I found a lot of k-indie artists on Soundcloud recently and really wanted to feature them in a playlist. When you think of k-indie, you probably think of Standing Egg, Acourve, 10cm, or similar artists I've featured in my other mixes, but these artists are indie in the truest sense. No labels, no big record deals, just raw talent and love for music.

I don't think this playlist will be as popular as my other ones, but please show these artists lots of love if you enjoy their songs :)

  • Relaxing Rain Sounds on the Lake for Sleep, Meditation, Study or Soothing a Baby

    10:01

Relaxing rain sounds on the lake for sleep, meditation, study, reading or soothing a baby. Allow this calming rainfall video to create a peaceful ambience for relaxation. Nature sounds are great for relieving stress and anxiety so that you can relax and sleep better at night. These relaxing sounds create natural white noise that can help relieve insomnia and treat tinnitus symptoms or even soothe a crying baby. White noise combines all the different sound frequencies into one which helps your mind switch off as it can no longer detect any patterns. Your mind is programmed to detect patterns in the environment, which is usually fine, however, when trying to fall asleep at night this can become a problem. These soothing sounds are also great for reading or studying as they will help minimise distracting background noises. We hope you enjoy this relaxing rain video by the lake. Please share with family and friends if they have sleeping problems.

  • IDLES: NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert

    13:06

Watch Idles play Never Fight A Man With A Perm, Mercedes Marxist and I'm Scum at the Tiny Desk.

June 18, 2019 | Bob Boilen -- My first time seeing Idles ended with guitarist Mark Bobo Bowen frenetically dancing on a bar, his guitar still keeping time, until the swinging neck suddenly shattered some low-hanging, glass lighting fixtures. The band's set at South by Southwest was fierce and I knew it'd be a challenge trying to figure out how to bring that cathartic rage behind my desk. There was talk for a while of some members of the band strapping on pocket-sized guitar amps and beating on a single drum. But a week before this bunch of British madmen arrived at NPR, the instrument list had grown and what ensued was just about the loudest, most fun and most raucous Tiny Desk Concert in memory.

What lead singer Joe Talbot and his mates bring to their shows is a mix of love and outrage. Their songs are often bursts of fury, but the message is insightful and not intended to incite. Joe Talbot says their opening Tiny Desk song, Never Fight A Man With A Perm, from their album Joy as an Act of Resistance, is an exploration of the horrid corners of my past.

It only took a few seconds for Joe's face to turn blood-red; as he growled, it stayed that way for the next 13-minutes, even as he curtseyed at the end of the first song and bounced his way into the second. Bobo meanwhile moved from standing and pounding the bass drum to thrashing a guitar. I think a water bottle and some miscellaneous objects got knocked from the shelves while guitarist Lee Kiernan played. But watching his hyperactive movements in this confined space, it's actually hard to believe that so few things broke. We are not the Jonas Brothers, Joe Talbot explained before their final tune. People get confused. He said this with his charming smile and began to run in place while singing I'm Scum, just to make it clear who they are.

Bob Boilen | April 7, 2017 - Last May, Tash Sultana posted a self-made video, just her in her living room with guitar, laptop and a great song called Jungle. Within five days it had drawn a million views.

This 21-year-old Maltese-Australian got a guitar from her grandfather when she was three, she says, and has played it every day since. It's astonishing to watch Sultana's fluidity on her instrument, like a natural extension of her body. (She also plays bass, saxophone, trumpet, flute and more, but kept it simple at the Tiny Desk.) I thought I had a lot of energy — watching her bounce from guitar to drum machine to two separate microphones — and then hopping barefoot from looping pedal to effect pedal as she builds her songs was exhilarating and exhausting. There's more here than an exercise in virtuosity, her music is filled with adventure and ambition. These songs are rapturous and resonant.

    Tash has just finished a month-long, sold-out U.S. tour.

  • Celebrating Sri Lanka

    7:05

“Celebrate Sri Lanka” is a project initiated by Berklee students from Sri Lanka in order to foster relationships between the island nation of Sri Lanka and Berklee College of Music, USA. The project was commenced at the LOFT, featuring guest artists Nalinda Pieris, Uthpala Eroshan and Dilhan Pinnagoda, all traditional Sri Lankan musicians based in New York. They conducted a workshop on Sri Lankan drums and dance with performances featuring the various costumes, performance techniques and rituals. The second phase of the project was the release of this music video, which brings together students from both Berklee College of Music and the Boston Conservatory, representing 17 different countries all journeying together in this musical voyage.

Special mention to the following individuals, without whom none of this would have been possible:

Tamia Jordan: Director of Student Activities Center, Joshua Crary: Diversity Programs Advisor for the Office of Diversity and Inclusion, Brenda Bailey: Assistant Director of the Office of Diversity and Inclusion, Michael Borgida: Marketing Manager at Berklee College of Music, Sara Galo: President of Student Government Association at Boston Conservatory, Swarna Adikari, Arjuna Balasuriya and Families for providing decorations.

We've been singing it, we've heard it in different versions, but the amazing thing about the song, Way Maker, is that it was born in the Federal Republic of Nigeria, written by Sinach. The father has given Jesus the nations as his inheritance, and this is never more powerfully demonstrated than when every tribe and language gather before him in worship. This version of Way Maker features worship leader and the pastor of Deeper Fellowship Church, William McDowell, and Darlene Zschech, who is also the pastor of HopeUC.

The timeless vocal of Darlene along with exhortations from William about what God is doing in the nations will hopefully leave you inspired and in awe of the Miracle Worker. Our hope with the REVERE version of Way Maker is to gently help steer the church away from a production culture where the emphasis can, mistakenly, become a love for worship, to a reverential culture where the focus is, clearly and firmly, a love for Christ.

    Lyrics

You are here, moving in our midst
    I worship You
    I worship You
You are here, working in this place
    I worship You
    I worship You

    You are
Way maker, miracle worker, promise keeper
Light in the darkness, my God
    That is who You are
    You are
Way maker, miracle worker, promise keeper
Light in the darkness, my God
    That is who You are

You are here, touching every heart
    I worship You
    I worship You
You are here, healing every heart
    I worship You
    I worship You
You are here, turning lives around
    I worship You
    I worship You
You are here, mending every heart
    I worship You
    I worship You

    That is who You are
    That is who You are
    That is who You are
    That is who You are

Even when I don’t see it, You’re working
Even when I don’t feel it, You’re working
You never stop, You never stop working
You never stop, You never stop working

March 12, 2020 | Robin Hilton -- Shortly into Coldplay's soundcheck, singer Chris Martin cut off the opening song, Cry Cry Cry, right in the middle. His band had brought along a nine-piece choir, and he asked them to take Cry Cry Cry one more time. When one of the singers asked if there was a problem, Martin replied, No, I'm just in f****** heaven right now!

That feeling was obvious throughout the performance. Watching Martin at the keys, with the For Love Choir behind him and Coldplay guitarist Jonny Buckland at his side, you'd be forgiven for thinking it was the happiest day of his life. Laughing, bouncing to the music and playing off the crowd, Martin and company gave one of the most jubilant, uplifting and memorable performances we've ever had at the Tiny Desk.

Watching their gospel-infused take on Viva La Vida, it was hard not to beam with joy; hearing their stirring cover of Prince's 1999 brought on a mass urge to leap up and dance. The entire set was a perfectly executed showcase of the band's creative spirit and love of community through music.

Viva La Vida was the only older track Coldplay performed, in addition to the surprise Prince cover. (The band had just performed at a Prince tribute show in January.) The other three songs — Cry Cry Cry, Broken and Champion of the World — are all from the band's stellar new album, Everyday Life, which was recorded with some of the singers on hand for the Tiny Desk. Martin joked that, In a very real way, they've Photoshopped our songs to be much better than they actually are. Whether or not that's true, for at least this one sunny afternoon at the NPR Music offices, the choir — and Coldplay's inspired reworking of its own music — felt transcendent.

    P.S.
    1) I do realise that not all of the artists are K-pop ones but I wanted to take a wider aspect of Korean musicians.
    2) I know there are bound to be some artists I missed but mostly it's because I couldn't find a greeting video of them, nevertheless feel free to comment which ones I should add and I will see what I can do.

    8:14

Tirikilatops performing on Stage 3 on Supersonic Sunday - an avant-garde, cross-cultural, collaborative effort between UK and South Korean artists/musicians. Together they forge bizarre electro k-pop from an ingredients list that contains kimchi beats, pop sensibilities, offbeat lyrics, hacked keyboards and super earworm melodies. Their guiding forces are surrealism, dada, forteana and charity shop finds.

  • PANDE SHAHOV // ‘Ne si go prodavaj Koljo,čiflikot ’ by Simon Trpčeski & Friends

    2:11

    Release date → August 2020
Listen to the first single →

‘Makedonissimo’, meaning ‘very Macedonian’, sees pianist Simon Trpčeski take a detour from Beethoven and Brahms to celebrate the music of his homeland. Trpčeski takes listeners on a joyous tour through the incredible rhythms and haunting melodies of the Macedonian folk music tradition in which highly intricate, jazz-influenced riffs and harmonies are seamlessly interwoven. Inspired by Trpčeski’s passion for the folk traditions of his homeland Macedonian composer Pande Shahov (b. 1973) created a six movement cycle he called Pletenki (Plaits). In these new arrangements Shahov merges his own sound world – one which is influenced by impressionist attitudes to resonance and jazz harmony – with Macedonia’s traditional music. This project had its world premiere in May 2017 at the Ludwigsburg Festival, Germany and went on to wow audiences in the UK (London, Liverpool, Birmingham), Slovenia (Ljubljana), France (Lille), Poland (Warsaw, Szczecin, Gdansk, Katowice), the Netherlands (Amsterdam), Serbia (Belgrade) and South Korea (Jeongseon, Wonju, Chuncheon). Led by Trpčeski on piano the quintet of virtuosi musicians comprises Aleksandar Krapovski violin, Alexander Somov cello, Hidan Mamudov clarinet, saxophone, kaval and Vlatko Nushev percussion.

  • BRATS - 決まりごと -

BRATS「決まりごと (Kimarigoto) -Version 2020-」 Official Audio!

BRATS Kimarigoto - Version 2020 - Official Audio!
This is a rearranged and remastered version of the song originally recorded for the debut album BRATS released on July 25, 2018.

During the 7 consecutive months of releasing new works, the coronavirus (COVID-19) spread and the declaration of emergency was triggered, which affected the band's recording schedule.
Because of that, the next new single has been moved back to a later date.

The new release this month (June) will be the 2020 version of Kimarigoto, BRATS' signature song that is always included in the band's set list and often played at the end.

With the addition of this song, the release schedule has been changed from 7 consecutive months to 8 consecutive months, and new releases will be announced in July and August.

  • Coreyah: Tiny Desk Concert

    16:29

The Tiny Desk is working from home for the foreseeable future. Introducing NPR Music's Tiny Desk (home) concerts, bringing you performances from across the country and the world. It's the same spirit — stripped-down sets, an intimate setting — just a different space.

    Bob Boilen | June 30, 2020
This week we'll publish four Tiny Desk (home) concerts from around the world. We begin in South Korea, where Tiny Desk Concerts are quite popular. In fact, I invited the Korean band SsingSsing to perform in 2017 and that Tiny Desk concert has been viewed more than 5 million times.

Today, I bring you the music of Coreyah. According to the band, the name represents inheritance, and that's evident in the way this six-piece presents old or traditional Korean music with a modern twist. It's an uninhibited vision of Korean traditional music with some psychedelic rock, Balkan gypsy, even sounds from South America and Africa. You'll see and hear instruments including the daegeum, a large bamboo flute and geomungo, a large Korean zither that lays on the floor.

When translated into Hangul, the Korean alphabet, Coreyah means whale, which is the group's good luck charm. The music was recorded in the band's music studio in Seoul, with COVID-19 shutting down most of the country. Strict social distancing is still ongoing in South Korea, though they are streaming their concerts to fans.

And just a note from the band: The geomungo player in this video is Park Dawool, as Coreyah member Na Sunjin was forced to miss this recording due to a personal emergency.

Every dawn I wake up to the breathing beside me
My beloved one is still sound asleep
I know a pair of hands keeps the storm away
Guarding our island and leading us towards dawn

Every dawn I see the children off to school
    Dearest home is always here
I know a pair of eyes watches over us
Guarding our island and leading us towards dawn

We’ve agreed to take a rain check
We’ve promised to not travel afar
Beloved ones of others become ours to depend on
Their determination is as strong as a beam of sunlight
    Before summer arrives
    It’s gonna shine through always

Every dawn when light seeps in
    We awaken with profound gratitude
    You and I
Guard our world and head towards dawn

    6:04

The Tiny Desk is working from home for the foreseeable future. Introducing NPR Music's Tiny Desk (home) concerts, bringing you performances from across the country and the world. It's the same spirit — stripped-down sets, an intimate setting — just a different space.

July 1, 2020 | Bob Boilen -- This week we're taking the Tiny Desk (home) concerts to places rarely visited; yesterday was Seoul, South Korea. Today we take you to Malawi in Southeastern Africa to meet Nelson Mulligo of the Malawi Mouse Boys. We see his two-room home in the opening shot where he and his family live without plumbing or electricity. Then we see Nelson, standing below the power lines, holding his homemade guitar singing, I'm So Tired of You. It's a song that sings out the evils of poverty, a life of hard physical work, of making money scavenging for mice amongst boars and snakes so they can sell them as roasted mice shish kabobs along the roadside. We only get one song, and even that cuts off abruptly, but I was deeply moved when producer Ian Brennan (Tinariwen, The Good Ones) sent it my way. He and his wife Marilena Umuhoza Delli met and recorded the Malawi Mouse Boys in 2011. You can hear Ian Brennan tell his story on NPR's Weekend Edition. If you fall in love with what you hear, give a listen to the entire band harmonize. You can find their music on Bandcamp here. Even though the group played Peter Gabriel's WOMAD festival in 2015, they still live in poverty. Support what you love.

    4:16

Rise Up - Andra Day Cover by Leoness THANK YOU covid-19 heroes

I’ve had a lot of requests to cover ’Rise Up’ by Andra Day so I decided to also make a music video with real life clips from YOU, from people all over the world, to say THANK YOU to all the covid-19 heroes who are rising up for us. It’s always beautiful to see how we all unite in times of difficulty.

All across the globe, people are helping each other, spreading love, positivity, and working selflessly to solve this problem for the whole world. We as a human race will always rise up and bounce back. There is always more positive than negative, more good than bad, more hope than fear. Even if we are fearful, there is always someone who is willing to be strong for us. And they deserve a thank you.

We want to unite to say a huge THANK YOU to everyone who has been caught up in the covid-19 global pandemic. Everyone who continues to work despite putting their own safety at risk. Nurses, doctors, paramedics, first responders, call centre volunteers, national benefits call staff, supermarket and retail staff, public transport staff, government staff, delivery drivers, musicians spreading cheer, airline staff escorting people home, emergency services, house keeping, cleaners, councillors, volunteers, council workers, the people taking food to the elderly, carers, the list goes on and on!!! We appreciate you!!

I felt super emotional editing this when I was going through all these clips of gratitude and acts of kindness, the 'thank you heroes' and 'clap for our carers' movements, as well as people in their uniforms smiling through it. There is so much love in this world and it's time we all shared some LOVE and positivity.

Hope you enjoy my cover of Rise Up. THANK YOU to everyone who helped me put this together, to @chrishalili_ for filming my bad attempts at miming, for everyone who sent in their photos and videos, and to the NHS staff who let me use their wonderful messages!

  • Naphta - Dim Daybreak

    4:59

After a well received debut album, ‘7th Expedition’ (Transatlantyk), numerous vinyl EP’s including Studio Barnhus, OMENA, Father And Son Records and Tapes, and several live acts, which have taken him to South Korea and Japan; Musician, DJ and Producer Naphta, a graduate of RBMA in 2011, returns with a new LP, “Naphta & The Shamans”.

Naphta’s use of creative sampling is his foundation. Whilst recording his first LP, Naphta was gifted with samples sent by musicians from around the world. However, with the new album the creative process changed. The artist stepped away from sampling and turned to instruments, an electric and bass guitar, percussion, keys and drum machines. Despite his departure from sampling, influences from African, Jazz and Electronic music can still be heard, but these are secondary to the prominent presence of Psychedelic Rock. ‘Sending tracks around the Globe is interesting and leads to cool effects but this time I wanted to place emphasis on my interpersonal interactions with the musicians I collaborated with.’ - Naphta says.

The result of this new approach is an exciting 10 track LP, where Purple Dubstep is mixed with Jazz, Psychedelic Rock is blended with UK Funky and Shamanic Dub is fused with Ambient. The LPs story is bound together by the first and last tracks, ‘Dim Daybreak’ and ‘Pale Dusk’ both featuring the vocals of Jaq Merner, lead vocalist of Kroki. ‘I’m escaping from making music with the use of vocals, specifically lyrics, which can change at any time. However, in this case, Jaq sang abstract phrases, which helped to create and emphasise a sense of escapism, the key theme of the album.’ - Naphta says.

A variety of genres are drawn upon to create the story of this album. ‘Explorer’s Judgement’ takes influence from Disco, Dubstep shapes ‘Stalking Knights’, Indie Rock is channelled in ‘Frozen Paths’ and Dub is featured in ‘Firelink Strine’. Here, Naphta cherry picks the elements from each genre which best fit his vision. ‘Recreating the past or paying homages isn't my main priority. Throughout my life, I have found that I've been accompanied by a variety of different music, and for this reason I strive to show diversity in my compositions.’ Naphta says.

‘Naphta & Shamans’ is a thrilling album with an exciting, yet unexpected style, shape-shifting in sound. You may hear Shamanic percussion or the rhythmic sounds of the drum machines, but nevertheless you can still hear it's the same artist who recorded ‘7th Expedition’. ‘In contrast to my debut album, I didn't create a narrative to accompany the music. I decided to allow the music to tell the story through sound, and that's why the order of the tracks is so important. I want the listener to be able to follow a story, identify a main character and discover their fate. In some sense I have taken influence from the narration technique of Hidetaki Miyazaki, creator of the game series ‘Dark Souls’, which had a massive impact on me. The album is constructed with cyclic listening, everyone can discover something different and change the narrative - Naphta says.

This album is the result of a collective effort. The ample list of contributors credited on the album reflect the many jam sessions held during its creation. Marcin Mrówka (Bluszcz) assisted with the development of compositions and production. Electric guitarist, Vojto Monteur and base guitarist ,Paweł Stachowiak both from EABS can be heard on some of the tracks. Also, Bartosz Kruczyński (Ptaki, Earth Trax) makes a guest appearance, just to name a few. The cover by Zbiok Czajkowski reflects an ambitious narrative. ‘I wanted something that would connect with psychedelia and also give a nod to Kitsch. Something along the lines of Iron Maiden covers, ‘World of Warhammer 40K, fantasy’. A cover which could suggest the story of the album, but not necessarily.’

• 아리랑

    7:48

Jin-yeong So who is a singer and actor at Berklee College of Music from South Korea sings Arirang.

Arirang is a Korean folk song that is often considered the unofficial national anthem of Korea and included on the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage list. It is more than 600 years old and had been handed down orally more than 3,600 variations with different versions which means even before South and North Korea had divided. Our culture has a lot of sorrow and regret, but this song has a message of forgiveness with expressing the sorrow. Inspired by Korean jazz singer Youn Sun Nah, and Jin wrote an original poem. Jin wanted to deliver calm and peace to the audience.

[ Poem by Jinyeong So & Korean translation ]

Past is the past, we can’t turn it back.
No regrets, but there are only lessons.
    과거는 과거이지요
    우리는 그것을 돌이킬 수 없어요
    후회하지 말아요
    우리는 그로부터 교훈을 얻었으니까요

Longing and expectations are the same as greed.
    Let it flow
    Let it flow
    갈망과 기대는
    욕심과도 같으니
    흘려 보내주세요
    흘려 보내주세요

    Don’t regret
You are a more precious creature than you think.
You are a more beautiful creature than you imagine.
    후회하지 말아요.
    당신은 당신이 생각하는 것보다
    훨씬 소중한 존재예요.
    당신은 당신이 상상하는 것보다
    훨씬 아름다운 존재예요.

    Everything has a reason
    Remember
You are a precious person in the world. ”
    모든 것에는 이유가 있어요.
    기억하세요.
당신은 이 세상에서 정말 소중한 존재라는 걸.”

    Poem by Jinyeong So

[ Lyrics of the song, Arirang in Korean & English translation ]
    아리랑 아리랑 아라리요
    아리랑 고개로 넘어간다
    Arirang Arirang Arariyo
We're going to the Arirang Hill.

    아리랑 아리랑 아라리요
    아리랑 고개로 넘어간다
    Arirang Arirang Arariyo
We're going to the Arirang Hill.

    나를 버리고 가시는 님은
    십리도 못가서 발병난다
You, who is leaving me, shall get sick even before you walk 2 miles.

    아리랑 아리랑 아라리요
    아리랑 고개로 넘어간다
    Arirang Arirang Arariyo
We're going to the Arirang Hill.

    아리랑 아리랑 아라리요
    아리랑 고개로 넘어간다
    Arirang Arirang Arariyo
We're going to the Arirang Hill.

    청천하늘엔 별도 많고
    이내 가슴엔 수심도 많다
There are lots of stars in the blue clear sky.
Like those stars, I have lots of concerns deep in my heart.

저 산에 지는 해는 지고싶어 지나
날 버리고 가시는 님은 가고싶어 가나
Would the sun is setting down beyond the mountain because it wants to?
Would he is leaving me because he wants to?”

  • Park Jiha - Walker: In Seoul

    6:01

    Taken from 'Philos' album.
    ???? Order now:
    ???? Listen:

Park Jiha’s debut album “Communion” – released internationally by tak:til last year – drew well deserved attention to the young Korean instrumentalist/composer’s vivid soundworld. The widely acclaimed album graced 2018 critics lists at The WIRE, Pop Matters and The Guardian. Her new album “Philos”– which she calls an evocation of her “love for time, space and sound” –is every bit as inventive, elegant and transcendent as her debut.

While Park Jiha’s music is often contextualized by its kinship with minimalism, ambient and chamber jazz, her creative backbone is Korean traditional music. Jiha formally studied both its theory and practice and has mastered three of its most emblematic instruments:

“I play a traditional Korean instrument called piri which is like an oboe. Piri is a double reed bamboo flute so it can be quite loud. But I also choose saenghwang (mouth organ), yanggeum (hammered dulcimer), percussion or vocal according to the type of music I’m composing. Picking an instrument has to do with the voice in which I choose to talk. Just like human voice, every instrument has its own charm.”

Park Jiha’s new album “Philos,” is both an extension of, and a swerve away from, her previous record. It shares its predecessor’s patience and deeply resonant hypnotic effects. It similarly looks to the future, while continuing to converse with a rich instrumental language from the past. But the overall tone and intent feels much more interior and personal - more rarefied. This evolution was purposeful and integrated into the way the album was composed and recorded. Jiha tells us:

“When making ‘Communion’ I focused on harmony with the different musicians. But this time, I wanted to get back to putting the focus on what I do. I played all of the instruments myself. This way I could make the tracks more solid, and I could focus on one thing at a time.

Whereas “Communion” featured the classic soundfield of a group of musicians playing in a room,
“Philos” trades that for more density and concentration. Each sound has been given the artist’s full
attention. Fashioned, blended and layered in the way that she hears it. Nothing surrendered to interpretation.

Jiha contends that her new musical approach is reflected in the title of the album. In Greek “Philos” is the plural for philo which can mean “love” or “the liking of a specified thing.”

“When I am working on music, I put a lot focus on what I am doing. I think in the end that is love. 'Philos' is about the process of intense repetition. That is a very powerful love, especially on this album, where I worked on all the tracks by myself. This is why I called the album 'Philos'.”
The album’s compositions include ‘Arrival’, which slowly introduces every sound featured on the record. The gift of unexpected rain in the heat of midsummer is heard on ‘Thunder Shower’. ‘Easy’ is a poem written and recited by the Lebanese artist Dima El Sayed who visited Korea to participate in the Hwaeom Spiritual Music Ritual and was inspired by Park Jiha’s work. The title track ‘Philos’ was created by overlapping sounds and stretching time. ‘Walker: In Seoul’ evokes the vivid soundscape of the city in which Jiha lives. ‘When I Think if Her’ features the ghostly melodies of the yanggeum and saenghwang.

Park Jiha reaches for a sturdy simplicity. A borderless connection between her life and her accomplished musical art:

“My musical influences come from my life, and I think music comes from being human; a person’s music is ultimately representing that person. I know for sure that I have been living sincerely when I make music.”
