  • Welsh Fiddle Tune - Tom Jones

    2:23

I learned this jig from my parents Jenny and Gil KilBride, who were both traditional musicians and great collectors of tunes. In their time they unearthed some gems from the archives at Wales' Folk Museum St Fagans. They were also great collectors of musicians too, which made for a lively and entertaining childhood, and sparked my interest in traditional music. It seems good company, good tunes, and good beer have made a lasting impression :-)

Tom Jones is often associated with the renowned Welsh rogue Twm Sion Cati (1530-1609) who got up to all manner of shenanikins in his day - too many to list (look him up in Wikipedia)

About - I was born, live and work in Wales, and for much of my adult life I have played the fiddle - traditional folk tunes from the Celtic nations. My parents played traditional music too, and growing up my brothers and I lived in a household of music and musicians. Whilst we youngsters strongly rebelled as teenagers (we even had a punk band), it seems that by musical osmosis the power of the trad won out! My brothers and I all play trad now, and over the past three decades have each individually and together been involved in numerous bands, recordings, performances, projects etc in Wales and throughout UK and abroad. As a fiddler from Wales I am often asked by other musos to play us a Welsh tune. Regrettably my repertoire of Welsh trad tunes was much-forgotten, and so this YouTube Channel is about rediscovering and reviving those tunes. These tunes have been handed down to me by my parents, my brothers, from recordings, sessions, and by some notable Welsh traditional musicians (credited in the video descriptions). I hope you enjoy my versions of them, and if so please learn them, play them to others, pass them on, and keep our tradition alive.

Take Five by Paul Desmond, Arranged by Abigail James
    ABRSM Grade 5 List C

Description from the book by Anthony Burton:

Take Five appeared on the 1959 LP record Time Out by the American jazz group the Dave Brubeck Quartet, and became a massive international hit. Brubeck composed most of the tracks on the album, using the unconventional time signatures for which he was renowned, but this piece in 5/4 was written by the Quartet's saxophonist Paul Desmond. Each bar is regularly divided into three plus two beats. As well as alluding to the metre, the title is a familiar instruction to musicians to take a five-minute break.

  • Welsh Fiddle Tune - Dic Y Cymro

    1:58

I learned this tune from West-Walian Peter Stacey way back when he was playing with (the most excellent and much-missed) Welsh band Aberjaber. Peter was the first real 'professional' musician I had met and, having worked together on a number of musical projects way back when, he taught me a great deal about musical composition and arrangements. Plus I nicked some of his tune sets - ho, ho!

  • Patriotic British Music from Gilbert and Sullivan

    34:37

Obviously, what can count as patriotic here is debatable, but these are, if anything, in parodic imitation of fervant love for that glorious country called Great Britain, to which some add, but others do not, Ireland.

    Songs are:
    1. A British Tar
    2. The Soldiers of our Queen
    3. If you want a receipt for that popular mystery
    4. Loudly let the trumpet bray!
    5. When Britain really ruled the waves
    6. We ship'd, d'you see
    7. When our gallant Norman foes
    8. My subjects all, it is your wish emphatic
    9. Ah, gallant soldier brave and true
    10. And lastly I present to you Great Britain's greatest boast
    11. Society has quite forsaken
    12. A wonderful joy our eyes to bless
    13. There's a little group of isle beyond the wave

  • Welsh Fiddle Tune - Y Cambro-Frython

    1:45

This is another Welsh tune that I learned from the playing of multi-instrumentalist Peter Stacey. It was in an old Aberjaber set he played with Dic y Cymro, recorded in the key of D. My brothers and I later recorded the same two tunes in the key of A - much nicer for the fiddle (oops my top A is bit out of tune in this one ;-)

About - I was born, live and work in Wales, and for much of my adult life I have played the fiddle - traditional folk tunes from the Celtic nations. • Ancient Celtic Folk Song Lyric Translation in description

    3:57

A ghaoil, leig dhachaigh gum mhàthair mi Love let me home to my mother performed by Julie Fowlis
Taken from Julie’s fourth studio album, this hypnotic and mysterious song tells the tale of a young girls’ encounter with the ‘each-uisge’ or water-horse.
Featuring award winning Scottish ensemble RANT, with strings arranged by flautist and composer Tom Doorley.

Love, let me home to my mother
Love, let me home to my mother
Darling, let me home to my mother

    Love, let me home
    to my mother
I only came for the cattle.
    It was only last night
That I heard that my love was herding
And though you found me at the perimeter of the cattle fold
Love, let me home as you found me.
    I was clambering up
    the dykes
    And descending the ridges
When a friendly lad met me
And he did not enforce his friendship on me.
Though you were to give me cattle and sheep
Though you were to give me tethered horses
Though you were to give me that and men
Love, let me home as you found me.
My mother and father will chastise you
My clan and my relatives will chastise you
But my three brothers will kill you
If I don’t return home as I came.
My mother promised me a gown
Decorated with the newest of ribbons
And she promised me a new plaid
If I return home the way you found me.

  • Titanic - Nearer My God To Thee

    5:41

Please enjoy this full version. This is the song the band played before the Titanic sank.

Sometime around 2.10 a.m. as the Titanic began settling more quickly into the icy North Altantic, the sounds of ragtime, familiar dance tunes and popular waltzes that had floated reassuringly across her decks suddenly stopped as Bandmaster Wallace Hartley tapped his bow against his violin. Hartley and his musicians, all wearing their lifebelts now, were standing back at the base of the second funnel, on the roof of the First Class Lounge, where they had been playing for the better part of an hour. There were a few moments of silence, then the solemn strains of the hymn Nearer My God to Thee began drifting across the water. It was with a perhaps unintended irony that Hartley chose a hymn that pleaded for the mercy of the Almighty, as the ultimate material conceit of the Edwardian Age, the ship that God Himself couldn't sink, foundered beneath his feet. As the band played, the slant of the deck grew steeper, while from within the hull came a rapidly increasing number of thuds, bangs and crashes as interior furnishings broke loose, walls and partitions collapsed--the Titanic was only moments from breaking apart.

I remember having a daydream about the opening acoustic guitar part of “All Along The Watchtower” ending with a Native American scream and a big native drum on the downbeat. That was the spark to assemble one of our biggest and deepest Songs Around The World. From Beirut to New Orleans to the Lakota Nation, musicians play and sing like a musical army determined to stop suffering and greed all over the world. As a society, we need to get back to our roots and connect deeper with our ancestors and native people in general so we can find the wisdom we need to move forward as a human race. As Jimi Hendrix once said, “If there is something to be changed in this world, then it can only happen through music.”

    In My Dreams
    Words & Music: Paul Mealor

As I lie here, at night,
As my eyes give-in to sleep,
As I dream of you, here in my arms,
    I'm holding you, loving you.

As you sleep there, my love,
As your eyes give-in to rest,
As you dream of me, there in your arms,
    I'm holding you, loving you.

In my dreams, you're in my arms,
In my dreams, my heart is holding you; Feeling you; loving you,
In my dreams, you're always there,
In my dreams our love will never die; always you; always love; In my dreams.

    All alone here, I lie,
    As the darkness falls around,
As I think of you, and your warm embrace; I'm home again; ever safe.

In my dreams, you're in my arms,
    In my dreams, my heart is holding you; Feeling you; loving you;

  • Small Town Therapy Performs “33” For Peghead Nation

    3:14

Small Town Therapy is the instrumental duo of Adam Roszkiewicz and Leif Karlstrom, who both play in the roots band Front Country and the Modern Mandolin Quartet. They released their second album, Dreams and Circumstances, earlier this year, and it is a great mix of progressive acoustic compositions featuring fiddle, mandolin, and acoustic guitar, with guest musicians John Mailander, Eli West, and others.

Adam and Leif stopped by the Peghead Nation studio while they were on a tour through Northern California and played a few tunes, including the fiddle and mandolin piece “33,” which they recorded on Dreams and Circumstances. It's a moving piece from two creative virtuosos.

  • Brian Head Welch of Korn re-dedicates his life to CHRIST

    4:29

(Originally provided to iCareNOW.tv by Mr. Ebenezar John Premkumar)

Brian Head Welch is from Bakersfield, California. At the tender age of 11, Head picked up a guitar and found his original calling. Barely out of high school, he helped found the controversial rock band Korn. The band became a grammy award winning, multi-platinum selling band, and quickly soared to the top of the music world while selling some 30 Million records internationally. The band was credited with being the major influence in the rise of the Nu Metal Movement. While with Korn, Head won two grammy awards and several MTV music video awards.

In February 2005, Head shocked the music world when he resigned from Korn to re-dedicate his life to Christ and focus on raising his daughter, Jennea, as a single father. The event set off a media frenzy as observers around the world sought out to understand what led this rock star out of the darkness and into the light.

Significantly, and perhaps most importantly, upon his resignation from Korn, Head made clear to the music world that he had not retired from the music and entertainment industry. With his newfound calling, Head is committed to changing the youth of this nation through his music and other entertainment ventures. In this regard, Head penned an autobiography of his life, picked up and released by Harper Collins Publishers in July 2007, entitled, Save Me From Myself. Head gained further acclaim as a successful author, when the book quickly hit the New York Times Best Seller List (non-fiction). In his memoir, Head talks for the first time about his shocking embrace of God, and the tumultuous decade of drug and alcohol addiction that led him to his faith, where he was completely and instantly healed of his addictions.

Heads debut album also entitled, Save Me From Myself, is a testimony of his life as he battled with drug and alcohol addiction, leaving KoRn, and finding spirituality. His debut album is a heavy metal epic, with a positive message. It will leave no doubt in everyones
mind that Head, as a founding member of KoRn, has not lost his passion for the metal sound that originally helped make his former band famous. The Debut Album is set for release September 09, and features renown musicians such as Tony Levin (Peter Gabriel, Alice Cooper, David Bowie), Josh Freese (A Perfect Circle, Evanescence, Nine Inch Nails). The first single, Flush, will be available exclusively on I-Tunes on July 8th. The album was mixed by Bob Clearmountain, Ralph Patlan, and Head himself.

  • Natalia Lafourcade: NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert

    15:20

Oct. 27, 2017 | Felix Contreras -- Natalia Lafourcade is a successful singer-songwriter whose voice and music live on the edge of pop, but maintain a distinct independence.

A few years ago, while Lafourcade was traveling Brazil, she felt a great nostalgia for her native Mexico and its folk music. When she finally returned home, she immediately called some friends for the kind of party that is ubiquitous in Latin America: lots of social drinking, lots of food and lots of guitars and singing. Classic folk songs were on the playlist and a good time was had by all.

Someone recorded the informal jam session and Lafourcade's management team heard the tapes. This is your next record! they told her.

That record, Musas: Un Homenaje al Folclore Latinoamericano en Manos de los Macorinos, Vol. 1, was a commercial and critical hit, and received a Latin Grammy nomination for Album of the Year. It only made sense for Lafourcade to bring her Musas tour to the Tiny Desk. The performances are an ode to a magical time in Mexican popular music, one that is revived with every note this singer and her band perform.

One important historical note: The two older gentlemen on the video are Juan Carlos Allende and Miguel Peña, two revered musicians who played with the iconic ranchera singer Chavela Vargas.

    Full Movie:

'All Modern Music Begins With The Velvets' -- Lester Bangs

When, in 1964, an in-house songwriter for the Pickwick label was introduced to the Welsh viola player from avant-garde composer La Monte Young's group, few predicted the profound effect this coming together would have on the development of global rock music. But before the year was out this unlikely couple had formed a band, hooked up with Pop -Art supremo Andy Warhol and, 12 months on, composed and were recording a collection of songs that many believe 'started it all'.

It was later claimed that The Velvet Underground and Nico - for this is the record in question - only sold 5,000 copies upon its release, but everyone who bought it went out and formed a band. Certainly David Johannsen, Richard Hell, Tom Verlaine, Alan Vega, Wayne County, most of The Ramones, half of Blondie, Patti Smith and David Byrne did - and the rest, as they say, is history.

This documentary film, clocking in at over 3 hours, traces the entire history of New York's punk movement; the VU years, the Warhol influence, the Dolls reign, and the handover of power to the bands who, despite their differences in sound, shared the sensibilities and attitude introduced to the city's musical landscape by Warhol and the Velvets a decade before. These were the groups and musicians who claimed the lower east side of the city as their playground and the former bluegrass club CBGBs as their HQ.

With the aid of performance footage, rare archive, exclusive interviews and some of the most exciting music ever recorded, this programme offers a visual experience of these events second only to having lived through them.

Features brand new interviews with Richard Hell & Richard Lloyd from Television, Suicide's Alan Vega, Gary Valentine from Blondie and Elda Gentile from Debbie Harry's previous band The Stilletos, The Voidoids' Ivan Julien, ex-Ramones manager Danny Fields, Warhol acolytes Jayne County and Leee Black Childers, scene photographer Roberta Bayley, writers Robert Christgau and Victor Bockris - both of whom witnessed events as they unfolded - plus Simon Reynolds and Tony Fletcher representing the British view, Patti Smith biographer Mark Paytress, and the man who recorded the New York sound in the 1970s, Craig Leon - producer of debut albums by The Ramones, Blondie and Suicide.

  • Spring - Fresh Maggots - UK Electric Folk 1971

    3:23

    Fresh Maggots - Spring

    1971

Mick Burgoyne - guitar, vocals, percussions, violin
Leigh Dolphin - acoustic guitar, vocals

Having released only one album in 1971, Fresh Maggots is a band that, like so many other UK folk acts, came and went quickly. That is not to say that their music wasnt worthy of a long, fruitful career — quite the contrary, actually. The band is just two people 19 year olds Mick Burgoyne and Leigh Dolphin from Nuneaton, Warwickshire, England. Mick plays electric guitar with remarkable virtuosity and adds to their sound, glockenspiel, tambourine, violin and two tin whistles in harmony. Leigh contributes his considerable talent on acoustic guitar and writes the music to match Micks lyrics. Hazy, Arthurian, and undeniably mature for two teenagers.

The album cover artwork is by the very brilliant Marcus Keef (Neon)

  • PGVAN#4: Bend Sinister

    8:06

If you take a random sample of 100 people you'll find all of them can sing (and 30 or so could put a Welsh choir to shame), at least 12 can play guitar, and one diamond in the rough can play a Wurlitzer like he was born doing it. That's what we were hoping anyway.
The story of PGI#4 goes back about four years to when we first came across Bend Sinister's album Stories of Brothers, Tales of Lovers. Exclaim mag called it possibly the most musically accomplished rock album by a Canadian artist this year. It's that good. And they're even better live.

In January (a few days before PGI#3) Rob Calder of Boompa Records (boompa.ca) put us in touch with the band and the wheels started turning. Despite their heavy schedule of tour commitments, moving their jam space and some minor brain surgery (true story), the guys started deconstructing a song and rebuilding it with roles for an extra hundred band members.

The guys wanted lots of guitars, percussion, big vocals and someone to play a Wurlitzer. When we sent out the invite for the event, there was a fair amount of finger crossing that the people who RSVP'd would be able to pull it off. We needn't have worried - especially as we had Watasun and Jeff Bryant in the crowd.

The venue was also a big score -- Zulu Records has been an intrinsic part of the music community here since 1981, and as soon as the doors shut at 6pm we went to task turning the place into a make-shift recording studio. Doors for the event opened 45 minutes later so we had to haul ass. Luckily we had a team of volunteers who killed it.

The song for the night, The Road Divided, wasn't written about a record shop, but it is layered in the nostalgia of small family-owned joints that got run over when the big box stores moved in nearby. In Vancouver, HMV has come and gone but Zulu Records is still standing proud after more than 30 years in business. You can take that as a single digit salute from Vancouver music lovers when it comes to buying tickets, vinyl, and CDs. We love local.

Speaking of local, this event's libations were provided by the good people at Main Street Pilsner. Not content with just donating the beer, the owners came down and handed out the bright red cans of miracle liquid, and by the end of the night we'd quaffed the lot.

As a non-musician the song sounded pretty complicated, so we built a 12'x8' map of all the parts and stuck it on the wall - Adam got the duty of pointing to each part as we went through the song. He originally wanted a big foam hand on a stick to aid in the pointing efforts, but the local dollar store didn't sell hands. They did have bright yellow stuffed platypus, which once attached to a pole is obviously the next best thing. So if anyone ever needs a semi-aquatic mammal with a stick up it's ass just drop us a note.

Special note: The band's new album Small Fame came out on July 10th, and the album launch party is at Venue on July 19th. Get tickets from Zulu. And on the night keep asking for Main Street Pilsner. They don't sell it at Venue, but they should.

    BIG THANKS:
Rob Hamilton of Side One (sideone.ca) - for lending us a truck full of sound gear, this really wouldn't have happened without him.
The Volunteers: Caley, Jamie, Michael, Duncan, Joyce, Corinne, Jeff, Kaleigh, Johanna, Joyce, Reid, Layla, Nick, Rebecca and if I've missed anyone please let me know asap!
