  • Live with Carnegie Hall: Yannick Nézet-Séguin

    1:28:04

    An Afternoon at the Opera

The Metropolitan Opera is one of New York City’s oldest cultural institutions, predating the opening of Carnegie Hall by eight years. Since 1991, the opera’s famed instrumentalists have emerged from the orchestra pit to take center stage at the Hall during their annual concerts. Yannick Nézet-Séguin—only the third music director of the Met since its founding in 1883—discusses The MET Orchestra (as it’s known when it ventures outside the opera house) and its rich history on the concert stage. Nézet-Séguin also provides behind-the-scenes glimpses of the production process and speaks with a few of the opera house’s emerging stars.

  • #186: How to Grow Your Company by Tapping Into Local City Incentive Packages (Tax Breaks,

    1:14:17

Today’s episode will be especially poignant to you if you’re growing and looking at your struggling labor pool only to notice that you’re having a hard time retaining or bringing people on for decent pay. If you’re looking at bringing on some additional capital because we all know that growth is expensive. I’ll be talking with Justin Erickson (the owner of EsseX Capital) about I’ve realized that--more than “life after business”--this podcast is about being intentional and growing your business so you can have more options and more freedom in your journey. So my question is, if the name of the podcast changes from “Life After Business” to “Intentional Growth: How to Grow the Value of Your Business with an End in Mind”, would that throw you for a loop? The topics and content would still be the same, the only difference would be the title.Your opinion is so important to me. Please reach out to me if you have any questions or comments.  You can contact me via email at rtansom@arkona.com, on my LinkedIn, or you can call me at 612-720-6530.What you will learn:Justin’s background and businessWhat does EsseX Capital do?Where can you find an economic community director? The difference between companies like EsseX CapitalWhich companies should look at this option?Who are the best candidates for this? How does this process work?Where are the incentives coming from? Where have they been? What are most companies missing out on?What can EsseX Capital do for your company?Quotes:“I tell the company, ‘You don’t have to. I can do the legwork. I can find the options for you. And I can bring the communities to you, physically or otherwise.’” – Justin Erickson“It is fun to see the impact beyond, just engaging with companies, and clients and just getting a paycheck.” – Justin Erickson“It doesn’t matter what the size of the privately held company that wants to expand, (from labor or building or manufacturing or whatever), should think about this stuff.” – Ryan TansomTakeaway:Always ask. If you know what you want and you can go ask for it and you know who to ask, people like Justin, who know the strings to pull, look at the things that you can do. Another big takeaway is that knowledge is power. If you want more power, check out one of our two-day boot camps.Links and Resources:EsseX Capital, websiteJustin Erickson, LinkedInJustin Erickson, email: Justin@essexcapitalllc.netJustin Erickson, phone: 621-281-4648ARKONA Boot CampReach out to me if you have questions about the boot camp! You can also reach out to me via email at rtansom@arkona.com, on my LinkedIn, or you can call me at 612-720-6530.About Justin:Since 2006, Justin has worked on economic development projects throughout the continental U.S., helping companies determine where to locate operations based on their specific needs.  With a background in finance, coupled with experience working at Fortune 500 companies, a non-profit and private business, Justin is well-suited to work with clients, large and small, in identifying suitable locations for a project. An affiliated business, Community Venture Network ( has also given Justin an understanding of the motivations of state-based organizations, development agencies, and individual communities, giving him insight not only into the needs of company clients but also in understanding how the public side of these projects work. • Verdi: Aïda - San Francisco Opera

    2:43:01

    Buy from Amazon:

A magnificent spectacle of stars, scenery and choreography, this version of Verdi's Aïda is remastered from Sam Wanamaker's landmark production. It features monumental performances by Luciano Pavarotti as Radames and Margaret Price in the title role. The tensions which arise from Radames' love for Aida, a slave who is the daughter of the Ethiopian chieftain, Amonasro, and the jealousy this provokes in the daughter in Amneris, daughter of the Egyptian king, are portrayed in some of Verdi's most famous music.

★☆★ Below is the Psalm 91 KJV text used in this God's protection prayer video:
    Psalm 91:
He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the Lord, He is my refuge and my fortress: my God; in him will I trust.
Surely he shall deliver thee from the snare of the fowler, and from the noisome pestilence. He shall cover thee with his feathers, and under his wings shalt thou trust: his truth shall be thy shield and buckler.
Thou shalt not be afraid for the terror by night; nor for the arrow that flieth by day; Nor for the pestilence that walketh in darkness; nor for the destruction that wasteth at noonday. A thousand shall fall at thy side, and ten thousand at thy right hand; but it shall not come nigh thee.Only with thine eyes shalt thou behold and see the reward of the wicked.
Because thou hast made the Lord, which is my refuge, even the most High, thy habitation; There shall no evil befall thee, neither shall any plague come nigh thy dwelling. For he shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all thy ways. They shall bear thee up in their hands, lest thou dash thy foot against a stone.
Thou shalt tread upon the lion and adder: the young lion and the dragon shalt thou trample under feet. Because he hath set his love upon me, therefore will I deliver him: I will set him on high, because he hath known my name. He shall call upon me, and I will answer him: I will be with him in trouble; I will deliver him, and honour him. With long life will I satisfy him, and shew him my salvation.

    About the Band

    PERSONNEL

High Brow and The Shades founder, vocalist and drummer James Gutzman (Jimmy G.) has been a percussionist in the Twin Cities for over three decades and has played such high visibility national venues as House of Blues Chicago and House of Blues Orlando. He has experience as a jingle writer and voice-over personality, and was a stand up comedian for many years, a skill set he still utilizes as emcee for the band.

Guitarist and vocalist Ray Evangelista (Uncle Ray) has been featured on Minnesota Public Radio and in both the StarTribune and StPaul Pioneer Press. He toured for nearly a decade as a member of the USO Tour, and has played with The Platters, Prince, Little Anthony, The Imperials, Blood Sweat and Tears, Chaka Khan and many other A-list artists. Ray has had two Number One hits in the Philippines, one as a solo artist, and another as a member of New Nation. Ray was inducted into the Minnesota Music Hall of Fame in 2012.

Lead vocalist Adrienne Marie grew up in a musical family and was singing on stage by age seven. Natural aptitude, perseverance and formal training led her to be nominated, while still in her teens, to represent the Midwest as a gospel soloist overseas in Britain, Germany, Switzerland, Austria, Italy, and France. She worked with former Prince manager Gilbert Davison and has sung with Alex Ligerwood of Santana and Fergie Fredrickson of Toto. She connects with audiences on a personal level with her high energy stage persona.

Keyboardist and vocalist Michael Julian Jakubiec (Dr. J.) started his musical career in Los Angeles where he performed, recorded and co-owned a night club. He has toured the United States and played in more than half the states in the union, and as an instructor at Hovland Conservatory, imparts his extensive training in theory (jazz and classical), sight-reading, composition, improvisation and vocals to hundreds of students.

Bassist Dwight Sheridan (Mighty Dwight) brings decades of experience to the low end of the audio spectrum, including stints in successful bands dB Cooper and Rubber Soul, the Beatles tribute band where he filled the role of George Harrison.

    EXPOSURE

The band has performed over 1,000 shows since its formation in 1998.
The band members have performed at venues across the midwest including Famous Dave's BBQ, The Metropolitan, Mancini's Char House, Canterbury Downs, House of Blues in Chicago and Orlando, Olympic Hills, and dozens of others.

  • Rosa Raisa; Ernani, involami; ERNANI; Giuseppe Verdi

    2:36

    Rosa Raiza--soprano
    Date (?)
    ======================
Rosa Raisa (1893-1963) was born in Białystok, Poland as Raitza Burchstein. Because of the pogroms endemic in Russian controlled Poland during her childhood, her family fled to Italy when she was 14. Her vocal talent was soon recognized and she made her professional debut when she was 20. She sang at most of the world’s great opera houses with the notable exception of New York’s Metropolitan. The reason for her absence from this august company was doubtless the other Rosa – Rosa Ponselle. They were contemporaries, had the same vocal type, and shared much of the same repertory. There wasn’t room for both of them. Hence Raisa’s American career was made in Chicago.

Raisa is best known as the creator of the title role in Puccini’s Turandot in 1926. Arturo Toscanini chose her for the part as he had for that of Asteria in the world premier of Boito’s Nerone in 1924. Toscanini was not her only admirer. Enrico Caruso who had sung with her in London and Buenos Aires called her “the greatest dramatic soprano in the world.”

Her voice was renowned for both its power and agility. She did not make that many recording and from the ones she did make it’s hard to discern the large sized voice she was said to have. Her vocal agility is clearly heard on her recordings. The ease with which she handles florid passages is rare for a dramatic soprano who can sing Turandot and the big Verdi soprano parts.

D’amor sull’ali rosee is of course the supreme test for a Verdi soprano. This recording was made when Raisa was only 25. While it’s not up to the Zinka Milanov standard, neither was Zinka when she was 25. Using a measure fit to normal humans, it’s very good. The Miserere is also from the 4th act of Il Trovatore. This recording was made in 1923. The tenor is Armand Tokatyan. Tokatyan was a mainstay at the Met for more than 20 years. He sang 449 performances with the company.

In 1929 Raisa opened the new Chicago Civic Opera house in the title role of Aida. She was picked for the part by the company’s patron, industrialist Samuel Insull. She and her husband, baritone Giacomo Rimini, invested all their money in Insull’s securities and lost it all when he went broke during the depression. O patria mia opens the Nile Scene. The role was one of her most performed parts.

The Ave Maria from the last act of Verdi’s Otello shows the evenness of her vocal line and her ability to sing with restraint and control. The Bolero from Verdi’s I Vespiri Siciliani was recorded in 1920. It shows the singer’s mastery of fioratura which, as mentioned above, is so rare in a big soprano. Pace, pace mio dio is from the last act of La Forza del Destino. The aria sounds sharp. I suspect it was recorded at different speed from that at which it was put to disc.

Casta Diva ~ Ernani! involami ~ Un bel dì vedremo are presented in sequence. The first from Bellini’s Norma, the second from Verdi’s Ernani, and the last from Puccini’s Madama Butterfly. The selections show the soprano’s range and versatility. Another Puccini aria is Viss d’arte from Tosca. Beautifully sung even if the Italian is not idiomatic.

Here are two arias by Boito. The first with word and music by him L’altra notte from Mefistofele. The singing is excellent, though it lacks the Italianate passion needed to fully realize the piece. The second just has words by Boito. Suicidio is from the final act of Ponchielli’s La Gioconda.

La mamma morta is from the third act of Giordano’s Andrea Chenier. Finally, here two songs in Yiddish. The first of these ‘Eili, Eili’ was typically performed at the end of Raisa’s numerous recitals. Two Yiddish songs.

Raisa was clearly one of the great dramatic sopranos of the first part of the 20th century. Her memory may be fading, though she deserves to be remembered. Neil Kurtzman January 2015

This video was made for those wondering if can Really Get Paid to Put Ads on Your Car? But you may be wondering, aren’t there legitimate companies that pay you to put advertising on your car? ReferralCars is unlike any other vehicle advertising program in that we match drivers to commission-based campaigns.

So if you are looking for a ReferralCars review this may help you more than just some shitty review. It shows you how I ACTUALLY make money from them and that I DO get paid for it.

Now I don't necessarily get paid for the AD that is on my car, but I get paid for sharing the ReferralCars program. That in turn helps people make money and lets them share the advertiser they are promoting.

I've never called a number from the back of a car anyway. Everything I do is online. This is kind of merging real life with online perceptions as I feel like we are in a transition from depending more on online programs than shit we see in real life.

I would have Googled the program anyways, if I was actually interested.

Review of W. J. Henderson in The New York Sun

French opera does not occupy a conspicuous place in the repertory of the Metropolitan Opera House at the present, even though 'Carmen and Faust are persistent, and the music of Jules Massenet, except Manon, has rarely been heard at any time. The restoration to the active list Saturday afternoon of the work just named would have been a welcome incident in itself. Added interest was lent to it by the first appearance in the Metropolitan of Bidu Sayao, a soprano from Brazil. It was not Miss Sayao's debut; she sang in Debussy's Blessed Damosel with the Philharmonic under Toscanini last April without noteworthy result.

Her operatic debut was more to her credit. She has a light voice of sufficient power and range for the music of Manon, though in moments of stress her tones sometimes develop a shrillness which could be spared. But her singing in general showed musical quality and a knowledge of the style of the opera. Her impersonation of the unstable young woman, who came from the country to cut such a figure in the demimondaine circles of Paris, had a delicate, but defined charm, and a well planned delineation of the character. Nothing Miss Sayao did or sang was of impressive magnitude, but while drawn for small frame, her pretty picture immediately engaged the attention of the audience and held its interest till the fall of the final curtain. Accepting the standards now prevailing at the Metropolitan, this was a pleasing debut.

Rene Maison was to have sung the Chevalier des Grieux, but he was indisposed and his place was taken by Sydney Raynor, whose high tones were his principal gifts to the opera. Owing to his ability to deliver such tones with a certain hard brilliancy, he accomplished something toward an incisive projection of Ah, fuyez, douce image. Mr. Bonelli's Lescaut was well intentioned and had some of the swagger, traditionally associated with the part, but he did not create a very striking figure. Chase Baromeo accredited himself with a correct and dignified portrait of the elder des Grieux and a respectably sung solo in the St. Sulpice scene.

The minor roles were in charge of singers acquainted with their routine. The one which gained prominence before the rest was Mr. Bada's neatly drawn sketch of the ridiculous Guillot de Montfortaine, minister of finance. Possibly some day the opera may be mounted with new clothes and scenery, but for the present, perhaps by not being on exhibition too often, the trappings of an earlier day will suffice. Mr. de Abravenel's conducting was secure, but not an element of distinction in the revival.

Finally it may be confessed that a rehearing of Massenet's Manon was a pleasant experience for there is something charming in the urban polish of the melodious score and even in the rather naïve use of leading motifs. Those ever witty French! They called him Mlle Wagner for using them. But are they not pretty? One wonders, too, whether Massenet ever heard Mozart's C major Symphony (No 338 in the Koechel catalogue). His Lescaut seems to have been affected by it.
