  • Popular polish song, Gdańsk, Pomeranian, Poland, Europe

    1:01

Polish folk music was collected in the 19th century by Oskar Kolberg, as part of a wave of Polish national revival. With the coming of the world wars and then the Communist state, folk traditions were oppressed or subsumed into state-approved folk ensembles. The most famous of the state ensembles are Mazowsze and Slask, both of which still perform. Though these bands had a regional touch to their output, the overall sound was a homogenized mixture of Polish styles. There were more authentic state-supported groups, such as Słowianki, but the Communist sanitized image of folk music made the whole field seem unhip to young audiences, and many traditions dwindled rapidly. Polish dance music, especially the mazurka and polonaise, were popularized by Frederick Chopin, and they soon spread across Europe and elsewhere. These are triple time dances, while five-beat forms are more common in the northeast and duple-time dances like the krakowiak come from the south. The polonaise comes from the French word for Polish to identify its origin among the Polish aristocracy, who had adapted the dance from a slower walking dance called chodzony. The polonaise then re-entered the lower-class musical life, and became an integral part of Polish music.

  • Perfect - Nie płacz Ewka

    5:44

Song: Nie płacz Ewka (Don't cry Ewka)
    Band: Perfect
    Album: Perfect
    Year: 1981
    Genre: rock
    Country: Poland

    ---
    Notes:

    1) Ewka - informal form of the name Ewa (Eva)
    2) TV, furniture, a small Fiat, that's the fondest dream - I suppose this part can sound ridiculous to many people, but in times when Poland was under communist/Soviet Union control (1944-1989) these things were really considered luxury goods, especially cars. Usually, after someone ordered a car, he had to wait for years to get it, because there were always not enough cars and too many buyers. As for Fiat, it was one of the most popular car brands.

  • Tulia - Nothing Else Matters

    4:05

In December, a year passed from the beginning of our musical adventure. Just before Christmas, in 2017, we stood in front of the camera for the first time. Nothing Else Matters by Metallica - is one of the first songs sung together. This is Tulia's band - our story. On the occasion of the anniversary we want to share it with you. For votes cast at the Opole Festival, for the platinum album ... but above all for the presence at our concerts. Thank you very much!

  • DAGADANA - Welcome to Polish-Ukrainian World of Music

    2:28

“There’s never been a treatment of Polish and Ukrainian traditional music like it.” (fRoots Magazine)
Since 2008 DAGADANA has triumphantly merged elements of Polish and Ukrainian culture through jazz, electronic, and world music. It all started with a jazz workshop in Cracow, where a mutual love for music has become a spark that ignited a great friendship and lead to the formation of the band.
Poland and Ukraine are neighbouring countries, both of Slavic origins, with similar languages and customs. When exploring these roots in search for musical inspirations, you will find a multitude of surprising similarities and differences that emphasize their uniqueness. This is exactly what you will find in the songs of DAGADANA, a band that attempts to blur the boundaries and build bridges that will connect both nations (since, as it is known, the dynamics between them would vary a lot).

DAGADANA have found their inspiration in numerous sources: modern electronic, jazz, contemporary music, roots music found amongst their families and friends, at ethnic music workshops, as well as on the bookshelves of their friends and families.

From the very beginning, their philosophy has been based on meeting and exchanging music and art experiences from all over the world while being the ambassadors of Polish and Ukrainian cultures. Thanks to that, you can experience their cooperation on records, or enjoy it at the concerts with local musicians in different parts of the world.

DAGADANA won polish most prestigious Fryderyk Award in the World Music Album of the Year and was nominated for the Phonographic Debut of the Year.
They released 4 albums. The latest one “Meridian 68” album hit #48 at World Music Charts Europe and #14 at the Transglobal World Music Charts.

“The clash between the jazzy, pop and classical elements with the deep folk material. Imaginative ar- rangements bring out the strong traditional melodies. Illustration of the adventurous music coming out of Eastern Europe.”
    Songlines Magazine

DAGADANA played concerts in places such as Moroccan deserts, The Forbidden City in China, at the Brazilian Virada Cultural, and at numerous other spots.
More than 700 concerts. 22 countries.

    =====================================
I'd like to present you some gothic rock, post punk and darkwave bands from Poland. Goth scene in this country isn't as well developed as in Germany or in Great Britain so I think that promotion of those bands is a good idea and can contribute to growth of interest in this genre of music in Poland. Also, I would like to facilitate people to finding new gothic bands.

I would be grateful for comments, ratings, suggestions and subscriptions. Thanks for watching!

  • Polish Song of Jemenite Jews

    4:20

Composers: Henoch Kohn, Moshe Wileński, Hebrew lyrics: Natan Alterman
Vocal: Olga Mieleszczuk, Lira: Boaz Galili, Saz: Ittai Binnun, video: Marcin Koźlinski
    arrangement: Olga Mieleszczuk

Two combined songs a la orientale, one was sung by Hanka Ordonówna in Warsaw in 30-thies and second by Soshana Damari in late 40-thies in Tel Aviv. Both written by Polish composers, inspired by Jemen Jews folklore. Great example of orientalism.
Composer of the first one Henoch Kohn came from Lodz and was part of artistic group Yung Yidish. He composed music to the famous movie The Dybbuk based on the celebrated play of the same name by S. Ansky.
Second was written by Moshe Wileński, who left Warsaw already in 30-thies and immigrated to Palestine. Together with Natan Alterman - also from Warsaw - they created first Hebrew cabaret Li-La-Lo (For me, for her, for you), which was inspired by cabarets from Warsaw.

    1. Moja dziewczyna patrzy często w oczy me i nie ukrywam - sprawia to przyjemność.

    2:58

Jimmy Sturr is a polka musician, trumpeter/clarinetist/saxophonist and leader of Jimmy Sturr & His Orchestra. His recordings have won 18 out of the 24 Grammy Awards given for Best Polka Album. Sturr's orchestra is on the Top Ten List of the All-Time Grammy Awards, and has acquired more Grammy nominations than anyone in the history of musical polka awards. His band is arguably the most popular polka band in America, and have their own TV show on the RFD-TV network, a network devoted to rural America.

Although Sturr is the Irish son of a local bank president, his fans don't seem to mind the I'm Polish persona that he radiates.

  • Johnny Comes Late at MULTIKULTI

    1:39

JohnnyComesLate was formed in 2006 by vocalist/guitarist Janusz Johnny Klonowski and bassist Tadek Tajahlay Majewski. Searching for a unique sound in music they tried to achieve it with a combination of inspiration and experience. Johnny has collaborated with many famous Polish musicians including cold wave master and EMI recording artist Robert Gawlinski of Wilki. Along with Bobi Peru he was also a founder of Novo del Arte. Tajahlay developed his style by playing in the legendary Immanuel and focusing on reggae music. Together they started rehearsing and composing in a practice space on the Chicago's west side joined by trumpeter JohannKokosJanoschka. Something was still missing in their music. They invited Jarek Jerry Lukomski over for a jam session. Jerry, who has been drumming for over 25 years with many revered bands and musicians from the eastern block, brought the needed edge to JCL's music. The line up was established and soon the band recorded their first EP- American Dreams. Johann Janoschka then leaves the band in fall of 2008. In 2009 the band admitted another vocalist, Anna Toyah Tarnowska, who gained experience by collaborating with numerous musicians back in Europe, and then singing in several projects in the Chicago land area. Explosive energy and a huge range of her voice are become very important features of JCL music. At the turn of 2011 Toyah leaves JCL and band start to reinvent its sound. A new member- Andrzej Balawender adds more color to the mix.As of today JohnnyComesLate is: Johnny on guitar and vocal, Tajahlay on bass guitar, Jerry on drums and Balawender on Violin and Keyboards. The band collaborates with many outstanding Chicago musicians such a trumpet player Corey Wilkes or producer/ keyboardist Adub. JCL experiments with various genres and eras, getting inspiration from the early 70's sounds of Pink Floyd, to 80's new wave/ alternative acts such as The Police and Jane's Addiction and turn of century Electronica. They mix punk rock energy with harmonies of modern jazz. You can see them play in venues throughout Chicago, in places like Reggies, Cafe Lura, Rockbox, Double Door and Martyrs.

Every breath you take and every move you make
Every bond you break, every step you take, I'll be watching you
Every single day, every word you say
Every game you play, every night you stay, I'll be watching you

Oh can't you see, you belong to me
How my poor heart aches with every step you take

Every move you make and every vow you break
Every smile you fake, every claim you stake, I'll be watching you

Since you've gone I've been lost without a trace
I dream at night I can only see your face
    I look around, but it's you I can't replace
I feel so cold and I long for your embrace
I keep crying baby, baby, please

Oh can't you see, you belong to me
How my poor heart aches with every step you take

Every move you make and every vow you break

    ======= Uprising SONG STORY =======

The Warsaw Uprising (Polish: powstanie warszawskie) was a major World War II operation by the Polish Resistance home Army to liberate Warsaw from Nazi Germany. The rebellion was timed to coincide with the Soviet Union’s Red Army approaching the eastern suburbs of the city and the retreat of German forces. However, the Soviet advance stopped short, enabling the Germans to regroup and demolish the city while defeating the Polish resistance, which fought for 63 days with little outside support. The Uprising was the largest single military effort taken by any European resistance movement during WW2.
The uprising began on 1 August 1944 and the Poles initially established control over most of central Warsaw but the Soviets ignored Polish attempts to establish radio contact and did not advance beyond the city limits. Intense street fighting between the Germans and Poles continued.
Although the exact number of casualties remains unknown, it is estimated that about 16,000 members of the Polish resistance were killed and about 6,000 badly wounded. In addition, between 150,000 and 200,000 Polish civilians died, mostly from mass executions. Jews being harboured by Poles were exposed by German house-to-house clearances and mass evictions of entire neighbourhoods. German casualties totalled over 8,000 soldiers killed and missing, and 9,000 wounded.

    ======= Uprising LYRICS =======

    Warsaw Rise!

Do you remember when, when the Nazis forced their rule on Poland 1939 and the allies turned away
From the underground rose a hope of freedom as a whisper
City in despair, but they never lost their faith

    Women, men and children fight
they were dying side by side
And the blood they shed upon the streets
    was a sacrifice willingly paid

    Warsaw city at war
    Voices from underground

    whispers of freedom
    1944 help that never came
    Calling Warsaw city at war
    Voices from underground

    whispers of freedom
Rise up and hear the call
    History calling to you
    ‘Warszawo, walcz!’

    Spirit soul and heart
in accordance with the old traditions
1944 still the allies turn away
    Fighting street to street
in a time of hope and desperation
Did it on their own and they never lost their faith

    Women, men and children fight
they were dying side by side
And the blood they shed upon the streets
    was a sacrifice willingly paid

    Warsaw city at war
    Voices from underground

    whispers of freedom
    1944 help that never came
    Calling Warsaw city at war
    Voices from underground

    whispers of freedom
Rise up and hear the call
    History calling to you
    ‘Warszawo, walcz!’

    [2x]
All the streetlights in the city
    broken many years ago
Break the curfew, hide in sewers
Warsaw it’s time to rise now

    Warsaw city at war
    Voices from underground

    whispers of freedom
    1944 help that never came
    Calling Warsaw city at war
    Voices from underground

    whispers of freedom
Rise up and hear the call
    History calling to you
    ‘Warszawa, walcz!’

  • DakhaBrakha: NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert

    13:57

People always ask me, What's your favorite Tiny Desk Concert? Well, right now it's the one recently performed by DakhaBrakha. The creative quartet from Kiev, Ukraine make music that sounds like nothing I've ever heard, with strands of everything I've ever heard. There are rhythms that sound West African and drone that feels as if it could have emanated from India or Australia. At times, DakhaBrakha is simply a rock band whose crazy homeland harmonies are filled with joy. All the while, they play tight-knit tunes featuring accordion, drums, reeds and shakers while wearing tall, Marge Simpson-looking wool hats that made me jealous.

I want the world to see this Tiny Desk Concert more than any other right now. It's refreshing to hear the power of acoustic music and the many worlds of sound still waiting to be explored. -- BOB BOILEN

    5:38

Most Underrated Prog Rock Band SBB 30 Stopni W Cieniu SBB is acclaimed as the best Polish rock band of the past 45 years. The three musicians that revolutionized Polish rock, Beyond doubt the most prominent representatives of progressive rock in Poland: it is only a mere sample of the way the band has been referred to. A complete list of references and opinions would be far too long to quote. Yet apart from the groups formidable and praiseworthy history one must not forget that SBB is in the first place an active band, far from being dormant, regularly giving live performances and shunning to choose a soft option as far as music is concerned. Invariably Seeking, Breaking and Building.

    ======= 40:1 SONG STORY =======

The battle of Wizna (7th-10th of September 1939). 720 Polish infantrymen, commanded by Władysław Raginis, defended a small fortified line near the village of Wizna against more than 40’000 German soldiers while being under a heavy artillery barrage.

    ======= 40:1 LYRICS =======

    Baptised in fire.
    Forty to one

    So silent before the storm
    Awaiting command
A few has been chosen to stand
    As one outnumbered by far
    The orders from high command
    Fight back, hold your ground!

    In early September it came
A war unknown to the world
No warning they entered that land
That is protected by polish hand
Unless you are forty to one
Your force will soon be undone

    Baptised in fire
    Forty to one
    Spirit of spartans
    Death and glory
    Soldiers of Poland
    Second to none
Wrath of the Wehrmacht brought to a halt

The 8th of September it starts
    The rage of the Reich
A barrage of mortars and guns
Stand past, the bunkers will hold
The captain has pledged his life
    I'll face my fate here!
    The sound of artillery strike
    So fierce
    The thunder of guns

So come, bring on all that you've got
Come hell, come high water, never stop
Unless you are forty to one
Your lives will soon be undone

    Baptised in fire
    40 to 1
    Spirit of spartans
    Death and glory
    Soldiers of poland
    Second to none
Wrath of the Wehrmacht brought to a halt

    Always remember, a fallen soldier
Always remember, fathers and sons at war
    Always remember, a fallen soldier
Always remember, fathers and sons at war
    Always remember, a fallen soldier
    Always remember, buried in history

No vermin may enter that land
That is protected by polish hand
Unless you are forty to one
Your force will soon be undone

    Baptised in fire
    Forty to one
    Spirit of spartans
    Death and glory!
    Soldiers of Poland
    Second to none
Wrath of the Wehrmacth brought to a halt

  • Nigun Cracow | Poland | Jewish folk tune 🕎

    6:49

Nigun Krakaw (Cracow). Jewish folk melody from Ukraine / Poland. Photo: Jews of Rohatyn, Ukraine (east Galicia), 1912. Nigun means melody / tune in Hebrew. Music by Jewish messianic community, Kyiv, Ukraine. Ashkenazi Jewish culture of Ukraine. Name Ashkenaz (means Germany in modern Hebrew) comes from Ashkuza, Assyrian term for Scythia, geographic Ukraine. In the past term Ashkenaz had much broader meaning and denoted nearly the entire northern Europe. Prior to the Holocaust, what is now Ukraine was home to 2 millions Askenazi Jews (that is half of the population of modern Israel). The bulk (a good half) of western Ukrainian Jews perished in Belzec extermination camp (now in Poland, just next to Ukraine´s border), while the most of central Ukrainian Jews were executed by German einsatzkommando group C. Nevertheless, at the collapse of Soviet Union in 1991, Ukraine was home to 400.000 Jews, nearly half of them moved to Israel or the west in 1990s. Very likely, current Ukrainian president Poroshenko is of Jewish paternal descent (Waltzman), the same applies to paternal lineage of Tymoshenko (Kapitelman). Both from south Ukrainian / Bessarabian Jewry. The currents Ukraine´s minister of regional development Groysman is also of Jewish ethnicity (Podolian Jews), just as former chief of Football Association of Ukraine (Surkis), many parlamentaries, former Odesa mayor (Gurwitz) and many inflential industrialists and bankers (Kolomoyski, Pinchuk etc.). Russia´s second richest man Vekselberg is also Ukrainian Jew (from west Ukraine, born and grew up in Dorohobych). Chief of US Federal Reserve Ben Bernanke´s family too originates from Boryslav, west Ukraine just as Barbara Streisand´s grandfather was Jewish immigrant from Berezhany, west Ukraine. The only other prominent European president who had (at least half) Jewish descent was Sarkozy of France. England also had a Jewish prime minister Benjamin Disraeli (from Venice Jews) in the 19th century, who was perhaps the most famous Jewish Christian, who said that if not Christ nobody would knew even about the Jews. Luckily, Holocaust bypassed Jews in England (Germany didnt manage to invade UK - mainly the merit of British Air Force).
