  • Chicco - I Need Some Money - Original Copy

    6:36

This was Chicco's first hit. Released in 1986. The video was shot in Louis Fouché's studio in downtown Johannesburg. The two young dancers (not the young kids) were dancing a new 'ghetto' style that later became the famous 'Mapantsula' style. The back up singers are Tsidi, Tiny and Makie. This production caused a stir in the industry and all local artists wanted videos like I Need Some Money'. The story hit a nerve in the community as most people were struggling, Chicco voiced it. DOP Pierre Hinch, styled beautifully as always by Leigh VD Merwe, written, direct and edited by Makhlari. It was shot on U-matic Hi-band believe it or not. Record co is Dephon, music produced by Phil Hollis. Video produced by S&H Films.

Arab melodies from Zanzibar with the queen of Taarab, the 93 year old Bi Kidude
Founded in 1958, the Culture Musical Club is Zanzibar’s premier taarab club. The
orchestra performs widely at concerts in Zanzibar town, but also frequently travels
overland with a fold-up stage and an electricity generator to bring its music to the
rural areas as well. The club has released hundreds of songs on the local market and
since 1988 they have had six releases on the international market. The orchestra has
    had highly successful tours all over Europe in 1996, 1998, 2000, 2002, 2004, 2005
and 2007; in September 2006 they toured the US to high acclaim, in July 2007 the
club performed in Japan. A North American tour is planned for the 2008-2009
season. Besides taarab, many club members are also active in kidumbak groups, smaller ensembles that play a more down-home dance-focused music. Both types of music are played on stage, contrasting the serene sound of orchestral taarab to the festive and sexually charged dance that is kidumbak.
On its tours the club regularly features invited guest singers. The summer 2009 will include the legendary 93 year old Bi Kidude, the veteran diva of Zanzibar, who is now in her mid-90s but is still famous for breaking taboos, both in her sexually-explicit lyrics and her bravery for daring to sing with her face uncovered.

    Rajab Suleiman, qanun, kidumbak
    Ali Hassan, oud, violin, cherewa
    Kesi Juma, violin
    Makame Faki, vocals, violin
    Taimour Rukuni, accordion, mkwasa
    Mahmoud Juma, bass, cherewa
    Amour Haji, dumbak, sanduku
    Foum Faki, bongos, kidumbak
    Rukia Ramadhani, vocals, chorus
    Fatma Juma, chorus, dance, rika
    Bi Kidude, vocals
    Mgeni Khamis, chorus, dance

Bi Kidude (Fatuma binti Baraka), singer, born around 1910; died 17 April 2013

    Lyrics:

I hear the drums echoing tonight
But she hears only whispers of some quiet conversation
    She's coming in twelve-thirty flight
Her moonlit wings reflect the stars that guide me towards salvation
I stopped an old man along the way
Hoping to find some old forgotten words or ancient melodies
He turned to me as if to say: Hurry boy, it's waiting there for you

It's gonna take a lot to drag me away from you
There's nothing that a hundred men or more could ever do
I bless the rains down in Africa
Gonna take some time to do the things we never had

    About the Ndlovu Youth Choir:
Can participation in a music program change the lives of even the world’s most disadvantaged children? The choristers of the Ndlovu Youth Choir are living proof that it certainly can. This vibrant youth choral ensemble chants, harmonizes, and tip-toe-taps their way through a powerful 11-language repertoire that includes a sampling of all things South Africa: from isicathamiya (is-caht-a-MEE-ya), the a cappella genre accompanied only by body percussion, made famous by Ladysmith Black Mambazo, to ancient tribal chants, contemporary gospel, Afro-pop and Afro-jazz from the repertoires of Hugh Masekela and Miriam Makeba, and uplifting choral music written exclusively for the choir.
Founded in 2009, this exuberant group has toured southern Africa and Europe with their multi-sensorial performances to significant critical and audience acclaim. The members are selected by audition from the young people from the Ndlovu Care Group, a community program providing healthcare, early childhood education, after-school activities, and more to rural Moutse, Limpopo, South Africa. Program directors find that, because of the time commitment of the choir, as well as the values of self-discipline, self- confidence, and leadership that participation imbues, choristers have lower rates of drug use, delinquency, and teen pregnancy than their peers.
It’s about more than just staying out of trouble, though. The choir offers an early pathway to artistic and professional achievement that is so often only available to children from affluent backgrounds, but it also offers a connection to the children’s ancestral roots and allows them to share those cultural roots with the world. It’s a profound gift in both directions, and one which the singers themselves say fills them with hope: for a better life and for a better world.

    About Wouter Kellerman
Globe-trotting flutist and composer Wouter Kellerman received a 2015 Grammy® Award for his collaborative album 'Winds of Samsara'.
His next album 'Love Language' debuted at nr. 1 on the World Music Billboard charts and received a Grammy® nomination for Best Contemporary Instrumental Album, Kellerman’s second nomination in as many years.
Kellerman has also been recognised at home, winning seven SAMA’s (South African equivalent to the Grammy), reinforcing his status as one of South Africa’s foremost musicians. Delighting audiences with a magnetic alchemy of warmth and technical mastery, Kellerman finds his inspiration in the spaces between cultures and countries, genres and disciplines.
Passionate about teaching and empowering young people, Kellerman has sponsored the SOS Children’s Village for the past 17 years.

  • Clout - Substitute • TopPop

    3:24

Clout was an original all-female South African rock group formed in Johannesburg in 1977, best known for their hit single, Substitute.

Clout's first and biggest hit, Substitute, was a new arrangement of a Righteous Brothers song, composed by Willie Wilson. In 1978, their version reached No. 1 in South Africa, New Zealand, Germany, France, the Netherlands, Sweden, Austria, Denmark and Belgium. It also reached No. 2 on the UK Singles Chart and remained in the UK charts for 15 weeks. Due to sanctions against South African artists and performers by UK's Equity at the time, the BBC's Top of the Pops TV programme used the group's performance of the song on the Dutch TV programme TopPop from 8 April 1978 to present the hit song for its top ten countdown.

A major success in Europe, Clout scored more Top 10 singles, notably Save Me, You've Got All of Me and Under Fire.

The Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis kicks off Opening Weekend in Rose Theater with a musical celebration of South African democracy, 25 years after apartheid's end. Top South African musicians will join the orchestra to perform essential South African music, with each song chosen by a guest performer and newly arranged for the show by the JLCO.

South Africa has long been a vibrant and unique jazz hub, and most of the guests featured tonight helped shape the sound of jazz as a new South Africa was being born—and the music performed this evening reflects the sound of a nation defining itself anew.

  • Bonnie Tyler - Lost In France

    3:50

Official remastered HD video for 'Lost In France' by Bonnie Tyler.

Bonnie Tyler's second single 'Lost In France' was her first hit, making number 9 in the UK, number 3 in Germany and number two in South Africa in late 1976.

The track appears on Bonnie debut LP, 'The World Starts Tonight'.

    Lyrics:

    I was lost in France
In the fields the birds were singing
    I was lost in France
And the day was just beginning
As I stood there in the morning rain
    I had a feeling I can't explain
I was lost in France in love
    I was lost in France
In the street a band was playing
    And the crowd all danced
Didn't catch what they were saying
When I looked up he was standing there
    And I knew I shouldn't but I didn't care
I was lost in France in love
Ooh la la la ooh la la la dance
    Ooh la la la dancing
Ooh la la la ooh la la la dance
    Ooh la la la dancing
Ooh la la la ooh la la la dance
    Ooh la la la dancing
    I was lost in France
    And the vines were over-flowing
    I was lost in France
And a million stars were glowing
And I looked round for a telephone
To say 'baby I won't be home'
I was lost in France in love
Ooh la la la ooh la la la dance
    Ooh la la la dancing
Ooh la la la ooh la la la dance
    Ooh la la la dancing
Ooh la la la ooh la la la dance
    Ooh la la la dancing
And I looked round for a telephone
To say 'baby I won't be home'
I was lost in France in love
Ooh la la la ooh la la la dance
    Ooh la la la dancing
Ooh la la la ooh la la la dance
    Ooh la la la dancing

    Lyrics:

To the left, to the left
To the left, to the left
To the left, to the left

Everything you own in the box to the left
In the closet that's my stuff
Yes, if I bought it, please don't touch
And keep talking that mess that's fine
But could you walk and talk at the same time
And, it's my name that's on that jag
So come move your bags, let me call you a cab

    Standing in the front yard
Tellin' me, how I'm such a fool
Talkin' 'bout, I'll never ever find a man like you
    You got me twisted

You must not know about me, you must not know about me
I could have another you in a minute
Matter of fact, he'll be here in a minute, baby
You must not know about me, you must not know about me
I can have another you by tomorrow
So don't you ever for a second get to thinking
    You're irreplaceable

Burning Bright ! - a short history of The Flames

The Flames were formed by brothers Steve Fataar on vocals and guitar and Edries (Brother) Fataar on vocals and bass, in Durban in 1963 under the management of Bing Kinsey. The band was originally augmented by George Faber on drums and Eugene Champion on guitar. Soon however Ricky Fataar joined on drums and Edries Fredericks took over on guitar and vocals. This formation recorded many 45's and the band's first album entitled Ummm! Ummm! Oh Yeah!!! after a Buddy Holly tune from his album Showcase.

Edries Fredericks left the band around 1966 in order to provide a more regular income and start a family. He was replaced by Mitchell (Baby) Duvall on guitar and vocals. They recorded the Flames' second album That's Enough released in early 1967. This album closed with the Flames first take at covering a 1959 Jerry Butler soul classic For Your Precious Love. During these early years the Flames grew in fame and stature, often winning band competitions and polls. At age 12 Ricky Fataar won the title of Best Rock Drummer in South Africa.

After Mitchell Duvall's departure, the Flames needed a new singer/guitarist. They invited Blondie Chaplin to join them for the recording of their third album Burning Soul! His amazing soulful voice and guitar playing helped change the band's direction to the classic Motown and Atlantic soul repertoire. This line-up went on to record their fourth and best album Soulfire in early 1968. This album featured their new version of For Your Precious Love with its unforgettable spoken introduction. This recording was released on a 45 which took the Flames to the top of the charts over much of Southern Africa during the middle of 1968.

In between Burning Soul and Soulfire The Flames also found time to help Una Valli record her masterpiece Soul Meeting by backing her on six of the twelve tracks.Thier collective version of Satisfaction gives Aretha Franklin something to think about ! Later that year they moved to London, where they played the club scene. It was at Blaise's that the Beach Boys' Al Jardine and Carl Wilson spotted them and later invited them to move to the United States and record for the Beach Boys own Brother label. They dropped the final letter from their name, becoming The Flame and started writing their own material. The album entitled simply The Flame was released in late 1970 and was the first ever rock album recorded in quadraphonic sound. It's a startling set of hard rockers, smooth ballads and power epics.

A second album was recorded but shelved after Steve Fataar and Edries (Brother) Fataar elected to return home. Ricky Fataar and Blondie Chaplin were later invited to become full-time members of The Beach Boys, staying for three albums, Carl And The Passions: So Tough, Holland and the double live set In Concert. All feature compositions by Ricky Fataar and Blondie Chaplin and all are well worth seeking out.

The Flames live on in their wonderful records, five albums and fifteen 45's in all. To this day their powerful and melodic playing and singing continues to thrill both old and new fans.

Way back in the 1970's the original master tapes for most of The Flames' records were sadly lost in a factory fire. Every effort has been made to return this wonderful music to you in the best possible sound quality by high-grade transcriptions from the best possible vinyl sources. Listen for yourself and judge if we have succeeded. Enjoy the Flames!
