  • The Best of Paganini

    1:15:21

    The Best of Niccolò Paganini (27 October 1782 – 27 May 1840)

Paganini was an Italian violinist, violist, guitarist, and composer. He was the most celebrated violin virtuoso of his time, and left his mark as one of the pillars of modern violin technique. His Caprice No. 24 in A minor, Op. 1, is among the best known of his compositions, and has served as an inspiration for many prominent composers.

He was born in Genoa, then capital of the Republic of Genoa, the third of the six children of Antonio and Teresa (née Bocciardo) Paganini. Paganini's father was an unsuccessful trader, but he managed to supplement his income through playing music on the mandolin. At the age of five, Paganini started learning the mandolin from his father, and moved to the violin by the age of seven. His musical talents were quickly recognized, earning him numerous scholarships for violin lessons. The young Paganini studied under various local violinists, including Giovanni Servetto and Giacomo Costa, but his progress quickly outpaced their abilities. Paganini and his father then traveled to Parma to seek further guidance from Alessandro Rolla. But upon listening to Paganini's playing, Rolla immediately referred him to his own teacher, Ferdinando Paer and, later, Paer's own teacher, Gasparo Ghiretti. Though Paganini did not stay long with Paer or Ghiretti, the two had considerable influence on his composition style.

Paganini composed his own works to play exclusively in his concerts, all of which profoundly influenced the evolution of violin technique. His 24 Caprices were likely composed in the period between 1805 and 1809, while he was in the service of the Baciocchi court. Also during this period, he composed the majority of the solo pieces, duo-sonatas, trios and quartets for the guitar, either as a solo instrument or with strings. These chamber works may have been inspired by the publication, in Lucca, of the guitar quintets of Boccherini. Many of his variations, including Le Streghe, The Carnival of Venice, and Nel cor più non mi sento, were composed, or at least first performed, before his European concert tour.

Generally speaking, Paganini's compositions were technically imaginative, and the timbre of the instrument was greatly expanded as a result of these works. Sounds of different musical instruments and animals were often imitated. One such composition was titled Il Fandango Spanolo (The Spanish Dance), which featured a series of humorous imitations of farm animals. Even more outrageous was a solo piece Duetto Amoroso, in which the sighs and groans of lovers were intimately depicted on the violin. There survives a manuscript of the Duetto, which has been recorded. The existence of the Fandango is known only through concert posters.

However, his works were criticized for lacking characteristics of true polyphonism, as pointed out by Eugène Ysaÿe. Yehudi Menuhin, on the other hand, suggested that this might have been the result of his reliance on the guitar (in lieu of the piano) as an aid in composition. The orchestral parts for his concertos were often polite, unadventurous, and clearly supportive of the soloist. In this, his style is consistent with that of other Italian composers such as Paisiello, Rossini and Donizetti, who were influenced by the guitar-song milieu of Naples during this period.

On 27 May 1840, Paganini died from internal hemorrhaging before a priest could be summoned. Because of this, and his widely rumored association with the devil, the Church denied his body a Catholic burial in Genoa.

    buy on iTunes:

PAPIK PRESENTS COCKTAIL MARTINO - TRIBUTE TO BRUNO MARTINO

Cocktail Martino is a project by Nerio 'Papik' Poggi, dedicated to Bruno Martino, one of the most important and influential Italian author and performer of the last century.
Bruno Martino is the composer of ‘E la chiamano Estate’ but above all 'Summer', the only song by an Italian composer to make it in the Real Book, the book that list the most famous music scores of the Most know Jazz standards from all over the world. Out of the hundreds Versions of ‘Estate’ the ones by Chet Baker and Joao Gilberto probably remain the most touching. Bruno Martino was from Rome and began his career at fifteen in 1940’s playing in jazz bands. In the 60's he was crowned as one of the most important Italian composers and performers and continued to work until the 90s writing and performing live. He passed away in Rome in June 2000.
Nerio 'Papik' Poggi had already declared his 'love' for Bruno Martino redoing in each of his two albums a piece by the great Artist. But with this project he is finally able to give you a very clear idea of how a contemporary artist can feel so close to an Artist of the past, even if recent, and can revive it in a form that maintains the tradition and the mixture with modernity.
In this project Nerio has involved tens of musicians, but primarily those who work closely with him, like guitarist Alfredo Bochicchio, trumpeter Massimo Guerra, bassist Pierpaolo Ranieri, keyboards player Fabrizio Foggia, drummer Marco Rovinelli and on percussions SimoneFedericuccio Talone. Among the Vocalists the German crooner Tom Gaebel, a very talented artist completely unknown in Italy, but very popular in Germany, Federico Stragà and Alessandro Pitoni, both singers very close to the world of jazz and with performances at the San Remo Festival in the past, Matteo Brancaleoni, the Italian crooner that just recently released his own album produced by Papik himself. Other singers appearing on the album and well worth a mentioning : Daniele ‘Bengi’ Benati (leader of the group ‘Ridillo’), Fred Buccini, Vittoria Siggillino, Paco Di Maso, Francesca Gramegna, The Barbera Connection e Cristiana Polegri (who sings and plays Sax).
The majority of the compositions are by Bruno Martino, chosen from his best-known songs and other songs chosen from his big repertoire such as The Girl From Ipanema by Jobim (here sung by Tom Gaebel).
Overall, the album is a little gem of easy listening as we have become accustomed by Papik in the last few years with it’s projects.

Pachelbel was a German composer, organist and teacher who brought the south German organ tradition to its peak. He composed a large body of sacred and secular music, and his contributions to the development of the chorale prelude and fugue have earned him a place among the most important composers of the middle Baroque era.

Pachelbel's music enjoyed enormous popularity during his lifetime; he had many pupils and his music became a model for the composers of south and central Germany. Today, Pachelbel is best known for the Canon in D, as well as the Chaconne in F minor, the Toccata in E minor for organ, and the Hexachordum Apollinis, a set of keyboard variations.

Pachelbel's music was influenced by southern German composers, such as Johann Jakob Froberger and Johann Kaspar Kerll, Italians such as Girolamo Frescobaldi and Alessandro Poglietti, French composers, and the composers of the Nuremberg tradition. He preferred a lucid, uncomplicated contrapuntal style that emphasized melodic and harmonic clarity. His music is less virtuosic and less adventurous harmonically than that of Dieterich Buxtehude, although, like Buxtehude, Pachelbel experimented with different ensembles and instrumental combinations in his chamber music and, most importantly, his vocal music, much of which features exceptionally rich instrumentation. Pachelbel explored many variation forms and associated techniques, which manifest themselves in various diverse pieces, from sacred concertos to harpsichord suites

  • Renaissance Composers Pt. 9 - The Italian School Pt. 1

    27:01

Welcome to the ninth part of the Renaissance Composers (First part of the Italian School)!

It contains composers such as Zacara da Teramo, Matteo da Perugia, Gulielmo Ebreo da Pesaro, Franchinus Gaffurius, Giacomo Fogliano, Vincenzo Capirola, Francesco Spinacino, Andrea Antico, Bernardo Pisano, Franceso de Layolle, Costanzo Festa, Francesco Canova da Milano, and Albert de Rippe; from 1350 to 1500.

The next part will include composers such as Giovanni Animuccia, Vincenzo Galilei, Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina, Fabritio Caroso, Claudio Merulo, Giovanni Maria Nanino, and Orazio Vecchi; from 1501 to 1550.

  • Classical Oboe Concertos

    1:3:46

From around 1750, the oboe, an instrument hitherto largely used in chamber and church music, began to make its way into concert halls, and to be played by virtuoso soloists. The instrument’s construction was evolving to increase the penetration of its hi register, making it more suitable both as an orchestral and a concertante instrument. Even so, the oboe of Mozart’s day could still only play two keys, thus restricting its technical range of available music and expression. Mozart overcame those limitations most wholly successfully, as one might imagine, but none of the other works here is negligible. His friend Carl Ditters van Dittersdorf composed four concertos for the instrument and its close but obsolescent relative, the sweeter and gentler oboe d’amore, which is heard here in the A major concerto.

The first and most exuberant of three concertos by Giuseppe Ferlendis (1755 - 1810) opens the recording with pleasant and undemanding, slightly Haydnesque sequences. Then comes a greater rarity, the C major concerto by Leopold Hofmann (1738 - 1793) of more archaically Baroque cut, owing a little of its dash and brio to the Italian concertos for the instrument such as those composed by Vivaldi. In true classical style, the cadenzas for each concerto were composed/improvised by Puskunigis, who also contributes booklet notes which give valuable context to the Classical-era oboe and discuss the particularities of each composer’s writing for the instrument.

From around 1750 the oboe, an instrument hitherto largely used in chamber music and church music, began to make its way into the concert halls, and to be played by virtuoso soloists. The Oboe Concertos on this new recording represent the Classical Viennese Style, with Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart as its undisputed genius. Although the other composers, Ferlendis, Ditters von Dittersdorf and Hofmann are lesser known, their Oboe (or Oboe d’Amore) Concertos share the same grace, sparkle and melodious flow as Mozart’s masterwork.

Composers: Carl Ditters von Dittersdorf, Leopold Hofmann, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart
Artists: Andrius Puskunigis (oboe), St. Christopher Chamber Orchestra, Donatas Katkus (conductor)

The Barber of Seville, or The Futile Precaution (Italian: Il barbiere di Siviglia, ossia L'inutile precauzione) is an opera buffa in two acts by Gioachino Rossini with an Italian libretto by Cesare Sterbini. The libretto was based on Pierre Beaumarchais's French comedy Le Barbier de Séville (1775). The première of Rossini's opera (under the title Almaviva, o sia L'inutile precauzione) took place on 20 February 1816 at the Teatro Argentina, Rome.

Gioacchino Rossini (1792 - 1868) was an Italian composer who wrote 39 operas as well as sacred music, chamber music, songs, and some instrumental and piano pieces. His best-known operas include the Italian comedies Il barbiere di Siviglia (The Barber of Seville) and La Cenerentola and the French-language epics Moïse et Pharaon and Guillaume Tell (William Tell). A tendency for inspired, song-like melodies is evident throughout his scores, which led to the nickname The Italian Mozart. Until his retirement in 1829, Rossini had been the most popular opera composer in history.

  • The most famous composers. 14: Boccherini

    3:30

Luigi Rodolfo Boccherini (Lucca, Italy, February 19, 1743 -- Madrid, Spain, May 28, 1805) was an Italian classical era composer and cellist whose music retained a courtly and galante style while he matured somewhat apart from the major European musical centers. Boccherini is most widely known for one particular minuet from his String Quintet in E, Op. 11, No. 5 (G 275), and the Cello Concerto in B flat major (G 482). The latter work was long known in the heavily altered version by German cellist and prolific arranger Friedrich Grützmacher, but has recently been restored to its original version. Boccherini composed several guitar quintets including the Fandango which was influenced by Spanish music.

Lutnista i kompozytor.
(culture.pl)

Diomedes Cato (1560 to 1565 – after 1618) was an Italian-born composer and lute player, who lived and worked entirely in Poland. He is known mainly for his instrumental music. He mixed the style of the late Renaissance with the emerging Baroque, and also Italian idioms with Polish folk material; and in addition he was one of the first native-born Italian composers to visit Sweden.
He was born near Treviso between 1560 and 1565, possibly at Serravale where his father is documented as being a teacher. Around 1565 his family, who were Protestants, fled Italy to escape the Inquisition, and settled in Poland. Cato, who had left Italy before the age of five, received all of his musical education in Kraków, where the family settled. The first record of his employment dates from 1588, when he was hired as a lutenist by the court of King Sigismund III Vasa, a position he kept until 1593. In 1591 he wrote music for the wedding of Jan Kostka at Świecie castle; the Kostka family may have been patrons of his, since Stanisław Kostka[disambiguation needed] left him a considerable legacy in 1602.

In 1593 and 1594 he went with King Sigismund to Sweden, where his fame as a lutenist and composer was evidently large; as late as 1600 he was still the most famous composer of Italian origin known in Sweden. Some of his music, including a few Polish dances, survives from sources only in Sweden. The last tentative record of his life is from 1619, when there is a single unconfirmed reference to him playing the lute during that year.
Cato wrote both vocal and instrumental music, and both sacred and secular: however he was most famous for his works for lute. The lute works include dozens of pieces in many forms and styles, including choreae polonicae, fantasias, galliards, transcriptions of Italian madrigals, passamezzos, and preludes, all of which he probably played himself. • The most famous composers. 4: Vivaldi

    2:57

Antonio Lucio Vivaldi (4 March 1678 -- 28 July 1741), nicknamed il Prete Rosso (The Red Priest) because of his red hair, was an Italian Baroque composer, priest, and virtuoso violinist, born in Venice. Recognized as one of the greatest Baroque composers, his influence during his lifetime was widespread over Europe. Vivaldi is known mainly for composing instrumental concertos, especially for the violin, as well as sacred choral works and over forty operas. His best known work is a series of violin concertos known as The Four Seasons.
Though Vivaldi's music was well received during his lifetime, it later declined in popularity until its vigorous revival in the first half of the 20th century. Today, Vivaldi ranks among the most popular and widely recorded of Baroque composers.

  • The most famous composers. 32: Rossini

    7:46

Gioachino Rossini (Giovacchino Antonio Rossini in the baptismal certificate) (29 February 1792 -- 13 November 1868) was an Italian composer who wrote 39 operas as well as sacred music, chamber music, songs, and some instrumental and piano pieces. His best-known operas include the Italian comedies Il barbiere di Siviglia (The Barber of Seville) and La Cenerentola and the French-language epics Moïse et Pharaon and Guillaume Tell. A tendency for inspired, song-like melodies is evident throughout his scores, which led to the nickname The Italian Mozart. Until his retirement in 1829, Rossini had been the most popular opera composer in history.
