    Lyrics:

    I was a highwayman
Along the coach roads I did ride
With sword and pistol by my side
Many a young maid lost her baubles to my trade
Many a soldier shed his lifeblood on my blade
The bastards hung me in the spring of twenty-five
    But I am still alive

    I'll fly a starship
    Across the Universe divide
And when I reach the other side
I'll find a place to rest my spirit if I can
Perhaps I may become a highwayman again
Or I may simply be a single drop of rain
    But I will remain
And I'll be back again, and again and again and again and again...

  • ‘Symphony No 4’ - Lutoslawski | The Purcell School Celebrates Oliver Knussen

    20:09

On Sunday 1st March, The Purcell School presented a whole day of stunning music-making in memory of Oliver Knussen, with four concerts given by over 100 outstanding Purcell students, staff, alumni and guests at the Southbank Centre.

Oliver was a Purcell student before he became the famous, beloved giant of the music world. These programmes honour his memory and all he did to promote music in the school, in the UK and throughout the world. Three daytime recitals took place in the Purcell Room followed by an orchestral concert in the QEH in the evening, showcasing music with links to Knussen, as well as Beethoven’s 250th anniversary plus Sonya Knussen, the composer’s daughter and a Purcell alumna, narrating Britten’s ‘Young Person’s Guide’.

The Purcell School Celebrates Oliver Knussen
March 1st 2020, Queen Elizabeth Hall, Southbank Centre

    The Purcell School Symphony Orchestra
Conductors: Paul Hoskins, Jack Gonzalez Harding*
    Narrator: Sonya Knussen

Whilst at Purcell, students share a common bond in their passion for music with a community boasting creativity and mutual support.

  • O. Merikanto: Kullan Murunen

    1:19

    Oskar Merikanto (1868 - 1924): Kullan Murenen
    Willy Postma, harp

The painting in the video is: Drottning Blanka (Queen Blanka) painted by Albert Edelfelt in 1877. Albert Edelfelt (1854 - 1905) was a Swedish-speaking Finnish painter. Edelfelt was one of the first Finnish artists to achieve international fame. He enjoyed considerable success in Paris and was one of the founders of the Realist art movement in Finland. He influenced several younger Finnish painters and helped fellow Finnish artists such as Akseli Gallen-Kallela to make their breakthrough in Paris.

Oskar Merikanto was undoubtedly overshadowed by his Finnish countryman and contemporary, Jean Sibelius. That said, Merikanto was an important musical figure in his sphere still, particularly for his work in opera, song, and church music. He was instrumental in bringing operatic performances to the stage in Finland, and his Pohjan neiti (Maiden of the North) was the first Finnish-language opera ever produced. In the realm of church music Merikanto was active both as an educator and composer. But he will probably be best remembered for his songs. A good many of them from his numerous collections (nearly 50 in all!) and from among various lone efforts scattered throughout his output without opus, are regularly heard in recitals and on recordings. Perusing Merikanto's works list, one is struck by its enormity: for chorus alone there are well over 100 entries (some representing sizable collections), and for piano over 80, a body of work that contains, however, not one sonata or concerto! Merikanto typically wrote short works for solo instruments and voice, but his operas and incidental scores for the theater broke with this miniature-like pattern.
Oskar Merikanto was born in Helsinki, Finland, on August 5, 1868. Like Sibelius, his parents were Swedish speakers. The family name, too, Mattsson, was Swedish, which the father changed to the more Finnish-sounding Merikanto. Young Oskar divulged musical talent early on, with exceptional skills on the organ and piano.
In the period 1887-1888, Merikanto studied music at the Leipzig Conservatory. Even by this time, though, he was already active as a composer, with numerous piano works to his credit, including the Fantasia, for four hands (1885) and Two Träumerei (1887), as well as pieces for organ and songs.
Merikanto concluded his studies in Berlin in 1890-1891. In 1893 his son Aarre was born. He would also become a noted composer, his father being his first teacher and a profound influence in his life. In 1898 the elder Merikanto wrote the aforementioned opera Pohjan neiti, but it was not staged until 1908. From the early twentieth century Merikanto worked to promote opera in Finland, conducting and arranging many major performances.
Merikanto remained quite active in composition throughout his life. Perhaps his most popular sacred work, the hymn Thank you, Lord! from 1924, was among his last. But it still showed his usual mastery and inspiration. Merikanto died in Hausjärvi-Oitti on February 17, 1924.
    (by Robert Cummings)

Harpist Willy Postma was born in Amsterdam. After attending Schools in Rotterdam, Paris and New York, she came to Noway at an early age and has been affiliated with the Trondhein Symphony Orchestra since 1964. Prizewinner of the International Harp Competition in Israel in 1970 Postma has had an all-round career as soloist, chamber-music performer and teacher. Postma has recorded several CD albums and has been a frequent guest on television and radio programmes. In 1980 she started the Nordic countries' first harp class in Trondheim, a class she still conducts. Since 1991 she has been a teacher at the Norwegian State Academy of Music and since 1992 also at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki.

  • Mikko Kosonen Pedal Dogma Pt. 7 - Keeley Dark Side

    11:51

The idea was strange to begin with.

Finnish A-list guitarist Mikko Kosonen called me up one morning and told me he had bought a Keeley Electronics effect pedal that was highly inspiring. Mikko had written a new song using the pedal in question and he now wanted to try every Keeley pedal available.

In Mikko’s view a pedal is an instrument, too, just like a guitar. An effect should give something back to the musician and bring out music along with it. The technical details of pedals or their “vintage authenticity”, on the other hand, do not really interest him.

Mikko was eager to tape Dogma-style videos of every available Keeley effect. The idea was that he would play each effect for the first time with the camera rolling. He wanted the pedal to inspire the direction his improvisation would take, instead of carefully planning each video’s musical content beforehand.

VIDEO SHOOT DAY arrived. Mikko knew he had to pick up his children from day care in the afternoon, but we would try to record as many clips as possible before he would have to leave.

Mikko had spent his previous day in a TV-studio. The man was tired, but clearly used to perform under any conditions. We managed to get a whopping 18 videos in the can!

We were using a sort of “shotgun method” to tape our videos. We selected an effect pedal, hooked it up and then we set our camera and recording equipment on “record”.

The resulting videos are full of aural excitement, with a good taste of danger, some mistakes and a few surprises thrown in.

We used the three cameras we could find at Custom Boards HQ for our shoot.

All guitar parts were recorded going through a Kemper profiling amp connected to an audio interface and then straight onto hard-disk. We used the Vox AC30 profile that comes with the Kemper. We didn’t use ambient mikes or additional reverb – all the sounds you’ll hear come straight off the Kemper. Neither audio nor video have gone through additional editing or processing, instead they have been left raw, staying true to our Dogma ethos.

The first six videos from our shoot were published in October 2017 and they got very inspired reception in Finland. Next batch of editing took a while, but here they are.

Total of 18 videos with the man and his guitar struggling through effects he has never seen before, thinking what to play, twisting wrong knobs and doing lots of things that a ”normal” user would never found from these pedals.

I really do admire Mikko’s attitude.

A less experienced guitarist would have become jittery in the knowledge that the videos would be shared on YouTube, especially as he didn’t know what to expect when stepping on the pedal for the first time.

But it is exactly this fearlessness that makes these video so interesting and fun to watch.

Dalindèo is a Finnish jazz-sextet founded and led by composer/guitarist Valtteri Laurell Pöyhönen in 2003. Their music is a cinematic jazz creation reminiscient of the ambience of movies by Finnish great Aki Kaurismäki mixed with a Tarantinoesque vibe of danger and suspense. With musical influences ranging from Duke Ellington's swing jazz to surf-guitars à la Dick Dale, all in a setting inspired by Finnish popular music from the 1950's, Dalindèo have created a contemporary Finnish jazz-style of their own.
In 2013 Dalindèo released their third album Kallio in Finland on the Suomen Musiikki-label. The album won the prize of Best Jazz Album of 2013 at the Emma-Awards, the Finnish Grammys. A musical hommage to the Kallio-district in Helsinki, it debuted on the Finnish album-chart at number 13, one of the highest ranking jazz albums of all time and stayed on the chart for 6 weeks.
We at BBE are very proud to present Kallio to a wider, international audience. Especially for the worldwide release on BBE the band added an exclusive unreleased bonus track to the album and BBE family-member Mr Bird did a brilliant remix of the track “Rhythm of Kallio”. As a live act Dalindèo has gained a reputation as a tight and energetic performer. The band's interplay is as tight as ever after 150+ gigs in Finland and 12 other European countries. Dalindèo's line-up includes some of Finland's top jazz musicians: leader Valtteri Laurell Pöyhönen (guitar), Pope Puolitaival (sax), Jose Mäenpää (trumpet), Pekka Lehti (double-bass), Rasmus Pailos (percussion) and Jaska Lukkarinen (drums). The line-up has stayed the same throughout the years and as this brings depth unachieved by session-musicians to the band's interplay.

  • Magical concert - Nicolas Altstaedt plays Astor Piazzollas Le Grand Tango by a lake

    11:05

This concert is magical! Cellist Nicolas Altstaedt plays Astor Piazzolla's Le Grand Tango with his friend, pianist Julien Quentin, in the twilight on a lakeside stage. Great musicians playing a composition that wrote musical history, in a special place at the perfect time of the evening: what could be better than that?

Nicolas Altstaedt's cello playing is considered a revelation. Born to German-French parents, Nicolas Altstaedt was one of Boris Pergamenschikow's last students at the Hanns Eisler Academy of Music in Berlin. He completed his studies under Eberhard Feltz. One of the most sought-after and versatile artists working today, Nicolas Altstaedt is an award-winning soloist, conductor and artistic director. His repertoire reaches from early music to contemporary compositions.

For this concert, Nicolas Altstaedt and pianist Julien Quentin perform “Le Grand Tango” by the King of Tango,” Argentinian composer Astor Piazzolla. With this composition, Piazzolla exemplifies the spirit of nuevo tango: traditional tango rhythms combined with jazz elements. Piazzolla wrote the piece in 1982 for Russian cellist Mstislav Rostropovich, who premiered it in New Orleans in 1990.

Nicolas Altstaedt and pianist Julien Quentin play it at a very special place - the lake stage at the Turbinenhalle on Stienitzsee near Berlin. It's a place the two musicians associate with wonderful concerts they have played there. Nicolas Altstaedt says this lake is the most beautiful place he can imagine. So it was the natural choice for a location when DW Classical Music asked Nicolas Altstaedt to perform a special Anti-Corona Concert for us.

DW Classical Music is offering a digital stage for some of the many classical music artists who are currently unable to perform. The recordings are made by the artists themselves or by a single camera operator.

Enjoy the magical atmosphere of this unique concert and tell us how you liked it in our comments. We look forward to hearing from you.

Led Zeppelin's John Paul Jones Set To Perform First Dates With Sons of Chipotle
July 23, 2019 – Well this is a long way from Zeppelin but it is adventurous. Jones and Finnish cellist Anssi Karttunen are Sons Of Chipotle and they are doing shows in Tokyo on Sept 3rd and 5th. They will also have guest musicians on stage.
Anssi Karttunen is considered one of the worlds top cellists and has performed with the big symphonies around the globe.
John Paul Jones website had a statement that said, “Both musicians are known to be curious minds, always ready to learn and to discover, When they improvise, borders disappear, they are free to migrate beyond prejudices, across continents. In a world where walls are being built and people are told where they cannot go, Sons of Chipotle want music to be a place of openness.”

He's done some interesting projects through the years Them Crooked Vultures with Dave Grohl and he also worked with Karttunen in Tres Coyotes. - by John Beaudin

    Format: Vinyl, 7''
    Country: Norway
    Released: 1965

    Tracklist
    A1 A Brand New Cadillac
    B1 Need Your Love

    ------------------------

Brand New Cadillac is a 1959 12-bar blues song by Vince Taylor, and was originally released as a B-side.
Featured musicians on the released recording were: Joe Moretti (guitars), Lou Brian (piano), Brian Locking (bass) and Brian Bennett (drums).

The song was covered in the 1960s by the British beat group Downliners Sect.
In The Nordic Countries the song was very successful by other bands.
British band The Renegades hailing from Birmingham credited the song with respective band members.
They dropped parts of the verses also shortening the title to Cadillac.
It became number one on Finnish radio's people's choice list and No. 2 on singles' list in Finland 1964.

Based on The Renegades' version, Swedish band Hep Stars did their arrangement which April 1965 took No. 1 slot in Sweden's singles' list and radiolist.
Another Swedish band Shamrocks recorded the song at the same time.
Instead of Sweden it was hit in France becoming No. 1 on radiolist as well and was successful in Germany and Japan.

By now Vince Taylor's record company had got the information and claims ensued.
The cause was settled on agreement to add Taylor's name to songwiriting credits along The Renegades members sharing the royalties in half.
Neither Hep Stars nor Shamrocks were aware of Vince Taylor's original version at the time of recordings.
Therefore it is possible to find their 1960's recordings credited either to (Kim) Brown-(Denys) Gibson- (Ian) Mallet-(Stuart Graham) Johnson or Brown-Gibson-Mallet-Johnson-Taylor. Denys Gibson should not be confused to Terry Gibson of Downliners Sect.

In 1971, Mott The Hoople, during a concert recording in Stockholm, inserted a verse of it in their version of Little Richard's Keep a-Knockin' (released on the live album A Tale of Two Cities in 2000).
The Slickee Boys released a version on their 1976 debut EP, Hot and Cool (later compiled on their Here to Stay album).
The Clash covered it on their 1979 album London Calling.
In 1980 Canadian punk band Teenage Head recorded a version on their second album Frantic City.
It was also covered by the Brian Setzer Orchestra on their self-titled debut album in 1994, and by Wayne Hancock on his 1997 album, That's What Daddy Wants.

The song has been included at many Van Morrison concerts, appearing as a medley with Goin' Down Geneva, which is about Taylor.
The Fall covered it in 1978.

    ------------------------

(Don't Fear) The Reaper is a song by the American rock band Blue Öyster Cult from their 1976 album, Agents of Fortune.
It was written and sung by the band's lead guitarist, Donald Buck Dharma Roeser and was produced by David Lucas, Murray Krugman, and Sandy Pearlman.

The lyrics deal with eternal love and the inevitability of death.
Dharma wrote the song while picturing an early death for himself.

The edited single version was Blue Öyster Cult's biggest chart success, reaching number 12 on the Billboard Hot 100 in November 1976.
    Critical reception was mainly positive.

In 2004, (Don't Fear) The Reaper was listed at number 397 on the Rolling Stone list of the top 500 songs of all time.

    Background

(Don't Fear) The Reaper was written and sung by the band's lead guitarist, Donald Buck Dharma Roeser and was produced by David Lucas, Murray Krugman, and Sandy Pearlman.
The song is about the inevitability of death and the foolishness of fearing it, and was written when Dharma was thinking about what would happen if he died at a young age. Lyrics such as Romeo and Juliet are together in eternity have led many listeners to interpret the song to be about a murder-suicide pact, but Dharma says the song is about eternal love, not suicide.
He used Romeo and Juliet as motifs to describe a couple believing they would meet again in the afterlife.
He guessed that 40,000 men and women died each day, and the figure was used several times in the lyrics.

    Other versions

Blue Öyster Cult performed a live version of (Don't Fear) The Reaper on the band's 1978 album Some Enchanted Evening.
A live version appears on their 1981 album Extraterrestrial Live.
Blue Öyster Cult's 1991 live album Live 1976 features (Don't Fear) The Reaper.
A live version appears on their 2002 album A Long Day's Night.
Buck Dharma released an acoustic version of the song on the 1994 various artists compilation album Guitar Practicing Musicians 3.

Finnish rock (then gothic metal) band H.I.M. recorded a version of the song on their 1997 debut album Greatest Lovesongs, Vol. 666.

Pop rock band the Goo Goo Dolls recorded a cover of (Don't Fear) The Reaper on their 1987 self-titled album.
In 1992, Clint Ruin and Lydia Lunch released the extended play Don't Fear the Reaper, on which their rendition of the song appears.

Apollo 440 transcribed an electronic version of the track on the 1995 debut album Millennium Fever.

In 1998, Jive Bunny & the Mastermixers recorded a cover of the song on their Rock the Party album.

Celtic rock band Big Country included a cover of the song on their 2001 covers album Under Cover.

The Mutton Birds included their version of the song on their 2002 greatest hits compilation Flock: The Best of the Mutton Birds.

Folk rock band Unto Ashes issued a rendition of (Don't Fear) The Reaper on the 2003 album Empty into White.

Alternative rock group The Beautiful South covered the song on their 2004 album Golddiggas, Headnodders and Pholk Songs.

(Don't Fear) The Reaper was covered by hardcore punk band Snuff on their 2005 album Six of One, Half a Dozen of the Other: 1986-2002.

Synthpop band Heaven 17 recorded a cover of the song on their album Before After, also released in 2005.

Pat DiNizio, frontman for the Smithereens, covered the song on his 2006 solo album This Is Pat DiNizio.

In 2008, jam band moe. recorded a live version of the song on their Dr. Stan's Prescription, Volume 2 album.

Rock band L.A. Guns added a version of the song on their 2010 covers album Covered in Guns.

The song has appeared in several films, most notably 1978's Halloween.

The song was memorialized in the April 2000 Saturday Night Live comedy sketch More cowbell.

The six-minute sketch presents a fictionalized version of the recording of (Don't Fear) The Reaper on an episode of VH1's Behind the Music. Will Ferrell wrote the sketch and played Gene Frenkle, an overweight cowbell player. Legendary producer Bruce Dickinson, played by Christopher Walken, asked Frenkle to really explore the studio space and up the ante on his cowbell playing.
The rest of the band are visibly annoyed by Frenkle, but Dickinson tells everyone, I got a fever, and the only prescription--is more cowbell! Buck Dharma thought the sketch was fantastic and said he never tired of it.

The awe-inspiring Finnish metallic psychedelicists Oranssi Pazuzu and their Tampere cohorts Dark Buddha Rising, known for their grandiose slug-paced ritualist doom metal, have recorded a new album, which will be released on Svart Records on April 5th, 2019. The amalgam of these two entities is melted as one on Syntheosis, to be released under the moniker Waste of Space Orchestra.

Syntheosis began as a commissioned piece for Roadburn Festival. The fest, which began as a small-scale gathering of stoner rock addicts has evolved over the years into a four-day celebration of heavy music in all of its possible forms and interpretations, from riff-worship to punishing soundscapes and beyond. The list of Roadburn performers over the years is a veritable who’s who of underground heavy culture, with everyone from Neurosis and Sleepto Godflesh having performed at the event.

Syntheosis the commissioned piece was prepared at the request of the festival and performed there in April 2018 in front of over 3000 people. Syntheosis the album is not a live recording but a carefully prepared studio interpretation, on which the ten musicians worked over the spring and summer of 2018. The album was recorded and mixed by Julius Mauranen, who also worked on Oranssi Pazuzu’s Värähtelijä. The album can be digested as a challenging, engaging psych metal record or as a dimension-spanning one-hour performance consisting of nine parts. The work recounts a story of three beings and their deep search for knowledge.

The Shaman (Vesa Ajomo) is seeing oppressing visions from the bleak future of mankind.

The Seeker (Juho Vanhanen) is searching for the truth from unknown dimensions with secret methods.

The Possessor (Marko Neuman) corrupts the other individuals, manipulating them into his own sinister plan

A ceremony ends up in the opening of a portal, which sucks the three beings into an alien dimension, which is populated by brain-mutilating colour storms and ego-diminishing audio violence. Eventually the three are forced to reach equilibrium and melt their minds into one collective consciousness.

    Waste of Space Orchestra is:

Vesa Ajomo – voice of the shaman, guitar
    Toni Hietamäki – bass guitar
    Niko Lehdontie – guitar, effects
    Ville Leppilahti – keyboards, effects
Marko Neuman – voice of the possessor
    Jukka Rämänen – drums
Petri Rämänen – deep bass guitar
    Jussi Saarivuori – electronics
    Jarkko Salo – drums
Juho Vanhanen – voice of the seeker, guitar
