  • SsingSsing: NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert

    15:02

Sept. 21, 2017 | Bob Boilen -- One look at (and listen to) the cross-dressing, Asian rock band SsingSsing and you would hardly think they're singing music inspired by traditional Korean folk. But SsingSsing isn't like any other band I've ever seen or heard.

The group sings a regional folk style called minyo and the gender bending look has to do with shamans not glamour. As singer Hee-moon Lee describes it, In Korean traditional art, male shamans, called baksu, have the body of a male. But as mediums, they need more than a single sexual identity, because they're channeling both male and female spirits. When I act a female character and sing, I have to overcome the fact of my being a male sorikkun (singer), and try my utmost to bring a more neutral, unisex feeling to the performance. It sounds silly, but I feel like going back to the sensibilities of my youth, when I liked Madonna, helps.

The understated music, the small dramatic gestures and the costumes all combine for one of my most memorable Tiny Desk Concerts of all time.

    Set List

    Minyo Medley
    Nanbongga (Song of Beloveds)
Saseol Nanbongga (Narrative Song of Beloveds)

    MUSICIANS

Hee-moon Lee (vocal), Da-hye Choo (vocal), Seung-tae Shin (vocal), Young-gyu Jang (bass guitar), Tae-won Lee (electric guitar), and Chul-hee Lee (drums)

    CREDITS

Producers: Bob Boilen, Bronson Arcuri, Morgan Noelle Smith; Audio Engineer: Josh Rogosin; Videographers: Beck Harlan, Kara Frame, Bronson Arcuri; Production Assistant: CJ Riculan; Photo: Claire Harbage/NPR.

This is also the single largest(By membership)Pentecostal Church in the world.
The largest church in the world...The Yoido Full Gospel Church
The greatest quantitative growth in Pentecostalism can be seen in all over Africa, South East Asia, Middle east Asia, China, South Korea, and especially in South America. In Chile, the indigenous Methodist Pentecostal Church has become the largest non-Catholic denomination in a country where
Pentecostals now constitute 15% of the total population. In
Nicaragua and Brazil Pentecostals comprise 20% of the total
population. In Guatemala 30% of the population is said to be
Pentecostal. These kinds of figures have caused some scholars to
ask whether the entire continent of South America is destined to
become Pentecostal in near future. In parts of Asia, Pentecostalism
is demonstrating a similar phenomenal growth. South Korea is home
not only to Paul Yonggi Choโ€™s Yoida Full Gospel (Pentecostal)
Church, the largest single Christian congregation on earth, but
to three other megachurches on the top ten list, two in Seoul and
one in In the predominantly Muslim country of Indonesia, the
Pentecostal Church of Indonesia numbered 1.3 million in 1990,
making it the third largest Christian denomination in that country.
Kimbanguism, an independent African spirit-filled church, claims
the adherence of some 3 million persons (out of a population of 28
million) in Zaire. Similar independent and rapidly growing
Pentecostal churches have developed in Nigeria and Ghana too.

The following summary statement represents an assumption but telling report on global Pentecostalism:
According to the well-known statistician of Christianity, David
Barrett, there were an estimated 74 million
Pentecostal Christians or 6% of the worldโ€™s Christian
population in 1970. In 1997 he estimated that this figure had
reached 497 million or 27% of the Christian population, more than
the total number of โ€˜Protestantsโ€™ and โ€˜Anglicansโ€™ combined, and
only 27 years later. David Barrett projects that according to present trends this figure is likely to rise to 1,140 million pentecostal Christians or 44% of the total number of Christians by the year 2025.

    Pentecostal world-view

First, the Pentecostal world-view is absolutely
God-centered. All things relate to God and God relates to all
    things.
Second, the Pentecostal world-view is holistic and systemic.
For the Spirit-filled person God is not only present in all events,
he holds all things together and causes all things to work
    together.
Third, the Pentecostal world-view is transnational. Knowledge
is relational and is not limited to the realms of reason and
    sensory experience.
Fourth, in conjunction with their holiness heritage,
Pentecostals are concerned with truth, but not just propositional
    truth. Pentecostals were historically anti-creedal.
Fifth, the Pentecostal epistemology of encounter with God is
closely aligned with the biblical understanding of how one comes to
    know. . .
Finally, the Scriptures hold a special place and function
within the Pentecostal world-view. Pentecostals differ from
Evangelicals and other Fundamentalists in approach to the Bible. For Pentecostals the Bible is a living book in which the Holy Spirit is always active in the word of God.
Off course the first Church was Pentecostal (Ref : Acts 2, Holy Bible) and the last church will be Pentecostal too.

These Korean artists, known as K.S. or Korean Soul, are featured on @Bebe Winans latest single Laughter (Just Like A Medicine)!

  • 8 Badass K-pop Choreos by Parris Goebel!

    3:42

Let's take a look at eight of Parris's badass choreo's!

[DISCLAIMER] I'm pretty sure she choreographed all of these (alone or with a partner), but as a Non-Korean speaker I depend on other sources. I read on some sites that 'Hate' by 4MINUTE was also choreographed by her, but I didn't include it since I wasn't 100% sure.

Here's another compilation/facts video because I didn't have any inspiration for a mashup. There haven't been many releases I liked lately, so I'm hoping for GOT7, Mamamoo and BLACKPINK to blow me away soon.
I really like Parris and her work, so this is a little tribute to her. I hope she'll eventually do something for BLACKPINK too (the choreo in the dance practice wasn't made for them, you can watch the original video by clicking on the information button during their segment).

    Description:
Itโ€™s quite common to get caught up in the beat and lyrics of your favorite Hip Hop song. But if you took the time to really listen to the lyrics, and to observe the imagery in the music video, you may be surprised.

We have uncovered some shocking subliminal messages in a few of the most popular Hip Hop songs. If you thought these tracks were all about partying and having a good time, youโ€™re wrong. We uncovered illuminati imagery, a glorification of domestic violence and tributes to those who are no longer with us.

  • Naphta - Crystal Lizard

    3:27

After a well received debut album, โ€˜7th Expeditionโ€™ (Transatlantyk), numerous vinyl EPโ€™s including Studio Barnhus, OMENA, Father And Son Records and Tapes, and several live acts, which have taken him to South Korea and Japan; Musician, DJ and Producer Naphta, a graduate of RBMA in 2011, returns with a new LP, โ€œNaphta & The Shamansโ€.

Naphtaโ€™s use of creative sampling is his foundation. Whilst recording his first LP, Naphta was gifted with samples sent by musicians from around the world. However, with the new album the creative process changed. The artist stepped away from sampling and turned to instruments, an electric and bass guitar, percussion, keys and drum machines. Despite his departure from sampling, influences from African, Jazz and Electronic music can still be heard, but these are secondary to the prominent presence of Psychedelic Rock. โ€˜Sending tracks around the Globe is interesting and leads to cool effects but this time I wanted to place emphasis on my interpersonal interactions with the musicians I collaborated with.โ€™ - Naphta says.

The result of this new approach is an exciting 10 track LP, where Purple Dubstep is mixed with Jazz, Psychedelic Rock is blended with UK Funky and Shamanic Dub is fused with Ambient. The LPs story is bound together by the first and last tracks, โ€˜Dim Daybreakโ€™ and โ€˜Pale Duskโ€™ both featuring the vocals of Jaq Merner, lead vocalist of Kroki. โ€˜Iโ€™m escaping from making music with the use of vocals, specifically lyrics, which can change at any time. However, in this case, Jaq sang abstract phrases, which helped to create and emphasise a sense of escapism, the key theme of the album.โ€™ - Naphta says.

A variety of genres are drawn upon to create the story of this album. โ€˜Explorerโ€™s Judgementโ€™ takes influence from Disco, Dubstep shapes โ€˜Stalking Knightsโ€™, Indie Rock is channelled in โ€˜Frozen Pathsโ€™ and Dub is featured in โ€˜Firelink Strineโ€™. Here, Naphta cherry picks the elements from each genre which best fit his vision. โ€˜Recreating the past or paying homages isn't my main priority. Throughout my life, I have found that I've been accompanied by a variety of different music, and for this reason I strive to show diversity in my compositions.โ€™ Naphta says.

โ€˜Naphta & Shamansโ€™ is a thrilling album with an exciting, yet unexpected style, shape-shifting in sound. You may hear Shamanic percussion or the rhythmic sounds of the drum machines, but nevertheless you can still hear it's the same artist who recorded โ€˜7th Expeditionโ€™. โ€˜In contrast to my debut album, I didn't create a narrative to accompany the music. I decided to allow the music to tell the story through sound, and that's why the order of the tracks is so important. I want the listener to be able to follow a story, identify a main character and discover their fate. In some sense I have taken influence from the narration technique of Hidetaki Miyazaki, creator of the game series โ€˜Dark Soulsโ€™, which had a massive impact on me. The album is constructed with cyclic listening, everyone can discover something different and change the narrative - Naphta says.

This album is the result of a collective effort. The ample list of contributors credited on the album reflect the many jam sessions held during its creation. Marcin Mrรณwka (Bluszcz) assisted with the development of compositions and production. Electric guitarist, Vojto Monteur and base guitarist ,Paweล‚ Stachowiak both from EABS can be heard on some of the tracks. Also, Bartosz Kruczyล„ski (Ptaki, Earth Trax) makes a guest appearance, just to name a few. The cover by Zbiok Czajkowski reflects an ambitious narrative. โ€˜I wanted something that would connect with psychedelia and also give a nod to Kitsch. Something along the lines of Iron Maiden covers, โ€˜World of Warhammer 40K, fantasyโ€™. A cover which could suggest the story of the album, but not necessarily.โ€™

Transficiton is a small rock group relatively unknown to public but with incredible talents. They sang this song to cheer up our Korean players. Maybe thanks to them, we got pretty good grade this year. This song is relatively easy to sing since it's a song designed tobe sang by the public but you can feel their spirit. Hopely, you would enjoy this song.

  • Blue Man Group: NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert

    13:16

September 26, 2016 by BOB BOILEN โ€ข They came, they measured, and they returned to perform a show like no other. It was the great NPR Tiny Desk Takeover by Blue Man Group.

If you've not seen this performance ensemble and their production in New York, Las Vegas, Orlando, Boston, Chicago or Berlin, then you've missed a night of magical fun. These Blue Men may never say a word, but the performances make for poignant looks at who we are as humans. They also make unusual music on instruments of their own design.

Josh Rogosin, our engineer for the Tiny Desk, first saw them in their early days, some 25 years ago at New York's Astor Place Theatre. He told me how the Blue Men would retrofit some of their theatrical magic โ€” including their custom-made instruments, confetti cannons and streamers โ€” to fit this small desk space.

Every band that plays the Tiny Desk must work within the restrictions of the space. So instead of installing their entire signature PVC instrument, what ended up behind the desk was about a third of it. On the right side of the desk, their Shred Mill makes its internet debut: It's a drum machine triggered by magnets that changes rhythm depending where they are placed on the home-made variable-speed conveyor belt. They also invented something called a Spinulum, whose rhythmic tempo is controlled by rotating a wheel that plucks steel guitar strings. (You can read a full description on the instruments below.)

In the end the Blue Men and their dressed-down accompanists performed a Tiny Desk concert like no other. I've been familiar with their music since my days as director of All Things Considered in the 1990s, when I would play their tunes between news stories. Seeing all this come to life (and I know this is true for Josh, as well) was simply unforgettable. From the unique sounds of the PVC to the strumming sounds of the Spinulum to their Meditation For Winners mantras, you'll get a taste of why this troupe's art is so universal and so much fun.

    THE INSTRUMENTS

(as told to us by the Blue Man Group)

Chapman Stick: A combination of a guitar, a bass guitar, and a washboard, the Chapman Stick is 10 strings and all neck. While it can be played with fingers, we often bow the Stick with a bass string. This method, pioneered by Blue Man Group, is called the Mandelbrot Stick Technique.

Cimbalom: An old hammered chromatic string instrument from Hungary that we gave a plywood update to. It's normally played gently with soft mallets, but Blue Man Group hits it aggressively with drumsticks.

Shredmill: Making its internet debut, this new Blue Man Group creation is a treadmill-shaped, electro-mechanical sequencer that a Blue Man (or anyone else) can use to create rhythmic patterns. Placing and/or moving the Shred Mill's tiny little magnets in order to change the sequence (shredding) is dangerously addictive. If you are ever presented with the opportunity to shred, proceed at your own risk.

Spinulum: Have you ever watched Wheel of Fortune and thought to yourself, I wonder what would happen if I took that wheel, shrunk it down to about a foot in diameter, mounted it to a stand, and replaced that little white flipper with steel guitar strings? Us too! The Spinulum is a brand new Blue Man Group instrument that is part slide guitar, part bicycle wheel, and 100 percent dynamite!

PVC: Blue Man Group's signature instrument is comprised of several lengths of polyvinyl chloride pipe that make an almost synthesizer-like sound when struck with a closed-cell foam rubber paddle. This performance only includes the center, high-octave section of the PVC. This is not because we have a problem with the other sections of the PVC. We actually really like them. There just wasn't enough space. It's a tiny desk.

MIDI PVC: The signature Blue Man Group PVC instrument shrunk down and electrified.

    Gusto kitang isayaw ng mabagal
    Gusto kitang isayaw ng mabagal
    Hawak kamay, pikit mata,
    Sumasabay sa musika
    Gusto kitang isayaw ng mabagal

    Heto na
    Ang kantang
    Hinihintay natin
    Eto na ang pagkakataon na
    Sabihin sa'yo
    Ang nararamdaman ng puso ko
Matagal ko nang gustong sabihin ito

    Gusto kitang isayaw ng mabagal
    Gusto kitang isayaw ng mabagal
    Hawak kamay, pikit mata,
    Sumasabay sa musika
    Gusto kitang isayaw ng mabagal

Ilalagay ang โ€˜yong kamay saโ€™king baywang
isasabay sa tugtog ng kanta ating katawan
at dahan-dahang magdidikit ating mga balat
matagal ko nang gustong mangyari ito

    Gusto kitang isayaw ng mabagal
    Gusto kitang isayaw ng mabagal
    Hawak kamay, pikit mata,
    Sumasabay sa musika
    Gusto kitang isayaw ng mabagal

    Pag natapos na ating kanta
    At wala nang musika
Kakantahan ka ng Acapella saโ€™yong tenga
    At nanamnamin natin ang pagsasama

    Gusto kitang isayaw ng mabagal
    Gusto kitang isayaw ng mabagal
    Hawak kamay, pikit mata,
    Sumasabay sa musika
    Gusto kitang isayaw ng mabagal

Today, Steppas Records is 9 years old. When I released my first record I would never have guessed that a family would bloom. I want to thank all the steppas, the musicians, singers, writers, on stage and off, all whom contribute to our little movement. What I love most is that weโ€™re a community from all corners of the globe, the music is our nation, it is our language and it is what binds us. I give thanks for that.

Here's a short clip from a jam we had in occupied Syria, a stoneโ€™s throw from a border, like most borders, drawn and enforced by a small group of psychopaths. To justify that accusation Iโ€™ll list the symptoms associated with antisocial personality disorder; socially irresponsible behaviour, disregarding or violating the rights of others, inability to distinguish between right and wrong, difficulty with showing remorse or empathy, tendency to lie often, manipulating and hurting others, recurring problems with the law, general disregard towards safety and responsibility. We shot this video near a place nicknamed 'shouting hill', named so because when Israel captured and occupied this territory during the 'six-day war' they also separated the local Druze community, and even to this day disjointed friends and family come to this hill with binoculars and megaphones to catch up on family affairs. Due to the border fence and restrictions on telecommunications and mail you actually have to shout through a megaphone across a valley to congratulate your cousin on their wedding day. Everywhere I go in this world I see failing frontiers, broken borders and wavering walls. Every 'great' geo-political wall throughout history has failed, Hadrian's Wall, the Berlin Wall, the Great Wall of China, the West Bank Barrier, the 'Peace Walls' of Northern Ireland, even Australia's famous rabbit-proof fence failed! The rabbits had already made their way west before the fence was completed, and the rest just climbed over or burrowed under it. Human history is rooted in migration, the civilisations we consider most sophisticated arose where human traffic was at its heaviest. In ancient Greece unrestricted movement was considered one of four freedoms distinguishing liberty from slavery.

For perspective - human existence spans at least 200,000 years, yet we've been using passports, borders and the nation state for only a few hundred years. Maybe we should see borders and states for what they are - failed experiments, and in many cases a consequence of the colonial carvery. During the 1800s and 1900s in Africa for example, in a bid to save conflict amongst European powers, they started to draw border lines across the continent, to amass land and resources, without any regard for natural boundaries or cultural borders. The 38th parallel, probably the world's most militarised border, which currently divides North and South Korea was scribbled on a National Geographic wall map by a couple of Americans who barely knew where the peninsula was. In 1947, according to the memoirs of the pro-zionist Swedish UN diplomat Dr. Paul Mohn, he drew the Israel/Palestine partition map working late into the night in under a week. A land where we today see the most gross violation of Article 13 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights - Right to freedom of movement - Everyone has the right to freedom of movement and residence within the borders of each State. But, even within this great article designed to ensure equality, if you take a closer look at it, you'll see that within one sentence we are given the right to freedom of movement, and before the sentence is over, it is again taken away from us. We're free, depending on and restricted by where we happen to be born. These are just a few examples to hopefully illustrate, in my view, the fickle and destructive nature of borders. I'm happy to hear arguments for borders and the nation state, this rant is to simply encourage the question - Are borders necessary and can we live in a world without them?

    Break walls, build bridges.
