumpeters of all time.

  • Christian Scott: Performing Songs From The Centennial Trilogy | JAZZ NIGHT IN AMERICA

    1:14:47

    Hear the radio episode:

    —————————————————————

    by NATE CHINEN

Spend enough time in New Orleans and you come to understand it as a place for every kind of convergence. The culture hums in an endless exchange, with history forever close at hand. Christian Scott aTunde Adjuah understands this to his core: he grew up immersed in ritual Mardi Gras Indian traditions, and distinguished himself as a jazz trumpeter by his early teens. He's now shaping his own artistic reality, creating what he calls Stretch Music — a proud hybrid of styles and approaches, with a strong underlay of groove. In this episode of Jazz Night in America, we'll join him for an electrifying performance at the New Orleans Jazz Market, where he drew from The Centennial Trilogy, an acclaimed recent release. And we'll cut the heart of his mission, as a bridge-builder, an ambassador and an avatar — every bit a son of New Orleans, and in every sense a citizen of the world.

This set was recorded at the New Orleans Jazz Market on October 24th, 2017 in New Orleans, Louisiana.

Best of Clifford Brown In Paris

Clifford Brown is one of the greatest trumpet players in jazz history. He died at the age of 25 in a car accident, but his influence on generations of trumpet players and musicians has been considerable. Clifford Brown was a virtuoso, an amazing and brilliant technician of the trumpet. His music is modern and completely timeless. This is a “best of” the songs that he recorded in Paris during memorable sessions that featured some of the greatest talents of all time: Gigi Gryce, Quincy Jones, Art Farmer, Jimmy Cleveland. The sound on this program has been digitally re-mastered to achieve what is perhaps the finest sound quality ever.

  • Chapotín: Cubas greatest Trumpet Player?

    5:02

Elpidio Chapotín Delgado is reputed to be one of the great Cuban trumpet players of all time. At the age of 62, he is still determined to take full advantage of life. He lives in a cozy apartment in Havana with his wife Gloria who has prepared a huge snack for us. It is as if we were an infantry battalion instead of merely four people.

Chapotín loves to talk. There is practically no need to ask him any questions because he steadily weaves memories, views, and anecdotes together. He moves easily from one musical period of his life to another. One thing I can say is that I am lucky to have been practically the only musician who played with Gonzalo Roig* and who is still active as a performer today, he says before he quickly realizes that perhaps that was too absolute. He recalls the beginnings of Juan Formell, director of the famous band Los Van Van, when he was as bass player at the Habana Libre Hotel as well as and Chucho Valdés who played in Havana's now defunct Musical Theatre and then in the Orquesta de Música Moderna. I learned from everybody: Formell, Chucho, Adolfo Guzmán, Rafael Somavilla, Tony Taño, Manuel Duchesne, Michel Legrand... he continues as he recites the many outstanding Cuban directors and composers.

  • EDDIE HENDERSON - famed jazz trumpeter, draft notes with a camera

    55:55

    Slawek - PhotoGallery:
Eddie Henderson (born October 26, 1940) is an American jazz trumpet and flugelhorn player. Henderson's influences include Booker Little, Clifford Brown, Woody Shaw, and Miles Davis. Henderson's mother was one of the dancers in the original Cotton Club. She had a twin sister, and they were called The Brown Twins. They would dance with Bill Bojangles Robinson and the Nicholas Brothers. In the film showing Fats Waller playing Ain't Misbehavin', Henderson's mother sat on the piano whilst Waller sang to her. His father sang with Billy Williams and The Charioteers, a popular singing group. At the age of nine he was given an informal lesson by Louis Armstrong, and he continued to study the instrument as a teenager in San Francisco, where he grew up, after his family moved there in 1954, at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. As a young man, he performed with the San Francisco Conservatory Symphony Orchestra. Henderson was influenced by the early fusion work of jazz musician Miles Davis, who was a friend of his parents. They met in 1957 when Henderson was aged seventeen, and played a gig together. After completing his medical education, Henderson went back to the Bay area for his medical internship and residency - and the break that thrust him fully into music. It was a week-long gig with Herbie Hancock's Mwandishi band that led to a three-year job, lasting from 1970-73. In addition to the three albums recorded by the group under Hancock's name, Henderson recorded his first two albums, Realization (1972) and Inside Out (1973), with Hancock and the Mwandishi group. After leaving Hancock, the trumpeter worked extensively with Pharoah Sanders, Mike Nock, Norman Connors, and Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers, returning to the San Francisco Bay Area in 1975 where he joined the Latin-jazz group Azteca, and fronted his own bands. He also recorded with Charles Earland (popular for his version of Let the Music Play in 1978), and later, in the 1970s, led a rock-oriented group. While he gained some recognition for his work with the Herbie Hancock Sextet (1970–1973), his own records were considered too commercial.

  • Masters of Brass - Chuck & Bob Findley - LA Studio Legends - Jazz Trumpet Artists - Trailer 1

    5:09

Interview Film in English by Jon Welch & Son Nguyen (ca. 125 Minutes; Download Only - ca. 1.1 GB). Available in the Online Store at

While Chuck and Bob Findley were on tour with the grand gentleman of European easy listening music, James Last, in the spring of 2009, they were kind enough to spend an afternoon with us to record the first Masters of Brass segment with two artists and what an illustrious pair of brass players they are! And they also just happen to be brothers! Chuck Findley needs no introduction. His list of recording credits reads like a who's who of pop and jazz music of the past 40 years: Babara Streisand, Steely Dan, Natalie Cole, Miles, Earth Wind & Fire, Herbie Hancock, Elton John, Quincy Jones, Madonna, Rod Stewart, the Rolling Stones...and the list goes on and on. Bobby Findley was of course just a phone call away to sub for Chuck on several of the up to 12 recording sessions he had per day during the boom years. Both based in Los Angeles, they have been permanent fixtures in the music and recording scene there since the late 1960s doing steady gigs such as The Tonight Show, The Academy Awards, movie, TV and recording industry sessions and even performing as members of the second incarnation of Herb Alpert's Tijuana Brass. Bobby is also known for his dedication to the great brass teacher Carmine Caruso and he is the leading torchbearer carrying this tradition on into the 21st century. In this film, Chuck and Bob Findley take us from their musical household in Cleveland (there must be something in the water there, says Chuck, as so many current professionals of their generation hail from this American midwestern city - find out about them in the film!) and then on into the Dorsey brother's bands, Buddy Rich, Las Vegas and finally on to their present homes in Los Angeles. Along the way we're treated to fascinating insights into such a musical prodigy as Chuck Findley, become acquainted with their love for jazz music and their thoughts on its culture, hear fabulous true tales of life on the road and in the studio and learn about music and what's so special about it for these two extremely talented brothers. Throughout the entire film a beautiful empathy can be felt between these two siblings whose respect, love and enjoyment of each other is more than apparent. Bobby recognized Chuck's talent early on and nurtured and fed it so that it could be what it is today. Bobby's protective instincts also function to this day and help Chuck remain well-grounded despite his most exceptional musical abilities. For all interested brass players and fans: Chuck and Bob Findley have a lot of meaningful things to say about music and life and it is a pleasure to watch the interactions of two brothers who really appreciate and like each other.
