  • Celebrating Sri Lanka

    7:05

“Celebrate Sri Lanka” is a project initiated by Berklee students from Sri Lanka in order to foster relationships between the island nation of Sri Lanka and Berklee College of Music, USA. The project was commenced at the LOFT, featuring guest artists Nalinda Pieris, Uthpala Eroshan and Dilhan Pinnagoda, all traditional Sri Lankan musicians based in New York. They conducted a workshop on Sri Lankan drums and dance with performances featuring the various costumes, performance techniques and rituals. The second phase of the project was the release of this music video, which brings together students from both Berklee College of Music and the Boston Conservatory, representing 17 different countries all journeying together in this musical voyage.

Special mention to the following individuals, without whom none of this would have been possible:

Tamia Jordan: Director of Student Activities Center, Joshua Crary: Diversity Programs Advisor for the Office of Diversity and Inclusion, Brenda Bailey: Assistant Director of the Office of Diversity and Inclusion, Michael Borgida: Marketing Manager at Berklee College of Music, Sara Galo: President of Student Government Association at Boston Conservatory, Swarna Adikari, Arjuna Balasuriya and Families for providing decorations.

Zain Rashid student of Rashid khan is one of the fastest tabla players among the youngsters. At the age of nine he already had supersonic fingers with command on rhythmic and tonal aspects of tabla . He could be one of the best exponents of the legacy of our beloved maestro Ustad Aslam Khan known as Acha Pehalwan.

Now let us know more about Tabla and how it was introduced all information is based on Wikipedia information so it's all correct.
The tabla is a South Asian membranophone percussion instrument consisting of a pair of drums. This is used in traditional, classical, popular, folk music and now a days in all kind of music. It has been a particularly important instrument in Sufi Classical Music for a long time. This is mostly used in Pakistan, India, Afghanistan, Nepal, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka.
The name tabla is origined from the word tabl. Tabl the Persian and Arabic word for drum. However, the ultimate origin of the musical instrument is contested by scholars, some tracing it to West Asia, others tracing it to the evolution of indigenous musical instruments of the Indian subcontinent.

  • Of Deities and Demons - Trailer

    2:54

In a rapturous celebration of ancient Sri Lankan culture, Baliphonics and the AAO bring age-old rituals to life through traditional dance, chanting and music.

In a spectacle of dance, music and light, this unique group draws upon an astrological healing practice known as Bali Ritual, in which deities are invoked and demons exorcised.

On a recent trip to Sri Lanka, Peter Knight (Artistic Director, Australian Art Orchestra) formed a friendship with leader of Baliphonics, Sumudi Suraweera. This friendship formed the start of an exciting collaboration combining the yak bera (demon drum), clarinets and other traditional instrumentations with the signature experimental jazz stylings of Australian Art Orchestra.

Peter Knight: One of the most extraordinary experiences of music and performance I’ve ever had was attending an all-night harvest ritual near Ambalangoda in southern Sri Lanka last year. The drumming was unbelievable and it went on for hours at a time along with song, dance, fire, and the serving of food. Each sense was engaged and kind of overwhelmed as elation and fatigue became something resembling intoxication. During that same trip I was introduced to Sum and his group Baliphonics, which works with these traditional elements along with new-jazz approaches, and which features two of the most famous Low Country ritual musicians in Sri Lanka, Susantha and Prasanna Rupathilaka. Together they distill some of the energy of this ritual music while at the same time creating something new. Sum and I immediately saw the potential in a collaboration with the AAO.”

    Creative Team:
    Sumudi Suraweera – composition, drums
Susantha Rupathilaka – dance and voice
Prasanna Rupathilaka – dance, yak bera and voice
    Reuben Derrick – clarinets
Peter Knight – trumpet and electronics
Reuben Lewis – trumpet and electronics
    Carl Dewhurst – guitar
    Mary Rapp – cello

Recorded live at Arts Centre Melbourne, 8 December 2019

  • The Courtesan Project by Manjari Chaturvedi

    1:08

Conceptualised and directed by Manjari Chaturvedi

The concert relives the magic of The Courtesan, the muse for poets, painters, sculptors, artists, musicians, writers, filmmakers and the creative thought at large.

Manjari Chaturvedi has taken her obsession with classical dance and turned it into more than expression: in her hands, it is cultural renaissance and syncretism; narrative form and dialogue.
Nothing is more evocative of this than “The Courtesan Project”, a unique research and documentation exercise via which Manjari seeks to chronicle the historically remarkable role of the ‘tawaif’ in artistic life: as muse to poets and painters, writers and kings, musicians and leaders.
And in so doing, she seeks to claim for these maligned women the reverence due them for their learning and their performance art; their intelligence and wit; their talent and raw sensual power.
This project is a medium to draw the attention of the society towards our erstwhile courtesans and how discriminatory practices impacted NOT only their life but also of their families.

Thus, advocating and creating much required space for them as an ‘artist” in the society through cultural activism and social change. The well-researched cultural production dedicated to the performing art of the courtesan will bring to forefront the performing art of the courtesans through both Information, Communication & Technology and the live performance. This will make it a unique production AS IT IS ENTERTAINMENT BUT WITH A STRONG MESSAGE.

This is an exhaustive research as it brings alive dance and stories of women who were stigmatised by the society for being performers both music and dance and in an unfortunate society ridden by gender discrimination were not even part of the documentation history of the performing arts.

Hence it becomes imminent we tell their brilliant stories to the world and show their their art, their music, their dance. This is a part of the gender in arts, and how the gender of performer shapes the art for future. Those forgotten dancers called tawaif & nachnewali who do not find space in the documentation of performing arts, whereas their counterpart men performers are referred to as Ustads and the incredible women merely as Nautch Girls. These were the women who moved from the Kotha and formed the part of the Parsi theatre and then subsequently were the first women performers for the big Hindi Film Industry. And their contribution to art largely remains un acknowledged. This project brings their art to the foreground.

  • LEXXTEX 192 - M.I.A. INTERVIEW TAVIS SMILEY PBS

    12:22

Mathangi Maya Arulpragasam (Tamil: மாதங்கி 'மாயா' அருள்பிரகாசம், Mātaṅki 'Māyā' Aruḷpirakācam ?; born 18 July 1975),[1] better known by her stage name M.I.A. (both a play on her name and abbreviation for Missing in Action), is a British rapper, singer, songwriter, record producer, painter and director of Sri Lankan Tamil descent. Her compositions combine elements of hip hop, electronica, dance, alternative and world music. M.I.A. began her career in 2000 as a visual artist, filmmaker and designer in West London before beginning her recording career in 2002. Since rising to prominence in early 2004 for her singles Sunshowers and Galang, charting in the UK and Canada and reaching number 11 on the Billboard Hot Dance Singles Sales in the US, she has been nominated for an Academy Award, two Grammy Awards and the Mercury Prize.

She released her debut album Arular in 2005 and second album Kala in 2007 to wide critical acclaim. Arular charted in Norway, Belgium, Sweden, Japan and the US, where it reached number 16 on the Billboard Top Independent Album Chart and number 3 on the Dance/Electronic Albums Chart. Kala was certified silver in the United Kingdom and gold in Canada and the United States, where it topped the Dance/Electronic Albums Chart. It also charted in several countries across Europe, in Japan and Australia. The album's first single Boyz reached the top ten in Canada and on the Billboard Hot Dance Singles Sales in 2007, becoming her first top-ten charting single. The single Paper Planes peaked in the top 20 worldwide and reached number four on the Billboard Hot 100. Paper Planes has been certified Gold in New Zealand and three times platinum in Canada and the US where, as of November 2011, it is ranked the seventh best-selling song by a British artist in the digital era. It has become XL Recordings' second best selling single to date. M.I.A.'s third album Maya was released in 2010 soon after the controversial song-film short Born Free. This became her highest-charting album in the UK and the US, reaching number nine on the Billboard 200, topping the Dance/Electronic Chart and debuted in the top ten in Finland, Norway, Greece and Canada. The single XXXO reached the top forty in Belgium, Spain and the UK. M.I.A. has embarked on four global headlining tours and is the founder of her own multimedia label, N.E.E.T..
A major influence in the rise in popularity of female musicians and electronic music in the 21st century, her trailblazing contributions to music and fashion culture through her distinct compositions, videos, artwork and style helped revitalise British and world music. Her work has been placed highly in both listener polls and critics' lists. M.I.A.'s early compositions relied heavily on the Roland MC-505 sequencer/drum machine, while her later work marked an evolution in her sound, presenting layered textures of instruments, electronics and unusual sound samples to form her acclaimed and distinctive avant garde music style. Lyrically incorporating a range of political, social, philosophical and cultural references that have defied existing pop music conventions, M.I.A. was one of the first acts to come to public attention through the internet.

M.I.A. is a philanthropist and humanitarian outside of her musical career. Her activism has been met with both appreciation and criticism. In 2002, she received an Alternative Turner Prize nomination for her art. She is the only artist in history to be nominated for an Academy Award, Grammy Award, Brit Award, Mercury Prize and Alternative Turner Prize, and the first artist of Asian descent to be nominated for an Academy and Grammy Award in the same year. M.I.A. is named as one of the defining artists of the 2000s decade by Rolling Stone in its Best of the Decade list. Esquire magazine ranked M.I.A. on its list of the 75 most influential people of the 21st century and Time magazine named her one of the world's most influential people.
