The original Buena Vista Social Club album was recorded for World Circuit Records over six days at the vintage EGREM studios in Havana. Released in 1997, the album went on to become a worldwide phenomenon, selling over 8 million copies and contributing to the rise in popularity of Cuban, as well as Latin American, music.

Since forming in London in the mid-1980s, World Circuit Records has made its reputation by producing some of the finest albums of the past three decades. The label’s prestigious roster includes Buena Vista Social Club and associated solo artists (including Ibrahim Ferrer, Rubén González, Omara Portuondo and Orlando ‘Cachaíto’ López), Malian blues pioneer Ali Farka Touré, Malian divas and social activists Oumou Sangaré and Fatoumata Diawara, master kora player Toumani Diabaté, the illustrious Orchestra Baobab, musical iconoclast Cheikh Lô, and Fela Kuti’s legendary drummer and co-creator of Afrobeat Tony Allen.

With reissues and brand new releases coming soon, World Circuit continues to bring diverse, genre-defying music to a wider audience.

    LYRICS
    (Spanish)
De Alto Cedro voy para Marcané
Luego a Cueto voy para Mayarí.
    El cariño que te tengo
    Yo no lo puedo negar
    Se me sale la babita
    Yo no lo puedo evitar.
    Cuando Juanica y Chan Chan
    En el mar cernían arena
    Como sacudía el ‘jibe’
A Chan Chan le daba pena.
    Limpia el camino de paja
    Que yo me quiero sentar
    En aquel tronco que veo
    Y así no puedo llegar.
De Alto Cedro voy para Marcané
Luego a Cueto voy para Mayarí.

    (English)
    I’m going from Alto Cedro
    to Marcané
    Then from Cueto, I’m going
    to Mayarí.
The love I have for you I cannot deny
    My mouth is watering
    I just can’t help myself.
    When Juanika and Chan Chan
Sifted sand together on the beach
    How her bottom shook and
    Chan Chan was aroused!
    Clean the dry sugar cane
    leaves from the path
So I can get to that trunk
    I want to sit down.
    I’m going from Alto Cedro
    to Marcané
    Then from Cueto, I’m going
    to Mayarí.

Oct. 27, 2017 | Felix Contreras -- Natalia Lafourcade is a successful singer-songwriter whose voice and music live on the edge of pop, but maintain a distinct independence.

A few years ago, while Lafourcade was traveling Brazil, she felt a great nostalgia for her native Mexico and its folk music. When she finally returned home, she immediately called some friends for the kind of party that is ubiquitous in Latin America: lots of social drinking, lots of food and lots of guitars and singing. Classic folk songs were on the playlist and a good time was had by all.

Someone recorded the informal jam session and Lafourcade's management team heard the tapes. This is your next record! they told her.

That record, Musas: Un Homenaje al Folclore Latinoamericano en Manos de los Macorinos, Vol. 1, was a commercial and critical hit, and received a Latin Grammy nomination for Album of the Year. It only made sense for Lafourcade to bring her Musas tour to the Tiny Desk. The performances are an ode to a magical time in Mexican popular music, one that is revived with every note this singer and her band perform.

One important historical note: The two older gentlemen on the video are Juan Carlos Allende and Miguel Peña, two revered musicians who played with the iconic ranchera singer Chavela Vargas.

  • Los Hacheros: NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert

    23:41

June 30, 2016 by FELIX CONTRERAS • Sometimes it's necessary to get back to basics. In the case of Los Hacheros, that means returning to the deep groove of Afro-Caribbean music that provides the source material for modern salsa and all of its permutations.

As you'll see in this video, the band's dedication to authenticity is masterfully executed with a serious dose of sabor. In fact, the band was so swinging, it was impossible to sit on the sidelines and pass up my own chance to jump in during Bambulaye and perform with the band myself. So clear out the furniture and turn up the sound on this video to create your own dance party.

Playing For Change (PFC) is a movement created to inspire and connect the world through music, born from the shared belief that music has the power to break down boundaries and overcome distances between people. The primary focus of PFC is to record and film musicians performing in their natural environments and combine their talents and cultural power in innovative videos called Songs Around The World. Creating these videos motivated PFC to form the Playing For Change Band—a tangible, traveling representation of its mission, featuring musicians met along their journey; and establish the Playing For Change Foundation—a separate 501(c)3 nonprofit organization dedicated to building music and art schools for children around the world. Through these efforts, Playing For Change aims to create hope and inspiration for the future of our planet.

  • Ondatrópica - Album teaser

    5:18

Ondatrópica's debut album is released on 16th July on CD, 2xCD, 3xLP & download through Soundway Records.

Conceived by Colombian musician Mario Galeano, the force behind the band Frente Cumbiero, and English producer Will 'Quantic' Holland, Ondatrópica brings together an all-star cast representing both the classic and modern styles of la musica Colombiana.

Over 3 weeks in January 2012 at the famous Discos Fuentes studios in Medellín legendary figures from Colombian music joined a group of younger Colombian musicians that included members of both Mario's band Frente Cumbeiro and Quantic's Combo Barbaro. The plan; to re-interpret the tropical musical heritage of Colombia with new approaches in composition, arrangement and production in a classic and mythical setting.

MUSIC FROM PLANET EARTH: PAST, PRESENT & FUTURE

Soundway Records was conceived in 2002 by label owner Miles Cleret whilst returning from Ghana with a hoard of dusty old 45s and LPs that had mostly not been heard outside the former Gold Coast since their original release. Planned on a whim the trip was not one of the carefully planned research expeditions that Miles would later embark on to any number of far-flung tropical destinations. On the contrary he left England with no idea of what he might find or that it might be the start of a career in the record business.

Although the label has it's roots in West Africa the scope has grown to include many other parts of the tropical belt with the aim of making available recordings that have in most cases never been available outside of their original countries and often not even there for over 30 years. Over the years Soundway's modus operandi has been to approach the music from a different angle from many of the more established World Music labels. By focusing on more obscure artists as well as big names and often concentrating on progressive recordings more in sync with Cleret's generation and background in DJ culture and dance-music. Styles have included afro-beat, funk, highlife, ethio-jazz, molam, calypso, cumbia, champeta, biguine, latin-jazz and disco as well as many unclassifiable recordings.

Since 2012 Soundway has begun releasing new material from a carefully selected handful of contemporary recording artists including acclaimed acts Ondatropica, Bomba Estereo and Ibibio Sound Machine

  • Aterciopelados: Colombian band treasures Beethoven and Mother Nature | Music Documentary

    5:52

Aterciopelados from Colombia: with five Grammy nominations, they are one of Latin America’s most successful bands. For 30 years, the famous Colombian band has been performing songs about a better world, with themes of social justice, gender equality, and environmentalism. Many of their songs express a strong connection with nature, and are about water, forests, birds, indigenous people - everything to do with Mother Nature.

To mark Beethoven’s 250th birthday, Aterciopelados played an exclusive concert at the Teatro Colón in Colombia’s capital city, Bogotá. For Andrea Echeverri, singer and guitarist of Aterciopelados, Beethoven was an activist, who - like herself - raised his voice against the ills of the world. Her ambitious goal: saving this planet for at least the next 250 years!

Colombia ranks second worldwide in terms of biodiversity. But half of its ecosystems are at risk. Twelve point seventy-seven percent of Colombia’s land area is protected as national parks. This also includes the Páramos – unique moorlands in the Andes. These are endangered by climate change and mining. Tragically, for many years there has been a serious problem in Colombia with environmentalists being murdered.

Singing in the face of danger: Aterciopelados continue to invoke the love of nature and respect towards women.

In 2020, the world celebrates the 250th birthday of Ludwig van Beethoven. With his Sixth Symphony, the “Pastoral,” Beethoven expressed his romantic appreciation of nature, and created a musical testament to that appreciation. Nature continues to inspire composers to this day – as does Beethoven’s Sixth Symphony. Now, that work has also inspired the “Beethoven Pastoral Project, captured by Deutsche Welle in the documentary film, “The Sound of Nature.” It presents five musicians and ensembles on five continents who are currently exploring the themes of nature and the environment. Aterciopelados is one of the ensembles portrayed.

  • Monsieur Periné: NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert

    18:36

March 4, 2016 by FELIX CONTRERAS

Monsieur Periné hails from Colombia, a country known for its Afro-Colombian cumbia, as well as New York-style salsa. Instead, however, the band has embraced 1920s-era, guitar-driven jazz from the U.S. The unlikely inspiration has resulted in a large and international following, as well as a Latin Grammy not too long ago: Monsieur Periné was named 2015's Best New Artist.

The Shadow of Your Smile, also known as Love Theme from The Sandpiper, is a popular song. The music was written by Johnny Mandel with the lyrics written by Paul Francis Webster. The song was introduced in the 1965 film The Sandpiper, with a trumpet solo by Jack Sheldon and later became a minor hit for Tony Bennett (Johnny Mandel arranged and conducted his version as well). It won the Grammy Award for Song of the Year and the Academy Award for Best Original Song. In 2004 the song finished at #77 in AFI's 100 Years...100 Songs poll of the top tunes in American cinema.

Well-known versions of the song were recorded by Barbra Streisand (on her 1965 album My Name Is Barbra, Two...), by Johnny Mathis (on his 1966 album with the same title), singer Shirley Bassey (on her 1966 album I've Got a Song for You), Andy Williams, Chris Montez, Percy Faith, Rita Reys, Al Martino, Perry Como, Nancy Sinatra, Astrud Gilberto, Peggy Lee, Sammy Davis, Jr., Sarah Vaughan and Frank Sinatra. Connie Francis recorded the song in English, Spanish (La sombra de tu sonrisa), Portuguese (À sombra do teu sorriso) and in Italian (Castelli di sabbia). One can be found on Romantically Yours, another on Vulnerable, and a live version on Marvin Gaye: Live at the Copa. Herb Alpert & the Tijuana Brass recorded an instrumental version for their 1966 album, What Now My Love. The Italian singer MINA sang this song in 1968 on television and was later released on a CD called Le canzonissime. German singer Udo Lindenberg included a more rock-oriented cover of the song on his 1986 single Germans. In 2006, The Central Band of the Royal British Legion recorded an album with The Shadow Of Your Smile as the lead title track. Saxophonist Boots Randolph recorded an instrumental version of the song on a album with the Knightbridge Strings Boots with Strings in 1966 which was later released on CD.
Other notable versions include Nancy Ames singing a Spanish version (La Sombra De Tu Sonrisa) on her 1966 album Latin Pulse. Pepe Jaramillo recorded a Latin dance version on his 1971 EMI album Tequila Cocktail. Sergio Franchi recorded the song on his 1967 RCA Victor album, From Sergio - With Love. A version by Engelbert Humperdinck is available on YouTube.
The Bobby Darin album, Bobby Darin Sings The Shadow of Your Smile, was notable in that the album's first side contained all of the songs nominated for the 1965 Academy Award for Best Original Song.
It is the title piece in the Astrud Gilberto album of the same name, released in October, 1965.
Jazz saxophonist Eddie Harris recorded it in 1965. There are many other jazz versions, notably by Ella Fitzgerald, Wes Montgomery, Oscar Peterson, Oliver Nelson and Bill Evans.
The 1966 single by Johnny Mathis reached #117 in the US publication Record World.
Al Hirt released a version of the song as the B-side to his single The Silence (Il Silenzio).
Harry James recorded a live version in 1966 on his album Live At
Bobby Vinton covered it in Bobby Vinton Sings the Newest Hits in 1967.
Organist Brother Jack McDuff recorded a purely instrumental cover of the song in his 1967 album Tobacco Road. The same year, composer/arranger/keyboardist Clare Fischer was the featured soloist on a version included in his LP Songs for Rainy Day Lovers, supported by his own string arrangement. Likewise, Nashville sax man Boots Randolph offered a version on his LP Boots With Strings.
Tommy McCook, a Cuban-Jamaican rocksteady, ska, reggae saxophonist, recorded a version of this theme, which appears in the Trojan Records compilation Down On Bond Street with the Supersonics and other musicians.
In 1983, the R&B group D-Train had a significant dance hit with their version from the 12 single The Shadow of Your Smile / Keep Giving Me Love.
In 1983, instrumental group Pieces of a Dream covered the song from their album Imagine This.
Tony Bennett re-recorded this song for his album Duets: An American Classic with Colombian-rock singer Juanes in a Spanglish version. This marked the first time that Juanes sang in English and Tony Bennett in Spanish.

Hull's Stephen Hunt scored the opening goal of the Premier League season on his competitive debut. The league season is scheduled to end on 9 May 2010.[3] The fixture list was announced on 17 June.[4][5] Prior to each opening week match, a minute's applause was held in memory of Sir Bobby Robson's passing. For the first time in the Premier League's history, there were no draws on the opening day.[6]

Blazing lights, lush green field, rocking music, jaw-dropping football squad and prominent stars - the sweltering, breathtaking extravaganza of football is good to go! Add to this a larger-than-life opening ceremony and audience is sure to get a taste of the most magnificent sporting event of the year. FIFA World Cup 2010 carnival is all set to put the stage on fire, with Johannesburg acting as the key host city. The World Cup opening ceremony is anticipated to be a real treat to the soccer-loving souls.

This year, FIFA World Cup will have an extraordinary feat with players and audience enjoying a 2-day opening that would start on Thursday night. Tonight, witness the biggest pop extravaganza in the continent's history with 1,581 performers across the globe. Shakira will perform the official 2010 World Cup song, Waka Waka This Time for Africa. She will team up with a local South African group, Freshlyground, to sway the spectators with a heart-throbbing performance.

Also, rocking the stage in the grand ceremony will be distinguished artists, John Legend, Alicia Keys, the Black Eyed Peas, and Colombian heart-throb rocker Juanes. Top African musicians such as Amadou and Mariam, The Parlotones and Angelique Kidjo, will also be performing. Best part of the Thursday night concert is that the profit earned will be donated to 20 Centers for 2010, a charity campaign dedicated to enhancing public health, education and development across Africa. FIFA opted to keep the Friday's actual opening ceremony, before the game between the hosts and Mexico, performances somewhat a secret. This is mainly done to sustain the pinnacle of expectations and excitement!

We traveled throughout the villages and cities of Colombia and along the way, we were introduced to some of the best musicians in the country. This nation with so much history and soul is represented perfectly by the music and spirit of Toto La Momposina and her band. We asked her to share a traditional Colombian song with us, and this version of Los Sabores del Porro performed beneath an ancient tree is the result.

Oct. 25, 2019 | Felix Contreras -- For just about fifteen minutes, the members of Rio Mira created a living and very melodic connection to Africa. Set behind a large marimba — and drums that are unique to their corner of the world — the members of the band performed music that is the legacy of enslaved people who were in both Ecuador and Colombia. Rio Mira takes its name from a river that separates Ecuador and Colombia and empties into the Pacific Ocean.

Rio Mira's three songs in this performance are dominated by the marimba and accompanied by drums from both Europe and Africa. La Pepa de Tangaré references the culinary joys of life and, like the rest of their set, celebrates life along the river: soft breezes, loving friends, the embrace of Africa and, of course, lots of festejando (partying)!

If you're a little rusty on your college Spanish classes, the extended narration in Román Román tells the tale of a village man who has healing powers and challenges death.

For me, the principal attractions to this group are the instruments and the musical skills that were handed down for generations along the river, and how they eventually ended up here on this video for you to enjoy. I dare you to not move your hips along with these infectious grooves!

Based in Los Angeles and fronted by the smoky-voiced Marisol Hernandez, the fast-rising band La Santa Cecilia splices and dices an array of Mexican and South American sounds in its songs, from Mexican norteño and ranchera to Colombian cumbia. Here, its members perform smart originals and covers of U2's One and Soft Cell's Tainted Love — all with a wry, old-soul knowingness. La Santa Cecilia has already received a Latin Grammy nomination in 2011, but with this GlobalFEST appearance, it's poised to break out to a broader audience. -- ANASTASIA TSIOULCAS

  • Orquesta Pacho Galan - Estambul

    2:36

    FOR SALE :

    SWING COLOMBIANO

The legendary composer and band leader Pacho Galan’s take on Estambul is another example of how American swing and Colombian music can blend into a unique musical melting pot. The song starts with hard tambor breaks and maracas kicking in badly. The playful horns driven by the cumbia rhythm make it impossible not to dance on this tune.

Pacho Galan was born in Soledad, near Barranquilla, in the north of Colombia. This is the region where African rhythms were mixed with indigenous music to what is nowadays considered as traditional Colombian music. Pacho Galan was one of the first and biggest innovators of the country’s music. Besides modernising the sound, he also invented new rhythms that were soon adopted by other musicians and later became common musical styles. Pacho Galan went through life as ‘el Rey del Merecumbe’, thanks to his most famous musical invention, the merecumbe rhythm. Apart from being an innovator, he was also an outstanding composer. He has been praised as one of the ‘Big Three’ composers in Colombia, next to Lucho Bermudez and Edmundo Arias.
The song Estambul is a comic song composed by Jimmy Kennedy and Nat Simon in 1953, referring to the renaming of Constantinople to Istanbul in 1930. The first version of this song by the Four Lads became an instant hit. Through the years, numerous interpretations of this tune have been recorded.

He turns into a hero when with a musical instrument. Kids in Colombia challenges against an “invisible barrier” with the “power of music” and opens up their future.

When was the last time you played a musical instrument?

“I’m a HERO Program” is a program presented by Yamaha, a company that provided instruments all over the world for over a century.

Colombian children will play an instrument for the first time. Then they will grow with their own power to go up to a stage with pro football players who are longing for everyone in the country.

At the game of ATLÉTICO NACIONAL, a world-famous football club, they will play the Colombian national anthem, the spirit of their people.

We believe that with this experience, kids will build up their self-confidence and drive them to open up their future.

And we hope that this scene would signify the power to break the “invisible barrier” and give other people courage and power.
