  • Happy Birthday in the Styles of 10 Classical Composers

    18:27

During the past 2 years, I've covered these 10 classical composers in my How to Sound Like series. Each episode was uploaded on or around the composers' birthdays, and I dissected the characteristics of their music to construct versions of Happy Birthday in their styles. This is a fun, celebratory, and educational exercise, and in no way am I claiming that the authenticity of these versions is anything more than sincere attempts at trying to understand the intricacies of each composer. Please keep that in mind, and enjoy!

    Lyrics:

I close my eyes only for a moment, and the moment's gone
All my dreams pass before my eyes, a curiosity

Dust in the wind, all they are is dust in the wind

Same old song, just a drop of water in an endless sea
All we do crumbles to the ground, though we refuse to see

Dust in the wind, all we are is dust in the wind

Now, don't hang on, nothing lasts forever but the earth and sky
It slips away, and all your money won't another minute buy

Dust in the wind, all we are is dust in the wind (all we are is dust in the wind)
Dust in the wind (everything is dust in the wind), everything is dust in the wind (the wind)

  • Bach - Violin Partita No. 2 in D minor BWV 1004 - Sato | Netherlands Bach Society

    29:22

‘Sei solo’… you’re on your own? In the days before ‘AutoCorrect’, spelling was mainly a question of feeling, especially in another language. But what if Bach deliberately did not write ‘Sei soli’ above his six violin solos? What if he wanted to warn his soloist before sending them out on stage armed only with a bow, four strings and a few of his most difficult pieces in his head?

  • Clout - Substitute • TopPop

    3:24

Clout was an original all-female South African rock group formed in Johannesburg in 1977, best known for their hit single, Substitute.

Clout's first and biggest hit, Substitute, was a new arrangement of a Righteous Brothers song, composed by Willie Wilson. In 1978, their version reached No. 1 in South Africa, New Zealand, Germany, France, the Netherlands, Sweden, Austria, Denmark and Belgium. It also reached No. 2 on the UK Singles Chart and remained in the UK charts for 15 weeks. Due to sanctions against South African artists and performers by UK's Equity at the time, the BBC's Top of the Pops TV programme used the group's performance of the song on the Dutch TV programme TopPop from 8 April 1978 to present the hit song for its top ten countdown.

A major success in Europe, Clout scored more Top 10 singles, notably Save Me, You've Got All of Me and Under Fire.

  • Rembrandt! Part 1/3

    2:52

    Rembrandt! [Part 1/3]
    Alon Sariel, Concerto Foscari
    Pre-order now:
This album will be released on April 17, 2019.

Music in this video: Emanuel Adriaenssen – Canson Englesa & Altra Canson Englesa
This track is already available on iTunes, Amazon & Google Play.

This album is Alon Sariel’s personal hommage to Rembrandt van Rijn – the world of arts is celebrating the 350th anniversary of the death of the great painter in 2019. As a lute player, the Dutch Golden Age has drawn Alon Sariel’s attention for a while now. Perhaps because these musical pearls are hardly ever played and certainly are not regarded within what became standard repertoire for the instrument. A large part of this project was originally lute music, as the lute was without doubt the most popular instrument in the Dutch Golden Age. We see that in the paintings: Around twenty-five per cent of musical paintings show a lute.

Sariel did however add a few instruments into this project, instruments which were as well very common in the Dutch Golden Age, like different viols and recorders. Through the arrangements to be found on this album, this lute music becomes even more colorful. There’s also quite some amount of free improvisation in Sariel’s arrangements, as improvisation was a very important element in the music of the time, and also today’s musicians follow their own imagination driven by Rembrandt’s paintings.

While rehearsing and recording this music with Concerto Foscari, the musicians often spoke about colors, trying to get a darker or brighter sound etc., that’s when they noticed that a lot of the musical terminology actually comes from the visual world, from paintings.

The moment where painters try to visualize music could therefore be a very fascinating one. As if they try to “freeze” music into something eternal, which has a longer life than simply a chord on the lute. What Alon Sariel aimed to do in this album is to “de-frost” those moments and, above all, to create the “soundtrack” of the Dutch Golden Age.

Two of the pieces are recorded for the very first time on this CD: Louys de Moy’s “L’Italiana & Spagnolet” and the Allemande by Constantijn Huygens.

  • Historical Metronome Use Still Described in 1932!

    10:17

The possible way the majority of 19th century composers could have used their metronome (if you want it or not) is the WBMP - Whole Beat Metronome Practice. In this way, the metronome ticks indicate the subdivision of the note value in the MMs, like one AND two AND, ... don't take my word for it... at least if you can see someone play in speeds that will go way above 20 notes per second. And not in a few cases. Want to know more? Click here:
All of this shouldn't be even a 'debate' anymore, but I assume logic only matters in a world that makes sense.
Here is a source from 1932, one of the most known musical encyclopedia of The Netherlands, clearly describing the whole beat principle. A misprint? Don't know about that. This work was not a one-man undertaking as you will see in this video. For sure? Don't know either. Check it out for yourself I'd say. That the whole beat principle was clearly still there early 20 century, we see with composers like Ravel, Sibelius and others, or very specifically with Max Reger ( but we should be willing to acknowledge that this source, in the case it is a whole beat source, for sure is an outliner.

Would you like to see another master work from J.S. Bach, played by Willem van Twillert?
J.S. Bach, Toccata and Fugue in d [BWV565] NABER-organ, Amersfoort:

WILLEM VAN TWILLERThas composed many Psalm and Chorale arrangements, the earliest of which was influenced by his studies of 18th-century German organ literature. These have been printed in the Netherlands, and have also been issued on CD. Since 2006 he has also composed for orchestra, and for various ensembles including choir while studying composition with Henk Alkema.

As an organist he has become a well-known performing musician both at home and abroad, thanks mainly to his concerts in the Netherlands, as well as in the U.S.A., Italy (including, in 1996, a concert for the Academia di Musica Italiana per Organo in Pistoia), Germany and England. In 1991 van Twillert was invited by the American Guild of Organists to act as a jury member for the regional competition for young professional organists in Ohio, where he also gave a lecture about the history of Dutch psalm singing at the Calvin College in Sioux-center.

Van Twillert is also known internationally for his recordings of little-known organ literature through his series of CDs, MUSICQ VOOR HET ORGEL. Willem van Twillert has edited music for various Dutch music publishers. For information about his latest series, LITERATA, begun in 2006, please email info@muziekhandel-boeijenga.nl As an editor, his most extensive project to date has been the series of 15 volumes entitled ORGANIST COMPOSERS of the 18th and 19th CENTURIES. For information regarding this series, please email info@emcmusic.nl . In Germany his Toccata ‚Thine be the Glory' in Romantic Style, is published by Dr. J. Butz, music publishers, Sankt Augustin. Email@butz-verlag.de

Willem van Twillert taught organ at the municipal academy of music in Zwolle between 1980 and 1988. As a church organist, he has, since his appointment following a competition in 1979, accompanied the services of three co-operating churches in Amersfoort. The organ lovers of the Netherlands also know him as one of the editors of the monthly magazine de Orgelvriend (the Organ Friend), a function he fulfilled between 1985 and 2006. From 1976 until 2003 van Twillert was the owner and director of a private music school in Bunschoten, and, in 2004 he was invited to give a masterclass at the music academy of Sarajevo (Bosnia) on behalf of the Alkmaar foundation, Musicians without Borders.

Willem van Twillert's performances have been featured in several Dutch radio series,

WILLEM VAN TWILLERT (1952) studied organ at the Sweelinck Conservatory in Amsterdam with Piet Kee as his Organ professor, with whom he also studied improvisation and composition. In 1975 he began 3 years of orchestral conducting studies with Anton Kersjes. In 1976 he obtained the diploma for Church Music and in 1978 the diploma of Performing Musician cum laude, with a teaching-endorsement for improvisation. A scholarship afforded him the opportunity to specialize in old music between 1978 and 1981, including studies with Gustav Leonhardt.
In 1976, van Twillert was the first Dutch organist to reach the final of the Grand Prix de Chartres in France.

  • Kris Kristofferson - For The Good Times

    5:15

    San Sebastian (25 July 2010)

Kristoffer Kris Kristofferson (born June 22, 1936) is an American country music singer, songwriter, musician, and film actor. Born in Brownsville, Texas, he attended Pomona College, where he achieved a degree in literature and specialised in the poetry of Blake. Whilst at college, he published a series of short stories in Atlantic Monthly, and went on to win a Rhodes scholarship to Oxford.
It was in 1958, during his stay in England, that Kristofferson first performed his own music, under the pseudonym 'Kris Carson'. After graduating from Oxford, Kristofferson served in the US army for five years and, upon being discharged, turned down a teaching post in order to pursue his music career in Nashville.

Kristofferson soon scored musical successes, having his songs covered by the likes of Roger Miller and Jerry Lee Lewis, but it was not until Johnny Cash gained a number one hit with Kristofferson's Sunday Mornin' Comin' Down that he achieved fame as a songwriter. Both Sammi Smith and Janis Joplin went on to top the charts with Kristofferson-penned numbers and, in 1970, he unveiled his first, eponymous, studio release.

Kristofferson both wrote the soundtrack for, and appeared, in The Last Movie (1971), as well as starring opposite Gene Hackman in Cisco Pike (1972). In the same year, he scored his first musical hit with Why Me?, and went on to star in Sam Peckinpah's seminal Pat Garrett And Billy The Kid (1973). A further collaboration with Peckinpah, Bring Me The Head Of Alfredo Garcia (1974), as well as a turn opposite the Oscar-winning Ellen Burstyn, in Martin Scorcese's Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore (1974) cemented his position as a reliable screen presence.

Kristofferson secured a breakthrough hit opposite Barbara Streisland, in 1976's A Star Is Born and, although he appeared in a number of films in the next five years, a string of commercial flops such as Michael Cimino's disastrous Heaven's Gate (1981) left his movie career reeling.

He spent much of the next decade in a number of television roles, but concentrated on pursuing his music career with country super-group The Highwaymen, whose eponymous debut went to No.1 in 1985.

After a decade in the wilderness of television mini-series and straight-to-video fare, Kristofferson's career underwent a major renaissance with the release of a Don Was-produced solo album, A Moment Of Forever, and a starring role in John Sayles' 1995 masterpiece, Lone Star. He has since revived his Hollywood career with parts in Payback (1998), the Blade films (1998, 2001, 2004) and Limbo. His latest roles include parts in The Motel Life (2012) and Dolphin Tale 2 (2014).

Overall, Kristofferson has appeared in some 45 films, and recorded over 25 albums, and he remains one of the most successful country and western songwriters of his generation.

For The Good Times is a 1970 song penned by Kris Kristofferson that appeared on his debut album Kristofferson. He wrote the first verse and chorus in 1968 while driving from Nashville to the Gulf of Mexico, but he did not complete the tune and release it until 1970.

Later that year, Ray Price recorded a version of the song which topped the U.S. country music charts and was awarded Song Of The Year by the Academy of Country Music. For The Good Times was Price's fifth #1 single and spent a total of nineteen weeks on the country chart. For The Good Times crossed over onto the pop chart peaking at number eleven, becoming Ray Price's only release to hit the Top 40 of the Billboard Hot 100. Originally Price's label, Columbia Records, released the song as the B side of the single, but switched to promoting For The Good Times after Wayne Newton recorded his own version of the tune. The flip side, Grazin' in Greener Pastures, did receive credit on the country music chart.

¨Originally recorded by Bill Nash, For the Good Times was eventually cut by Ray Price, whose version became a huge Top Ten hit and is a timeless standard from the early '70s. Musically, the song is somewhat similar to Help Me Make It Through the Night -- another song on Kris Kristofferson -- with its sweet and laid-back melody and feel. Looking back on a beautiful relationship, there is a certain rustic feel to the entire song, and this is where the appeal lies. A gorgeous string arrangement is both subtle and dramatic, and it is one of the recording's key ingredients.¨

    (Song Review by Matthew Greenwald,

  • Bach - Cello Suite No. 6 in D major BWV 1012 - Malov | Netherlands Bach Society

    23:51

Cello Suite no. 6 in D major, performed by Sergey Malov for All of Bach, is exceptional in all respects. In this last suite, which is also the longest, Bach makes the instrument ascend to heaven. He does so by using an extra fifth string – ‘a cinq cordes’, as Anna Magdalena Bach described it in the manuscript. The fifth string lies a fifth above the A string, which is usually the highest. You might even argue that Bach allows the cellist to transcend their own instrument.

Recorded for the project All of Bach on November 4th 2016 at the Gashouder of the Westergasfabriek, Amsterdam. If you want to help us complete All of Bach, please subscribe to our channel and consider donating

  • Popular music in Renaissance Italy

    17:53

The period between 1480-1520 was the height of the Italian Renaissance marked by the larger-than-life figures of Leonardo da Vinci, Rafaello Sanzio and Donatello in the art world as well as Josquin des Prez and Heinrich Isaac in the musical realm. Less recognized in the rest of Europe were native born Italians, Marchetto Cara and Bartolomeo Tromboncino among others. These local masters flourished at the court of Isabella d'Este of Ferrara, Marchesa of Mantua, who loomed large over the musical pantheon as la patronesse extraordinaire. Her palaces were adorned with patterns of musical notes on the ceilings and stylized wood inlays of instruments on the walls.

This video celebrates the music and art from that glorious era in Italian history. Below are 15 musical selections and artworks from that prolific age. As always, I extensively edited raw MIDI files downloaded from various websites. To skip to a different piece in the soundtrack, click on the time stamp indicated next to the song title.

  • Benny Sings: Tiny Desk Concert

    11:07

The Tiny Desk is working from home for the foreseeable future. Introducing NPR Music's Tiny Desk (home) concerts, bringing you performances from across the country and the world. It's the same spirit — stripped-down sets, an intimate setting — just a different space.

July 14, 2020 | Bobby Carter -- I've never come across a moderate Benny Sings fan. The Dutch singer-songwriter and producer has maintained a cult following for over 15 years and performed in the United States for the very first time at the Tiny Desk back in 2016. He's released a couple of singles since we've transitioned to Tiny Desk (home) concerts and I felt it was the opportune moment to ask him to take part. Recorded at his studio in Amsterdam, the set list reads like an inventory of quarantine essentials, opening with Apartment from last year's Free Nationals LP and closing with Music. The hook reminds me that I'm not the only one who continues to seek refuge in song. He sings, Music help me through this / I can't do this on my own / But music help me through this / Whenever I'm down.

  • Balkan Gypsy Music

    31:32

Romani music or Gipsy music is the music of the Romani people, who have their origins in northern India, but today live mostly in Europe. Historically nomadic, though now largely settled, the Romani people have long acted as entertainers and tradesmen. In many of the places Romanies live they have become known as musicians. The wide distances travelled have introduced a multitude of influences of Byzantine, Greek, Arabic, Indian, Persian, Turkish, Slavic, Romanian, German, Dutch, French, Spanish and even Jewish musical forms. It is difficult to define the parameters of a unified Romani musical style, as there are many differences in melodic, harmonic, rhythmic and formal structures from region to region. Lyrics to Romani songs are often sung in one or more dialects of the Romani language, and dance frequently accompanies Romani music performance.

The quintessentially Spanish flamenco is to a very large extent the music (and dance, or indeed the culture) of the Romani people of Andalusia. Apart from Romani music for local use, in Eastern Europe a separate Romani music originated for entertainment at parties and celebrations. This music drew its themes from Hungarian, Romanian, Russian and other sources. Later on it gained popularity in Western Europe, where many Romani orchestras were active, playing sophisticated melodies of East European origin. Most Romani music is based on the folk music of the countries where the Romani went through or settled. Local music is adopted and performed – usually instrumental – and, slowly, it is transformed into Romani styles, which are usually more complex than the original styles. In its turn, Romani music has greatly influenced the local music.

  • Bach - Violin Sonata no. 3 in C major BWV 1005 - Sato | Netherlands Bach Society

    24:25

In this Sonata no. 3, performed by Shunske Sato for All of Bach, Bach appears to have been looking to Italy for inspiration. The mysterious first Adagio, for instance, seems just like the opening of the Adagio of the oboe concerto by Marcello. The monumental Fugue in this sonata is full of contrapuntal tricks. Although not exactly Italian, it has no German equivalent either.

  • Secular music in late Medieval Germany

    14:42

The musical selections in this video were transcribed by hand in two German songbooks or Liederbuch: the Lochamer (c.1450) and the Glogauer (c.1480). Many of the compositions and artworks hail from Southern German masters in and around Bavaria. Many of the pieces from both collections were arranged for keyboard instruments, particularly the works by Conrad Paumann which appear as a set at the end of the Lochamer book.

The soundtrack of for this video was extensively edited from files uploaded to various sites. I tried to emulate the sounds of 15th century musical instruments including flute, portatif organ, lute, clavicytherium, psaltery, vielle and recorders.

  • Bach - Cello Suite No. 2 in D minor BWV 1008 - Pincombe | Netherlands Bach Society

    21:58

The second Cello Suite in D minor, performed by Steuart Pincombe for All of Bach, has a dark and introspective tone. It is one of the favourite pieces of Pincombe. As such, he was delighted when we asked him to record this suite in the Main Hall of the Concertgebouw, Amsterdam. The searching character of the piece suits Pincombe’s outlook. In his playing, he always tries to create something new, rather than recreating past experiences.

Published by: Foundation Organ Projects - Amersfoort

WILLEM VAN TWILLERT (1952) studied organ at the Sweelinck Conservatory in Amsterdam with Piet Kee as his Organ professor, with whom he also studied improvisation and composition. In 1975 he began 3 years of orchestral conducting studies with Anton Kersjes. In 1976 he obtained the diploma for Church Music and in 1978 the diploma of Performing Musician cum laude, with a teaching-endorsement for improvisation. A scholarship afforded him the opportunity to specialise in old music between 1978 and 1981, including studies with Gustav Leonhardt.
In 1976, van Twillert was the first Dutch organist to reach the final of the Grand Prix de Chartres in France.

As a composer, he won the second prize and the audience prize at the Hinsz Composition Competition 2005 at the Bovenkerk in Kampen, with his Toccata a la Chaconne for Organ. In October 2006, van Twillert performed the British premiere of the work, at the Annual Festival of New Organ Music in London. The performance is available for download at
In January 2007 Van Twillert obtained the Prize of Honour in the Polish composer competition at Mikolów 2007 with his Sequence for Choir and Organ. See:
In Germany his Toccata ‚Thine be the Glory in Romantic Style, is published by. Butz-music publishers. Email@butz-verlag.de
In 2008 he received for his organ composition Par le Temps the PRIX GASTON LITAIZE during the festival du Comminges in France.

Van Twillert is also known internationally for his recordings of little-known organ literature through his series of CDs, MUSICQ VOOR HET ORGEL. Willem van Twillert has edited music for various Dutch music publishers.

As a church organist he has, since his appointment following a competition in 1979, accompanied the services of three co-operating churches in Amersfoort. The organ lovers of the Netherlands also know him as one of the editors of the monthly magazine de Orgelvriend (the Organ Friend), a function he fulfilled between 1985 and 2006. From 1976 until 2003 van Twillert was the owner and director of a private music school in Bunschoten, and, in 2004 he was invited to give organlectures for a week at the music academy of Sarajevo (Bosnia) on behalf of the Alkmaar foundation, Musicians without Borders.

Willem van Twillert's performances have been featured in several Dutch radio series.

  • Swiss Folk Music

    2:13:40

Music Folk Swiss - Due to a lack of detailed records, folk little is known about Swiss folk music prior to the 19th century music. Some 16th-century lute tablatures have been reconstructed into authentic instrumental arrangements, however, the first major source of information comes from 19th-century collections of folk songs, and work done by musicologist Hanny Christen. One of the oldest varieties of folk music was the Swiss song Kühreihen, an agricultural Alpine song in the Lydian mode. Traditional instruments included alphorn, hammered dulcimer, fife, hurdy-gurdy, castanets, rebec, bagpipe, cittern and shawm.
At the beginning of the 19th century, Swiss folk music was largely performed by ensembles made of itinerant musicians and solo acts using an instrument, with only a few duos. In the 1830s, however, the Swiss military was reorganized, leading to the formation of brass bands that used modern instruments. These instruments, mostly brass or wind, were built much better than those played by itinerants, and musicians brought them back to their villages. Local players joined these ensembles, which played dance music for festivals and other celebrations. Dance styles included schottisch, mazurka, waltz and polka.
In 1829, the accordion was invented in Vienna, and it had spread to Switzerland by 1836. The accordion was popular because it was relatively easy to play and cheap to acquire, and took only one musician to play the melody and accompaniment. By the 1850s, the accordion was an integral part of Swiss folk music, and semi-professional ensembles were appearing to play at large social dances. Alongside the brass bands came string instruments like the violin and double bass; string bands soon began to displace the older brass bands. The accordion, however, did not make an appearance in these dance bands until about 1903, and it eventually replaced the two violins which had become standard.

The legendary trumpet- and flugelhorn player Ack van Rooyen was born in 1930. In 1946 he traveled to Indonesia with his brother Jerry and the Tom van der Stap Bigband. They heard a music style that would change their life forever: bebop. In 1949 Ack graduated with honors from the Royal Conservatory The Hague. He then traveled to New York where he, his brother and pianist/trumpet player Rob Pronk listened to great jazz heroes on 52nd Street. Back in The Netherlands the Van Rooyen’s formed a jazzband called ‘Boptet’. Ack also participated in Het Gelders Orkest and after that he worked as a studio musician at Radio Hilversum.

The list of people he worked with is endless. • Wat zullen we drinken with lyrics - - Er is genoeg voor iedereen

    7:21

Dutch folk song originally from Brittany, created in the late 1920s. Called Son ar chistr, the Song of the Cider. It was popularized by farmers when sung at the end of harvest time, to make fun of themselves. The lyrics in Breton talk about a man who has a tough time with his wife beating him and cursing him all the time. But, as said the lyrics: Cider is made to be drunk, and girls to be loved!. Ar chistr ' zo graet 'vit bout evet, hag ar merc'hed 'vit bout karet !

In Nederland werd de versie van Rapalje, getiteld Wat zullen we drinken, populair. Deze folkband op Keltische leest ontdeed het lied van zijn politieke lading en voegde drie coupletten van eigen hand toe. (Wikipedia)

Wat zullen we drinken - Lyrics
    (Lyrics: Hans Sanders / Rapalje)

Eerst zullen wij eten, dus schuif maar an
Eerst zullen wij eten, zeven gangen lang
Eerst zullen wij eten, dus schuif maar an

  • Pat Metheny and The Metropole Orchestra ~ Third Wind

    8:42

    PAT METHENY
Patrick Bruce Pat Metheny (born August 12, 1954) is an American jazz guitarist and composer.
One of the most successful and critically acclaimed jazz musicians to come to prominence in the 1970s and '80s, he is the leader of the Pat Metheny Group and is also involved in duets, solo works and other side projects. His style incorporates elements of progressive and contemporary jazz, post-bop, latin jazz and jazz fusion.

    THE METROPOLE ORCHESTRA
The Metropole Orchestra (or Metropole Orkest) is a jazz and pop orchestra based in the Netherlands, and is the largest full time ensemble of its kind in the world. A hybrid orchestra, it is a combination of jazz big band and symphony orchestra. Comprising 52 musicians, it is versatile across many musical forms, and is equipped with a double rhythm section - one for pop and rock, and one for jazz based music.
It was founded in 1945 by Dolf van der Linden at the urging of officials from Netherlands Public Broadcasting, which manages and subsidizes the orchestra. The name of the group was suggested by one of the musicians. Dolf van der Linden led the ensemble for 35 years until he stepped down in 1980. He was replaced by Rogier van Otterloo, who led the group until his sudden death in 1988. Dick Bakker held the baton until 1995 when the current conductor, Vince Mendoza, took over.
The orchestra is a regular feature at the North Sea Jazz festival and the yearly Holland Festival along with many TV and radio programs broadcast to millions. The ever-growing Dutch film and television industry relies heavily on the Metropole Orchestra for its film scores. Since 2005 the Metropole is under the baton of its Chief, four-time Grammy Award winner Vince Mendoza, and can be seen frequenting the concert stage, in festivals and on recordings in the Netherlands as well as internationally.

    NORTH SEA JAZZ FESTIVAL
The North Sea Jazz Festival is an annual jazz festival held each second weekend of July in the Netherlands at the Ahoy venue. It used to be in The Hague but since 2006 it has been held in Rotterdam. This is because the Statenhal where the festival was held before was demolished in 2006.

  • Voodoo in the Shadows - About the songs - ‘Call Their Name’

    1:01

The first in a series of short clips, giving a glimpse into stories behind the songs on my new album ‘Voodoo in the Shadows’.
The opening song ‘Call Their Name’ is my tribute to some influential older musicians - my blues heroes - who, in various cases, I was lucky enough to meet, play, tour or record with... A lot of blues songs reference respected, older players but I didn’t want this to be just a list of musicians. Rather, it is a very personal song about people who not only influenced me on my blues journey but also have some special connection. It is well worth looking up all these musicians and hearing their music, which lives on even though they’ve gone.
Hubert Sumlin, Pinetop Perkins, Willie ‘Big Eyes’ Smith, James Cotton, Memphis Minnie, Jessie Mae Hemphill, Dutch Tilders.
‘Keep the Faith’ (Dutch Tilders, in tribute to his friend Brownie McGhee)

    Musicians: Fiona Boyes(electric guitar/vocals) & Mark Grunden(drums/percussion)

  • Rosanne Philippens - Interview

    8:38

We met the very likeable artist Rosanne Philippens in the Berlin Hotel Orania.Berlin for an interview. There we could also see and hear a wonderful concert in an intimate setting.

Rosanne Philippens open and communicative style of performance won her first prizes at competitions including the Dutch National Violin Competition (Amsterdam Concertgebouw 2009) and the Freiburg International Violin Competition (2014).
Rosanne has appeared as a soloist under Yannick Nézét-Sequin, Lawrence Foster, Antony Hermus, Michel Tabachnik, with orchestras including the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra, the Philharmonisches Orchester Stuttgart, the Barcelona Symphony Orchestra and the Jerusalem Symphony Orchestra, and she performs regularly at the Concertgebouw Amsterdam, the Berliner Philharmoniker and other prestigious venues.

In the 2017-18 season Rosanne will appear with the Dutch Radio Philharmonic Orchestra in the famous Saturday Matinee Series in the Concertgebouw, with the Amsterdam Sinfonietta, the Sinfonie Orchester Sankt Gallen, the Joensuu Chamber Orchestra, the Orchestre International de Genève and at festivals in Iceland, France, Israel, Germany and The Netherlands.

For 2018-19 concerts are scheduled with the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra and the Residentie Orchestra The Hague.
Rosanne captures a great love for chamber music. She appears regularly with musicians suchas Nicolas Altstaedt, Vilde Frang, Julien Quentin, Torleif Thedéen, István Várdai, Víkingur Ólafsson, Guy Braunstein, Amihai Grosz and other fine musicians all over Europe and in major halls like the Concertgebouw, the Berliner Philharmoniker,Tonhalle Zürich, Laeiszhalle Hamburg.

In an old Amsterdam warehouse/antique shop, Rosanne is hosting her own concert series called ‘The Amsterdam Salon’. The evening opens with a concert, played by Rosanne and her friends from all over the world, following a clear theme, while the audience listens on comfortable couches, sipping good wine. After the concert there is an artist-jam session until the early hours.
Rosanne started to play violin at the age of three with Anneke Schilt and later on with the famous violin pedagogue Coosje Wijzenbeek. She continued her studies with Vera Beths at the Royal Conservatory in The Haag, and with Ulf Wallin at the Hanns Eisler Akademie in Berlin, graduating from both with the highest possible grades.

On personal recommendation of Janine Jansen, Rosanne plays the ‘Barrere’ Stradivarius from the Elise Mathilde Foundation, the violin that Janine Jansen used to play for fifteen years.

  • Elvis Presley - A Little Less Conversation

    2:13

A Little Less Conversation is a song written by Mac Davis and Billy Strange originally performed by Elvis Presley for the 1968 film Live a Little, Love a Little. The song became a hit in the United States when released as a single with Almost in Love as the A-side. A 2002 remix by Junkie XL of a later re-recording of the song by Presley became a worldwide hit, topping the singles charts in nine countries and was awarded certifications in ten countries by 2003.

The song was first recorded on March 7th 1968 at Western Recorders in Hollywood, California, and released on a single backed by Almost in Love, another song from the movie. The song was not released on an LP until November 1970, when it was included on the RCA Camden budget label LP Almost in Love. There are several different takes that were made of the song in the session on March 7th. The single version used take 16, which was also used for the soundtrack of the film. The version released on the Almost In Love album is take 10, which is 1 second longer in duration. The musicians on the March 7th recording session included Hal Blaine, drums; Al Casey, guitar; Larry Knechtel, bass; and Don Randi, piano.

Following the song's use in the 2001 film Ocean's Eleven, A Little Less Conversation was remixed by Dutch musician Tom Holkenborg, better known as Junkie XL (alternatively JXL). The electronic remix featured Elvis with a lower voice, and added emphasis to the 1968 guitars, horns and a funk drum beat. Holkenborg is the first artist outside the Presley organization to receive authorization from the Elvis Presley estate to remix an Elvis Presley song (in the 1980s, Elvis' longtime producer Felton Jarvis had overseen remixes of a number of Elvis recordings that saw new backing added to Presley's original vocals, the first of which were released as the album Guitar Man in 1981). The electronic version of the song became a number-one hit in the UK in 2002. The song also became a top ten hit in upwards of 17 other countries, reaching number 1 in 13 of them.

In 2002, the TV special version of A Little Less Conversation remixed by Junkie XL was used for Nike's 2002 FIFA World Cup advertising campaign, titled Secret Tournament. A single, credited to Elvis vs. JXL, was issued and went on to become a Number 1 hit in over 20 countries. For the remix, JXL used Take 2 of the song as a sample. At about the same time, a compilation of Presley's US number-one chart hits, titled ELV1S: 30 No. 1 Hits, was being prepared for release. At the last minute, A Little Less Conversation (Junkie's remix Version) was added as the album's 31st track just before its release in October 2002. The full 6:09 version was edited slightly and extended to 6:22, and this version was featured on the US version of Junkie XL's 2004 album Radio JXL: A Broadcast from the Computer Hell Cabin.

In the United States, the song peaked at number 50 on the Billboard Hot 100 pop singles chart, the first Hot 100 hit for Presley since 1981, and extending his list of charted singles into the 21st century. It also spent four consecutive weeks at number one on the UK Singles Chart.
