Although some composers (Lully, Offenbach) weren't native to France, they obtained the French nationality later. That's why I've included them as french composers.

This video is not meant to disparage the works of other composers. There are lots of beautiful pieces that aren't included here, this is just a selection, it's almost impossible to fit them all in one video because of the time limit.

(Achille) Claude Debussy (22 August 1862 – 25 March 1918) was a French composer. He is sometimes seen as the first Impressionist composer, although he vigorously rejected the term. He was among the most influential composers of the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

Born to a family of modest means and little cultural involvement, Debussy showed enough musical talent to be admitted at the age of ten to France's leading music college, the Conservatoire de Paris. He originally studied the piano, but found his vocation in innovative composition, despite the disapproval of the Conservatoire's conservative professors. He took many years to develop his mature style, and was nearly 40 when he achieved international fame in 1902 with the only opera he completed, Pelléas et Mélisande.

Debussy's orchestral works include Prélude à l'après-midi d'un faune (1894), Nocturnes (1897–1899) and Images (1905–1912). His music was to a considerable extent a reaction against Wagner and the German musical tradition. He regarded the classical symphony as obsolete and sought an alternative in his symphonic sketches, La mer (1903–1905). His piano works include two books of Préludes and two of Études. Throughout his career he wrote mélodies based on a wide variety of poetry, including his own. He was greatly influenced by the Symbolist poetic movement of the later 19th century. A small number of works, including the early La Damoiselle élue and the late Le Martyre de saint Sébastien have important parts for chorus. In his final years, he focused on chamber music, completing three of six planned sonatas for different combinations of instruments.

With early influences including Russian and far-eastern music, Debussy developed his own style of harmony and orchestral colouring, derided – and unsuccessfully resisted – by much of the musical establishment of the day. His works have strongly influenced a wide range of composers including Béla Bartók, Olivier Messiaen, George Benjamin, and the jazz pianist and composer Bill Evans. Debussy died from cancer at his home in Paris at the age of 55 after a composing career of a little more than 30 years.

The application of the term Impressionist to Debussy and the music he influenced has been much debated, both during his lifetime and since. The analyst Richard Langham Smith writes that Impressionism was originally a term coined to describe a style of late 19th-century French painting, typically scenes suffused with reflected light in which the emphasis is on the overall impression rather than outline or clarity of detail, as in works by Monet, Pissarro, Renoir and others. Langham Smith writes that the term became transferred to the compositions of Debussy and others which were concerned with the representation of landscape or natural phenomena, particularly the water and light imagery dear to Impressionists, through subtle textures suffused with instrumental colour.

Among painters, Debussy particularly admired Turner, but also drew inspiration from Whistler. With the latter in mind the composer wrote to the violinist Eugène Ysaÿe in 1894 describing the orchestral Nocturnes as an experiment in the different combinations that can be obtained from one colour – what a study in grey would be in painting.

  • How to Sound Like Debussy

➡ Thank you for supporting me on Patreon!

In celebration of Claude Debussy's upcoming birthday (August 22, 1862), I dedicated Practice Notes 63 to him with How to Sound Like Claude Debussy. Like the other videos in this series, these obviously just cover the surface layer of Debussy's music -- I am in no way trying to diminish his musical depth with this type of analysis or breakdown. Think of it as a sort of how-to hack tutorial on playing or writing something in a style reminiscent of Debussy's music.

    Composer: Erik Satie
    Artists: Håkon Austbö (piano)

The unconventional French composer Erik Satie almost wrote anti-music. In slow motion (and without bars) his well-known Gymnopédies glide past. In other pieces one can hear more than faint echoes form the vaudeville theatre. Played by Håkon Austbø.

    6. The Barber of Seville - Act 2 - Fin 1:47:05

The Barber of Seville, or The Futile Precaution (Italian: Il barbiere di Siviglia, ossia L'inutile precauzione) is an opera buffa in two acts by Gioachino Rossini with an Italian libretto by Cesare Sterbini. The libretto was based on Pierre Beaumarchais's French comedy Le Barbier de Séville (1775). The première of Rossini's opera (under the title Almaviva, o sia L'inutile precauzione) took place on 20 February 1816 at the Teatro Argentina, Rome.

Gioacchino Rossini (1792 - 1868) was an Italian composer who wrote 39 operas as well as sacred music, chamber music, songs, and some instrumental and piano pieces. His best-known operas include the Italian comedies Il barbiere di Siviglia (The Barber of Seville) and La Cenerentola and the French-language epics Moïse et Pharaon and Guillaume Tell (William Tell). A tendency for inspired, song-like melodies is evident throughout his scores, which led to the nickname The Italian Mozart. Until his retirement in 1829, Rossini had been the most popular opera composer in history.

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (27 January 1756 – 5 December 1791) was a prolific and influential composer of the classical era.
Born in Salzburg, Mozart showed prodigious ability from his earliest childhood. Already competent on keyboard and violin, he composed from the age of five and performed before European royalty. Mozart was engaged as a musician at the Salzburg court, but grew restless and traveled in search of a better position. While visiting Vienna in 1781, he was dismissed from his Salzburg position. He chose to stay in the capital, where he achieved fame but little financial security. During his final years in Vienna, he composed many of his best-known symphonies, concertos, and operas, and portions of the Requiem, which was largely unfinished at the time of his early death at the age of 35. The circumstances of his early death have been much mythologized.

He composed more than 600 works, many acknowledged as pinnacles of symphonic, concertante, chamber, operatic, and choral music. He is among the most enduringly popular of classical composers, and his influence is profound on subsequent Western art music. Ludwig van Beethoven composed his own early works in the shadow of Mozart, and Joseph Haydn wrote: posterity will not see such a talent again in 100 years.

  • Understanding Augmented Sixth and Neapolitan Sixth Chords

    25:12

In this episode of Everything Music I explain the meaning, construction and application of Augmented Sixth and Neapolitan Sixth chords. I discuss the construction, voice leading and quick ways of identifying the Italian Sixth, French Sixth and German Sixth as well as the Neapolitan Sixth. The formulas are as follows:

Italian 6th - The only Augmented 6th chord that has 3 notes.
    (b6 - 1 - #4) notes of the key you are in Ex. Key of C major the Italian Sixth would be made up of : Ab - C - F# (b6 - 1 -#4)

French 6th - Augmented 6th chord that has 4 notes.
    (b6 - 1 - 2 - #4) notes of the key you are in Ex. Key of C major the French Sixth would be made up of : Ab - C - D - F# (b6 - 1 - 2 -#4) It is actually a Dom 7b5 chord if you make the A6 interval a b7 the chord would be A7b5 = Ab C D Gb

German 6th - Augmented 6th chord that has 4 notes.
    (b6 - 1 - b3 - #4) notes of the key you are in Ex. Key of C major the German Sixth would be made up of : Ab - C - Eb - F# (b6 - 1 - b3 -#4) It is actually a Dom7 chord if you make the A6 interval a b7 the chord would be Ab7 = Ab C Eb Gb

Pachelbel was a German composer, organist and teacher who brought the south German organ tradition to its peak. He composed a large body of sacred and secular music, and his contributions to the development of the chorale prelude and fugue have earned him a place among the most important composers of the middle Baroque era.

Pachelbel's music enjoyed enormous popularity during his lifetime; he had many pupils and his music became a model for the composers of south and central Germany. Today, Pachelbel is best known for the Canon in D, as well as the Chaconne in F minor, the Toccata in E minor for organ, and the Hexachordum Apollinis, a set of keyboard variations.

Pachelbel's music was influenced by southern German composers, such as Johann Jakob Froberger and Johann Kaspar Kerll, Italians such as Girolamo Frescobaldi and Alessandro Poglietti, French composers, and the composers of the Nuremberg tradition. He preferred a lucid, uncomplicated contrapuntal style that emphasized melodic and harmonic clarity. His music is less virtuosic and less adventurous harmonically than that of Dieterich Buxtehude, although, like Buxtehude, Pachelbel experimented with different ensembles and instrumental combinations in his chamber music and, most importantly, his vocal music, much of which features exceptionally rich instrumentation. Pachelbel explored many variation forms and associated techniques, which manifest themselves in various diverse pieces, from sacred concertos to harpsichord suites

  • Chopin - Spring Waltz Please Read Description

    5:12

????Disclaimer: This piece is also known as Mariage D'amour by Paul de Senneville. ''Chopin - Spring Waltz'' is just a pseudonym. Chopin hasn't written this piece. I uploaded this piece when I, just like you, didn't know the truth that this piece is not by Chopin! But... Unfortunately, if I'll change the name of this video to the correct one, other videos with name Chopin Spring Waltz will rise on top(there's hundreds of them!), so I put this disclaimer on top of description of the most popular video. I truly didn't want to pour misinformation around. I'm genuinely sorry for inconveniences it caused to you... :(

  • Classical Composers The French

    6:52

My list of some of the most important (and also some of the most neglected) french classical composers.

  • My Top 20 Composers - A personal list

    19:48

Note: This list is a personal list of favourite composers. I am not ranking them in order of their greatness, but instead I rank them in terms of where they would come in my personal favourites. I am sure that some people will be highly surprised that I have not a single baroque composer in my list, or the fact that Mozart is not in the list! This is because I relate more to music of the romantic era, or the 20th century as there is I believe more power and passion in the music.
I was originally going to do a top 25 list, but that would have made the video far too long. But if you want to know, the extra five I would have included would have been Mozart, Bach, Bartok, Schoenberg and Berlioz.

I dedicate this video to my good friend, Basil. Please take a look at his channel which has many great videos on it. :)

Please feel free to write comments on the video, remember that these are just my own personal favourites. :)

Please take a listen to my own compositions if you are interested -

    Thank you for watching/listening!

  • Top 25 composers of XX century

    5:17

My second list of 25 composers of 20th century, the first one was uploaded on my first channel 0707NicePlayer.
Well, i tried to make a complex list, with no limits, just as i feel it.
The top 3 is a personal opinion, obiouvsly Stravinsky is great, Debussy is a genius, but Schoenberg's system defined the musical way of the century, grace to him appeared many other major composers of xxth century as Stockhausen, Cage, Messiaen, that were related to his revolution.

The video is dedicated to my friend, elgarian497, Daniel Hogan, he has an amazing channel on youtube:

So you can see there lots of amazing videos.

  • ♫ Erik Satie ♫ Classical Music Study - Relaxing Classical Music for relaxation and studying Sleep

    2:49

Classical Music - Erik Satie - Classical music for relaxation and studying. Gymnopédie No. 1.
    Follow us on Facebook:
    Web:

Éric Alfred Leslie Satie (17 May 1866 -- Paris, 1 July 1925; signed his name Erik Satie after 1884) was a French composer and pianist. Satie was a colourful figure in the early 20th century Parisian avant-garde. His work was a precursor to later artistic movements such as minimalism, repetitive music, and the Theatre of the Absurd. An eccentric, Satie was introduced as a gymnopedist in 1887, shortly before writing his most famous compositions, the Gymnopédies. Later, he also referred to himself as a phonometrician (meaning someone who measures sounds) preferring this designation to that of a musician, after having been called a clumsy but subtle technician in a book on contemporary French composers published in 1911. In addition to his body of music, Satie also left a remarkable set of writings, having contributed work for a range of publications, from the dadaist 391 to the American top culture chronicle Vanity Fair. Although in later life he prided himself on always publishing his work under his own name, in the late nineteenth century he appears to have used pseudonyms such as Virginie Lebeau and François de Paule in some of his published writings.

These short, atmospheric pieces are written in 3/4 time, with each sharing a common theme and structure. For instance, the first few bars of Gymnopédie No. 1 consist of an alternating progression of two major seventh chords, the first on the subdominant, G, and the second on the tonic, D.

The melodies of the pieces use deliberate, but mild, dissonances against the harmony, producing a piquant, melancholy effect that matches the performance instructions, which are to play each piece painfully, sadly or gravely.

  • Michel Legrand Orchestra - Three Musketeers Love theme

    4:41

A lovely theme conjured by the French composer for 1970s film Three Musketeers with strings to the fore. Assuming the basics of playing and singing. What is the worst said of a musician ? Probably dullness. It's antithetical to everything music should be. Somewhere in these pages this observation is worth a moment or two. Mention Legrand and someone somewhere is apt to quip ~over orchestrated. Maurice Ravel was accused of over orchestrating yet he makes the world's greatest composers list. Some glory in the colours of the orchestra throwing shapes of all sorts for all temperaments. Exultation in music .jazz rock and classical. ~ great. Legrand's music may not major in smiling gently but ~ his music is wide spanned~ vocal and orchestral. .Legrand is ~International ~ informed by a roll call of Gallic virtues elegance clarity economy dexterity and wit. . There's a robust energy about his jazz that is more International than French but the style is unswervingly Gallic.. His songs defy a national ghetto. evidenced by the response to latterday standards such as Watch What Happens. ~ , one of dozens here to stay
