  • Koo Nimo Palmwine Quartet - AFH37

    1:18

    Performance - 30 June 2007
Koo Nimo (born Kwabena Boa-Amponsem on 3 October 1934, baptized Daniel Amponsah) is a leading folk musician of Palm wine music or Highlife music from Ghana.AFH37
Born in the village of Foase, in the Atwima District of the Ashanti Region in Ghana, West Africa, he worked in various jobs in science and medical-related field while maintaining his interest in music. In 1957, when the former British colony of the Gold Coast became the independent country of Ghana, Koo Nimo first received national acclaim through the formation of the Addadam Agofomma ensemble. Many of his songs tell traditional stories and are sung in the language Twi. Along with one or two guitars and vocals, the traditional Ashanti palmwine ensemble consists of traditional instruments of West Africa, including the apentemma and the donno, the frikyiwa (metal castanet), the prempensua (rhumba box), the ntorwa (hollow gourd rattle with beads or seeds woven around it on a net), and the nnawuta (consisting of two iron bells that provide the key rhythmic pattern) or dawuro (banana-shaped bell).
In 1979, in recognition of his services to Ghanaian music as performer, teacher and administrator, Koo Nimo was elected President of MUSIGA (the Musicians' Union of Ghana). His countrymen appreciated not only his music, but his love of and respect for tradition. In 1985 Koo Nimo was appointed interim chairman of COSGA, the Copyright Society of Ghana, More recently he has been made an honorary life member of the International Association for the Study of Popular Music, along with such distinguished names as Professor J.H.K. Nketia and John Collins. In 1990, eight of Koo's songs were released as a compact disk entitled Osabarima. This was the first work by a Ghanaian artist to be put on CD. In the words of High Fidelity Magazine (September 1990, 103). In February 1991, in recognition of his services to music and to his country, Koo received the prestigious Asanteman award from the Asantehene. In March, he received the Flag Star award from ECRAG (Entertainment Critics and Reviewers Association of Ghana). In 1991, he was invited to serve on the National Folklore Board of Trustees. In January, 1992, at Columbia University, New York, USA, Andrew L. Kaye presented his dissertation entitled Koo Nimo and his circle: A Ghanaian Musician in Ethnomusicological Perspective and was awarded a Doctor of Philosophy degree for his work. In March 1997, the Ghana government celebrated the fortieth anniversary of independence by awarding gold medals to forty of its distinguished citizens, one of whom was Koo Nimo. This was in recognition of his efforts to preserve traditional culture. In the next month he received the Konkoma Award for his contribution to Ghanaian Highlife Music.
In 1998, Koo was employed as a Professor of Ethnomusicology at the University of Washington in Seattle, USA, for two years, before taking a similar position at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. As of 2006, Koo Nimo has moved back to Ghana and is currently living in Kumasi.

  • FOKN Bois - Wo Nim Mi ft Medikal

    4:13

Wo Nim Mi translates as “now you claim to know me because I have made it” This song celebrates success by rubbing it in the faces of those who could have helped. Now let’s all dance together.

    Dir by Prince Dovlo
    Beat by M3NSA
    Mixed by Andras Weil
    Mastered by Stamusic Studios

    Pre-order EP / Download Single:

This is the first single off the “Afrobeats LOL” EP and it is produced by M3NSA who was going for a groove and vibe that no Ghanaian or West African for that matter can resist on the dancefloor. M3NSA raps about finally overcoming obstacles in the music industry by clearing a new path and building demand while Kubolor is being mischievous with his lyrics as usual teasing M3NSA and mentioning names of female Ghanaian celebrities he fancies. The song features Medikal who is one of the brightest rap stars in Ghana that has become so famous he changes his sim card every week.

The video shot by Prince Dovlo features some of Ghana’s most respected musicians, artists, socialites, dancers, thinkers, photographers, new talent, models, actors,...most dancing and dressed in white which is the color of celebration.

    *????Short Biography*
Amara, popularly known by his stage name, M.I.C, is a Sierra Leonean rapper, songwriter and record producer. He was born on the 31st of December and raised in Freetown by his grandmother highhandedly.

He got our attention with the release of his chart-topping single titled “Panda” Produced by Lamzo jay; followed by other singles like “Oba Ya” where he called Kracktwist and Samza to the table on the song.

M.I.C is one of the most talented young rappers in Africa, not just In Sierra Leone, and was the youngest recipient for an award at the 2017 Teens Nation Awards, namely the Best New school artist Award (Best New Artist Award).

He officially started spitting rap in the booth at the age of 11 years having been influenced by his Father who was a music lover at the time. After launching into music career for some years, he finally mastered the process of music production and began adding his vocals on the beats that his producer was making. A few years later, he took part at the first ever rap tv show (AYV Cypher season one), and merged as the winner.

He is signed to “Kabaka multimedia entertainment” - a Sierra Leonean based artist management company.

Perhaps, you might be wondering how his stage name M.I.C came about, in case you have ever pondered on that before the name was given to him by the first producer he ever worked with as it wasn’t his own idea that created the stage name.

  • Koo Nimo Palmwine Quartet - AFH41

    3:43

    Performance - 30 June 2007
Koo Nimo (born Kwabena Boa-Amponsem on 3 October 1934, baptized Daniel Amponsah) is a leading folk musician of Palm wine music or Highlife music from Ghana.

    ???? Biography
As someone who has mastered his craft over 18 plus years ago, Thy Young reputation as a prolific Music Producer is only further cemented by some of the names he has graced the studio with. He has produced across America and Africa, working for some of the Sierra Leones best, including acts like 441, Blakka-P, Tito Flex, Step-Q, Xzu-B, Shadow Boxxer, Ishoboy, Daddy Rhymes, Winner Man, Yok-7, Soufferior, LAJ, Dallas Deniro, Lex Bubble, Bed-j, Just2Ray and has also played for some Ghanaian musicians.

Those who understand both groove and tone will understand the mind of the Sierra Leonean born Producer based in the United State Of America.

Thy Young is often booked for his strong work ethic and his easy-going nature but moreover his impressive sight-reading abilities and his ability to complement the backbone of any song. In his own words, he “selflessly serves the music that he is the bridge between the song and singer.

Thy Young philosophy on music is that Afro drums exist in every African music genre, be it Afro hip hop, RNB or Pop. To him, it doesn’t matter, so long as it makes him feel an emotion.

Thy Young is classically trained and studied Music Production at Mission College For Nursing and Music Production in 2009 In the United State Of America.

Thy has had a busy career since 2009, having played as a sideman in over 10 musicians albums. Some of his recent works include Bonga Raray Man By Yok-7 and Winners Titoflex.

Fast forward to today and Thy has been travelling the USA to Sierra Leone. He has spent the last 10 years in America, with a couple of years spent learning his production skills.

He is also a composer as well as a producer. His name appears in dozens of influential musical projects, during his school days at Sierra CKC and Albert Academy. The first musical group he joined was JAY2BOYS, pull the plug Ent. Where he was a member, producer and composer. His first radio interview was on Sierra Network Radio with JUST2RAY.

The mix of past and present, the tradition in his production makes his music timeless, connecting with African cultural richness and projecting the search of new styles and rhythms.

His vital experience is also present in his notion of music as a collective endeavour and his idea that from the sum of different talents you got something that is not achieved individually. He has been guidance to many artists in producing their song’s and he is always open up to work with everyone.

    Rim Arrives / International Funk

    find out more

We’re very proud to present here the first of two legendary ‘lost’ albums both previously available only as rare-as-hen’s teeth private presses, from one Samuel K. Mfojo, the man known as Rim Kwaku Obeng.
As well as heralding the arrival as solo artist of an exciting new drummer, the title of his 1977 debut, Rim Arrives, also makes reference to the long struggle Kwaku had in getting to that point. To say that he ‘paid his dues’ is an understatement!
A member of one of Ghana’s most popular bands, the Uhuru Dance Band, during a period when ‘every song was a hit’, the recording studios of LA were even more alluring to an aspirant musician, and he followed his bandmate, Duke Oketa, there for a session in 1973. Despite having hired a massive string section, Oketa failed to provide charts for the session, and it was postponed for a week, with Kwaku being asked to write them instead. He turned it around, pocketed $700, and won the admiration of Quincy Jones who was hanging out at A&M’s studios and asked Kwaku to join him ... only to back off when Oketa intervened, threatening a lawsuit if Kwaku walked.
That scuppered opportunity was as nothing compared to the disaster that next befell him: having flown to London with Duke’s band, to record with ‘a band called Traffic’ and a young singer-songwriter called Joan Armatrading, Kwaku found himself marooned in the city without money, documentation or friends. Oketa had checked out of their hotel the first night, and had Kwaku’s passport and luggage with him. Despite the sympathy of the hotel staff, he found himself on the streets, and thus in 1973 began a six-month period as a homeless, destitute, undocumented stranger. That Kwaku by chance managed to meet Armatrading, who helped him get his life back on track, by chance passing Ronnie Scott’s where she was playing, was an even more unlikely twist in the fate of this promising young musician. He never found out why Oketa had abandoned him, but he fulfilled his promise, recording Rim Arrives in San Francisco in 1977.
That year was the zenith of disco, and pretty much anybody who entered a recording studio that year cut a disco record. Rim was no exception, his Ghanaian rhythms tailor-made for the percussive energy that was fuelling the clubs of the day. With a mixture of hot LA session musicians and African emigrés, he cut an album that very much captures the spirit of its time. As well as kit drums, conga and an array of percussive instruments, the multi-talented bandleader also played piano and clavinet on the sessions. Throw in some tight horn riffs, Fela-style call and response vocals, and you have an album that fits the current mania for both vintage African music and ever-more obscure disco perfectly. Cuts like Brushing Means Making Love, Gas Line and Believe In Yourself and have been tearing up dancefloors in the hands of specialist DJs for some time: now it’s time for the rest of the world to catch up.
Also included is International Funk, a very in-demand 12” he recorded later as Rim and The Believers, with drum machines and synths in full 1980s effect! Serious Afro-disco heat here, with the originals fetching silly money, these records were overlooked at the time, with the glut of amazing music that characterized the era; but, nearly four decades on, it’s fair to say that, Rim really has arrived!

African Praise or High-life Grooves is made up of about 80 percent Arpeggio patterns. It is therefore imperative as a bass guitarist to know what this whole arpeggio thing is all about. This Praise session consists of Arpeggios and triads etc... I have experimented most of the lessons we learned on arpeggios.
