For somebody who can't read music to learn how an orchestra functions, to be able to see from the perspective of a flute or a second violin, is really enlightening. - Sir John Eliot Gardiner, quoted in an interview by Richard Fairman, Financial Times, February 2014

  • The Pedrito Martinez Group: NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert

Feb. 20, 2019 | Felix Contreras -- Something happens when you get a chance to see Afro-Cuban percussionist Pedrito Martinez perform. First of all, his smile radiates. It's hard to imagine someone happier than he is to make music in front of people; and as we saw during his turn behind Bob Boilen's desk, he mesmerizes with this almost otherworldly talent on congas. His hands can be a blur because they move so quickly. To the untrained eye, it's hard to see exactly what he is doing to draw out the sounds he does from his drums. I even know a little about playing hand drums and it still doesn't make it easier to fathom his remarkable talent.

Pedrito Martinez has gathered around him musicians who are helping him make the music he hears in his head. As you'll hear, it's full of twists and turns and unexpected stops that resolve into grooves so ferocious it's hard to resist moving your entire body in appreciation.

This particular performance at the Tiny Desk is highlighted by a stunning, unaccompanied conga solo that dazzled both neophytes and long-time fans of Afro-Cuban music.

Go ahead. Watch it repeatedly. It will still amaze each time you watch it.

    Habana Dreams:

    Set List
    Tuvé Una Revelación

Pedrito Martinez: percussion, lead vocals; Sebastian Natal: electric bass, vocals; Jhair Sala: percussion, vocals; Issac Delgado Jr.: keyboard, vocals

Producers: Felix Contreras, Morgan Noelle Smith; Creative Director: Bob Boilen; Audio Engineer: Josh Rogosin; Videographers: Morgan Noelle Smith, Kimani Oletu, Beck Harlan, Kara Frame; Associate Producer: Bobby Carter; Production Assistant: Adelaide Sandstrom; Photo: Amr Alfiky/NPR

  • Christian Scott aTunde Adjuah: NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert

October 09, 2015 by PATRICK JARENWATTANANON
Artists don't usually tell long, rambling stories at the Tiny Desk, and if they do, those stories don't usually make the final cut. But this one felt different. It was about the time Christian Scott aTunde Adjuah, a young black man, says he was stopped by New Orleans police late at night for no reason other than to harass and intimidate him. And how his pride almost made him do something ill-advised about it. And how he finally channeled that pent-up frustration into a piece of music whose long-form title is Ku Klux Police Department.

K.K.P.D. was the emotional peak of the septet's performance, though it wasn't a new tune. That's notable, because Scott stopped by the Tiny Desk on the very day his new album came out. It was played by something of a new band, though: Flutist Elena Pinderhughes, saxophonist Braxton Cook and guitarist Dominic Minix are new, younger additions to the group. It had new textures, too: Drummer Corey Fonville (another new member) used a djembe as a bass drum, and also brought a MIDI pad so he could emulate the sound of a drum machine. The effect was something like an evocation of African roots, juxtaposed with a trap beat.

The first two numbers were, in fact, from Scott's new album Stretch Music. That's his name for the particular type of jazz fusion he's up to: something more seamless than a simple collision of genre signifiers; something whose DNA is already hybridized and freely admits sonic elements which potentially stretch jazz's purported boundaries. (You may note that he showed up in a Joy Division sleeveless T-shirt and gold chain.) It's sleek and clearly modern, awash in guitar riffs, but also bold and emotionally naked. Scott is particularly good at getting you to feel the energy he sends pulsing through his horn, and he never shies away from going all-in on a solo. The least we could offer was to let him explain himself in doing so.

    Stretch Music is available now.

    Set List
    West Of The West

Christian Scott aTunde Adjuah, trumpet; Elena Pinderhughes, flute; Braxton Cook, alto saxophone; Lawrence Fields, piano; Dominic Minix, guitar; Kris Funn, bass; Corey Fonville, percussion

Producers: Patrick Jarenwattananon, Morgan Walker; Audio Engineer: Josh Rogosin; Videographer: Morgan Walker, Nick Michael, Cameron Robert; Production Assistant: Julia Reihs; photo by Julia Reihs

This is the first part of a line-up of live footage samples from the greatest drummers that brought great rhythm joy to everybody's life. It's basically centered on Jazz, but not exclusively, and with a chronological display, wherever it was possible, due to the existance of filmed material. The modern drumset was completed and received the designation of jazz drums by the 20's, when the hi-hat pedal system and its pair of cymbals (opposed to each other) was invented. Not only the 'Hi-Hat' name, but also the french designation for that mechanism, Charleston, also shows a clear reference to the period of the 'roaring twenties', when the drums achieved its actual configuration, and are used in Pop, Rock, Soul, Rhythm'n Blues, Blues, and many musical styles, besides Jazz.

  • Erykah Badu: NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert

Aug. 15, 2018 | Felix Contreras -- Some folks around the NPR Music office said they felt an almost spiritual connection to Erykah Badu during her visit to the Tiny Desk. And that was before she and her band even played a single note. It came from the waft of earthly scents that followed in her wake, to the flowing dreads and clothes that hung on her like robes.

After her self-introduction, which included a rundown of her spiritual and creative aliases, Badu rolled into one of her earliest musical calling cards, Rimshot. It's an ode to the sound the percussionist makes when a drumstick is struck against the metal edge of the snare drum. On this performance, as on her 1997 album Baduizm, it becomes a device to play with time — stretching it, stopping it, suspending it. Propelled by jazz chords on the piano and the steady pulse of the acoustic bass, the playful performance unfolded in the tradition of the best bebop.

But the panoramic song Green Eyes is the centerpiece of Badu's Tiny Desk performance. It's wide-ranging in scope and musical arrangement and brilliantly executed by the jazz and hip-hop musicians in her backing band. The story of heartbreak is striking enough, but her interpretation showcases her formidable vocal skills. By the time it was over, we were all just as emotionally and spiritually spent as she was from the experience.

Erykah Badu is an artist for the ages. To old-school jazz fans like myself, names like Nina Simone, Betty Carter and Shirley Horn come to mind as much as Billie Holiday because of Badu's singular approach to a lyric. They all cut their own creative path and left behind a legacy that you can identify with just one note. Erykah Badu is on that same path, and one day her name will be mentioned along with the other Elders who share her spirit of musical adventure.

    Set List
    Green Eyes

Erykah Badu (lead vocals), RC Williams (Keys), Braylon Lacy (bass), Cleon Edwards (Drums), Frank Moka (Percussion), Kenneth Whalum (Sax), Keyon Harrold (Trumpet), Dwayne Kerr (Flute)

This album marks the beginning of a tribute to the drummers of the early seventies who were the backlore of that organic, mysterious, and messy music called funk. It is a reality check, a wake up call, a protest against the stale drum machine music that seems to have been offered as a replacement to real, live, funky drumming.

Over the last fifteen years or so, in response to the disappearance of the funk, fanatics have clung to party grooves like James Brown's Funky Drummer (and a thousand other small label singles) and elevated them to the level of classics. To this day, beat scrutinizers the world over scour for these rare grooves like archaeologists unearthing a lost civilization. Some of these archivists are music producers who (like myself) get their rhythmic inspiration from the impossibly funky breakdowns on these jams.

All of which makes this the perfect time to go back to the creators of this music, roll tape, and make sure there is no mistaking what the funk is and where it came from. On the twelve tracks included here, master drummer Bernard Pretty Purdie revisits some classic moments in funk drumming and offers up some fat new funkies as well. All, of course, stamped with the indelible Purdie sound.

To let that sound come through as clear as possible, a counscious effort was made to 'under-produce' these tracks. No heavy effects were added, and we did not otherways 'hype' the mix. What you have here are a dozen raw, unadulterated drum solos. The pure, uncut funk. Offered in the hope that more people like you will step forward and help keep the funk alive.

  • University of Manchester Jazz Ensemble featuring percussionist Carlos Maldonado

The Music Department’s Jazz Ensemble takes the form of a little big band (a smaller version of the conventional 18-piece big band). The ensemble was established in October 2019 by Dr. Alexander Gagatsis, Lecturer in Jazz Studies and Director of Performance and, alongside the Klezmer and Gamelan groups, it is one of the department’s assessed ensembles that complement the larger orchestras operating under the umbrella of Manchester University Music Society (MUMS). The band made its public debut at Manchester’s iconic venue, Band on the Wall, in December 2019.

Percussionist extraordinaire Carlos Maldonado joined the ensemble virtually for a series of workshops and recordings that resulted in this multiscreen performance, recorded remotely from locations across the UK, New York and Peru.

Our focus this last semester has been on the interaction between jazz and music from the Latin Americas of significant or mainly African ancestry, what is generally understood as Afro Latin jazz. The short programme you are about to hear features arrangements of popular songs of the 20th century in contemporary Afro-Latin settings. Music by Duke Ellington, Dizzy Gillespie and Mongo Santamaria is transformed by Michael Philip Mossman’s inventive arrangements. The music is in a characteristically African 12/8 rhythm, sometimes phrased in 4, others in 3. Kaper’s popular song ‘On Green Dolphin Street’ composed for the homonymous film in 1944 and made famous by Miles Davis’s 1959 rendition in the best-selling album of all times, Kind of Blue, is transformed by Mike Tomaro. The focus throughout is on rhythm. The melodic material, adapted in this performance to suit our working environments, is characteristically dissonant. Tone clusters, a defining characteristic of early jazz, dominate to the point where the sonorities are transformed into percussive effects. Rhythm prevails. The instruments engage in a reciprocal exchange of ideas, living a life of their own, careful not to get ahead or behind in their rhythmic cooperation with the others. The soloists play in and against the group, asserting individuality whilst remaining in the community of the ensemble. Jazz is, after all, all about such paradoxes: individualism vs. collective accomplishment and tradition vs. innovation. These dissonances and paradoxes are not uncharacteristic of our way of life; perhaps one of the reasons why jazz has been so nostalgically discussed as the soundtrack to North America’s encounter with modernism. ‘Hear that chord!’, uttered composer Duke Ellington to an observation that his music was distinguished by a preoccupation with dissonance when one of his Cuban-influenced compositions was played. ‘Dissonance is our way of life in America. We are something apart, yet an integral part.’

Michel is a composer and pianist extraordinaire. He is a bandleader, lecturer, and visiting professor. He is a chart-topping producer; a Grammy, Latin Grammy and Emmy award winner. He is the recipient of his native countryís highest civilian honors.

Michel Camilo is all of these things and more, wrapped in a human being of boundless enthusiasm, musical passion, and love of life. The artistry and virtuosity of Michel Camilo bridges the genres of Jazz, Classical, Popular and World music. He is a pianist with a brilliant technique and a composer who flavors his tunes with the spice of Caribbean rhythms and jazz harmonies.

To see him perform live is to witness the energy of a tropical storm being unleashed on 88 keys. Academy Award-winning filmmaker Fernando Trueba, who featured Camilo in his documentary film Calle 54, says: Michel Camilo is one of the top all-around musicians. Whether it's jazz, classical, Latin American music or film music, Michel is in his element. Every time I see him play, I feel like I'm witnessing a miracle.
