Although some composers (Lully, Offenbach) weren't native to France, they obtained the French nationality later. That's why I've included them as french composers.

This video is not meant to disparage the works of other composers. There are lots of beautiful pieces that aren't included here, this is just a selection, it's almost impossible to fit them all in one video because of the time limit.

Impressionism in music was a movement among various composers in Western classical music (mainly during the late 19th and early 20th centuries) whose music focuses on suggestion and atmosphere, conveying the moods and emotions aroused by the subject rather than a detailed tone‐picture. Impressionism is a philosophical and aesthetic term borrowed from late 19th century French painting after Monet's Impression, Sunrise. Composers were labeled impressionists by analogy to the impressionist painters who use starkly contrasting colors, effect of light on an object, blurry foreground and background, flattening perspective, etc. to make the observer focus his attention on the overall impression.
The most prominent in musical impressionism is the use of color, or in musical term, timbre, which can be achieved through orchestration, harmonic usage, texture, etc. Other elements of music impressionism also involve new chord combinations, ambiguous tonality, extended harmonies, use of modes and exotic scales, parallel motions, extra-musicality, and evocative titles.

BEST OF BAROQUE MUSIC COMPOSERS A TO Z, PART I / Who are the best baroque composers? If you had to only pick one Baroque composer for each letter of the alphabet, who would make your list of the “Best of Baroque”?

In this video I give you *my* A to Z list of who I think are the best composers of Baroque music. There’s a catch, though--I can only give one composer for each letter, so the greats like Johann Sebastian Bach and George Frideric Handel make it on, but you might be surprised to discover some other composers you’re unfamiliar with. I hope you find some new music and new Baroque composers to explore!

This video is Part I of a three part series: it covers the letters A through H.

  • Renaud Capuçon records violin theme, Schindlers List

    4:15

From the album 'Cinema', Renaud Capuçon, out 12 October 2018.
'Film music can be sublime and has attracted some truly great composers;’ says Renaud Capuçon of his latest release, Cinéma. ‘This album is something of a dream come true.’ The French star violinist’s homage to the silver screen features unforgettable themes -- in stunning new arrangements – from Ennio Morricone (Cinema Paradiso, Mission), Nino Rota, John Williams (Schindler’s List), James Horner (Legends of the Fall), to more recent blockbusters (Twilight) and iconic French films (Amélie). Capuçon powerfully and sensitively evokes the magic of the cinema with the aid of the Brussels Philharmonic and conductor Stéphane Denève.

I am not native nor expert on any of the languages of this video, so don´t take this video as infallible. But I think it should be more accurate than those videos about some random guy trying to teach us how to pronounce these names.

And also, sorry for the bad quality on some of the audios, specially on russian names: it is the raw archive from google translator so blame google instead of me -_-

These are the names that appear in the video, in this particular order:

    Composer: Erik Satie
    Artists: Håkon Austbö (piano)

The unconventional French composer Erik Satie almost wrote anti-music. In slow motion (and without bars) his well-known Gymnopédies glide past. In other pieces one can hear more than faint echoes form the vaudeville theatre. Played by Håkon Austbø.

The EC and the Channel Tunnel notwithstanding, the twenty-first century finds France and Britain still viewing each other suspiciously across the same twenty-five mile ditch, their centuries-old legacy of political rivalry and mutual opprobrium more or less intact. It does not help that the English insist on addressing their Gallic neighbours in GCSE French – a language unknown in France – and that the French themselves remain doggedly monoglot. However, one curious side-effect of this long-standing trans-Channel information gap is that each side secretly suspects the other of having a superior grasp of the universe, indeed of probably having a better time generally.
Does this mean that much of the mystique surrounding the great French vocalists and French chansons – merely their word for ‘songs’ after all – is the result of wilful Anglo-Saxon self-delusion? The probable answer is yes, given that most of our parents and grandparents would have had few clues as to whether Edith Piaf (known as the Little Sparrow), Jean Sablon and Charles Trenet were singing about a lost love or a light lunch. However, this in itself is a sort of tribute to a generation of French singers whose talents were compelling enough to bridge the linguistic divide between them and their foreign audience.
Delightful music for cafes, or coffee shops - imagine yourself back in time in Paris with relaxing chansons floating through the air.

  • Charles-Marie Widor - Fantasy for Piano and Orchestra Op. 62

    23:08

Charles-Marie Jean Albert Widor (21 February 1844 – 12 March 1937) was a French organist, composer and teacher, most notable for his ten organ symphonies.

    Please support my channel:

Fantasy for Piano and Orchestra in A-flat major, Op. 62 (1889)
    Dedication: Isidor Philipp

Martin Roscoe, piano and BBC Concert Orchestra conducted by Martin Yates

Widor dedicated his Fantasy to Isidor Philipp, one of the greatest piano teachers of the 20th Century.

Isidor Philipp studied piano under Georges Mathias (a pupil of Frédéric Chopin and Friedrich Kalkbrenner) at the Conservatoire de Paris and won First Prize in piano performance in 1883. Other teachers included Camille Saint-Saëns, Stephen Heller (a pupil of Carl Czerny, one of Beethoven's students) and Théodore Ritter (a pupil of Franz Liszt). At the Conservatoire, he met fellow student Claude Debussy. They remained lifelong friends, and Philipp often played his compositions. After Debussy's death, Philipp was regarded as the leading authority on his piano music.

The list of Isidor Philipp's students who became notable pianists, composers or conductors is very long, and includes Stell Andersen, Dwight Anderson, Grace Barnes, Emma Boynet, Harold Bradley (pianist), John Buttrick, Serge Conus, Aaron Copland, Jeanne-Marie Darré, Pierre Dervaux, Ania Dorfmann, Rolande Falcinelli, Felix Fox, Jean Françaix, Henri Gagnon, Florence Parr Gere, Youra Guller, Georges Hugon, Fernando Laires, Malvina Leshock, Yvonne Loriod, Nikita Magaloff, Federico Mompou, Léo-Pol Morin, Guiomar Novaes, Ozan Marsh, Wilfrid Pelletier, Émile Poillot, Harrison Potter, noted philosopher Albert Schweitzer, Phyllis Sellick, Soulima Stravinsky, Louise Talma, Alexander Tcherepnin, Dorothy Wanderman, Mabel Madison Watson, Beveridge Webster, and Victor Young.

Additionally, many prominent and well established pianists would seek out his advice, particularly on playing French composers, which included Claude Debussy. Philipp often championed new music throughout his long life, and would frequently edit the works of contemporary composers, such as Sergei Prokofiev and Maurice Ravel. He was close friends with many of the leading pianists and composers of his day, including Leopold Godowsky, Ferruccio Busoni, Josef Hofmann, Ignacy Jan Paderewski, Alfred Cortot, Lazare-Lévy, Emile-Robert Blanchet, Béla Bartók, Nadia Boulanger, Jules Massenet, Cécile Chaminade, Gabriel Fauré and Charles-Marie Widor.

Pianist Rudolf Serkin said that not having studied with Philipp was one of the regrets of his life. Later, he knew several of Philipp's students in Vienna, and said 'all of them were brilliant.

  • The Best of Debussy

    1:47:16

    The Best of Achille-Claude Debussy (22 August 1862 -- 25 March 1918)

    Pianist: Pascal Rogé

Along with Maurice Ravel, Debussy was one of the most prominent figures associated with Impressionist music, though he himself intensely disliked the term when applied to his compositions. In France, he was made Chevalier of the Legion of Honour in 1903. Debussy was among the most influential composers of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and his use of non-traditional scales and chromaticism influenced many composers who followed. Debussy's music is noted for its sensory content and frequent eschewing of tonality. The French literary style of his period was known as Symbolism, and this movement directly inspired Debussy both as a composer and as an active cultural participant.

Frederic Francois Chopin (22 February or 1 March 1810 -- 17 October 1849) was a Polish composer, virtuoso pianist, and music teacher of French--Polish parentage. He was one of the great masters of Romantic music and has been called the poet of the piano. Chopin was born in Zelazowa Wola, a village in the Duchy of Warsaw. A renowned child-prodigy pianist and composer, he grew up in Warsaw and completed his musical education there. Following the Russian suppression of the Polish November 1830 Uprising, he settled in Paris as part of the Polish Great Emigration. He supported himself as a composer and piano teacher, giving few public performances. From 1837 to 1847 he carried on a relationship with the French woman writer George Sand. For most of his life, Chopin suffered from poor health; he died in Paris in 1849 at the age of 39. The vast majority of Chopin's works are exclusively for solo piano, the most notable exceptions being his two piano concertos. His compositions are technically demanding but emphasize nuance and expressive depth. Chopin invented the musical form known as the instrumental ballade and made major innovations to the piano sonata, mazurka, waltz, nocturne, polonaise, etude, impromptu, scherzo, and prelude.

Nocturne Oubliée in C sharp minor by Markus Staab

  • Francis Poulenc - Sonata for Flute and Piano

    12:46

    - Composer: Francis Jean Marcel Poulenc (7 January 1899 -- 30 January 1963)
    - Performers: Michel Debost (flute), Jacques Février (piano)
    - Year of recording: 1973

Sonata for flute & piano, FP 164, written in 1956-1957.

    00:00 - I. Allegretto malincolico
04:54 - II. Cantilena (Assez lent)
    09:11 - III. Presto giocoso

The French affection for the flute is brilliantly demonstrated in Francis Poulenc's virtuosic Sonata for Flute and Piano. Each of the work's three movements is fluent and graceful in different ways.

    - The first movement, Allegro malincolico, sounds sweetly sad rather than melancholy.
    - The second movement is a dreamy cantilena for flute in an indeterminate key, while...
    - the third, a chirpy Presto giocoso, puts Romantic ideas to rest with a skittish tune full of relaxed good humor.

The whole is typical of the suave yet piquant style of Poulenc's instrumental music, and the honors (and difficulties!) are shared by both flutist and pianist.

The sonata is dedicated: à la mémoire de Madame Elizabeth Sprague Coolidge, an American patron of chamber music.

Pachelbel was a German composer, organist and teacher who brought the south German organ tradition to its peak. He composed a large body of sacred and secular music, and his contributions to the development of the chorale prelude and fugue have earned him a place among the most important composers of the middle Baroque era.

Pachelbel's music enjoyed enormous popularity during his lifetime; he had many pupils and his music became a model for the composers of south and central Germany. Today, Pachelbel is best known for the Canon in D, as well as the Chaconne in F minor, the Toccata in E minor for organ, and the Hexachordum Apollinis, a set of keyboard variations.

Pachelbel's music was influenced by southern German composers, such as Johann Jakob Froberger and Johann Kaspar Kerll, Italians such as Girolamo Frescobaldi and Alessandro Poglietti, French composers, and the composers of the Nuremberg tradition. He preferred a lucid, uncomplicated contrapuntal style that emphasized melodic and harmonic clarity. His music is less virtuosic and less adventurous harmonically than that of Dieterich Buxtehude, although, like Buxtehude, Pachelbel experimented with different ensembles and instrumental combinations in his chamber music and, most importantly, his vocal music, much of which features exceptionally rich instrumentation. Pachelbel explored many variation forms and associated techniques, which manifest themselves in various diverse pieces, from sacred concertos to harpsichord suites

John Williams & Vienna Philharmonic – Williams: Imperial March (from “Star Wars”)
    Discover “John Williams in Vienna”:

John Williams’ movie soundtracks are among the best-loved of all time. Before a single note had been played at the Hollywood legend’s debut concert with the Vienna Philharmonic, Maestro Williams received a standing ovation. Their sensational performance of the “Imperial March” from “Star Wars” underlined the rapport and affection between orchestra and composer. “It was honestly one of the best presentations of that March I’ve ever heard”, Williams reflected afterwards. “They played it as though they owned it.”

Deutsche Grammophon releases Williams’ historic Vienna Philharmonic debut concert in audio and video formats. 'John Williams in Vienna' is now available! Also available in Dolby Atmos®.

  • The Best of Schubert

    1:16:37

The Best of Franz Peter Schubert (31 January 1797 -- 19 November 1828)

In a short lifespan of less than 32 years, Schubert was a prolific composer, writing some 600 Lieder, ten complete or nearly complete symphonies, liturgical music, operas, incidental music and a large body of chamber and solo piano music. Appreciation of his music while he was alive was limited to a relatively small circle of admirers in Vienna, but interest in his work increased significantly in the decades immediately after his death. Felix Mendelssohn, Robert Schumann, Franz Liszt, Johannes Brahms and other 19th-century composers discovered and championed his works. Today, Schubert is ranked among the greatest composers of the early Romantic era and, as such, is one of the most frequently performed composers of the early nineteenth century.

    ABOUT THE VIDEO

This piece is originally written by Paul de Senneville and performed by Richard Clayderman. The piece was rearranged by pianist George Davidson and it is his version I perform here. This version is also incorrectly known as Chopin's Spring Waltz. I believe this is caused by a popular, but wrong titled, video here on youtube.

  • Saint-Saëns: Chamber Music

    1:6:54

    Streaming & Downloads:
    Physical Sale:
    Facebook Brilliant Classics:

    Composer: Camille Saint-Saëns
Artists: Soloists of the Accademia di Santa Cecilia Rome, Akanè Makita (piano), Andrea Oliva (flute), Francesco Bossone (bassoon), Stefano Novelli (clarinet), Francesco Di Rosa (oboe), Alessio Allegrini (horn)

The wind instrumentalists here are members of Rome’s main orchestra, attached to the Accademia nazionale di Santa Cecilia, and their previous disc on Brilliant Classics with Akanè Makita, of chamber music by Henri Dutilleux (BC94738) won recognition both for the original combination of repertoire and the stylish performances: ‘Francesco Bossone and Akanè Makita do the work proud, playing with real character and in excellent balance with each other’ (Musicweb International).

Here they turn to the instant charms of the chamber music by Camille Saint-Saëns, centred around the three sonatas for oboe, clarinet and bassoon. All written within the year 1921, they are the work of a composer who was born 10 years after the death of Beethoven and whose lifetime overlapped with the dawn of jazz in Europe. Little wonder, then, that such pieces embody a remarkable synthesis of styles, to the extent that they hardly seem to be by the same composer as the highly embellished chamber music for strings or the grand statements of the symphonies. They do, however, retain a sense of dramatic dialogue that runs through the composer’s output, for Saint-Saëns was always a theatrical composer even when not writing for the stage. The constant stream of melodies speak of a master of refined simplicity and unfailingly elegant lightness of spirit.

The two Romances for horn and piano date from much earlier in the composer’s prolific career (1874 and 1885); they proceed not in the compressed version of sonata-form belonging to the later works, but in narrative sections which range from sweetly nostalgic to the turbulent or heroic. Rounding off this irresistible collection is the Op.79 Caprice on Russian and Danish Airs for flute, oboe, clarinet and piano: here is the cheerful Saint-Saëns of the Carnival of the Animals, running through folk tunes and their transformations with balletic grace and fluidity, underpinned by a brilliant, impetuous piano part that shows what a virtuoso this multi-talented composer was in his own right.

  • My Top 20 Composers - A personal list

    19:48

Note: This list is a personal list of favourite composers. I am not ranking them in order of their greatness, but instead I rank them in terms of where they would come in my personal favourites. I am sure that some people will be highly surprised that I have not a single baroque composer in my list, or the fact that Mozart is not in the list! This is because I relate more to music of the romantic era, or the 20th century as there is I believe more power and passion in the music.
I was originally going to do a top 25 list, but that would have made the video far too long. But if you want to know, the extra five I would have included would have been Mozart, Bach, Bartok, Schoenberg and Berlioz.

I dedicate this video to my good friend, Basil. Please take a look at his channel which has many great videos on it. :)

Please feel free to write comments on the video, remember that these are just my own personal favourites. :)

Please take a listen to my own compositions if you are interested -

    Thank you for watching/listening!
