  • 12 Songs that Shaped the Struggle | Apartheid SA

During the apartheid era in South Africa, the role of music and performing musicians played a crucial role in lighting the social fire that lead to the undermining and eventual downfall of the apartheid regime.

In those years, song was a communal act of expression and one of the most potent weapons against colonialism and oppression. It played a major role in the eventual downfall of Apartheid and the foundation of a Democratic South Africa.

In Mandela's autobiography, Long Walk to Freedom Mandela himself said that they used to sing in the quarry which made the work lighter and he was known to have loved music and song.

All in all, these protest songs played a number of roles: a cultural role, political role, mobilizing role and a narrative role. The aim of this video is to educate the world and the new South Africa on the importance of song in 'Mzansi's' history. Enjoy!

    1. Senzeni Na? // ‘What have we done?’ is the chilling question posed by this anti-apartheid song. (0:48)
    2. Thina sizwe esimnyama. // We the black nation. (1:48)
    3. Pasopa Verwoerd // Becareful Verwoerd (2:30)
    4. Mayihlome ihlasele // Let us take up arms (3:36)
    5. Yinde lendlala esihambayo // The road we've embarked on is a long one. (4:24)
    6. Somlandela // We shall follow him (5:08)
    7. I am a Communist (5:34)
    8. Siyaya // We will go (6:11)
    9. Nongqongqo / To Those We Love - Miriam Makeba (6:48)
    10. Oliver Tambo (8:45)
    11. iYoh Solomon (10:10)
    12. Long Walk to Freedom - Thetha noBotha // Talk with Botha (10:58)

  • The Rockets - Thank you, thank you

South African band formed in Cape Town in 1968. They were well known for their dance routines and colourful outfits on stage, and for their harmonies. The initial members were:

    • George Carelse – lead guitar
    • Robbie Jansen – guitar, sax, flute
    • John (Molly) Barron – lead guitar
    • Frank Brown – bass, sax
    • Bones Delight - vocals

In 1969 they won the Battle of the Bands competition in Cape Town. They also toured South African and Namibia before going to England in 1969, where they appeared on Top Of The Pops with Tom Jones and The Marmalade. They then supported John Lennon's Plastic Ono Band at the Marquee, and performed at Blazes and Revolution, leading rock venues in London at the time. They were also the supporting act for Creedence Clearwater Revival on their European tour.

On returning to South Africa, Carelse and Jansen were replaced by:

    • Gerry Watt - guitar
    • Cliffie Valentine - keyboards

They appeared at the Woodstock, Cape Town, festivals of 1978 and 1979, and supported The Hues Corporation on their South African tour. In 1981 they toured the country with Tavares (and Champion Jack Dupree), the O'Jays and Curtis Mayfield, and in 1982 were the first South African group to perform in the Sun City Superbowl, backing Leo Sayer. In 1984 Ronnie Joyce joined the band on vocals, and in later years Ricardo, Theo Watt, Marlon Roach and Angie Erasmus were all members of the band.

This song is from the album Thank You, Thank You, released in 1986. The album contains 8 maxi singles.

  • Uhambo - Warongx - South African Blues

Artist: Warongx is a Afro-Blues band from the United States of Khayellisha, Cape Town, South Africa

    Song: Uhambo

    Music Genre: South African Blues

Music styles emerging from Africa since the 2000s:

    Blues Rock

The Blues Rock scene has dramatically emerged In South Africa. Albert Frost, Dan Patlansky, The Black Cat Bones, Crimson House and Boulevard Blues band are some of the most prominent blues acts in South-Africa. Figures like Piet Botha and Valiant Swart have largely contributed to the South-African Blues and Rock scene.

Kwaito is based on house music beats, but typically at a slower tempo and containing melodic and percussive African samples which are looped, deep basslines and often vocals, generally male, shouted or chanted rather than sung or rapped. Many consider it South Africa's unique implementation of hip hop.

In a resurgence that has been linked by some to freedom from Apartheid guilt, Afrikaans music saw a surge in new artists, album releases and sales after 2000... In 2004 an Afrikaans album (by balladeer Steve Hofmeyr) was named best-selling album of the year. The massive purchasing power of the Afrikaner minority is partly to thank for this.

In 2007 an Afrikaans song about Boer War general Koos de la Rey by Bok van Blerk became a hit amid fierce debate on whether it represented a call to arms for the reinstatement of Afrikaner rule or just expressed cultural nostalgia.[6]

While the boom in the Afrikaans pop industry has continued from the previous decade through the popularity of arts festivals and dance halls, other Afrikaans music genres experienced a revival of sorts in the new millennium. Rock and alternative Afrikaans music had stagnated somewhat after the heady days of the Voëlvry tour and the alternative movement. Signs of a revival could be found in the arrival of Karen Zoid on the music scene due to her distinct alternative sound.

Shortly afterwards, a band of young rockers called Fokofpolisiekar became the first group to create alternative rock in Afrikaans. Their controversial name (translated as Fuckoffpolicecar), statements and behaviour drew much public attention, making them a symbol of the Afrikaans Rock revival movement. Lead singer Francois Van Coke and songwriter Hunter Kennedy have gone on to explore other genres of music also not previously popular in Afrikaans and have ventured into more commercial routes.

Shortly after the arrival of this and other rock acts, the first Afrikaans television music channel was opened which focused mainly on rock music. The Afrikaans (and English) rock and alternative music scene has been booming ever since. Bands like Battery9, Terminatrix, NuL, K.O.B.U.S. and Thys Nywerheid continue to reinvent alternative Afrikaans music, while Jack Parow has continued the Cape's development of Afrikaans rap from pioneers Brasse vannie Kaap, finding success as far afield as Holland with his 2009 single Cooler as Ekke.

Through all the days that eat away
At every breath that I take
Through all the nights I've lain alone
    In someone else's dream, awake

All the words in truth we have spoken
That the wind has blown away
It's only you that remains with me
Clear as the light of day

O Siyeza, o siyeza , sizofika webaba noma
(we are coming, we are coming, we will arrive soon)
O siyeza, o siyeza, siyagudle lomhlaba
(we are coming, we are coming, we are moving across this earth)
    Siyawela lapheshaya lulezontaba ezimnyama
(we are crossing over those dark mountains)
    Lapha sobheka phansi konke ukhulupheka
(where we will lay down our troubles)

A punch drunk man in a downtown bar
Takes a beating without making a sound
Through swollen eyes he sways and smiles
'Cause no one can put him down

Inside of him a boy looks up to his father
For a sign or an approving eye
Oh, it's funny how those once so close and now gone
Can still so affect our lives

O Siyeza, o siyeza , sizofika webaba noma
(we are coming, we are coming, we will arrive soon)
O siyeza, o siyeza, siyagudle lomhlaba
(we are coming, we are coming, we are moving across this earth)
    Siyawela lapheshaya lulezontaba ezimnyama
(we are crossing over those dark mountains)
    Lapha sobheka phansi konke ukhulupheka
(where we will lay down our troubles)

Take me now, don't let go
Hold me close, I'm coming home

O Siyeza, o siyeza , sizofika webaba noma
(we are coming, we are coming, we will arrive soon)
O siyeza, o siyeza, siyagudle lomhlaba
(we are coming, we are coming, we are moving across this earth)
    Siyawela lapheshaya lulezontaba ezimnyama
(we are crossing over those dark mountains)

    About the Ndlovu Youth Choir:
Can participation in a music program change the lives of even the world’s most disadvantaged children? The choristers of the Ndlovu Youth Choir are living proof that it certainly can. This vibrant youth choral ensemble chants, harmonizes, and tip-toe-taps their way through a powerful 11-language repertoire that includes a sampling of all things South Africa: from isicathamiya (is-caht-a-MEE-ya), the a cappella genre accompanied only by body percussion, made famous by Ladysmith Black Mambazo, to ancient tribal chants, contemporary gospel, Afro-pop and Afro-jazz from the repertoires of Hugh Masekela and Miriam Makeba, and uplifting choral music written exclusively for the choir.
Founded in 2009, this exuberant group has toured southern Africa and Europe with their multi-sensorial performances to significant critical and audience acclaim. The members are selected by audition from the young people from the Ndlovu Care Group, a community program providing healthcare, early childhood education, after-school activities, and more to rural Moutse, Limpopo, South Africa. Program directors find that, because of the time commitment of the choir, as well as the values of self-discipline, self- confidence, and leadership that participation imbues, choristers have lower rates of drug use, delinquency, and teen pregnancy than their peers.
It’s about more than just staying out of trouble, though. The choir offers an early pathway to artistic and professional achievement that is so often only available to children from affluent backgrounds, but it also offers a connection to the children’s ancestral roots and allows them to share those cultural roots with the world. It’s a profound gift in both directions, and one which the singers themselves say fills them with hope: for a better life and for a better world.

    About Wouter Kellerman

I hear the drums echoing tonight
But she hears only whispers of some quiet conversation
    She's coming in twelve-thirty flight
Her moonlit wings reflect the stars that guide me towards salvation
I stopped an old man along the way
Hoping to find some old forgotten words or ancient melodies
He turned to me as if to say: Hurry boy, it's waiting there for you

It's gonna take a lot to drag me away from you
There's nothing that a hundred men or more could ever do
I bless the rains down in Africa
Gonna take some time to do the things we never had

  • Watershed - Dont Give Up

Arguably one of South Africa's best-loved bands, Watershed, is back in 2014 with a brand new single, 'Don't Give Up'. The first single to be released from the band's forthcoming album, will be the 5th since Craig Hinds started Watershed back in 2000.

'Don't Give Up' is the simple but powerful message. Hanging in, despite the ups and downs life throws. There is always 'one more mile to cover, one more fire to fight', but digging deep means, that on the other side things will look brighter and have more worth as a result of the hard times endured. The song is backed by elements of a gospel choir, adding further inspiration to the already powerful message in the lyrics.

The single was produced by JB Arthur and Craig Hinds, who has maintained his position as the band's front man and pianist for the last 14 years. The other band members are Howie Combrink on drums, Gideon Botes on guitars and James Sunney on bass.

  • South Sudan Army Brass Band Playing Its Famous Revolutionary Salam Muzika

The Sudan People’s Liberation Army (SPLA) is the army of the Republic of South Sudan. South Sudan army is not yet renamed since South Sudan seceded from the Sudan in 2011.The SPLA was formed in 1983; the Second Sudanese Civil War. It rigorously waged 22 year bloody insurgency against the Arabs; Khartoum-based national Islamic front (NIF) government of the Sudan. Throughout the most devastating longest civil war in the world, the SPLA was spearheaded by Col. Dr John Garang De Mabior. John Garang died in a chopper air crash in 2005 and General Salva Kiir Mayardit became the new Commander-in-Chief of the SPLA in the interim era of Southern Sudan self-rule, and eventually peddled the South to independence. The SPLA had remained the only pristine hope that would liberate Southerners from the Sudanese Arabs bondage. Its liberation struggle mission unequivocally culminated into the birth of the Republic of South Sudan on July 9th, 2011. According to Global Firepower, South Sudan, or rather the SPLA is ranked among top eighteen most powerful armies in Africa, just within four years of independence. The SPLA brass band with its renowned 'Salam muzika' played an epicenter in boosting the SPLA morale during the liberation armed struggle against North Sudan Arabs' belligerent jihadist regimes of Omar Hassan Al-Bashir, Gaafar Muhammad Nimeiry, and Swar Al-Dahab.
