  • Folk Wind Instruments in Sweden - Scandi Folk Nerd #12

    19:58

Presenting the wind instruments used in the swedish folk music scene. Including historical background, research and revival stories, names of famous players and makers. This list is not supposed to be exhaustive, although I have tried to be as complete as possible without exceeding 20 minutes.

Sorry for the sharp cuts, I'm still learning how to edit videos. Also sorry for the two black screens in the middle-end of the video, these were supposed to be images but my video editing program just... refused to put them in, apparently. Here are links to the two images in question :

Release is the second album from Elskavon, the ambient moniker of Minneapolis composer Chris Bartels. This collection of songs continues on the path where the late 2012 debut album Movements In Season ended, with large, lush atmospheres and open textures.

Ambient music has always been able to create opportunities for listeners to interpret emotions in a variety of ways, and any one song can mean something so different from one set of ears to the next. For Chris, inspiration for these songs arrives in a similar fashion. It comes from all sorts of angles - love and friendship, hope and doubt, life and death.

Residents of Minnesota know the drastic difference of the four calendar seasons all too well. Summer in the land of 10,000 lakes is overwhelmingly beautiful, while winter is, to say the least, frigid. While certainly bound to be diverse in interpretation, Release was originally inspired by the many Minnesota winters Chris has experienced. It is the first of a double album. A 'spring' version will follow, after a predictably chilled few months.

The album opens with the expansive, airy four-and-a-half minute crescendo titled We Can All Be New. The listener is encouraged to become lost in the grand calm of spacious vocals, guitars, and sampled atmospheres. This leads to an immediate transition with the second track, Small Hands, which was written in anticipation of Chris' and his wife's first child, who will join them in the spring. The simple piano piece is reminiscent of any number of calming neo-classical songs or minimalist film scores.

Soundtrack Released For Swedish Style: The Musical, Inspired By The Behind-The-Scenes Split Of Super Group ABBA

Full-Length Rock Musical Available For Commercial Theater Groups & Schools

No mention of timeless pop music would be complete without Swedish pop super group ABBA at the top of the list. For a decade starting in 1972, the quartet released eight studio albums and a staggering 73 hit singles. In all, Benny, Björn, Frida and Agnetha have sold more than 370 million albums around the world.

But all good things come to an end, and ABBA's demise was sullied with divorce between the two couples, internal strife and ultimately, dissolution.

This is the story that inspired full-length rock musical Swedish Style, written by Turkish composer/producer and NYU Tisch School of the Arts Master's grad Ayhan Sahin. Selcen Pamuk, equally accomplished as a university professor with a PhD and Master's in Business, wrote lyrics.

The dramatized theatrical production—set in the early 1980s and rapt with love, loss, friendship, heartbreak and the penance of ultimate artistic immortality—illustrates the saga of beloved pop group Opus 10's demise, following the break-up of the quartet's two couples. Manager Anna pleads with members Reno, Rita, Kurt and Katherine to deliver a final album that propels them beyond their bubble gum legacy and insures legendary status in the pop pantheon. Ultimately, the group's primary nemesis turns out to be staring them in the mirror, as they strive to conjure their original magic one more time and achieve immortality.

Swedish Style was originally staged in the mid-1990s at the Operetta House in Sahin's native Ankara, Turkey, with subsequent performances in Copenhagen; Reykjavik, Iceland; and a symphonic version staged in Istanbul by the acclaimed Presidential Symphony Orchestra. In addition, Swedish Style was honored via an alliance of the Swedish-Turkish Cultural Cooperation during Stockholm 98's Cultural City of Europe campaign. The ensemble featured a cast of 45 performers/musicians and 25 offstage contributors.

The success of Swedish Style also led to a personal invitation by the Swedish Ambassador in Turkey, then, Michael Sahlin for Sahin to fly to Sweden for a rendezvous with ABBA founders Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus to strengthen musical and cultural cooperation between Sweden and Turkey. Within the past decade, the musical has also been showcased on VH1 in the U.S. and in a one-hour special on Turkish National Radio.

Now based in New York, Sahin has revised and refashioned Swedish Style: The Musical for licensing by commercial theatrical groups and schools. The concept album for the musical comprises a full-cast vocal production featuring five principal singers and an eight-member ensemble mastered for use in licensed productions of the show. The 12-piece band offers a robust palette of keyboards and piano; electric, classical, flamenco and acoustic guitars; percussion, bass, violin, cello, flute and sax.

A video vignette was also filmed by Christopher Holmes/Holmeswood Features Entertainment in December 2011 that provides a compelling sketch of the new production and its soundtrack recording. The five-minute promotional trailer offers potential production companies a snapshot of the cast in action, detailing elements of the script, choreography, set and costumes.
    (

Of course, the inspiration for Swedish Style: The Musical remains as vital today as it was 30 years ago. ABBA has indeed become immortal, thanks to the ongoing success of Broadway sensation Mamma Mia! and the accompanying 2008 film starring Meryl Streep, along with the group's 2010 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction.

Now, adding to the legacy, Swedish Style: The Musical offers, for the first time, the captivating tale of a lesser-known—but all-important—chapter in the group's fabled history. It is through death a legend is born, is a pivotal line in the production. Through this theatrical dramatization, the legend lives on.

  • Popular famous romantic classical music by the composer Max Bruch

    5:49

The First Violin Concerto by Max Bruch (1838-1920) has rightly become one of the most famous pieces of Romantic music. Its lovely, arching melodies, its sumptuous harmonies and its virtuosic charm made it an instant hit, and audiences have never stopped loving it. But Bruch wrote much more that should be just as popular. His Kol nidrei, here recorded for the first time in the composers own arrangement for violin and orchestra, is a gorgeous elaboration of Jewish themes that Bruch knew from his time as a choral conductor in Berlin. His interest in the music of other cultures also resulted in his Serenade on Swedish Melodies. This, along with the Romance for Viola and orchestra, may have been among his very last works, but they prove that Bruch never lost the melodic freshness of his youth. The listener can here also appreciate a work from the very beginning of Bruchs career, the bubbling, intensely melodious Overture to the opera Scherz, List und Rache op. 1, in a first-ever recording with orchestra. With Alexandre da Costa (violin), Orchestre Symphonique Bienne, Thomas Rösner (conductor), Gilad Karni (viola)

  • Famous Swedish Songs - Karaoke by Samuel Eriksson German audio

    9:27

This video was primarily made for Michael Fessl and his students in Austria, therefore I speak (mediocre) German in the video. Michael is a teacher in Austria that came to Sweden on a visit in November 2018. He participated during our German lessons and gave us the task to produce informative videos about Sweden. One can debate how informative this video really is, but hopefully, it's amusing to some people. The video is a smorgasbord of Swedish music gems as well as an Austrian gem performed and edited by no one else than me, Samuel Eriksson, and filmed by my brother Elias Eriksson.

IMPORTANT! I do not own any of the music in this video, the songs rightfully belong to their respective owners. The video's purpose is non-commercial, my intention is to educate and entertain. Here's a list of the songs being used (chronological order):

    Loreen - Euphoria
    ABBA - Waterloo
    Herreys - Diggiloo Diggiley
Tommy Körberg - Stad i Ljus
Conchita Wurst - Rise Lika a Phoenix

  • Johan Helmich Roman - Assaggio No. 1 BeRI 301 for violin solo

    13:55

Johan Helmich Roman (26 October 1694 – 20 November 1758) was a Swedish Baroque composer. He has been called the father of Swedish music or the Swedish Handel. He was the leader of Swedish Opera through most of Swedish Opera's Age of Liberty.

    From Assagi for violin solo

    No. 1 in A Major

    Jaap Schroder, violin

Roman was born in Stockholm into the family of Johan Roman, a member of the Swedish royal chapel. The family name Roman may be derived from the Finnish place name Rauma, since Johan's ancestors lived in Finland. The boy probably received his first music lessons from his father. He joined the royal chapel in 1711 as violinist and oboist. Around 1715 the King granted Roman permission to study abroad, and the young composer spent some six years in London. He almost certainly studied under Johann Christoph Pepusch, met Francesco Geminiani, Giovanni Bononcini, and, most importantly, George Frideric Handel, whose music made a lasting impression on Roman.

Roman returned to Sweden in 1721. He was soon appointed deputy master of the royal chapel, and six years later he became Chief Master of the Swedish Royal Orchestra. Roman's life during the 1720s was full of organisational activity which led to much improved standards at the chapel, and, in 1731, the first public concerts in Sweden. Roman's only work published during his lifetime, a collection of 12 sonatas for flute, violone and harpsichord, appeared in 1727. In 1730 Roman married, but his wife died just four years later. In 1734 the composer left Sweden to visit several European countries—Austria, England, France, Germany, and Italy. He returned to Stockholm in 1737, bringing back a wealth of music by various composers for the royal chapel to perform. In 1738 Roman married again. In 1740 he was elected a member of the newly established Royal Academy of Sciences.

Roman's successful career took a turn for the worse in early 1740s. The composer's greatest patron, Queen Ulrika Eleonora of Sweden, died in late 1741. In 1742 Roman's activity was greatly hindered by health problems. In 1744 Roman composed one of his finest works, Drottningholmsmusique: a large orchestral suite for the wedding of the Crown Prince Adolf Frederick of Sweden and Louisa Ulrika of Prussia. Ironically, it was due to Adolf Frederick's and Louisa Ulrika's efforts that Roman's career suffered. The new crown princess had different tastes in music, and her husband set up a very strong competing chapel. Finally, Roman's second wife Maria Elisabeth Baumgardt died in 1744, leaving the composer with five children.

In 1745 Roman retired from his post as leader of the royal chapel due to deafness, which had progressed rapidly during the previous years. He settled in the parish of Ryssby, on the estate Lilla Haraldsmåla, near the city of Kalmar in south-east Sweden. Apart from a single visit to Stockholm in 1751–52 to direct the funeral and coronation music on the accession of Adolph Frederik, Roman's last years were dedicated to translating European theoretical treatises into Swedish, and adaptation of sacred texts into Swedish language. He died at Haraldsmåla in 1758. His work has never been forgotten, for already nine years after his death the Royal Academy of Sciences held a commemorative ceremony, where Roman's achievements were documented; copies of Roman's works are found in manuscripts from as late as 1810.

  • Tom and Jerry at MGM - music performed live by the John Wilson Orchestra - 2013 BBC Proms

    6:36

A medley of the well-known energetic music by composer Scott Bradley from the 1940's and 1950's Tom and Jerry cartoons. Wonderfully performed live by the John Wilson Orchestra at the 2013 BBC Proms in the Royal Albert Hall in London. Arranged by Peter Morris and John Wilson.

Pete Morris, who worked on the arrangement with John Wilson, on 4 September wrote the following in response to questions about this video: we wanted to create a score that wasn't too fragmented and that didn't rely on visuals so the music you hear is a compilation of some of the best bits of Scott Bradley's music. There is no single video for the music - it comes from eight different cartoons: Smitten Kitten, Sufferin' Cats, The Framed Cat, Cat Fishin' Just Ducky, Jerry and Jumbo, The Cat Comes to Dinner and Mouse for Sale.

On 8 september Pete Morris added: John is a dab hand at reconstructing scores from audio. Check his Wiki page for info. In this case, however, we used score fragments, archives and a lot of patience. I used FCP to extract candidate snippets of video and linked them to create a 3 candidate narratives which John and I then worked on. Copyright is a nightmare (MGM, Warner, Sony, Turner, EMI have all owned bits in the past) - only JW has the clout to cut though that quagmire. Scores are as rare as hens' teeth.

On 16 September Pete added: Bradley's original scores were played by typically 20 to 25 musos. In fact, if you look at the beginning of the performance there are only 3 violins, 1 viola, 1 cello and 1 bass, to start with the original MGM sound. However, more instruments are added as the piece progresses to the full 100-piece orchestra at the end. Scott Bradley also preferred orchestral sound effects to ones added by the sound department, hence the big shock chords that you find at various places.

    =======(The Details)=======

This medley is organized in 3 section with 3 different tracks. I gave myself some artistic liberties with the themes to make them flow into each other better.

We start with the original Minecraft theme as a brief intro, leading into Wet Hands before finishing with Sweden. Sweden closes the piece with a climactic crescendo followed by a soft echo of the theme.

I haven't Minecraft in years but making this medley certain brought back a lot of those memories. Let me know your Minecraft experience in the comments.

    Your Pianist,

    Erik C.

P.S. Up next is a bit of a toss-up. This may be the Endgame.

P.P.S. I added a neat reverse effect at the start of the medley in post. Wanted to ease the ear into the first chord. Let me know what you think and if it made a difference.

  • Wilhelm Stenhammar - September - for SAATTBB choir

    2:28

    Wilhelm Stenhammar (1871 - 1927):
SEPTEMBER (ALLE DE VOKSENDE SKYGGER) ~
    September (All the growing shadows)

This song is no. 1 of Tre körvisor (Three choral songs).

Wilhelm Stenhammar was a Swedish composer, conductor and pianist.

The poem is written by J. P. Jacobsen (1847 - 1885), who was a Danish novelist, poet and scientist. He began the naturalist movement in Danish literature and was a part of the Modern Breakthrough in Scandinavia. Jacobsen's canon consists of two novels, seven short stories, and one posthumous volume of poetry – small, but enough to place him as one of the most influential Danish writers. Realizing that the work of Charles Darwin was not well known in Denmark, he translated The Origin of Species and The Descent of Man into Danish.

    Alle de voksende Skygger
har vævet sig sammen til en,
    ensom paa Himmelen lyser
    en Stjærne saa straalende ren,
    Skyerne have saa tunge Drømme,
    blomsternes øjne i Duggraad svømme,
    underligt Aftenvinden suser i Linden.

    (J. P. Jacobsen - September 1868)

    All the growing shadows have
    Woven themselves into one,
    Alone in the sky shines
A star so bright and pure,
The clouds have so heavy dreams,
    Dew flows from flowers' eyes,
And strangely sings the evening breeze,
    Sings in the linden tree.

Below is another English translation which is singable.
It is found in The Carl Nielsen Edition:

    All the developing shadows
    Are wowen together as one,
Lonely and bright in the heavens
A star that shines second to none,
Clouds have their gloom-laden dreams while sleeping,
Eyes of the flowers from dew are weeping,
    Evening breeze strangely soughing,
    Linden is bowing.

  • Jean Sibelius - Finlandia

    9:37

Finlandia, Op. 26 is a symphonic poem by the Finnish composer Jean Sibelius. The first version was written in 1899, and it was revised in 1900. The piece was composed for the Press Celebrations of 1899, a covert protest against increasing censorship from the Russian Empire, as the last of seven pieces, each performed as an accompaniment to a tableau depicting episodes from Finnish history.

The premiere was on 2 July 1900 in Helsinki with the Helsinki Philharmonic Society conducted by Robert Kajanus. A typical performance takes anywhere from 7½ to 9 minutes.

A recurrent joke within Finland at this time was the renaming of Finlandia at various musical concerts so as to avoid Russian censorship. Titles under which the piece masqueraded were numerous, a famously flippant example being Happy Feelings at the awakening of Finnish Spring.

Most of the piece is taken up with rousing and turbulent music, evoking the national struggle of the Finnish people. But towards the end, a calm comes over the orchestra, and the serenely melodic Finlandia Hymn is heard. Often incorrectly cited as a traditional folk melody, the Hymn section is of Sibelius's own creation.

Although initially composed for orchestra, in 1900 Sibelius arranged the entire work for solo piano.

Sibelius later reworked the Finlandia Hymn into a stand-alone piece. This hymn, with words written in 1941 by Veikko Antero Koskenniemi, is one of the most important national songs of Finland (though Maamme is the national anthem). With different words, it is also sung as a Christian hymn (Be Still, My Soul), and was the national anthem of the short-lived African state of Biafra (Land of the Rising Sun).

  • Wilhelm Peterson-Berger - Stemning - for SATB choir

    3:03

    Wilhelm Peterson-Berger (1867 - 1942):
STEMNING (ALLE DE VOKSENDE SKYGGER) ~
    Mood (All the growing shadows)

This song is no. 8 of 8 sånger för blandad kör, opus 11 (8 songs for mixed choir).

Wilhelm Peterson-Berger was a Swedish composer and music-critic.

The poem is written by J. P. Jacobsen (1847 - 1885), who was a Danish novelist, poet and scientist. He began the naturalist movement in Danish literature and was a part of the Modern Breakthrough in Scandinavia. Jacobsen's canon consists of two novels, seven short stories, and one posthumous volume of poetry – small, but enough to place him as one of the most influential Danish writers. Realizing that the work of Charles Darwin was not well known in Denmark, he translated The Origin of Species and The Descent of Man into Danish.

    Alle de voksende Skygger
har vævet sig sammen til en,
    ensom paa Himmelen lyser
    en Stjærne saa straalende ren,
    Skyerne have saa tunge Drømme,
    blomsternes øjne i Duggraad svømme,
    underligt Aftenvinden suser i Linden.

    (J. P. Jacobsen - September 1868)

    All the growing shadows have
    Woven themselves into one,
    Alone in the sky shines
A star so bright and pure,
The clouds have so heavy dreams,
    Dew flows from flowers' eyes,
And strangely sings the evening breeze,
    Sings in the linden tree.

Below is another English translation which is singable.
It is found in The Carl Nielsen Edition:

    All the developing shadows
    Are wowen together as one,
Lonely and bright in the heavens
A star that shines second to none,
Clouds have their gloom-laden dreams while sleeping,
Eyes of the flowers from dew are weeping,
    Evening breeze strangely soughing,
    Linden is bowing.

    Musica Ficta
    Conducted by Bo Holten

    Sigurd von Koch (1879 - 1919):
    ALLE DE VOKSENDE SKYGGER ~
    All the growing shadows

I continue my exploration of compositions on this specific poem with a Swedish one.

Richert Sigurd Valdemar von Koch was a Swedish composer, music critic, poet and painter. He studied in Berlin and Dresden in 1905 and took his examinations in music teaching and precentorship at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Stockholm in 1910. Koch died during the great influenza epidemic of 1918-19. During his last years he experienced a veritable explosion of creativity, producing more than a hundred songs. Sigurd von Koch is the father of well-known composer Erland von Koch.

This song is one of two songs which were published in 1916 with the title Stilla Visor (Quiet Songs). Both songs are setting poems by J. P. Jacobsen.

The poem is written by J. P. Jacobsen (1847 - 1885), who was a Danish novelist, poet and scientist. He began the naturalist movement in Danish literature and was a part of the Modern Breakthrough in Scandinavia.
