You have to look far as a composer. Do you accept the first good-looking deal coming to your way and sell your rights or do you take the long route and become a composer, being one in control of your own songs. Learning how to make your own business and figuring out the best way to keep in control go hand in hand, but more often times creative individuals are better at making rather than managing and organizing. When you have a steady income you can focus more on creating the art, but if you sell your intellectual property, you cannot any-longer control where your own music goes.

It is almost impossible to be in control of everything, but it is good to strive for perfection and ask how to be in control. Its not only you that you have to keep control of, but also controlling your own works and where you wish them to go. That is why you should be in control.

Let's face it... Composers are loners and rivals. Here in composer thoughts we discuss how composers are more often times than not source of their own misery.

This is why I stopped uploading my music to SoundCloud. For Composers Soundcloud is dead and not worth to be a music distribution platform. Composers should not upload their music to SoundCloud as it does not anymore help you to get into music opportuneties.

What does it mean to be a composer? How do you become a composer? How do you get commissions? How do you make a living? What's it like being a composer?

Jonathan Bricker's work has uncoved a scientifically sound approach to behavior change that is twice as effective as most currently practiced methods.

Beautiful Vocal Classical song, collaboration between composers, singers and poet. Beautiful traditional instrumental music taking elements from Celtic music tradition.

  • Spirals in Music

In this video I look at Spirals and Circles in music. Are they things you can really hear? I think so, and I give a bunch of different examples where I think they are very audible, from The Nine Inch Nails album 'The Downward Spiral' through to Sibelius's 5th Symphony. I also look at circles in traditional 'rounds', Finnish folk music, and (contraversially) in John Coltrane's Spiral! Finally I look at Andrew Norman's recent orchestral piece 'Spiral'.

  • My own compositions, 15.8.2010

    4:08

My 2nd composition of the year 2010. I am 16 years old boy from Alajärvi, Finland, and I started playing piano when i was 12 years old. I play guitar, too. Everyday guitar playing I started 1.12.2010. Most of my compositions are totally improvisation. This is too. I have absolute/perfect pitch. My first composition is from november 2006. In 2007 i composed much, and 2010-2011 too. And i will surely compose much more! In my opinion, Chopin, Bach, Beethoven, Sibelius, Mozart, Schubert, Mendelssohn, Händel, Liszt, Saint-Saens, Strauss, Tchaikovsky, Grieg and Simo Virtanen are My list of Good composers :)

  • NIGHTWISH - White Night Fantasy

    4:14

Once is the fifth studio album by Finnish symphonic metal band Nightwish (from Kitee, Finland, formed in 1996) and released on 7 June 2004. It is the last album to feature Tarja Turunen on lead vocals. The album cost nearly €250,000 to make, (1,000,000 including the videos) which made it Finland's most expensive recording ever until the release of Nightwish's next album, Dark Passion Play, which cost over €500,000 to produce. As of 2013, Once has sold 2.3 million copies worldwide, being Nightwish's most successful album to date.
White Night Fantasy released as a bonus track of Once in United States & Platinum Edition bonus track - originally found on the Nemo single - Jewelcase version. Lyrics written by Tuomas Holopainen and music composed by Holopainen.
During the first week of its release, Once entered the German, Finnish, Norwegian and Greek charts as number one, selling over 80,000 copies in Germany alone. It was also the first Nightwish album to chart in the U.S., reaching No. 42 on the Billboard Top Heatseekers chart and the band's first album to chart in UK, reaching No. 8 on the Rock Chart. In 2005, Once was ranked number 383 in Rock Hard magazine's book of The 500 Greatest Rock & Metal Albums of All Time. In 2017, it was ranked 89th at Rolling Stone's 100 Greatest Metal Albums of All Time. Once has sold triple platinum in Finland, platinum in Germany, gold in Sweden and later reached No. 1 also in the European Top 100 Albums chart. The single Nemo topped the charts in Finland[30] and Hungary, and reached the top ten in four additional countries. It remained in the UK Rock Chart for more than a year. Nemo therefore remains their most successful single ever, and Once had reached number 47 in the list of best-selling albums of all time in Finland. The total sales of the album have achieved 2.3 million copies in 2013.
The angel on the album cover is a view of the Angel of Grief, a sculpture by William Wetmore Story. The original is in the Protestant Cemetery of Rome, Italy. The statue shows an angel crying on the tomb of Story's wife; after his death, Story was buried under the same statue, close to his wife.

    White Night Fantasy

Enchantress came to me and said:
Meet me at the lake... tonight

I hummed this song to the white
Through the shroud of snow I saw
    Paradise..
    Peace.. No more lies..

    Crestfallen soul
    Rest for this night
    Love is here
    Right here under my wings

I dream of wolves with them I run
For me she lengthened the night
    I am home
    I am in peace

    Crestfallen soul
    Rest for this night
    Love is here
    Right here under my wings

Για εμένα εκείνη μεγάλωσε τη νύχτα
    Είμαι σπίτι

  • Johan Helmich Roman - Assaggio No. 1 BeRI 301 for violin solo

    13:55

Johan Helmich Roman (26 October 1694 – 20 November 1758) was a Swedish Baroque composer. He has been called the father of Swedish music or the Swedish Handel. He was the leader of Swedish Opera through most of Swedish Opera's Age of Liberty.

    From Assagi for violin solo

    No. 1 in A Major

    Jaap Schroder, violin

Roman was born in Stockholm into the family of Johan Roman, a member of the Swedish royal chapel. The family name Roman may be derived from the Finnish place name Rauma, since Johan's ancestors lived in Finland. The boy probably received his first music lessons from his father. He joined the royal chapel in 1711 as violinist and oboist. Around 1715 the King granted Roman permission to study abroad, and the young composer spent some six years in London. He almost certainly studied under Johann Christoph Pepusch, met Francesco Geminiani, Giovanni Bononcini, and, most importantly, George Frideric Handel, whose music made a lasting impression on Roman.

Roman returned to Sweden in 1721. He was soon appointed deputy master of the royal chapel, and six years later he became Chief Master of the Swedish Royal Orchestra. Roman's life during the 1720s was full of organisational activity which led to much improved standards at the chapel, and, in 1731, the first public concerts in Sweden. Roman's only work published during his lifetime, a collection of 12 sonatas for flute, violone and harpsichord, appeared in 1727. In 1730 Roman married, but his wife died just four years later. In 1734 the composer left Sweden to visit several European countries—Austria, England, France, Germany, and Italy. He returned to Stockholm in 1737, bringing back a wealth of music by various composers for the royal chapel to perform. In 1738 Roman married again. In 1740 he was elected a member of the newly established Royal Academy of Sciences.

Roman's successful career took a turn for the worse in early 1740s. The composer's greatest patron, Queen Ulrika Eleonora of Sweden, died in late 1741. In 1742 Roman's activity was greatly hindered by health problems. In 1744 Roman composed one of his finest works, Drottningholmsmusique: a large orchestral suite for the wedding of the Crown Prince Adolf Frederick of Sweden and Louisa Ulrika of Prussia. Ironically, it was due to Adolf Frederick's and Louisa Ulrika's efforts that Roman's career suffered. The new crown princess had different tastes in music, and her husband set up a very strong competing chapel. Finally, Roman's second wife Maria Elisabeth Baumgardt died in 1744, leaving the composer with five children.

In 1745 Roman retired from his post as leader of the royal chapel due to deafness, which had progressed rapidly during the previous years. He settled in the parish of Ryssby, on the estate Lilla Haraldsmåla, near the city of Kalmar in south-east Sweden. Apart from a single visit to Stockholm in 1751–52 to direct the funeral and coronation music on the accession of Adolph Frederik, Roman's last years were dedicated to translating European theoretical treatises into Swedish, and adaptation of sacred texts into Swedish language. He died at Haraldsmåla in 1758. His work has never been forgotten, for already nine years after his death the Royal Academy of Sciences held a commemorative ceremony, where Roman's achievements were documented; copies of Roman's works are found in manuscripts from as late as 1810.

  • Erkki Melartin // Solitude

    5:23

Surullinen Puutarha [The Melancholy Garden] (1908) // V - Solitude
Composed by Erkki Melartin (1875-1937) // Performed by Thomas Little (b. 1996)

First Moravian Church // Greensboro, NC // February 8th, 2015

Erkki Melartin was a talented Finnish composer who belonged to the circle of composers whose careers were almost entirely overshadowed by that of Jean Sibelius. This may be due, at least in part, to the fact that, like Sibelius, Melartin primarily wrote for the symphony orchestra, but was not able to get any of his symphonies published except for his Sixth (out of a planned nine), which turned out to be his final essay in the medium. His opera Aino and a Violin Concerto are among the nearly 1,000 works in his underperformed oeuvre.

The Melancholy Garden, Melartin's Op. 52, is perhaps most indicative of the composer's style. As a pianist, his music for the instrument is expressive and idiomatic; the five pieces in The Melancholy Garden contain great lyricism. Dedicated to Jean Sibelius, who wrote Melartin a letter praising his apt expression for solitude, the suite was originally planned for the orchestra, as evidenced by the widely spaced chords and the proliferation of recitativo markings.

The score to The Melancholy Garden can be found on IMSLP:

    Preface

Lauri Toivio's Suite for Flute and String Orchestra Op. 13 contains some of the more tonal approach among its composer's list of works. With all its challenges the Suite is intended for young players. The first movement Kimpale (Nugget) was written already in 2003 for flute and wind band, for the National Wind Festival of Lahti, Finland. Immediately after the premiere other Finnish words ending with -ale crossed in Toivio's mind and he started thinking what kind of music they could be. As a result, he decided to write co-movements for Nugget later.

The co-operation of The Finnish Flute Association and the Jalasjärvi Music Institute, started in 2007, lead to a project of searching, commissioning and recording Finnish music for flute and strings, especially for young players. This provided a possibility to turn Toivio's ideas into music. He started working on the Suite in the beginning of 2008, by arranging the original wind score of Nugget for strings. Later in the spring, he continued by composing three other movements and finished the Suite in autumn with the fifth, final movement.

The Suite begins with light and cozy atmosphere of Nugget, technically the easiest among the five movements. Flake has a much more complex polyphony and alternating measurements, and the movement also contains several solo string parts in the spirit of chamber music, without loosing its wintry lightness. The coarse Scumbag is technically the most challenging movement of the suite, demanding e.g. flutter tongue technique. The movement's music is based on alternating minor thirds and parallel minor triads.

The longest and musically the most versatile movement of the Suite is Strip. After beginning, the simple folkloric tune of the flute is joined by an accompaniment, a figure that gradually rises into a role of great importance among the movement's thematic material. The Suite ends with the jubilantly marching Whopper, containing a solo cadenza in which the flutist briefly quotes Henry Mancini's Pink Panther theme and subsequently gets to show his/her capabilities in the art of playing trumpet. A joyous passage concludes the piece with reminiscence of the flute melody in Nugget.

Music in the world is a gift. Music can potentially make us get into the flow of our thoughts and stream of emotions. Music in the end tells a story, and it depends whether that song reflects you the best way imaginable. This idea made Gift of Notes from the beginning, and once that was together, we began creating this beautiful instrumental original song - Gift of the Notes.

The project started from a beautiful and deep poem made by Susan Nottingham. From that I gathered a team of Trivo Marjanovic, Milana Zilnik and Datowda to create together the best classical vocal composition with traditional roots. Piano, bass guitar and bells with wonderful singing by Milana Zilnik makes Gift of Notes to be a beautiful classical composition.

  • The Lady of the Cold | Inspired by MOOMIN

    3:17

Breathtaking woman vocals in a song inspired by Japanese-made Moomin Series! Beautiful moomin music!
    (Read more in the Description)

    ► DOWNLOAD FROM BANDCAMP:

    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It is based on the Moomin series (Moomin Ikka) antagonistic force called Ice Lady. She appeared only in one episode, but her haunting woman voice did a big impression to viewers and haunted nightmares of many children. She only came to Moomin Valley at winter.

Moomin winter came. Here is the Scene where she appears in the anime:

Instead of action packed music, what you only hear is this haunting beautiful voice. For me this embodies the winter; beautiful, yet so treacherous. Moomin music in this scene was cold yet full of northern beauty.

This original song has a touching woman voice singing in northern way to imitate folk music singed by generations of people. Like music from a winter fantasy. Inspiring strings and other orchestral instruments have been added, such as oboe and flute. They sound magical with impressive singing. The lady of the cold is most beautiful piece of moomin music out there.

    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Lady of the Cold, also known as The Great Cold (Swedish: Isfrun or Den stora kölden, Finnish: Jäärouva) is a supernatural being appearing in Moominvalley in Moominland Midwinter. The Lady of the Cold is in many ways cold and winter anthropomorphized, having a mysterious and almost godlike presence. Every winter, she passes through Moominvalley, bringing icy cold temperatures with her. Her appearance is described as very beautiful, but if she looks someone in the eye, that person will instantly freeze to death. Making her similiar to mythological creatures such as sirens[1]. It is as such very important to stay indoors and keep warm the night she arrives.

Symphony No.13 Artist Malevich was recorded in Vilnius (Lithuania) 16-20 of June 2014. Performers: Lithuanian State Symphony Orchestra, conductor Professor Imants Resnis (Latvia),sound-ingeneer Laura Jurgelionyte.

The score of Symphony No. 13 was completed on January 6, 2014.

    List of compositions:

Fridrich Bruk was born on September 18th, 1937 in Kharkov, the Ukraine. After the tragic loss of his mother in 1943, Bruk was raised by his grandparents. He graduated from the Special Music School for Gifted Children (Kharkov) in 1956 with a silver medal, and then proceeded to study composition with V. Voloshinov and B. Arapov at the Leningrad Rimsky-Korsakov State Conservatory. He resided and worked in Karelia for several years, then Leningrad, heading the department of music in Lennauchfilm studio. He has resided in Tampere, Finland with his wife Nadezhda and son Alexander since 1974.

His compositional output is diverse; in general, Bruk has written chamber music, popular songs, instrumental and piano works for young musicians, music for theatre and movies, operas, oratorio, orchestral works, choral works, piano repertoire, and symphonies. Of his piano works, 5 Variations for Piano on a Karelian Melody Mansikka-Strawberry (1980) is a favorite and often performed in concert. Perhaps one could consider the symphony to be his current passion; Bruk has just completed his fourteenth symphony – based on the famous painting by Norwegian artist Edvard Munch, “The Scream” – which will be recorded this summer. His symphonies are all programmatic and frequently incorporate Jewish, Russian, or Finnish folk topics and folk music or original music in a folk style. An article on this subject titled The Symphonic Universe of Fridrich Bruk: Programmatic Narratives and Jewish Folk Influences in Symphonies 3,10, and 11 is scheduled to appear in The Musical Times by late 2017.

Bruk has received several notable awards, including the Cross of Merit of the Order of the Lion of Finland (1988), the artists’ supplementary pension of the Finnish State (1998), and a Grand Medal of Tampere-city (2007). He is also a member of the Society of the Finnish Composers, the Guild of Light Music Composers and Authors ELVIS.

  • NIGHTWISH - Crimson Tide / Deep Blue Sea HD,HQ Sound

    3:30

It's July, 1996. A hidden campfire looms on the island in the middle of Lake Pyhajarvi, Kitee. Then at midnight, something happens that has far-reaching consequences. Tuomas has an idea of a solo project that would play atmospheric mood music.
The idea quickly crystallises: the sound would include acoustic guitars, flutes, strings, piano — and female vocals. Guitarist Erno Emppu Vuorinen and vocalist Tarja Turunen soon join the project.Nightwish was born..

From Wishes to Eternity - Live is a live DVD/VHS/CD by Finnish symphonic metal band Nightwish. It was recorded in Tampere, Finland on 29 December 2000. The CD was released as a limited edition of 10.000 copies,[2] available only in Finland. In late 2005, Spinefarm managed to release it in Europe. In addition to a show of Nightwish material, the band also performed a medley, Crimson Tide, Deep Blue Sea, which borrowed melodies from many sources, including Hans Zimmer's music in the 1995 film Crimson Tide.

On 1 March 2004 Drakkar released From Wishes to Eternity as SACD, a hybrid disc which can be played on normal CD players while SACD players give higher fidelity.[2] The instrumental song Crimson Tide, Deep Blue Sea and FantasMic had to be removed from the track list to fit the concert on the disc. Later in 2004, the SACD version won the Gold Disc in Finland with more than 20,000 copies sold.

  • Great American Hit 1931: When Your Lover Has Gone - Roy Carroll

    3:19

Roy Carroll & His Sands Point Orchestra (Ben Selvin’s Orchestra), Vocal chorus by Roy Carroll (uncredited singer) – When Your Lover Has Gone, Fox Trot (E.A.Swan), Velvet Tone 1931 (USA)

NOTE: This outstanding tune is one of those rare cases, when immediately after presenting in public for the first time, and when its last notes have resounded, everyone in the audience is sure, that just participated in the birth of immortal standard. Nobody knows what decides about one tune becoming at once a standard and another one – albeit equally beautiful not less appealing – does not. As sages say, perhaps it has something to do with the magic. Perhaps one composer makes a pact with devil another does not – therefore in one case the magic trick is used, while in the other – not. So it happens in “When Your Lover…” – where a long story and all of the pain of the lovers’ parting is transferred in an abbreviated musical period: after the simple verse, in merely 32-bars of the refrain.

After being featured in James Cagney’s movie “Blonde Crazy” in 1931, this song has at once been included on the list of evergreen “Songs of the Songs” of all the lovers of the world: so the bygone ones, as those yet to come. It was composed by the Finnish-American composer, bandleader and multi-instrumentalist Einar Aaron Swan. Born in Massachusetts from the Finnish parents, Swan started playing on alto-saxophone in 1924 in the renowned Sam Lanin’s Roseland Ballroom Orchestra, with such front-line American pop- and jazz-musicians as Red Nichols, Vic Berton and met Fletcher Henderson, for whom he started writing arrangements. In 1925 he switched to Vincent Lopez’ band, with which he traveled in Europe and where he had a chance to play with Mike Mosiello and Xavier Cugat. In 1930, Swan gave up active dance band playing and concentrated on writing arrangements for the radio programs and for bandleaders such as Eddie Cantor and Dave Rubinoff. His greatest hit “When Your Lover Has Gone” immediately put his name among the best American pop-composers of his time, especially when the song became a golden number of all ballroom orchestras of the world and was included into repertoire of top stage performers, such as Louis Armstrong, Ethel Waters, Billie Holiday or Lee Wiley. In 1939 Swann composed another awesome tune In the Middle of the Dream, which was successfully presented by Tommy Dorsey and recorded by Glen Miller’s orchestra, yet shortly thereafter the rising star of the young composer suddenly fell down from his sky and he died of cerebral haemorrhage in New York in the age of 37.

The Roy Carrol’s orchestra is one of Ben Selvin’s label names, and so is the singer’s pseudonym. The voice sounds very familiar to me, yet at the moment I can’t say, who he is.

  • The Lost Boys by Seth Buckingham

    1:41

This spring, I was provided the utmost pleasure and honor of directing a play at my high school. And, being a composer, this meant that I also had the incredible opportunity to do something that had never been done at my high school: a completely musically accompanied play.

I was not alone in this venture, one of my best friends, the incomparable Tiana Saunders (who incidentally also has a Youtube account and you may find her here: ) and I found a gorgeous, gorgeous, gorgeous script by Jeremy Bloom, called Peter/Wendy. It was a darker look at the old fairytale, with an emphasis on the originals darker themes, and on the relationships built and destroyed between the characters. The concept was to strip the story of all the things that softened the hard blows offered by these iconic characters and their story.

I will say that our show was a magical success all in all, we dazzled our audience, made them laugh, cry (although, I really did most of that), and leave the theatre with a piece of the show. But let’s talk music, specifically. No matter how you look at it, I was faced with the task of adding my take to the long list of composers who had tackled Peter Pan (including musical gods like James Newton Howard and John Williams).

In searching for the music, I kept coming back to the sound of magic. It needed to be ambiguous. This Peter wasn’t necessarily a good guy at all, so his theme should do nothing but generate mystery and wonder. It was a simple set of three notes that answered. Three notes that I have endlessly built off of to create the sonic world of Neverland, the Lost Boys, Tinker Bell, and Pan himself. Flutes made perfect sense, being the air that Peter rides on, with trembling strings and chimes adding the magic to the notes. Peter’s theme picks up on horns from time to time when he soars or fights.

Wendy’s theme was equally as simple, and also full of wonder, but hers ushered the emotions of optimism. Not necessarily hope, but Wendy, and her theme in turn, strive the absolute best that there is despite the tragedy surrounding them, and that bittersweet optimism and euphoria can be found in a simple four notes. Ironic that Peter’s theme asks a question with three notes, and Wendy’s answers it with four, with a full orchestral crescendo at the end that’s to die for!

The final major theme (there’s a Tinker Bell theme and a Hook and Smee theme as well, but those were significantly less important to the score) is the emotional binding of the score, representing the nostalgia attached to Neverland, Peter Pan and the like for the audience, and the nostalgia attached to childhood for Wendy. This theme, while more complex, retains it’s simplicity, relying on humming or plucked strings to make it’s earnest voice heard in most instances. It serves as a love theme for Peter and Wendy, a theme for the happy thoughts we cling to, and a death theme in many points. I wrote it to represent the desire for an eternal childhood, but the loss of it nonetheless, but in the end it took off on it’s own accord.

All in all, the best aspect of this score was it’s cohesiveness. It’s the first time I’ve been allowed as a composer to introduce themes and develop them in a musical journey to their full potential. It’s not a film score, but it listens like one, and I hope you will enjoy it.

ON THE SUBJECT OF USAGE: Please, please, please feel free to use this in your school's/other theatre organization's production of this play or really any play that pertains to Peter Pan. I would love it if you used it! I would only ask that you include my name in your program and tell me when/where you're performing, as I'd love to come see how you use my music if fate is kind.

University of the Arts Helsinki - Sibelius Academy presents:

    1+1 - J-P Piirainen

“1+1 is a concert about how all things have two sides, about balancing at the intersection of two paths. And I am not there alone.”

Guitarist J-P Piirainen, a seasoned solo performer, explores the extension of the solo instrument aesthetic to a variety of duos in his master’s recital. How to combine a solo idiom firmly rooted in folk music with modern guitar music and various combinations of instruments? The works on the programme form a bridge between guitar music and folk music and also explore the territory between the two genres.

Back with you with another Runescape Remastered track from Runescape OST! This melody was one major one that was stuck on my head from my childhood times of playing Runescape. Everyone in my school talked about that game. When one of my friends heard I could play piano, he asked to play the arabian song from the soundtrack. Even in army people bonded with their runescape experiences. Such a lovely game from beginning of 2000s.

I wanted to honor composers of Runescape and players to update this beloved track. I know that some tracks have been remastered already for Runescape 3, and this is why this track might not get that many people to see it, but I have always wanted to remake it. That's why I am making it anyway! Enjoy Runescape Arabian remix.

Newbie Melody greets new player welcome to world of Runescape. Newbie Melody is a music track that was is introduced and played during the Ashdale Tutorial. First starting calmly, then making sudden changes to joy and sadness before initially getting back into echoing harmony.

Even tough I never got into this game that much, I still can say these Runescape melodies have made their mark on me when I was young. In Finland this game was very popular and had a big success. Literally every kid were playing it. Ah, those times...

  • September Swale

    5:33

    September Swale (1993)
    by Beth Anderson
performed by Joseph Kubera 3/25/16 NYC
Ever since a horse named Swale won the Kentucky derby several years ago, the composer has used the word “swale” frequently to describe many of her works. A swale is a meadow or a marsh whose abundant nourishment and moisture support a rich diversity of plant life. Since 1984, Ms. Anderson’s work has been constructed from swatches of newly composed music, rather than found music, which she finds reminiscent of the diversity of life found in a swale. A version of this piece, composed for different instruments, was commissioned and premiered by the University of the Redlands’ New Music Ensemble/Barney Childs. It combines various oriental scales with Satie-like lyricism. • Paraphrase II - Giant steps and eden acid by Sebastian Hilli, performed by New European Ensemble

    21:40

'Paraphrase II - Giant steps and eden acid' by Sebastian Hilli, winner of the Gaudeamus Award 2018, performed by New European Ensemble. Recorded live during Gaudeamus Muziekweek 2018 in TivoliVredenburg, Utrecht, on 9 September 2018.

Watch all the concert videos of the Gaudeamus Muziekweek 2018 here:

Sebastian Hilli, winner the Gaudeamus Award 2018, based his work Paraphrase II on someone else’s music. The Finnish composer chose Giant Steps by saxophonist and improvisor John Coltrane, and uses techniques from the dance genre acid house. “It’s interesting to combine things that are really different and somehow to place them in the same context,” Hilli explains. “I wrote my research thesis about repetition in music, and I also examined the possibility of applying it in my own music. This brought me to acid house, where there is a lot of repetition. At the same time I’m fascinated by long processes in music. The first part of Paraphrase II is based on the free jazz of John Coltrane. This long process, a kind of movement, happens very gradually. It is very subtle but slowly moves in the direction of this acid house material. Towards the end of the piece there’s a more direct reference to this type of music.

Paraphrase II is part of an expanding series, with three works to date. In the first Paraphrase (2015) Hilli adapts the song På verandan vid hafvet by his compatriot Jean Sibelius, based on the poem of the same name by Swedish poet Viktor Rydberg. Hilli wrote the piece on the occasion of Sibelius’ 150th birthday. The third Paraphrase (2016) has as its point of departure Carlo Gesualdo’s O dolorosa gioia.

So, Coltrane and acid house for the second piece from the series. But there is more going on. For Hilli, the music of others is not solely a reference but has a function: It is an important way to deal with issues of a specific style and to reflect on my own music. Firstly, I get to know the material really well. The first sketches are almost transcriptions. Step by step I get closer to my own style, but some of the original material remains. It is an interesting way to reach different elements and to discover something new.” For Hilli the history of music is a treasure chest from which he extracts exquisite jewels. He presents a new reading of the musical past, and when he is finished with that, something emerges which is undeniably his very own creation.

Release is the second album from Elskavon, the ambient moniker of Minneapolis composer Chris Bartels. This collection of songs continues on the path where the late 2012 debut album Movements In Season ended, with large, lush atmospheres and open textures.

Ambient music has always been able to create opportunities for listeners to interpret emotions in a variety of ways, and any one song can mean something so different from one set of ears to the next. For Chris, inspiration for these songs arrives in a similar fashion. It comes from all sorts of angles - love and friendship, hope and doubt, life and death.

Residents of Minnesota know the drastic difference of the four calendar seasons all too well. Summer in the land of 10,000 lakes is overwhelmingly beautiful, while winter is, to say the least, frigid. While certainly bound to be diverse in interpretation, Release was originally inspired by the many Minnesota winters Chris has experienced. It is the first of a double album. A 'spring' version will follow, after a predictably chilled few months.

The album opens with the expansive, airy four-and-a-half minute crescendo titled We Can All Be New. The listener is encouraged to become lost in the grand calm of spacious vocals, guitars, and sampled atmospheres. This leads to an immediate transition with the second track, Small Hands, which was written in anticipation of Chris' and his wife's first child, who will join them in the spring. The simple piano piece is reminiscent of any number of calming neo-classical songs or minimalist film scores.

  • D.Nenov - Four sketches for orchestra - 1 .wmv

    3:51

    No.1 - Vazhdelenie - Aspiration

Dimitar Nenov (1901 — 1953) was a famous Bulgarian composer and pianist, music pegagogue, architect. He was one of the major figures of the second generation of Bulgarian composers. He studied piano privately with A. Stoyanov (1919-1920).
Between 1920 and 1927 he studied architecture at the Technische Hochschule in Dresden, took a doctorate in art history and attended the Dresden Conservatory where he studied the piano with Karl Fehling and theory with Theodor Blumer and Paul Bitner. From 1927 to 1930 he worked in Bulgaria as an architect. After further studies in Zakopane (Poland) with the pianist Egon Petri (Italy, 1931) and receiving a diploma in Bologna (1932) he embarked on a career in music. He was founder and director of the music section at Sofia radio (1935-7), for which he made a number of folk song arrangements, and from 1937 was professor at the State Academy of Music. A co-founder of the Bulgarian Composers Society (1933), in the 1930s he took part in the debate on the Bulgarian national style, and in furtherance of this published several articles.
Nenov was a gifted pianist and interpreter of Beethoven, Liszt and Skryabin. A successor to the Liszt-Busoni-Petri tradition, he developed the contemporary approach towards playing that combined artistry with great technical skill. As a composer, he was an outstanding representative of the Bulgarian school. The originality of his work is apparent in miniatures as well as the symphonic works, which contain complex musical ideas and an impressive dramatic quality. The Romantic expression and moments of ecstasy, for example in Vazhdeleniye (Aspiration) and Kopnezh (Desire), betray the influence of Skryabin. An integral style is reached in works which draw on the melodic and rhythmic characteristics of archaic Bulgarian folk music. In the symphonic works, the folk influence is evident in the way melodies are constructed; in the use of variation as a principle of development; and in his choice of modes, many of which are symmetrically formed and bear resemblance to the octatonic scale. His rich, sumptuous musical language relies on a functional type of harmony based on modes, while his masterful orchestrations frequently call for large wind sections and a number of unusual percussion instruments. His greatest achievements are the Piano Concerto and Rapsodichna fantazia.

  • Duos for violin and double bass | Elina Vähälä & Niek de Groot

    2:47

Dialogue of extremes: violin and double bass. Compositions with astonishing colours: intensive, new, touchingly beautiful

For this recording, Finnish violinist Elina Vähälä and Dutch double bass player Niek de Groot have chosen and performed seven pieces, composed by six Europeans and one Korean. When a violin and a double bass come together, two sound spheres collide: particularly in recent times, many renowned composers have been inspired to create highly original realisations of such encounters.

When a violin and a double bass perform chamber music together, it is a case of two instruments encountering each other when normally they are poles apart and play together only alongside additional parts and colours. This is where the composers who have come forward for this adventure of a violin and double bass duo link in: should contrasts be accentuated, or should the two parts be united to form one “super-instrument”, as Erkki-Sven Tüür had in mind? Should the two instruments be protagonists in a “narrative”, or do they appear as representatives of fundamental principles of human nature – as in the yin and yang, as drawn upon by the Korean composer Isang Yun? Whichever path is chosen, pairing the violin and the double bass is so fascinating that even busy composers such as Krzysztof Penderecki and Wolfgang Rihm have written magnificent and highly individual pieces for this combination.

Violinist Elina Vähälä is one of the most sought-after instrumentalists in the international music scene. She made her debut with an orchestra at the age of twelve with Sinfonia Lahti and was later chosen as Sinfonia Lahti’s “Young Master Soloist”. In 1999 she won the Young Concert Artists International Auditions in New York. Elina Vähälä appears regularly with leading orchestras in Finland, Europe and the US. Concert tours have taken her to the UK, Finland, Germany, China, Korea, Japan, as well as to South America. Besides her solo career she is also a devoted chamber musician. Her repertoire ranges from baroque to contemporary. Elina Vähälä is a professor of violin at the Hochschule für Musik in Karlsruhe.

Dutch double bassist Niek de Groot is one of today’s leading soloists. Originally a trumpeter, he started playing the double bass at the age of eighteen. Within an unusually short time he became principal bass with several European ensembles, including a ten-year tenure as first solo bass with the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra. Since 2006 Niek de Groot has dedicated himself entirely to chamber music and solo performances. He performs regularly as a soloist and chamber musician at the great international concert halls and music festivals. His repertoire includes a wide range of contemporary music. In 1996 he was appointed Senior Professor for Double Bass at the Folkwang Universität der Künste in Essen.

Erkki Melartin (7 February 1875, Käkisalmi – 14 February 1937, Pukinmäki) was a Finnish composer. He was one of Finland's leading composers, and primarily known for his symphonies. He has also been unfairly dismissed as a salon composer for his numerous light-hearted miniatures. Unfortunately, he was largely over-shadowed by his much more famous compatriot Jean Sibelius.

The Valse Sentimentale comes from a set of lyric pieces, dedicated to his Danish friend Nanni Jarl. It is a sad, brooding waltz, with a brief light-hearted sardonic interlude. The melody sings plaintively over a mysterious sounding bass.

  • T. Tolkki /Sharon den Adel - Are You The One?

    5:09

Timo Tapio Tolkki (born 3 March 1966) is a Finnish musician best known as the former guitarist, songwriter and producer of the power metal band Stratovarius. With his tenure lasting for more than twenty years, he was the longest standing member of the band before his departure in 2008. After leaving Stratovarius he formed two supergroups named Revolution Renaissance and Symfonia, both of which have since disbanded. In a 2011 article by Guitar World magazine, Tolkki was included in the all-time top 50 list of fastest guitar players in the world.

Sharon Janny den Adel (born 12 July 1974) is a Dutch singer, songwriter and fashion designer, best known as the lead vocalist and one of the main songwriters in the Dutch symphonic metal band Within Temptation. She has been a performing musician since the age of 14, and is a founding member of Within Temptation, along with Robert Westerholt, in 1996.

Hymn to Life is the second solo album by Timo Tolkki. Unlike the first one, Classical Variations and Themes, Hymn to Life does not present Tolkki as a fast and classical heavy metal guitarist, but as a diverse songwriter. The album deals with Tolkki's personal beliefs and thoughts about life and encourages the listener to believe in him/herself. Despite some song names, Tolkki uses strong criticism against religions. Musically the album is for most parts anything but metal. Tolkki added a lot of different influences; pop, rock and classical. Perhaps due to its very non-Stratovarius style, the album did not have a very cheerful welcome from the metal audience. On the other hand, the album was never meant to be metal, but a solo album free of the style of Stratovarius.
Guest vocal appearances on the album are Michael Kiske on the track Key to the Universe and Sharon den Adel on Are You the One?. The track Hymn to Life includes a speech of Charlie Chaplin from the movie The Great Dictator.

    Lyrics:
    Are you the one?
The traveller in time who has come
To heal my wounds to lead me to the sun
To walk this path with me until the end of time

    Are you the one?
Who sparkles in the night like fireflies
    Eternity of evening sky
Facing the morning eye to eye

    Are you the one?
Who'd share this life with me
Who'd dive into the sea with me
    Are you the one?
    Who's had enough of pain
And doesn't wish to feel the shame, anymore

    Are you the one?

    Are you the one?
Who's love is like a flower that needs rain
To wash away the feeling of pain
Which sometimes can lead to the chain of fear
    Are you the one?

To walk with me in garden of stars
The universe, the galaxies and Mars
The supernova of our love is true

    Are you the one?
Who'd share this life with me
Who'd dive into the sea with me
    Are you the one?
    Who's had enough of pain
And doesn't wish to feel the shame, anymore
    Are you the one?

    Are you the one?
Who'd share this life with me
Who'd dive into the sea with me
    Are you the one?
    Who's had enough of pain
And doesn't wish to feel the shame, anymore

  • GNATTALI Sonata for Cello and Guitar

    11:03

Radamés Gnattali : Sonata for Cello and Guitar
    Chen Cao, cello
    Xiaobo Pu, guitar

Performed on Friday, October 27, 2017
Field Concert Hall, Curtis Institute of Music, Philadelphia

Radamés Gnattali is recognized as one of the great Brazilian composers of the 20th century. In addition to his considerable output for orchestra and chamber ensembles, Gnattali worked for many years as an arranger, composer, and conductor for Brazilian radio and television. His Sonata for Cello and Guitar, composed in 1969, demonstrates his fluency in both popular and learned idioms—a common feature of South American musical culture that one also finds in the nuevo tango of the Argentinian composer Astor Piazzolla. In this work Gnattali highlights the gorgeous interplay of a pair of instruments all too rarely heard together. The piece is in three movements—allegro comodo, adagio, and con spirito—with the outer movements (and especially the last) unmistakably driven by dance rhythms.

Glazunov - The Sea (more) fantasy orchestra in E major, Op. 28 - Alexander Konstantinovich Glazunov (10 August 1865 -- 21 March 1936) was a Russian composer of the late Russian Romantic period, music teacher and conductor. He served as director of the Saint Petersburg Conservatory between 1905 and 1928 and was also instrumental in the reorganization of the institute into the Petrograd Conservatory, then the Leningrad Conservatory, following the Bolshevik Revolution. He continued heading the Conservatory until 1930, though he had left the Soviet Union in 1928 and did not return. The best known student under his tenure during the early Soviet years was Dmitri Shostakovich.
Glazunov was significant in that he successfully reconciled nationalism and cosmopolitanism in Russian music. While he was the direct successor to Balakirev's nationalism, he tended more towards Borodin's epic grandeur while absorbing a number of other influences. These included Rimsky-Korsakov's orchestral virtuosity, Tchaikovsky's lyricism and Taneyev's contrapuntal skill. His weaknesses were a streak of academicism which sometimes overpowered his inspiration and an eclecticism which could sap the ultimate stamp of originality from his music.[citation needed] Younger composers such as Prokofiev and Shostakovich eventually considered his music old-fashioned while also admitting he remained a composer with an imposing reputation and a stabilizing influence in a time of transition and turmoil

    About Best Classical Music:

    Hi!
I’m Andrei, a fan of classical music. One day, I asked my friends if they knew about Felix Mendelssohn, a very popular composer, but no one of them had never heard his name. Today, people listen to multiple types of music, but only some listen to masterpieces of classical music. When I say masterpiece, I don’t mean Beethoven or Mozart, but hundreds of composers that the world has forgotten about. I find sad that nobody knows about them, so I decided to use YouTube to teach and inform people about these beautiful masterpieces that are waiting for someone to listen to them. Every day, I publish a new video centered around one of them, with a little explanation, and the masterpiece itself, because I think everybody deserves to know and enjoy classical masterpieces.

A new space instrumental song, Corona, made by Elias Luukkanen. Corona is an aura of plasma that surrounds the Sun and other stars. Sun is the only lightsource keeping us alive here on the surface of the earth, and having an original space song for it is very proper, especially in the ominous tone its created in. Outer Space is the most hostile place for a human being you can find, so making it gentle, slowly growing and with dark tone underneath makes the song enjoyable to listen.
