We kindly invite you to SUPPORT OUR WORK AND GET ACCESS to more videos and free downloads:

In music as in life, the things that make us different make us stronger. All the various instruments, tones, perspectives, and cultures in this recording combine to create a new version of this classic Song Around The World.

The idea was born a few years ago during breakfast at the Byron Bay Bluesfest in Australia. Our friend and drummer, Peter Bunetta, introduced me to Tom Johnston of The Doobie Brothers and we talked about taking Listen to the Music around the world. We started the track with an acoustic guitar demo played to a click track and then added bass from Colombia, tablas and veena from India, and then headed to the Redwood Forest in Northern California to record and film Tom Johnston live outside. We then recorded and filmed Patrick Simmons and John McFee playing along to the track in a park in San Diego. The journey then continued throughout North and South America, Europe, The Middle East, Asia, and Africa. This final version features 30 musicians from 12 countries united through their love of music.

Listen to the music and change the world!

Amazing Grace - O Gnade Gottes wunderbar | David Döring - Panflöte | Flauta de Pan | Pan flute

    Musik: Traditional
    Was ist Amazing Grace?

O Gnade Gottes wunderbar - deutscher Text

    1. Oh Gnade Gottes, wunderbar
    hast du errettet mich.
Ich war verloren ganz und gar,
    war blind, jetzt sehe ich.

    2. Die Gnade hat mich Furcht gelehrt
    und auch von Furcht befreit
seitdem ich mich zu Gott bekehrt
    bis hin zur Herrlichkeit.

    3. Durch Schwierigkeiten mancher Art
    wurd' ich ja schon geführt,
doch hat die Gnade mich bewahrt,
    die Ehre Gott gebührt.

    4. Wenn wir zehntausend Jahre sind
    in seiner Herrlichkeit,
mein Herz noch von der Gnade singt
    wie in der ersten Zeit.

  • Raag Poorvi | Rudra Veena: India’s King Instrument | Jyoti Hegde | Music of India

#darbarfestival | Jyoti Hegde is one of only a handful who has mastered the rudra veena. Here she uses this rare instrument to superbly renders the comparatively rare Raag Poorvi.
► Join our newsletter at for the finest in Indian classical music and dance, and watch full length exclusive concerts in pristine HD on the Darbar Player:

    Learn more about the music:

Jyoti Hegde is among the world’s leading rudra veena players. Sitar was her first love, and she studied the instrument under Bindhu Madhav Pathak, starting training at the comparatively late age of 12. But on hearing her guru play the veena she became instantly drawn to its slow, low tones, and asked to learn.

Her guru refused, telling her that women could not play it. After some persistence he offered to give her a trial lesson, but deliberately set her up on an old, difficult to play veena in the hope that she would be dissuaded. But she took to it with talent and determination, practicing hard enough that Bindhu soon asked her father to buy her a better quality instrument. But even from there the path to mastery was not straightforward - her mother urged her to give up, protesting that the veena’s playing position could damage the uterus.

Jyoti was undeterred (and now has a 29-year old son), going on to learn more of dhrupad’s patient grammar from Indudhar Nirodi and esteemed master Asad Ali Khan. Her acclaimed style largely adheres to Asad’s Khandarbani Gharana, but is also influenced by her continuing expertise in the sitar. She sees her music a form of nāda yoga, based on the ancient Sanskrit premise that all creation consists of nāda, or sound vibrations. Listen to more of Jyoti here:

Poorvi is a sunset raga, which to many listeners evokes a serious, mystical mood. It originated in Eastern India, evolving from Raag Purvagauda by around the 16th century. It is the fundamental raag of Poorvi thaat [base scale], but is is somewhat rare today, with the structurally similar Raag Puriya Dhanashree often being preferred. Poorvi most importantly differs from Puriya Dhanashree in that it can take both a shuddha and a tivra [natural and raised] Ma. It takes the swaras SrGmPdNS, forming an angular shape which mixes wide and narrow tonal intervals. Ga and Ni are respectively the vadi and samvadi [king and queen notes], and Sa and Pa are often avoided in ascending lines, giving the scale a characteristic vacancy.

Recorded at Darbar on 20 Sep 2014 at London’s Southbank Centre:
    -Jyoti Hegde (rudra veena)
    -Surdarshan Chana (jori)
    -Debipriya Sircar (tanpura)

  • NEC Philharmonia | Gabriela Lena Frank - Leyendas: An Andean Walkabout

Lina Gonzaléz-Granados conducts the NEC Philharmonia in a livestreamed, socially-distanced performance of Gabriela Lena Frank's Leyendas (Legends): An Andean Walkabout on October 17, 2020 in New England Conservatory's Jordan Hall.

Praised for her attention to orchestral colors (OperaWire) and ability to create lightning changes in tempo, meter, and effect (Boston Musical Intelligencer), NEC alumna Lina González-Granados has distinguished herself nationally and internationally as a talented young conductor of the symphonic and operatic repertoire. Her spirited interpretations of the orchestral repertoire, as well as her dedication to highlighting new and unknown works by Latin-American composers, has earned her international recognition, most recently as a recipient of the Sphinx Medal of Excellence, the Solti Foundation US Career Assistance Award, and the Third Prize along with the European Concert Hall Association (ECHO) Award of La Maestra Competition at the Paris Philharmonie.

Born and raised in Cali, Colombia, Lina made her conducting debut in 2008 with the Youth Orchestra of Bellas Artes in Cali. She holds a Master of Music degree in Conducting with Charles Peltz and a Graduate Diploma in Choral Conducting with Erica Washburn, both from New England Conservatory, and a Doctor of Musical Arts in Orchestral Conducting from Boston University. Her principal mentors include Marin Alsop, Bernard Haitink, Bramwell Tovey, Yannick Nézet-Séguin, and
    Riccardo Muti.

Leyendas: An Andean Walkabout was originally composed for string quartet in 2001 and arranged for string orchestra in 2003. According to the composer, the piece mixes elements from western classical and Andean folk music instruments, traditions into a six-part suite. “Toyos” depicts one of the most recognizable instruments of the Andes, a large panpipe which is often played in parallel fourths or fifths. “Tarqueda” is a forceful and fast number featuring the tarka, a heavy wooden duct flute that is blown harshly in order to split the tone. “Himno de Zampoñas” features a particular type of panpipe ensemble that divides up melodies through a technique known as hocketing -- hence the unusual scoring of double stops in this movement. “Chasqui” depicts a legendary figure from the Inca period, the chasqui runner, who sprinted great distances to deliver messages between towns separated from one another by the Andean peaks. “Canto de Velorio” portrays another well-known Andean personality, a professional crying woman known as the llorona. “Coqueteos” is a flirtatious love song sung by gallant men known as romanceros who sing in harmony with one another against a backdrop of guitars.

Currently serving as Composer-in-Residence with the storied Philadelphia Orchestra and included in the Washington Post's list of the 35 most significant women composers in history (August, 2017), identity has always been at the center of composer/pianist Gabriela Lena Frank's music. Born in Berkeley, California (September, 1972), to a mother of mixed Peruvian/Chinese ancestry and a father of Lithuanian/Jewish descent, Gabriela explores her multicultural heritage through her compositions. Inspired by the works of Bela Bartók and Alberto Ginastera, Gabriela has traveled extensively throughout South America in creative exploration. Her music often reflects not only her own personal experience as a multi-racial Latina, but also refract her studies of Latin American cultures, incorporating poetry, mythology, and native musical styles into a western classical framework that is uniquely her own.

  • Bela Fleck And Abigail Washburn: NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert

May 11, 2018 | Bob Boilen -- A very pregnant Abigail Washburn points to Bela Fleck at the Tiny Desk and says and just so you know, this is his fault. I won't spoil the video by telling you his response.

Bela Fleck and Abigail Washburn are two American musical treasures. This husband-and-wife banjo duo write original tunes steeped in the roots of folk music. Their playing is sweetly paced with melodies interweaving through their intricate, percussive picking all while Abigail soars above it all with her discerning, yearning voice.

Their first tune, Over the Divide, was written at the height of the Syrian Refugee Crisis. They'd read a story about a Jewish, yodeling, Austrian sheep herder who helped Syrians out of Hungary, through the backroads that likely only sheep herders know.

The second tune, Bloomin' Rose, is a response to Standing Rock and the Dakota pipeline that is seen as a threat to water and ancient burial grounds. The intensity and thoughtfulness in Bela Fleck's and Abigail Washburn's music is why it will shine for a good long while, the way great folk tunes stay relevant over the ages.

For the third tune, Abigail waddled over to a clogging board. And before she began her rhythmic patter, told us all that my doctor said that what I'm about to do is ok! I have compression belts and tights on that you can't see. They then launched into Take Me To Harlan, another one of their songs from their 2017 album Echo In The Valley.

Both Bela and Abigail have come to the Tiny Desk separately in different musical configurations: Bela with Edgar Meyer on bass fiddle and Zakir Hussain on tabla, and Abigail with her band celebrating both American and Chinese traditions. But together they are a timeless power that must be witnessed.

This formation is playing contemporary, imrovisational chamber music. Inroduced itself to the public in the autumn of 2002 on the GyorFree Music Festival. The group's compositions are inspired by the musical cultures of Africa, the Far East, and the Balkans; but in the more strictly structured pieces the influences of medieval music, European folk music and contemporary music can be discovered. Ektar is an Indian word, which means one single string. In their expressiveness, melody variations and rythmic sensitivity, the four musicians truly seem to resonate to the vibrations of the one single string.

  • How Bach can help you master improvisation

I demonstrate the value improvising trombone players (or any musician) can gain from playing the Bach Cello Suites. Not just running through them, but playing their intervals, phrases, and complete suites by ear starting on various notes.

The Suites are examples of Bach's genius for crafting complex harmonic structures using only single-note melodic lines. I make the point in the video that those musical attributes are what we as improvisers try to create as we play. Weaving creatively and hopefully somewhat effortlessly in and out of harmonic structures. This is why I think Bach is such a great model for us.

This continues my thesis that improvisation is best learned by strengthening one's ear and dissolving the barrier between one's musical mind and the instrument.

Oh, and see how good I look in a powdered wig!
