  • Madagascar National Anthem - Ry Tanindrazanay malala ô!

    1:03

    THE NATIONAL ANTHEM CHALLENGE (No.17)
Country: Madagascar (officially the Republic of Madagascar)

    [The story behind this challenge...

I started learning national anthems (other than the Philippines' where I come from) in 2009 when I was invited to sing both the Philippines' and Singapore's national anthem for an event in Singapore. Unfortunately, close to the event day, the organisers decided to use a recording instead of a live performance (guess they were unsure of me - haha! but thank goodness). Nevertheless, I continued learning the Singapore national anthem. Inspired by learning the new language, I got interested since then to learn more, especially those of the countries I have visited and the ones in my travel bucket list - as if they will easily let me in at the airport if I can sing their national anthem. Haha!

For an unknown reason, I became unstoppable. I kept learning new ones. Though I was leisurely doing it in the beginning (and would even stop for months), I didn't realise I have already mastered over 20 anthems. And then I started learning more.

There's a little magic learning the language in every anthem. It is challenging yet very addictive. Besides, I get to understand its origin and the country's rich history as well; a totally different approach to studying the world history. Every anthem is unique and I have fun memories listening to them - while in the train, the bus or even walking home. The experience is special and I simply want to share this beautiful experience to everyone - the feeling of having the world live inside me.]

    ABOUT THE ANTHEM

Ry Tanindrazanay malala ô! is the national anthem of Madagascar. The lyrics was written by Pasteur Rahajason and the music by Norbert Raharisoa. It is similar to a march and is influenced by European music. It is often played by Malagasy musicians on accordion. The anthem was officially adopted on April 27, 1959 by the parliament of Madagascar. [Source: Wikipedia]

    Lyrics
    Everybody''s looking for that something
One thing that makes it all complete
You'll find it in the strangest places
Places you never knew it could be

Some find it in the face of their children
Some find it in their lover's eyes
Who can deny the joy it brings
When you've found that special thing
    You're flying without wings

Some find it sharing every morning
    Some in their solitary nights
You'll find it in the words of others
A simple line can make you laugh or cry

You'll find it in the deepest friendship
The kind you cherish all your life
And when you know how much that means
    You've found that special thing
    You're flying without wings

So impossible as they may seem
You've got to fight for every dream
'Cause who's to know which one you let go
    Would have made you complete

Well, for me it's waking up beside you
To watch the sunrise on your face
To know that I can say I love you
At any given time or place

It's little things that only I know
Those are the things that make you mine
And it's like flying without wings
    'Cause you're my special thing
    I'm flying without wings

And you're the place my life begins
And you'll be where it ends

    I'm flying without wings
And that's the joy you bring
    I'm flying without wings

  • Javier Solis - Sabor a mi

    3:04

Javier Solís (September 1, 1931, Mexico City, Mexico[1] April 19, 1966, Mexico City, Mexico) was a popular Mexican singer of boleros and rancheras, and film actor of the middle 20th century.

Born Gabriel Siria Levario, Javier Solis became known as one of the most recognized Mariachi solo artists in Mexico. Coming from humble beginnings, at a young age Solis had to drop out of school to help support his family. He trained as an amateur boxer for six years with aspirations of turning professional, but quit after his father urged him to choose a more decent career. The young man used to sing in local competitions for small prizes (such as a pair of new shoes), but was eventually banned from participating because he so dominated the competition.

At age 16, Solis went to Puebla, Mexico to sing with Mariachi Metepec, but it wasn't until years later when Julito Rodriguez and Alfredo Gil of the trio Los Panchos heard him singing at a local bar that he got his first break as a recording artist. They took him to audition with CBS records where he signed a recording contract and cut his first album in 1950. His first hit, Lloraras, came two years later and prompted his producer Felipe Valdes Leal to give him the name Javier Solis. The vocalist came to international acclaim in 1957, making appearances in the United States, Central, and South America. Solis was the first to sing songs in a style now known as Boleros-Rancheras. He sang boleros typically associated with trio music but now accompanied by mariachis, also adding waltzes and tangos to his repertoire as a prolific interpreter of many styles of music.

Not content with simply performing as a recording artist, Solis began his acting career in 1959; filming more than 20 movies with stars such as Maria Victoria, Lola Beltran, and Luis Aguilar. Javier Solis died in 1966 at age 33 from complications resulting from gall bladder surgery, leaving behind a brief but memorable musical legacy. ~ Zac Johnson, All Music Guide

  • Jef Gilson et Malagasy - The Creator Has A Master Plan

    12:09

Jef Gilson et Malagasy - The Creator Has A Master Plan (written by Pharoah Sanders, from JEF GILSON & MALAGASY - Zao (recorded 1969/1973), Isma'a 2002, France)

Jef Gilson is a French jazz pianist whose career started in the sixties and was one of the first bandleaders to utilized the talents of a very young violinist named Jean Luc Ponty. This enchanting compilation comes from four sessions in 1969 and 1973. The first two datesfrom 1969 take place and employ jazz musicians from Madagascar, perhaps a first for acollaboration with musicians from the exotic island of Madagascar, some 20 years beforeHenry Kaiser & David Lindley made their way there. The first group includes 5 sax or clarinet players, plus Jef on electric piano and xylophone, an electric bassist and drummer. This is truly infectious and joyous Afropop with jumping grooves, interlocking drums and xylophone and harmonious horns, not so distant from the better parts of those 'Ethiopique'series CDs. The one cover that these sessions provide is a hypnotic version of Pharoah Sanders' The Creator Has a Master Plan, done by a fine sextet with alto sax, bass clarinet, piano, el. bass and two drummer/percussionists. The two sessions from 1973take place in Paris and employ another sextet with both local players and some from Madagascar. What makes these units interesting is that they include two electric bassistsand an instrument called a valiha, which sounds like a kora. Both bassists play different, percolating parts, as the valiha and percussionist also lock into their grooves. It is rare to find music that is both adventurous and so much fun simultaneously.

I do NOT intend to ruin artists, their inheritors or the starving music industry, and if there is a problem with this upload drop me an e-mail and I'll be a good boy and remove it!
