  • Top 10 Classical Music Composers

    9:27

  • Greek Muse - Songs by female composers from Greece, 1850 - 2000.

    3:04

Myrsini Margariti, soprano, Effie Agrafioti, piano

    Irida 025

Female composers even today lack recognition and appreciation, and this state of affairs stems from centuries of prejudice. Onthe occasion of a series of concerts featuring songs by female composers, we recorded this double cd in which the listenerwill hear songs by Greek women, both local and of the diaspora: from Australia (Kouvaras), France (Foscarina-Damaschino,Kolassi), Britain (Lambelet, Gennadios), Romania (Taban-Chefaliadi, Barberis, Soutzo), and others such as Lalaouni andKyriakou, who came to prominence as famous piano soloists and lived in Europe for decades. These recordings also includecomposers who after studying in Europe returned to Greece offering their valuable services and knowledge in the field ofmusic (Lampiri, Kalogridou, Lamari, Filipaiou, Platonos). The songs by Lila Lalaouni and Rena Kyriakou are firstrecordings, as is the song by Irma Kolasi, who is well known tothe public for her immense contribution to classical singing.Other songs on this double cd may also have been recorded orperformed for the first time, however there is no availableinformation to back this up with certainty. The cover was designed by the internationally renowned painterYiannis Psychopedis. We thank him warmly for his high aestheticinspiration. It honors us and harmoniously and symbolicallyconnects Music with Painting. We would like to thank to theproduction sponsor of the double CD, who wishes to remainanonymous. His grandmother, decades ago, was a young girl withimpressive abilities, who in those years dreamed of going to Paris tostudy sculpture, feeling the need to create great artworks usingmundane materials used in daily life. But how could a young girl inthose times convince the world that life could be more than a one-way road towards marriage and childcare? So, symbolically, this album is dedicated to her memory. This double cd was recorded at the Athens Conservatory ConcertHall in February 2019 (songs by Rena Kyriakou, Mansi Barberis,Rodica Routzo and Eleni Lamari) and February 2020, (othersongs).

    Piano: Steinway & Sons.
Recording, mixing & mastering: Vassilis Pakos-Agrafiotis,
    499music-Helsinki.

The manuscripts of Lila Lalaouni come from the Archive of theAthens Conservatory. We thank Niki Krasaki for her valuable help. The manuscripts of Rena Kyriakou were previously offered to us byProfessor Paul Calligas, who manages the Archive. The manuscript of the Irma Kolasi comes from its Archive, which iskept in the “Lilian Boudouris Music Library” of the Friends ofMusic Association. The Thomas Tamvakos “Archive of GreekMusicians provided invaluable assistance in locating many of thecompositions that were recorded.

    Dimitris Dragatakis, Essay for orchestra

    Carlsbad Symphony Orchestra
    Byron Fidetzis, conductor

Dimitris Dragatakis (Greek: Δημήτρης Δραγατάκης; 22 January 1914 – 18 December 2001) was a Greek composer of classical music and Greek art music.

He was born in Platanoussa, Epirus in 1914 and studied the violin from 1930 to 1939 at the Greek National Conservatory in Athens. Later on, he switched to the viola and from 1949 started composition lessons with Leonidas Zoras and Manolis Kalomiris, receiving his diploma in 1955.

He is considered one of Greece's most important modern composers, with a personal musical idiom that is both mature and laconic. Influenced by the musical traditions of Greece (in particular the ones of his native Epirus) and ancient Greek drama, his music also came to reflect his interest in new techniques such as free atonality, novel instrumental combinations, post-modernism, minimalism and electronic music.

He won a number of major prizes, including the Maria Callas award from the Hellenic Broadcasting Corporation in 1997 and the prestigious J. A. Papaioannou award from the Athens Academy in 1999.

He taught violin and later on theory at the Greek National Conservatory for twenty years, until he was appointed vice president of the conservatory in 1997.

He played for twenty years in the Greek National Opera as a violist and later served on the board of the Athens State Orchestra. He was vice president and honorary president of the Greek Composers Union.
He died in Athens aged 87.

  • The Rolling Stones - Sympathy For The Devil

    6:23

Let It Bleed (50th Anniversary Edition) is out now:

Sympathy For The Devil by The Rolling Stones
Composers: Mick Jagger and Keith Richards

    Lyrics:
Please allow me to introduce myself
I'm a man of wealth and taste
I've been around for a long, long year
Stole many a man's soul and faith

I was 'round when Jesus Christ
Had his moment of doubt and pain
    Made damn sure that Pilate
Washed his hands and sealed his fate

    Pleased to meet you
    Hope you guess my name
    But what's puzzling you
Is the nature of my game

    I stuck around St. Petersberg
When I saw it was a time for a change
Killed the Czar and his ministers
    Anastasia screamed in vain
    I rode a tank
    Held a general's rank
    When the blitzkrieg raged
    And the bodies stank

    Pleased to meet you
Hope you guess my name, oh yeah
What's puzzling you is the nature of my game, oh yeah

I watched with glee as your kings and queens
    Fought for ten decades
    For the Gods they made
    I shouted out
    Who killed the Kennedys?
    When after all
    It was you and me

    Let me please introduce myself
I'm a man of wealth and taste
And I lay traps for troubadours
Who get killed before they reach Bombay

    Pleased to meet you
Hope you guessed my name, oh yeah
But what's puzzling you is the nature of my game, oh yeah
    Well, get down, hit it

    Pleased to meet you
Hope you guess my name, oh yeah
But what's confusin’ you is just the nature of my game

Just as every cop is a criminal
    And all the sinners saints
As heads is tails just call me Lucifer
'Cause I'm in need of some restraint

    So if you meet me
    Have some courtesy
Have some sympathy, and some taste
    Use all your well-learned politesse
Or I'll lay your soul to waste, mmm yeah
    Pleased to meet you
Hope you guess my name, mmm yeah
But what's puzzling you is the nature of my game

  • Greek contributions to Ottoman classical music - Composers 1

    10:01

Important contributions to Ottoman Turkish classical and semi-classical music were made by the major minority groups of the Empire including Greeks, Armenians and Jews. Ottoman Greeks (Rum) were involved in Ottoman classical musics as both composers, instrumentalists and singers from the 17th through the 20th centuries. This upload will feature works by a few of these composers - the kemence players Vasilaki and Nikolaki from the latter 19th century; the singer/composer Zaharya/Zacharias of the early 18thcentury; and two of the three Kyriazis brothers, Hristo/Christos and Civan/Tzivanis who were highly sought after musicians for both the Palace , the urban gazino clubs and kocek dancers.

  • PYX LAX - Ήμουν κι Εγώ εκεί HQ Sound,HD

    1:49:04

Pyx Lax (Πυξ Λαξ, Pix Lax) was a Greek entechno-rock band. Originally formed in 1989, they released their first recording in 1990, and had a critical and commercial success in the Greek music industry for fifteen years, before being dissolved in 2004. They are considered as the most successful, commercially, group in the history of Greek discography with three gold and five platinum albums. Some of their greatest hits were: De Tha Dakryso Pia Gia Sena, Ti Ine Afto Pou Mas Enoni?, I Palies Agapes Pane Ston Paradeiso, Mia Synousia Mystiki, Epapses Agapi na thymizeis, Poula me, Monaxia mou ola.
Initially the members of the band were Filippos Pliatsikas, Babis Stokas, Sakis Stamoulis, and Panayiotis Spyropoulos. Their professional recording career began with a demo cassette which they delivered to Minos EMI in Athens. Marketing Director of Minos EMI at the time, Manos Xydous, liked their recordings so much, that he later joined the band. Another member of staff, Dimitris Fergadis, the head of Sales, proposed their name Pyx Lax.
During their career, Pyx lax have collaborated with many Greek singers and musicians such as George Dalaras, Haris Alexiou, Vasilis Papakonstantinou, Katsimihas Brothers, Lavrentis Machairitsas, Miltiadis Paschalidis, Vasilis Karras, Makis Christodoulopoulos, Sotiria Leonardou, Melina Tanagri, Psarantonis, Lakis Papadopoulos, Domenica, ONAR, Theodosia Tsatsou, Mihalis Tzouganakis, Ilias Makridis and many more.

The biggest number of the band's international collaborations were included in their last studio album Charoumeni Stin Poli Ton Trelon (2003), with most notable songs: Someone Wrote ‘Save Me’ On a Wall (with Eric Burdon singing lead) and All My Angels Falling (with Marc Almond). In 1999 they had also released the cd-single Let The Picture Do The Talking (As' tin Ikona Na Milai) along with the Corsican group I Muvrini and Sting. Other important international artists that collaborated with Pyx Lax were: Gordon Gano, Steve Wynn, Bayaka and Saša Dragić.
In 2004 the band announced in a television interview that it would be dissolved after two goodbye concerts. The concerts were scheduled for 18 September in Athens and 20 September in Thessaloniki. Tickets for the Athens concert were sold out within a few hours, and a second concert was arranged for 19 September. Their final album, called simply Telos - Live Sto Likavitto (End - Live at Lycabetus) is a recording of the first goodbye concert in Lykavittos, Athens.
In 2010 Manos Xydous died at the age of 57. Before his death the members of Pyx Lax were in talks of a reunification for concerts during 2011. The reunification finally took place without Manos with a big tour around Greece.
-- The most significant moment was the massive concert of the July 13th 2011 at the Athens Olympic Stadium, with a crowd of more than 75,000 spectators. --
In their time, Pyx Lax were considered to be one of the most popular bands in Greece. Sotiria Malfa, a Greek critic wrote that The stamp of Pyx Lax on Greek music of the end of the 90s and the beginning of the 00s is something more than profound.

The band has been recognized for both their longevity and the number of records they sold, as well as the unique feeling which was created between Pyx Lax and their beloved public.

It may sound crazy, but we've never been in Kyoto. We are from Argentina and we feel a strong connection with the traditional japanese culture. So we get our japanese inspiration from Youtube videos, japanese musicians, blogs, books and pictures posted by locals and tourists.

We love Kyoto and we want to get there! We want to visit the place that inspired so many songs to us for more than ten years.

    And you can help us.

All donations will be destined to our first (and maybe only?) trip to Japan. Once there, we want to play our music but we also will be recording soundscapes, making video footages and taking pictures for our future releases. All that material will be freely available for download with a Creative Commons License.

Be part of our dream. Your name will be put in a list of contributors, and that list will be stored in a sacred place at Kyoto when we get there. Every contribution will get us closer to our destination. Thank you!

Constantin Moscovici was born on October 2, 1962, in the Republic of Moldova. Following graduation from his home village musical school, Constantin enrolled at the University of Fine Arts “G. Musicescu” in Chisinau.
He started his professional musical career in 1984 as a soloist in pop group “Legend”, conducted by Iurie Sadovnic. During that period, the band played its own ethno-folk-jazz music. At the same time, Moscovici tried his vocation as a solo pan-flutist in the State Philharmonic Orchestra.
Afterward, from 1987-1990, as a solo pan-flute player, he took part in the popular instruments music group conducted by Moldovan composer Anatolie Chiriac. Moscovici’s calling card at that time was the famous melody, “The Lonely Shepherd”, composed by James Last. Biography Herman Maes

    Beyond Imagination
Composed, Performed and Produced by Herman Maes
    © 2015 AVB Music Productions
    © 2007 Hermax Music

Wanna get to know Arnaud van Beek?

It’s hard to categorize the electronic synthesizer music composed by Hermax into one genre. You could say it’s purely classical music, played with modern instruments, others keep it to ‘New Age’ connotation. Maybe a mixture between retro, classical synthesizer music covers it best. When comparing his music with famous artists names like Kitaro Matsuri, Jean Michel Jarre, Vangelis and the other big Greek composer Yanni comes into mind.

You can listen to the tracks in the following order:
    1. Gamma Birst 0:00
    2. Dark Mass 6:09
    3. Jet Streams 13:26
    4. Extended Expansion 24:36
    5. Foton Journey 30:40
    6. Quantum Vacuum 39:14
    7. White Dwarf 43:56
    8. Magnetic Zero 47:36

This dream music is influenced by all known (electronic) synthesizer musicians like Yanni, Kitaro, Vangelis, Kraftwerk, jean Michel Jarre. Powerfull synthesizer music.

  • 12 beautiful Greek melodies by Manos Hadjidakis played on the guitar

    40:53

00:00 O tachydromos (lyrics: Manos Hadjidakis)
    05:27 Athanassia (lyrics: Nikos Gatsos)
08:58 Mia fora ki enan kairo (lyrics Nikos Gatsos)
12:58 I micri Rallou (lyrics: Nikos Gatsos)
14:38 Odos oneiron (lyrics: Manos Hadjidakis)
16:39 Thalassa platia (lyrics: Georgios Roussos)
19:40 Agapi pou’gines (lyrics: Michalis Kakoyannis)
22:33 Ouri’s ballad (lyrics: Nikos Gatsos)
24:40 Hartino to feggaraki (lyrics: Nikos Gatsos)
28:55 To pelago einai vathy (lyrics: Manos Hadjidakis)
34:00 Ta paidia kato ston campo (lyrics: Manos Hadjidakis)
36:45 T’asteri tou voria (lyrics: Nikos Gatsos)

This is our version of 12 beautiful melodies composed by the great Greek composer Manos Hadjidakis (1925-1994). The arrangement for each and every song was carefully and meticulously prepared so that it reflects the enormous respect we feel towards the work of Manos Hadjidakis.

As we wandered through the beauty of Hadjidakis’ melodies, we kept wondering how one can touch such beauty without the risk of (unintetionally) blurring the melodic intensity, harmonic clarity and profound lyricism of these little gems, while at the same time seeking to project the richness of timbre that the classical guitar has to offer.

An approach of doric simplicity was deemed necessary, therefore, in order to respond to these challenges.

    We hope you enjoy.

    Miltos Logiadis, conductor

Petros Petrides (1892-1977) was an eminent Greek composer, conductor and scholar. It was generally self-taught in music (he studied by himself fugues by Bach), his work appears to be quite idiosyncratic and personal, deeply influenced by the Byzantine and greek folk melodies.

The music on my channel is meant to introduce a large audience to music by unknown classical composers and unknown classical music by famous composers in the music period of about 1870 till about 1970.
The program presents works by relatively unknown composers and unknown music by well-known composers and has no commercial purposes.
Tens of thousands of people around the world learn about unknown music through our channel (educational task) and unite the people from the many countries who give their comments and reactions. • Panagiotis Theodossiou, Eros for cello solo

    8:52

“Love shattered my mind, like a storm in an oak forest on the mountainside.”«Έρος δ’ ετίναξέ μοι φρένας, ως άνεμος κατ’ όρος δρυσίν εμπέτων.» Sappho (V, 47 Lobel – Page) (2005), This is the moto for the work which was a commission by the Thomas Tamvakos Greek Composers Archive. The power of love as Sappho poetically saw it and the composer musically hear it thousand years later. In a mystic and romantic-expressionistic as well mood “Eros” is based in a dialectical juxtaposition between the ancient Greek spirit and the contemporary musical thinking. The short citations of the famous Orestes stasimo from the Euripidian trilogy which recurs periodically works as a sacred voice from the past that leads the composer through the centuries and motivates his creativity.
The work has been performed twice in 2006: by Dimitris Magriotis at “Philippos Nakas” Concert Hall, Athens and by Olga Articopoulou at “EXPO ATHENS” Concert Hall, in the “Anthousa String Festival” receiving a honoured distinction.
In its version for viola solo (2010), it has been performed by Andrea Hemmenway in Composer's Portrait, organized by the Greek Composers Union at Hellenic Conservatory in Marousi in 2010 and in her personal recital at Vryssaki Hall, Athens Plaka, the same year.

Composers from 26 countries took part in Petrushka Project 2012, and the Project will be continued in the coming years.

Mikis Theodorakis composed this famous Sirtaki melody in 1964. The pianist Tatiana Papageorgiou has now produced a pianistically challenging arrangement for piano solo in collaboration with the composer.

We are familiar with the Sirtaki with its slow initial steps accelerating progressively in the dance which was popularised by the film Alexis Zorbas starring Anthony Quinn and Alan Bates who performed this dance to the music of Mikis Theodorakis. The name Sirtaki originates from the Syrtos (dragging dance), a highly varied traditional Greek folk dance. Atypically for Greek dances, the Sirtaki is not danced in a circle, but standing in a row with the arms placed over the neighbouring dancers’ shoulders.

We bring you our gifts, libations and praise.
To your daughter, herald of spring,
our song of thanksgiving for warm rains we sing.

  • Gluck: Orfeo ed Euridice - Aria: Senza un addio?

    5:20

Gluck: Orfeo ed Euridice - album out 18 May 2018.

Star countertenor Philippe Jaroussky continues his exploration of operatic settings of the Orpheus myth with the most famous of the many operas inspired by the story of the Greek poet who searches for his dead wife in the Underworld: Gluck's Orfeo ed Euridice. It contains one of the world's best-loved operatic arias, Orfeo's restrained, but moving lament, 'Che farò senza Euridice'. Conducted by Diego Fasolis, his is the world premiere recording of a version of the opera that was performed at the Royal Palace in Naples in 1774, 12 years after Orfeo ed Euridice was staged in Vienna as the first of Gluck's 'reform operas'. In these works Gluck emphasised simplicity of form and directness of expression, consciously rejecting the extravagances of opera seria, which dominated the early 18th century and was typified by convoluted plots and extended showpiece arias.

  • Beethovens Symphony No. 3 Eroica, 4th movement | conducted by Paavo Järvi

    12:58

Paavo Järvi and the Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen.

This fourth movement of the Symphony No. 3 in E-flat Major, opus 55 by Ludwig van Beethoven is pure exuberance, perfectly fitting the energetic playing style of the Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen.
The movement is based on a melody that Beethoven had used in three previous compositions. One of them is his music to the ballet The Creatures of Prometheus about that figure from Greek mythology who is at the root of human civilization.
Accordingly, the mood here is big and grand. The movement – and the symphony – are in E-flat, a key that composers often use for heroic, noble ideas.
This is the only time Beethoven had gotten so much mileage out of a single theme. Stretching its potential even further, Beethoven turns that melody into ten variations in this Allegro molto(very fast) finale of his Third Symphony. There are quiet moments and boisterous ones, but the symphony ends in an outpouring of sheer energy.

  • Paul Barnes performs Trisagion by David von Kampen

    13:42

Composer David von Kampen wrote this gorgeous piano work for me based on two Greek Orthodox hymns. I performed this on my Bright Sadness recital on June 12, 2020 as part of the 2020 Pan-Orthodox Music Symposium sponsored by St. Vladimir's Orthodox Theological Seminary and the International Society for Orthodox Church Music. I chant both hymns and discuss the creation of this beautiful work. Music begins at 5:25.

    Program Notes
Trisagion (2020) by David von Kampen
I have been chanting in Orthodox churches for twenty-five years and playing the piano for fifty years. Combining these two sacred activities has been a professional priority ever since Victoria Bond wrote her beautiful pianistic meditation on the Greek Orthodox communion hymn Potirion Sotiriu “The Cup of Salvation” back in 1999. Since that time several composers including Philip Glass (Piano Quintet “Annunciation,” 2018) and Ivan Moody (Nocturne of Light, 2010) have written beautiful piano works based on byzantine chant. When I asked my composer friend and Glenn Korff School of Music colleague David von Kampen to write a piano piece for me based on byzantine chant, I had selected the beautiful baptismal hymn Osi Is Hriston “As Many of You as were Baptized into Christ” from Galatians 3:27. But life is full of unexpected events. After David had begun writing the piece, I chanted the funeral of our priest’s wife Veda Anna and was deeply moved by the beauty of the processional chant that is sung as the body is brought to the front of the church at the beginning of the funeral service. This hymn is also sung on Holy Friday when Orthodox Christians remember Christ’s passion and experience the truth of a God who shared everything with us including our humanity and even death itself. This hymn had such a powerful effect on me that I asked David to incorporate it into his new work. Thus, Trisagion was born. Trisagion or “Thrice Holy” is an ancient hymn based on the trinitarian revelation of God found in Isaiah 6. Revealing a mystical vision of heavenly worship, the seraphim sings: “Holy, holy, holy is the LORD of hosts.” In the byzantine hymn, the seraphic utterance is rendered as “Holy God, Holy Mighty, Holy Immortal, have mercy on us.” Thus David’s piece combines what Orthodox Christians proclaim as the two beginnings of humanity – our new birth into Christ, and our entrance into eternity.
David’s work also recalls my previous life as an evangelical pianist where my own hymn arrangements were central to my role in worship. David, a confessional Lutheran, is clearly steeped in this tradition going all the way back to Bach. Both melodies used in Trisagion can be found in the 1945 Greek Byzantine Liturgical Hymnal by George Anastassiou, the student of the famous Athenian chanter and composer John Sakellarides whose reformed melodies Anastassiou used in his hymnal. These melodies are beloved by Greek Orthodox here in the US, and it was at Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church in Lincoln Nebraska where I first heard them in their liturgical context.
David begins Trisagion with a complete statement of the funeral hymn which is then beautifully developed before the entrance of the baptismal hymn. This hymn is developed in a variety of ways including a clear reference to the Lutheran Bach’s contrapuntal textures. The work concludes with a powerful restatement of the funeral hymn as we have musically experienced the two beginnings of baptism and death.
Trisagion was commissioned by the Nebraska Music Teachers Association and the Music Teachers National Association as part of their Commissioned Composer program. The work will have its official world premiere at the NMTA State Conference to be held on Oct 22-23 at the Glenn Korff School of Music of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. David also wrote a companion work for choir written for the UNL Chamber Singers under the direction of Marques Garrett who will also perform at the world premiere of the piano version.
