  • Welsh Fiddle Tune - Tom Jones

I learned this jig from my parents Jenny and Gil KilBride, who were both traditional musicians and great collectors of tunes. Mum played accordion and Dad fiddle. In their time they unearthed some gems from the archives at Wales' Folk Museum St Fagans. They were also great collectors of musicians too, and fab party hosts, which made for a lively and entertaining childhood, and sparked my interest in the world of traditional music. It seems good company, good tunes (and good beer) have made a lasting impression :-)

Aside from the super-sexy 70s pop idol (still going strong), the name Tom Jones is often associated with the renowned Welsh rogue Twm Sion Cati (1530-1609) who got up to all manner of shenanikins in his day - too many to list (look him up in Wikipedia).

About - I was born, live and work in Wales, and for much of my adult life I have played the fiddle - traditional folk tunes from the Celtic nations. My parents played traditional music too, and growing up my brothers and I lived in a household of music and musicians. Whilst we youngsters strongly rebelled as teenagers (we even had a punk band), it seems that by musical osmosis the power of the trad won out! My brothers and I all play trad now, and over the past three decades have each individually and together been involved in numerous bands, recordings, performances, projects etc in Wales and throughout UK and abroad. As a fiddler from Wales I am often asked by other musos to play us a Welsh tune. Regrettably my repertoire of Welsh trad tunes was much-forgotten, and so this YouTube Channel is about rediscovering and reviving those tunes. These tunes have been handed down to me by my parents, my brothers, from recordings, sessions, and by some notable Welsh traditional musicians (credited in the video descriptions). I hope you enjoy my versions of them, and if so please learn them, play them to others, pass them on, and keep our tradition alive.

  • Top 50 Greatest Songs 1960-1969

    Support this channel:

This is a re-upload of a video I made nearly 4 years ago, which was taken down some time ago. However, while the original video was only a top 30 countdown, I decided to go with 50 songs for this updated version.

My grandfather once told me that the 1960s were two different musical decades. The first half (approx. 1960-1963) drew a lot of similarities to the 1950s, with acts like Elvis Presley, Pat Boone, The Everly Brothers, and Connie Francis remaining popular. As most of us know, this all rapidly changed in the mid 60s with the British Invasion. The United States intervention in the Vietnam War saw a counterculture movement spread across the US and the UK. Suddenly there was a burst of color and psychedelia across the world, changing the music scene forever. To quote TsorT (my source for the song list) By the end of the decade music was a major industry.

The album featured many tracks which seem to have been built around jams / improvisations, and there is also a cover of 'Dyn Gwiail' by Fflaps.

For many years, Gruff's actual contribution to this album was a mystery, but apparently he has confirmed that he plays bass on 'Map Of Itch'.

  • YOURE A MEAN ONE, MR. GRINCH: Trombone Cover Featuring James Brownell

You're A Mean One, Mr. Grinch - Trombone Cover was arranged for trombone quartet, plus a featured solo trombone. The original Grinch music was written by Albert Hague. When we were thinking of Christmas tunes to do, this one was at the top of the list! This movie was a childhood favorite and we thought it would sound awesome to have the famous Grinch melody played on bass trombone, which Patrick Chappell brings to life in this video.
We wanted to feature our good friend and KILLER jazz trombone soloist James Brownell aka Brownie in this video. James plays in the 7th Fleet Band (US Navy) along with Patrick, and is one of the most amazing musicians we have ever met. It is always a pleasure to work with him and hear his musical talents. We love what he was able to add to this video - both as a musician, and a clown haha! Fun Fact - Brownie's kids were in this video as well, such talented little actors!
In addition to the trombone playing, we wanted to portray our own interpretation of what it means to be a Grinch. You can see us eat other peoples' food, be mean to children, and steal things. We also want to thank our friends Andrew, Gina and cute-little Ben McCormick for their cameos!
    Merry Christmas... OR NOT!

  • Edge of U2 @ TIFF press conference for Make It Loud

David Howell Evans (born 8 August 1961 in Barking, East London, UK), more widely known by his moniker The Edge, is a musician known best as the guitarist, keyboardist, and main backing vocalist for the Irish rock band U2. His distinctive electric guitar timbre and percussive style of playing, along with his innovative use of digital sound processing — delay in particular — have been instrumental in defining U2's unique sound. In 2003, Rolling Stone magazine named The Edge #24 on their list of The 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time.[1]

The Edge was born to Welsh parents Garvin and Gwenda Evans.[2] When he was a year old, his family moved to Malahide in County Dublin where The Edge attended St. Andrew's National School. The Edge received piano and guitar lessons and often performed with his brother Dik Evans before they both answered an advertisement posted by Larry Mullen, Jr. at their school, Mount Temple Comprehensive School, seeking musicians to form a band.[3] This band would go through several incarnations before emerging as U2 in March 1978 (Dik Evans left the band just before the name change[4]). U2 began performing in various venues in Ireland and eventually began developing a following. Their debut album, Boy, was released in 1980.

In 1981, leading up to the October tour, The Edge came very close to leaving U2 for religious reasons, but he was persuaded to stay.[3] During this period, he became involved with a group called Shalom Tigers, in which bandmates Bono and Larry Mullen Jr. were also involved.[5] Shortly after deciding to remain with the band, he wrote a piece of music that was to become Sunday Bloody Sunday.[3] The Edge married his secondary school girlfriend Aislinn O'Sullivan on 12 July 1983.[6] The couple had three daughters together: Hollie, in 1984, Arran, in 1985, and Blue Angel, in 1989.[5] The Edge and O'Sullivan separated in 1990 but could not divorce due to Irish law; divorce was legalised in 1995 and the couple legally divorced in 1996.[5]

During U2's groundbreaking Zoo TV Tour, The Edge met Morleigh Steinberg, a professional dancer and choreographer employed by the band. The couple began dating in 1993, and had their daughter, Sian, in 1997, and a son, Levi, in 1999.[5] Steinberg and The Edge were married on 22 June 2002.[5]

The Edge's hair started thinning in his early twenties, and as a result, he has worn hats or caps on stage, in photo shoots, and on album covers since The Joshua Tree album and tour. From the period of The Joshua Tree up until Achtung Baby and early Zoo TV, he had very long hair.[7][8] He now wears a toque at all times in public, and even wore one at his wedding to Steinberg in 2002. He has since made very few public appearances without a hat or cap, such as during the 1995 Pavarotti and Friends concert where he performed Miss Sarajevo and One with Bono. This cap has become part of his distinctive look. He has also been distinguished by wearing shirts with numbers during the Elevation Tour, and by a cowboy hat and handlebar mustache during the PopMart Tour. He is currently focusing his humanitarian efforts on Music Rising, a charity that provides musical instruments to those who lost instruments in Hurricane Katrina.

  • Andy Irvine & Dónal Lunnys Mozaik ~ Sulemans Kopanitsa

On Saturday 16 July 2005, Mozaik performed in Dolgellau (Wales, UK) during the yearly open-air festival called 'Sesiwn Fawr' ('the Big Session' in Welsh), which was also the first gig of Mozaik's very first UK & European tour (16 July-28 August). [Please press SHOW MORE].

Since its creation, Andy's band to die for had already toured in Australia (1 March-1 April 2002), the USA (19 March-11 April 2004) and Ireland (18 July-3 August 2004), but since I had been unable to travel to any of these earlier tours, I was determined not to miss this one!

Their set turned out to be very close to the track list of their first album, 'Live at the Powerhouse', including this great Macedonian (*) dance tune, 'Suleiman's Kopanitsa', which had also been recorded on Andy's 'East Wind' studio album in 1992, under the name of 'Dance of Suleiman'. Both these recordings were adapted from 'Sulejmanovo Oro', recorded in 1978 by the Dutch band Čalgija specialising in music from the Balkans and directed by Dutch ethnomusicologist Wouter Swets.

Unfortunately, the present video is of poor quality, because the crowd of 5,000 people was very noisy, the sound system howled with feedback, and the on-stage camera crew seemed quite determined to obstruct my view at random, thus causing me to have to shift my camera repeatedly in my attempts to film the band! {8-((

However, I decided to upload it anyway, because:

    1. there are (currently) very few videos on YouTube showing Mozaik in performance, which is a great pity;

    2. Dónal Lunny's bouzouki arrangement on this occasion is quite different from the live album recording and, I think, truly amazing and well worth listening to.

Above all, you can see that these outstanding musicians are really enjoying being together once again, and playing superb music!

I therefore hope that all you Mozaik fans out there will appreciate this great performance, even if the audio-visual quality of this video is quite inferior to the standard I would have liked...

For those of us learning this lovely tune: it's in Dmaj and the basic structure is made of 3 parts A/B/C, each played twice in succession; then this basic structure is repeated once, before a final A (x2) in Gmaj:

    0:07 - A (x2) in Dmaj.
    1:04 - B (x2)
    1:32 - C (x2)
    2:00 - A (x2)
    2:56 - B (x2)
    3:24 - C (x2)
    3:52 - A (x2) in Gmaj.

The 'kopanitsa' rhythm is in 11/8 time (2-2-3-2-2), with the accent on the first note of the triplet.

This piece is played using the standard violin and mandolin tuning of GDAE (although Andy plays his part tuned GDAD).

    Musicians (from left to right):
    Dónal Lunny - bouzouki
    Nikola Parov - gadulka, kaval
    Andy Irvine - mandola
    Bruce Molsky - fiddle
Rens van der Zalm - mandolin

    Good luck! ;-))
    With kind regards; @}--

  • DRINKS Laying Down Rock

Second single taken from “Hermits on Holiday”, the debut album by DRINKS, the new project from Cate Le Bon and Tim Presley aka White Fence. This digital single includes the non-album track I Could Loot You.

    available on

You’ve heard that one about the making of “Hold On, I’m Comin’ ”? The song was a major hit single in 1966 for soul singers Sam and Dave, and written by Isaac Hayes and David Porter at Stax Records in Memphis, Tennessee. As the story goes, Hayes was yelling at Porter to hurry up in the bathroom and get back to the studio—just take a moment and imagine Isaac Hayes telling you to get back to it in that well-deep reverberating bass voice of his—and Porter hollered back (you guessed it) “Hold on! I’m comin’!” And lo and behold.

A rented room in current-day downtown Los Angeles is a far cry from mid-sixties Memphis, but so it was for DRINKS, the newly formed duo of Cate Le Bon and Tim Presley (currently of White Fence, formerly of The Nerve Agents, Darker My Love, The Strange Boys, and, for a spell, The Fall), in the writing of “Laying Down Rock,” premiering here today off their forthcoming debut, Hermits On Holiday.

What to call themselves? “Oh, Cate came up with that amazing name,” Presley says drily over the phone from L.A., where the musicians are neighbors in Highland Park. Le Bon, equally deadpan, banters back: “Well, sometimes the band’s name is so cool and the music’s awful. So if we start with an awful name—”

Single: Laying Down Rock, Illustrated by Tim Presley of DRINKS
DRINKS was many months in the talking, but just a few fast weeks in the actual making. Both Le Bon, a singer-songwriter who performs in both English and her native Welsh, and Presley, a San Francisco hardcore punk turned lo-fi psychedelic musician, are prolific sorts with multiple solo records and recent-ish side projects (Cate: Manic Street Preachers, Kevin Morby; Tim: Ty Segall) under their belts and a lot of shared favorite records. At the top of that list is the Krautrock classic Faust’s IV. “It’s like a bible in a way,” Tim says. “It’s got perfect songs, the sonic quality, the chording, the mix of it, the playfulness, the seriousness. It’s got everything.” For DRINKS, they sought to find similar common ground. “We let go of any formula we may have had in our own separate entities,” he adds. “If it sounded too White Fence or too Cate Le Bon, that wasn’t the point of this group. This is a new band.”

Says Cate: “We’d just play guitar with each other. Either Tim started playing something that I liked very much, that excited me, and I’d tell him that and we’d work it from there, or vice versa. The rule was you weren’t allowed to bring a fully formed song into the studio. We wrote everything as a team.”

Such was the case even in the more offstage “Hold On, I’m Comin’ ”–esque moments, when a studio break of debatable length ended up producing a song in its entirety. “I was playing this riff, and Tim took forever, and I had to keep playing it for like 20 minutes so I didn’t forget it,” says Cate. “And then he walked in the room and just picked up an acoustic guitar and started singing.”

“And that’s it!” Tim says. “I came in, and we hit record, played the song, did the lyrics too. I mean, all I did was wash my hands.”

    “For ten minutes!” Cate corrects.

Tim: “But then I came back—”

Cate: “Ready to lay down the rock.”

Tim: “But that’s seriously, like, the song.”

  • All The Right Notes – A Collection of Memories || Music Documentary

‘All The Right Notes – A Collection of Memories’ is a short documentary that showcases my involvement with some great musicians and people over the last two years during my time at high school. It highlights some of our greatest achievements and our sense of togetherness as a band that dominated some major competitions. It includes our practice and jam sessions, and some unseen footage of me being my goofy self. These two years hold a special place in my heart, and I can’t wait for the next 4 years at college!

Personal journey as a musician -
Back in 2014, I'd almost completely given up on performing; obviously couldn't give up on music so I'd play some stuff in my room and just keep it to myself, thinking I'm never going to be good enough to make public appearances. That very summer I was asked to compose and write a song for an all India level competition, competing against 300 other schools, and I thought it's impossible anyway, but let's give it a shot. We cleared our Zonals and that's as far as I thought we'd go, but we actually went on to win with my song, lyrics and our band being awarded 'Song of the Year'. That acted as motivation for me to start going public with my acts again. I began uploading my music on Soundcloud once more and someone or the other was kind enough to appreciate it. Soon I was playing at school, jamming with some talented musicians and receiving a whole lot of love. Over the course of this past year I began doing less of what people wanted me to do, and more of what I enjoyed doing, making the acoustic mashup of 'Take Me To Church x Jiyein Kyun' and releasing the music I make at 3am at night, never to be heard by anyone, 'Whiskey Stained Lies' and 'Shades of purple'.

When I look at how far I've come from where my journey started as a 9 year old, reluctant to attend Indian Classical vocal training, or when I got my first guitar and some family members almost believed that it'll be a white elephant in the house and I'll never play it to owning 3 guitars now and still wanting more, and looking back to the newly turned teenager who was easily bored at guitar classes; it gives me immense happiness to see the kind of amazing friends and amazing support I have in form of you guys, and how I've managed to inspire some juniors and friends to take up music or simply pursue their interests.

As of now I still have miles and miles to go, till then I would really like for you all to continue this support, keep sharing my pages, all my music, with your friends, family, anyone at all in order to get me that exposure that I've worked really hard for.

Thank you so much once again, I love you guys.

Father of Men, in Whom Are One (Llangoedmor)

Text by: Henry C Shuttleworth 1850-1900
Tune: Llangoedmor, a Welsh hymn melody
    Source: Methodist 1939 Hymnal #

Here is my complete recording of the Methodist 1939 Hymnal:

    1. Father of men, in whom are one
    All humankind beneath Thy sun,
Stablish our work in Thee begun.
Except the house be built of Thee,
In vain the builder’s toil must be:
    O strengthen our infirmity.

    2. Man lives not for himself alone,
    In others’ good he finds his own;
Life’s worth in fellowship is known.
We, friends and comrades on life’s way,
Gather within these walls to pray:
    Bless Thou our fellowship today.

    3. O Christ, our Elder Brother, who
By serving man God’s will didst do,
Help us to serve our brethren, too.
Guide us to seek the things above,
The base to shun, the pure approve,
To live by Thy free law of love.

    4. In all our work, in all our play,
    Be with us, Lord, our Friend, our Stay;
Lead onward to the perfect day:
Then may we know, earth’s lesson o’er,
With comrades missed or gone before,
    Heav’n’s fellowship for evermore.

  • Sir Gawain and the Green Knight

    Early Music Missouri presents:
Sir Gawain & The Green Knight

“Gawain and the Green Knight” survives in an English manuscript from the middle of the 14th century. Its author remains unknown but was clearly familiar with the chivalric tradition as well as English, Welsh and Irish tales. Grounded in the legends of King Arthur and his Round Table, this tale takes place over the course a year, ranging from one winter holiday season to the next. The story recounts a quest of Sir Gawain, youngest of Arthur’s knights, instigated by a mysterious Green Knight, a shape-shifter and dangerous trickster with a morbid sense of humor and a razor-sharp axe.

The story’s original language was a variant of Middle English and so our story is a translation of sorts. But the translation cannot hide the power of the words and the author’s joy in playing with them. Alliteration abounds (sorry!) and descriptions of the court, the knights, the cold and more become visceral through the vivid language.

To support and enhance this Medieval tale, we have selected music from the same era: a rollicking estampie to open the show, Medieval English carols of the season, the popular round Sumer is icumin in and two masterpieces of the era, John Dunstaple’s O Rosa Bella and Lyonel Power’s Anima mea. Our musical ensemble features three voices and a supporting band of vielle (an early bowed instrument, forerunner of the viola da gamba), recorder and lute. Our production has neither costumes nor props, but we hope that the music serves as a set for our story, bringing to listeners the sounds of fourteenth-century England with spikey melodies, aching harmonic crunches and energetic rhythms.

This particular version of the story had its roots a theatre company based in St. Louis in the 1980s. Early in that decade, the harpsichordist and conductor Nicolas McGegan and the actor Hollis Huston, both faculty at Washington University in St. Louis, founded Holy Roman Repertory Company. Dedicated equally to theatre, music and history, the company presented performances based on historical themes. Texts were drawn from letters, diaries, chronicles, newspapers and memoirs while music appropriate to the period was sung and played by experts in historical repertoires. I performed in some of the earliest shows and, when Nic moved to San Francisco to lead the Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra, I took over his role as Music Director for HRRC.

Hollis and I shifted our focus only slightly and developed shows dedicated to specific events and figures, the stories supported by music from the time. We did Eleanor of Aquitaine, a show based on court chronicles and featuring troubadour music. We told the story of the Scottsboro Boys supported by the plaintive blues of Yank Rachell and Henry Townsend, whose earliest recordings in the 1920s barely predated that tragic story. Samuel Johnson, Mark Twain, Queen Elizabeth, Mary Chestnut, Abelard & Heloise, Countee Cullen, Sor Juana, Louis XIV, Wolftone, WWI doughboys and many others received the Holy Roman treatment.

Actors included many of St. Louis’s finest—Hollis, of course, but also John Grasilli, Ron Himes, Susie Wall, Joneal Joplin, Patton Hasegawa, Chris Limber, Agnes Wilcox and so many others. The musicians came from across this country and Europe—Nic McGegan, certainly but also countertenor Drew Minter; local sopranos Christine Armistead and Linda Blumenthal; bluesmen Yank Rachell and Henry Townsend; Irish traditional musicians Joe Burke, Terry Corcoran and Michael Cooney; local multi-instrumentalist and singer Marsha Curtis Hussung; viola da gambists Mary Springfels and Wendy Gillespie; harpsichordist Byron Shenkman and baroque flautist Kim Pineda. The list could go on.

And our sounds were not limited to our live performances. In partnership with our local NPR station, Hollis and I reached beyond our historical moment and, as our tongue-in-cheek on-air intro suggested, into the radio ether of history’s sound. With the support of figures like Lorin Cuoco and Rainer Steinhoff and the technical expertise of recording engineers Barry Hufker and Mary Edwards, all working at KWMU, HRRC’s shows were recorded and heard across the country.

Hollis created the script that became The Green Knight in 1987. I added period music and together we trimmed, rewrote and polished the show. It played at The Sheldon in December 1987 and was recorded for broadcast by Barry Hufker, Mary Edwards and their team from KWMU. Hollis and I did a one-off “revival” of the show just outside New York City about ten years later, after he had left St. Louis and settled on the east coast.

I revised Hollis’s 1997 script a bit for this new production but the bones of the show remain from our initial 1987 effort. Hollis passed away in 2018 as did Marsha Curtis Hussung, one of the musicians who helped us present that first show. We dedicated this performance to their memory.

    Audio by Barry Hufker.
    Video by Pat Weaver.

  • Brian Head Welch of Korn re-dedicates his life to CHRIST

(Originally provided to by Mr. Ebenezar John Premkumar)

Brian Head Welch is from Bakersfield, California. At the tender age of 11, Head picked up a guitar and found his original calling. Barely out of high school, he helped found the controversial rock band Korn. The band became a grammy award winning, multi-platinum selling band, and quickly soared to the top of the music world while selling some 30 Million records internationally. The band was credited with being the major influence in the rise of the Nu Metal Movement. While with Korn, Head won two grammy awards and several MTV music video awards.

In February 2005, Head shocked the music world when he resigned from Korn to re-dedicate his life to Christ and focus on raising his daughter, Jennea, as a single father. The event set off a media frenzy as observers around the world sought out to understand what led this rock star out of the darkness and into the light.

Significantly, and perhaps most importantly, upon his resignation from Korn, Head made clear to the music world that he had not retired from the music and entertainment industry. With his newfound calling, Head is committed to changing the youth of this nation through his music and other entertainment ventures. In this regard, Head penned an autobiography of his life, picked up and released by Harper Collins Publishers in July 2007, entitled, Save Me From Myself. Head gained further acclaim as a successful author, when the book quickly hit the New York Times Best Seller List (non-fiction). In his memoir, Head talks for the first time about his shocking embrace of God, and the tumultuous decade of drug and alcohol addiction that led him to his faith, where he was completely and instantly healed of his addictions.

Heads debut album also entitled, Save Me From Myself, is a testimony of his life as he battled with drug and alcohol addiction, leaving KoRn, and finding spirituality. His debut album is a heavy metal epic, with a positive message. It will leave no doubt in everyones
mind that Head, as a founding member of KoRn, has not lost his passion for the metal sound that originally helped make his former band famous. The Debut Album is set for release September 09, and features renown musicians such as Tony Levin (Peter Gabriel, Alice Cooper, David Bowie), Josh Freese (A Perfect Circle, Evanescence, Nine Inch Nails). The first single, Flush, will be available exclusively on I-Tunes on July 8th. The album was mixed by Bob Clearmountain, Ralph Patlan, and Head himself.

  • FOURTH CIRCLE - Elements

    Get Elements now on:

FOURTH CIRCLE - ELEMENTS (Release on october 28th. 2016)

All good things come in threes? Far from it! Welcome to the FOURTH CIRCLE, where epic Tunes encounter hard Riffs, and where the charming voice of Audrey Adornato is carrying the ears and hearts of their fans from the third to the fourth dimension.

The members of FOURTH CIRCLE from the French Hayange have, since their foundation in 2011, developed a musical style that always was bound to their strong influences of Symphonic Metal, yet breaking the bonds of the genre, by thinking outside of the box.

The glorious new album of FOURTH CIRCLE is named “Elements” and therefore is again taking account of the magical number “four”. Since where fire, water, air and earth interact a wholly new world of massive orchestral sound is about to emerge. But if you try to reduce the band from France to some numerological games you surely do wrong. It needs more than four qualities to confidently follow the footsteps of Bands like NIGHTWISH, WITHIN TEMPTATION, EPICA and more.

Love and affinity towards symphonic Sounds, lifeblood, imaginativeness and much more has to be mentioned to handle such a task. And yet, the five musicians from France undeterredly follow that path, while they are firing a salvo of 13 powerful tracks consisting of guitar-riffs meeting skincrawling orchestral elements.

FOURTH CIRCLE are integrating themselves seamlessly into the force of nature of symphonic metal. So, who doesn’t miss to listen to “Elements”, will surely find more than four enrichments for his personal favourite-list.

  • Marche Militaire La Ronde

Thine In Glory (an Echo fanfare) and Marche Militaire La Ronde (Gounod) is performed by the Household Cavalry Trumpeters (2 separate and opposing teams from the Life Guards and Blues and Royals) and the Band of The Household Division comprising musicians drawn from the Bands of The Life Guards, Blues and Royals, Grenadier Guards, Coldstream Guards, Scots Guards, Irish Guards, and Welsh Guards.

This performance was given at the Scarlet and Gold Concert in Westminster Central Hall, London, in November 2012. The music is conducted by Major Paul Wilman (Director of Music of The Band of The Life Guards).

Points of interest: Echo Fanfares are used in the British State Ceremonial Arena during State Visits for State Banquets hosted by the Lord Mayor of London at the Guildhall. They are used to herald speeches and various other ceremonies that are carried out and are unique to those occasions.

It is also interesting to note the 2 differing styles that the Household Cavalry Trumpeters adopt when playing their instruments. The Life Guards Trumpeters place their mouth pieces under the chin strap whilst the Blues and Royals place theirs over the top.
