    DESCRIPTION

Azerbaijan: A Timeless Presence is a tribute, woven of mystical poetry and music arising from the depths of memory, to a land whose spirit stands outside of time. The music was composed, arranged and directed by Sami Yusuf for the Opening Ceremony of the 43rd Session of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee in Baku in June 2019. With fifty-seven highly skilled musicians under his direction, Sami Yusuf makes full use of the complex musical language of traditional modal systems to create a narrative in sound. The album features traditional instruments including the tar, the kamancha, and the haunting sound of the balaban. Running through every piece is a thread connecting past to present to future. In honouring the rich legacy of Azerbaijan, the composer celebrates all those traditions that still find their visionary expression in the unique artistic languages of the peoples who embody them.

    1:00

Rubab, robab or rabab (Pashto: رباب‎, Urdu: رباب‎, Azerbaijani: Rübab, Turkish: Rübab, Persian: رُباب‎ rubāb, Tajik and Uzbek рубоб) is a lute-like musical instrument originating from central Afghanistan.

It derives its name from the Arab rebab which means played with a bow but in Central Asia the instrument is plucked and is distinctly different in construction.

The rubab is mainly used by Pashtun, Tajik, Turkish, Kashmiri, Baluch, Azerbaijani, and Iranian Kurdish classical musicians. Rubab is one of the national musical instruments of Afghanistan.

  • Ismaili Ginan in Farsi by Shakeela Parveen & Shaukat Ali | Music by Naveed

    5:29

    Ismaili Farsi Ginan

Sung by Shakeela Parveen & Shaukat Ali | Music by Naveed
Produced by : Black Lite Studio Lahore
    .
Ginans (Urdu: گنان‎, Gujarati: ગિનાન; derived from Sanskrit: ज्ञान Gnana) are devotional hymns or poems recited by Shia Ismaili Muslims.

It was originally an oral rendition mostly by Pirs, first among whom to come to South Asia was Pir Satgurnoor in the 12th century. Ginans are composed in many languages of South Asia, especially Gujarati, Urdu, Punjabi, Sindhi and many more. They are based on Verses from the Quran. Like Ginans, Qaseedas are recited in Arabic, Persian or Tajik by Ismailis in Central Asia, Iran and Syria. Ismailis from the subcontinent recite these as well as Arabic and Persian qusidas which are recited before or after the prayer in the Jamatkhana. Ginan Central[1] is a web portal developed at the University of Saskatchewan Library to safeguard ginans and promote research and education.

Ginans are devotional hymns recited by the Nizari Ismaili communities in South Asia. The recitation of ginans is not restricted to just Nizari Ismailis evidenced by the recitation of ginans by many established non-Nizari Ismaili singers such as Abida Parveen who recited the ginan Ya Ali Khub Majalis in the presence of the 49th present and living Imam of the Nizari Ismailis, His Highness Prince Aga Khan IV,[2] the accessibility to view current transcripts and translations of ginans, and the academic literature written on ginans which is made accessible to the larger public.

Although ginans can be recited, studied, and listened to by non-Nizari Ismailis, ginans hold a special role in the cultural practice and rituals of Nizari Ismailis, specifically the community of Khojas, a caste of south asians of whom the majority now identify as Nizari Ismaili. The Khojas, contextualized by the history of these Ismaili Pirs and Sayyids, came to follow the Satpanthi tradition; Satpanthi means the “true path”.

Coke Studio Season 10| Episode 2
An original folk-centric number, Tinak Dhin depicts the rhythm of the life, both lyrically and musically. Ali Hamza’s debut as a music director on Coke Studio proves to be an audio-visual feast as we see a power trio take the stage. The energy of three unique voices comes together in a confluence of energy; Hamza’s smoky voice, Sethi’s charming finesse and Ehsin’s textured versatility merge upon the playful, low-ends of the kanjira, upbeat mandolin and crisp sitar to create an exciting score for the hopeful.

  • Mohammad Reza Shajarian: NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert

    15:15

Every Tiny Desk Concert provides its own particular thrill, but it's not every day that we get to welcome one of NPR's 50 Great Voices to our offices. With the visit of the incredible, honey-voiced Mohammad Reza Shajarian from Iran, we lucked out by having him sing on not just any day, but on the biggest holiday of the Persian calendar: Nowruz, the New Year.

Joined by three excellent collaborators, brothers Sohrab and Tahmoures Pournazeri (celebrated musicians in their own right as leaders of Iran's Shams Ensemble) and French percussionist Robin Vassy, Ostad (Master) Shajarian gave what amounted to a brief master class in the art of singing. In the course of this love song, titled Az Eshgh, Shajarian unleashed torrents of swooping, soaring, goosebump-inducing sound — still perfectly controlled at age 73.

Over the past several years, Shajarian has emerged as a strong voice in other ways. Though he's been an artistic icon for decades at home, he was never particularly outspoken on political issues. But since the Green movement began in Iran in the wake of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's reelection in June 2009, Shajarian has openly made reference to supporting the opposition, and has demanded that state-run media stop using his songs in their broadcasts and films. Those moves carry a heavy cost: He has been effectively barred from performing live in Iran, and instead now spends most of his time touring the world to diaspora and non-Iranian audiences alike. But at his heart, Shajarian is a great artist, not a politician — and perhaps now, even more will have the chance to experience his brilliant beauty and power as a singer. -- ANASTASIA TSIOULCAS

    Our site is
The film is devoted to the meeting of two cultures -- Tajik and Uzbek -- in the Pejikent district of Tajikistan near the border of Uzbekistan. Cultures of both peoples are quite different and the history of their relationship is full of conflicts. The other made an attempt to show folk part of culture of these peoples -- their music is so similar and full of common values and life expiriencces. Rural musicians -- Tajik and Uzbek -- sing their songs, and after that meet to sing together.

The name rabaab, (also spelt rubab or rebab) can refer to several roughly similar string instruments. The rabaab is a leading instrument in the music of the Arabs and is played all over the Middle East and North Africa. It gets its name from the Arabic word which means “played with a bow” and, confusingly, often also serves as a generic terms for any string instrument played with a bow. But the rabaab played in central Asia, where the instrument is the mainstay of Pashtun, Tajik, Turkish, Kashmiri, Baluch and Iranian Kurdish classical musicians, is always plucked rather than played with a bow and often has an entirely different construction to the one played in Arab countries.

References to the rabaab begin to appear in Persian writings from around the 7th Century onwards and, in later years, notably in the works of Persian Sufi (Islamic mystic) poets. The rabaab also appears to have exercised a very considerable influence on the history of stringed instruments in Europe, and is thought by many to have been the means through which the bow was introduced to the West, with some musicologists suggesting that it was a direct antecedent of the violin.

A short-necked lute carved out of a single piece of wood, the rabaab is known as the “lion of instruments” in Afghanistan where it is one of two principal instruments that form a major component of Afghan classical music and, outside of the country, it is often referred to as the “Kabuli rabaab” (also widely acknowledged as the parent of the Indian sarod) to distinguish it from other versions of the instrument notably the one played in North India. (But while the Kabuli rabaab was always fretted its descendant, the sarod, is unfretted.)

The rabaab was at its zenith during the 16th Century and also beginning to appear in recitals of North Indian classical music alongside the ancient rudra bin (veena). Some historians believe that it lost its position in classical music from about the end of the 18th Century because of the eventual emergence of the sarod, an unfretted lute which evolved out of the Afghani or Kabuli rabaab and, being considered much more suitable for the Indian classical repertoire, soon became one of the top string instruments of North India. But it is more likely that the senia rabaab lost out eventually to the sursringar, (a composite instrument combining veena and rabaab) which appeared in the very early years of the 19th Century and had been designed specifically to overcome some of the limitations of the rabaab, particularly in the slow, alap (pulse-free introduction) sections of a raag recital. Many former rabaabiyas (exponents of rabaab) took up the sursringar and it was equally well received by classical music audiences.

Considered to be quite close to the human voice and hence quite suitable as accompaniment for devotional songs, the instrument gradually came to be associated only with the Sikhs of the Punjab region of India. The rabaab remained a staple of Gurmat Sangeet, (Sikh Devotional Music) until about the early 20th Century after which it started to become rarer with the harmonium taking its place as the preferred melodic accompaniment for this kind of music. Currently there are several efforts to revive the tradition, notably by the Namdhari sect of Sikhs.

LOVE IS THE ONLY RIVER – TRINITY & IAN SLOANE

    Verse 1
We are one love one race
We all come from the same place
We all live in this world together
    It doesn’t matter who’s right
    It doesn’t matter who’s wrong
If we don’t all get along much better
    Show each other more respect
    Then maybe we could connect
And stop taking all these things for granted
You think that you’re all alone
But we all share the same home
Let’s join together and save the planet
    Pre-Chorus
    If you love the world
    It’ll love you back
    No matter who are you
    No matter where you’re at
    If you love the world
    It’ll love you back
    No matter who are you
    No matter where you’re at
    Chorus
    Love is the only river
    Holding the world together
    Love is the only river
    We’re all in this together
    Verse 2
We are the ones who can change
We all are one and the same
We are the ones who can turn the tide
    Doesn’t matter who we are
Cause hand in hand we’ll go far
Let’s get together and show our pride
And if we all do our part
A new era we can start
Never forget that you’re not alone
We’re taking the world by storm
We’re proud of how we were born
One love is all you need
One love is all you need

    Pre-Chorus
    Chorus
    Bridge
    Peace and unity
