Oct. 27, 2017 | Felix Contreras -- Natalia Lafourcade is a successful singer-songwriter whose voice and music live on the edge of pop, but maintain a distinct independence.

A few years ago, while Lafourcade was traveling Brazil, she felt a great nostalgia for her native Mexico and its folk music. When she finally returned home, she immediately called some friends for the kind of party that is ubiquitous in Latin America: lots of social drinking, lots of food and lots of guitars and singing. Classic folk songs were on the playlist and a good time was had by all.

Someone recorded the informal jam session and Lafourcade's management team heard the tapes. This is your next record! they told her.

That record, Musas: Un Homenaje al Folclore Latinoamericano en Manos de los Macorinos, Vol. 1, was a commercial and critical hit, and received a Latin Grammy nomination for Album of the Year. It only made sense for Lafourcade to bring her Musas tour to the Tiny Desk. The performances are an ode to a magical time in Mexican popular music, one that is revived with every note this singer and her band perform.

One important historical note: The two older gentlemen on the video are Juan Carlos Allende and Miguel Peña, two revered musicians who played with the iconic ranchera singer Chavela Vargas.

  • Danilo Brito: NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert

    17:32

Tom Cole | May 12, 2017 — After four chords, the notes start to fly — Danilo Brito and his four collaborators, three Brazilians and one American, are off like jackrabbits in front of a hound, having hustled their instruments to the Tiny Desk at the end of a North American tour.

Brito a 32-year-old mandolin player, made his first record when he was a teenager, plays a type of music called choro (pronounced shore-oo).

It's said that choro started in the streets and back yards and made its way to the concert hall. Brazilian musicians of all genres have drawn on choro, from popular composer Antonio Carlos Jobim to Heitor Villa Lobos, one of the giants of Latin American classical music. Its literal translation from the Portuguese is to cry, but in Brito's dextrous hands a better translation may be crying out to be heard.

You can hear Brito and his colleagues play their arrangement of Villa Lobos' Melodia Sentimental, originally written for voice and orchestra, behind the Tiny Desk, but what you're actually hearing is a kind of formal Rodas de Choro, the circles of players who developed this music more than a century ago and have carried it on to the present.

Only — in the backyards, they don't wear suits and ties.

    Danilo Brito is available now:

    LYRICS
    (Spanish)
De Alto Cedro voy para Marcané
Luego a Cueto voy para Mayarí.
    El cariño que te tengo
    Yo no lo puedo negar
    Se me sale la babita
    Yo no lo puedo evitar.
    Cuando Juanica y Chan Chan
    En el mar cernían arena
    Como sacudía el ‘jibe’
A Chan Chan le daba pena.
    Limpia el camino de paja
    Que yo me quiero sentar
    En aquel tronco que veo
    Y así no puedo llegar.
De Alto Cedro voy para Marcané
Luego a Cueto voy para Mayarí.

    (English)
    I’m going from Alto Cedro
    to Marcané
    Then from Cueto, I’m going
    to Mayarí.
The love I have for you I cannot deny
    My mouth is watering
    I just can’t help myself.
    When Juanika and Chan Chan
Sifted sand together on the beach
    How her bottom shook and
    Chan Chan was aroused!
    Clean the dry sugar cane
    leaves from the path
So I can get to that trunk
    I want to sit down.
    I’m going from Alto Cedro
    to Marcané
    Then from Cueto, I’m going
    to Mayarí.

  • Balkan Gypsy Music

    31:32

Romani music or Gipsy music is the music of the Romani people, who have their origins in northern India, but today live mostly in Europe. Historically nomadic, though now largely settled, the Romani people have long acted as entertainers and tradesmen. In many of the places Romanies live they have become known as musicians. The wide distances travelled have introduced a multitude of influences of Byzantine, Greek, Arabic, Indian, Persian, Turkish, Slavic, Romanian, German, Dutch, French, Spanish and even Jewish musical forms. It is difficult to define the parameters of a unified Romani musical style, as there are many differences in melodic, harmonic, rhythmic and formal structures from region to region. Lyrics to Romani songs are often sung in one or more dialects of the Romani language, and dance frequently accompanies Romani music performance.

The quintessentially Spanish flamenco is to a very large extent the music (and dance, or indeed the culture) of the Romani people of Andalusia. Apart from Romani music for local use, in Eastern Europe a separate Romani music originated for entertainment at parties and celebrations. This music drew its themes from Hungarian, Romanian, Russian and other sources. Later on it gained popularity in Western Europe, where many Romani orchestras were active, playing sophisticated melodies of East European origin. Most Romani music is based on the folk music of the countries where the Romani went through or settled. Local music is adopted and performed – usually instrumental – and, slowly, it is transformed into Romani styles, which are usually more complex than the original styles. In its turn, Romani music has greatly influenced the local music.

  • Bach meets Frederick the Great

    6:42

This clip is from a tv series in 4 parts from 1985 named Johann Sebastian Bach (an East German/Hungarian collaboration). The initial music at 0:00 - 0:48 is one of the King's own pieces: Flute Concerto No. 3 in C Major (1st movement, Allegro). The chromatic theme presented by the King at 2:42 - 3:17 formed the basis of Bach's Musical Offering (BWV 1079) in 16 movements. At 4:17 - 5:23 Bach plays the beginning of the movement Ricercare à 3.

    ==============================================
I have uploaded this video with English subtitles, as a gesture to all non-German speaking fans of Mr. Bach and/or King Frederick. Italian and Korean subtitles was added later. I think they add a lot of value for many viewers. Enjoy !
    ==============================================

From a desktop computer, click the first of 5 icons in the lower right corner of the video to turn them on or off. From an Ipad, click the icon in the upper right corner (3 dots), and then click Captions.

Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750) met the Prussian King Frederick II the Great (1712-1786) in May 1747. The meeting at the King's residence in Potsdam came about because Bach's son Carl Philipp Emanuel was employed there as court musician. Frederick wanted to show the elder Bach a novelty, the fortepiano, which had been invented some years earlier. The King owned several of the experimental instruments being developed by Gottfried Silbermann. During his visit, Bach, who was well known for his skill at improvising, received from Frederick a long and complex musical theme on which to improvise a three-voice fugue. He did so, but Frederick then challenged him to improvise a six-voice fugue on the same theme. Bach answered that he would need to work out the score and send it to the King afterwards.

Bach is played by Ulrich Thein (1930-1995) and Frederick by Hans-Jörn Weber (b. 1941). The clip appears at 8 min and 50 sek in part 4. In the last scene, after the king and his entourage have left, you see the musicians applauding and Bach's son Carl Philipp Emanuel comes to embrace his father.

    2. Are you with me

    3. Storms and Years

    4. The order of the stars

In a comment to above video, Jay Preis points out that many details in this clip are not historically correct:

In this video Bach Meets Frederick, the writers got many details of this historic meeting wrong. You might say they improvised. Bach improvised on the king's many Silbermann fortepianos, not on harpsichord. The writers improvised the notion that the king interrupted Bach before he could explain that he was well acquainted with Silbermann and his fortepianos, having tested them in the 1730s and having advised Silbermann to lighten the action and improve the high register. On the evening when Bach met the king (Sunday, May 7, 1747) at his Potsdam residence, the king played a fugue theme on fortepiano-- not flute--and asked Bach to improvise a fugue on the theme, which Bach did in 3 parts--on fortepiano not harpsichord, without interruption, and to the delight and approval of the king's many noble and distinguished guests. The NEXT evening, AFTER Bach had given an organ recital, the king asked Bach to improvise a 6-part fugue on the same theme. Bach declined, explaining that such a theme would require more preparation. Instead, Bach improvised a 6-part fugue on a theme of his own choosing, not on the king's theme. Also, while Bach is portrayed as a genius, the Prussian king is shown as an unpleasant arrogant boasting aristocrat, not grasping Bach's genius – a historically absolutely untrue depiction of Frederick, who was very much impressed by Bach and praised his unsurpassed abilities in a talk with the Austrian Count Swieten in 1774 – 27 years later and 24 years after Bach's death. The film, nevertheless is still one of, or even the best non-documentary film about Bachs life.

Another performance of same concerto can be found here:

Emmanuel Pahud plays the flute. His playing starting at 3 min and 27 sek corresponds to the beginning of this video clip.

This is an alternative version of Bach's visit with Frederick:

The visit starts at 15 min and 18 sek.

Listen to If The World Was Ending

    Official Video

    Lyrics
    I was distracted
    and in traffic
    I didn’t feel it
    when the earthquake happened

but it really got me thinkin’
    were you out drinkin’
were you in the living room
    chillin' watchin’ television
ah it’s been a year now
    think I've figured out how
how to let you go and let
    communication die out

I know you know we know you weren’t down for forever and it’s fine
I know you know we know we weren’t meant for each other and it’s fine

but if the world was ending
    you’d come over right
you’d come over and you’d stay the night
would you love me for the hell of it
all our fears would be irrelevant
    if the world was ending
    you’d come over right
the sky’d be falling and I’d hold you tight
and there wouldn’t be a reason why
we would even have to say goodbye
    if the world was ending
    you’d come over right
    Right?
    If the world was ending
    You’d come over right
    Right?

    I tried to imagine
    your reaction
didn’t scare me when the earthquake happened
But it really got me thinkin’
    that night we went drinkin’
    stumbled in the house
and didn’t make it past the kitchen
ah it’s been a year now
    think I've figured out how
    how to think about you
without it rippin’ my heart out

I know you know we know you weren’t down for forever and it’s fine
I know you know we know we weren’t meant for each other and it’s fine

  • Bonga - AFH534

    2:43

    Performance - 30 June 2007
Bonga was born in the province of Bengo, and left Angola when he was 23 years old to become an athlete, becoming the Portuguese record holder for the 400 metres (Angola was at the time one of Portugal's five African colonies). He had already begun his singing career at the age of 15.
Bonga abandoned athletics in 1972, concentrating solely on his music, and immediately became famous in his native Angola, as well as in Portugal. After the Carnation Revolution in April 1974, he would become a hit both with immigrants from the ex-Portuguese colonies, and Portuguese of both African and European descent. He has released over 30 albums, singing in Portuguese and traditional Angolan languages. His tracks are a mixture of Portuguese folk sounds, semba, kizomba and latin elements.
While Angola was still a Portuguese colony, Bonga was an outspoken supporter of independence. This led him to be exiled from Angola in the early 1970s.
At this time, Portugal was ruled by the authoritarian and conservative Estado Novo regime government, founded by Salazar. Bonga's status as a Portuguese star athlete allowed him the rare freedom of movement, which he used to carry messages between exiled pro-independence African fighters and compatriots still in Angola. As the movement for independence heated up, Bonga was forced into exile in Rotterdam, where, in 1972, he adopted the name Bonga Kwenda and recorded his first record, Angola 72. His iconic track Mona Ki Ngi Xica, which would feature on the soundtrack of Cédric Klapisch's 1996 film When the Cat's Away (Chacun cherche son chat), was introduced on this album. A warrant for his arrest was issued in Angola for the seditious lyrics of the album, forcing him to move nomadically between Germany, Belgium and France until Angola's independence from Portugal in 1975, brought about by the events of the Carnation Revolution. While in Europe, Bonga met other Portuguese-speaking musicians and adapted the sounds of samba to his already diverse music style.
After independence, the new Angolan government took Angola's best solo acts and founded and supported an orchestra called Semba Tropical. The purpose was to revive the lost music industry, as described by a People's Republic of Angola ministry spokesman during the band's tour in Europe in the mid-1980s: We had great problems because of the war for independence. When the Portuguese left they dismantled some of the basic structure by smashing and sabotaging equipment and we had to start from scratch. After independence there were no bands at all. Those which were formed were not active because they had no instruments. In good truth, the newly independent country, with good infrastructure for African standards at independence, and blessed with rich natural resources, was in fact badly mismanaged and plagued by corruption, failed central planning and multiethnic armed conflict for several decades after independence from Portugal.
After Angola's independence Bonga established his main residence in Lisbon, and lived for some time in Paris and Angola. As post-colonial life in Angola disintegrated into corruption, squalor, brutality, and an interminable and bloody civil war, Bonga remained critical of the political leaders on all sides. Bonga's voice of peace and conscience continues to make him a hero to the people of Angola no matter where he resides. He remains fiercely dedicated to the ideal of nonviolence, he states simply: We must live without harming others.

  • Salsero - Portuguese

    3:44

Salsero is a song that hopes to set a world record for the number of languages it will be recorded in. Singers from across India and around the world are invited to represent their language/state/country in this project. This is a non-commercial project that will bring the world together in one song.
Salsa was chosen as the theme as it is an infectious rhythm that’s popular all over the world.

If you are interested in joining in this project, and if you don't see your language already recorded so far, you can download the minus one at the end of the track list at the link below, available in two keys, the preferred key is D minor. You will then have to translate the English lyrics to your language as closely as possible. Next you record your voice against the minus one track and send us a raw file of only your voice track along with the lyrics text and a good profile photo to jazzgoa@yahoo.com
    It's as simple as that!
    Here's the project so far:

1497. Lisbon, Portugal. Navigator Vasco da Gama commands the first ship to sail from Europe to India. During the fifteenth century Portugal’s navigators are at the cutting edge of innovation and world discovery, their travel exploits feats of experimental technique. While Vasco da Gama discovered the world’s vastness and claimed it for Portugal, his travels made the world smaller.

Today the experimental musicians in Portugal are making discoveries every day, and opening new frontiers of electro-acoustic as well electronic music. This selection, made with the precious collaboration of André Quaresma, is the incontrovertible evidence of that marvelous travel.

Infinite thanks to all artists involved into the compilation. And special thanks to André Quaresma, for his fundamental collaboration.

  • Maria de Fatima - Guitarra Live in Theater de Kom Nieuwegein

    3:38

Maria de Fátima was born 1961 in Lisbon, Portugal. She began her professional music career at the age of 12 when she released her first album. In the following years she recorded another three albums. At the early age of 14, Maria de Fátima won the Grand Noite de Fado, the most prestigious award in the world of Fado. In Portugal, she shared the stage with some of the most renowned Fado-artists, like Amalia Rodriques, Jorge Fernando and Camané. She performed at the famous Maria Victoria Theater, for radio and TV and also in several Casinos in Portugal.

Now, Maria de Fátima lives in Amsterdam, The Netherlands where she performs in theatres and at famous venues like the Royal Concertgebouw (sold out !) in Amsterdam and the Vredenburg Music Centre in Utrecht. Also there have been international acclaimed performances in France, Belgium, Luxembourg and Germany. Over the years, thousands of people have enjoyed her concerts and Maria de Fátima has became one of the most respected fadistas of Europe.

In 2002 Maria de Fátima and her ensemble ROSÁRIO recorded the album FOI DEUS, which contains a surprising combination of traditional fado with folk- and new-age elements. It was released in The Netherlands and Portugal where it received excellent reviews in the press. In 2004 she was invited to be a special guest at the Noite de Fado concerts in Holland with Helder Moutinho and Joana Amendoeira. In August 2004 the album FADO VIVO was released, which is a live registration of the concerts Maria de Fátima gave with her new band in the spring of 2004 in the Netherlands. The album contains, besides well known classical fados and ballads, several acoustic versions of earlier recorded songs from the FOI DEUS album. According to press-reviews the album clarified that Maria de Fátima can compete with the great fadistas from Portugal and it has established her qualities on an international level.

In September 2006 Maria de Fátima and her band went to Portugal for their new album ALMA (label: Coast to Coast). It was recorded at the famous Pé de Vente-studio, where fadistas like Mariza, Ana Moura and Cristina Branco have recorded their best work. The famous singer / producer Helder Moutinho produced the album together with the young guitar virtuoso Diogo Clemente who also made some of the arrangements. Besides the excellent musicians of her own band some of the best Portugese Fado musicians like Diogo Clemente, Bernardo Couto and Fernado Araujo were invited to contribute. Most of the songs are Marias all time favorites of Amália Rodrigues but she also composed her own songs for the album. This resulted in a beautiful classic fado CD which the leading World-Music magazine HEAVEN describes as the best fado album of 2006

In 2007-2008, Maria de Fátimas theatre tour in Holland, was a tribute to the work & life of the great Amália Rodrigues.

In 2009 Maria toured through Holland with the famous Dutch singer Thé Lau. Together they gave over 30 concerts in Holland & Belgium.

In 2009-2010 Maria de Fátima once again appears on stage with her new theatre show MEMORIAS , named after her CD MEMORIAS DO FADO (released January 2009). The album contains a musical interpretation of her memories of Lisboa and Portugal.

Maria de Fátima is accompanied by the following musicians:

Daniël Raposo (Portugal) - Portuguese guitar
Aleix de Gispert (Spanje) - Classical guitar
Felix Hildenbrand (Duitsland) - Double bass
    Press-reviews:

  • COMO CANTAR OUSADO AMOR ???? Divisão de Vozes

    5:58

✨???????? SINA (FATE / Soul Food to Go) • DJAVAN✨ASMR MUSIC BACKGROUND????SEEK PEACE FEEL GOOD MUSIC????✨

Djavan was born in Maceió, Brazil to a white father of Dutch descent and a black mother. He later formed the group Luz, Som, Dimensão (LSD – Light, Sound, Dimension), playing Beatles' material. In 1973, Djavan moved to Rio de Janeiro and started singing soap opera soundtracks. His first album, A Voz, o Violão e a Arte de Djavan, was recorded in 1976 and included the hit song Flor de Lis. Stevie Wonder was a guest on the album Luz.

In 1999, his album Ao Vivo sold 1.2 million copies. In 2016, he was nominated for the 2016 Grammy Awards in the Record of the Year, Album of the Year, Best Portuguese Language Song and Best Singer-Songwriter Album categories. Djavan's compositions have been recorded by numerous musicians, including Al Jarreau, Carmen McRae and The Manhattan Transfer (Sina as Soul Food to Go).

    O luar, estrela do mar
O sol e o dom, quiçá, um dia a fúria
    Desse front virá lapidar
O sonho até gerar o som
Como querer Caetanear o que há de bom
    O luar, estrela do mar
O sol e o dom, quiçá, um dia a fúria
    Desse front virá lapidar

  • Maria de Fatima - Hortelã Mourisca Live in Theater de Kom Nieuwegein

    3:00

  • Pedro Jorge Avondano: Divertimento da Camera III - Ludovice Ensemble

    7:33

    Pedro Jorge Avondano (fl.c.1720-c.1750) :
Divertimento III: Adagio - Allegro - Largo - Allegro
    (Divertimenti da Camera, 1748)

    Ludovice Ensemble
    Joana Amorim: Traverso
    Lilia Slavny: Violin
    Diana Vinagre: Cello
    Fernando Miguel Jalôto: Harpsichord

Dears, this is the 2nd of our curiosities on Portuguese Baroque Music. Pedro Jorge [Pietro Giorgio] Avondano is vaguely known in Portuguese Musicology as father of Pedro António Avondano, and the patriarch of the Avondano family, who provided Portugal with a true dynasty of excellent musicians, both composers and performers, until the end of the 18th century.

Pedro Jorge was Genoese, leader of the Orquestra da Real Câmara - the Portuguese Court Orchestra - in the 1st half of the 18th century and until now only 2 pieces by him were known - 2 string symphonies, usually wrongly attributed to his more famous son.

Ludovice Ensemble was able to identify a manuscript dated from 1748 - when he was active in Lisbon! - with 6 Divertimenti da Camera for 2 violins and basso continuo (although the 1st violin part often fits well for a transverse flute or a oboe). The source is in Germany and includes, among other works, sonatas in trio by G. F. Handel, which somehow indicates the good opinion on Pedro Jorge's music.

We hope you enjoy this recording - once more, it's a LIVE one, without any editing, and the sound quality is, unfortunately, far from ideal... still, it's a beautiful piece of music, and a chance to discover a little more about Portuguese Baroque Music!
