  • The Best of Elgar

    2:3:50

The Best of Sir Edward William Elgar (2 June 1857 – 23 February 1934)

Although Elgar is often regarded as a typically English composer, most of his musical influences were not from England but from continental Europe. He felt himself to be an outsider, not only musically, but socially. In musical circles dominated by academics, he was a self-taught composer; in Protestant Britain, his Roman Catholicism was regarded with suspicion in some quarters; and in the class-conscious society of Victorian and Edwardian Britain, he was acutely sensitive about his humble origins even after he achieved recognition. He nevertheless married the daughter of a senior British army officer. She inspired him both musically and socially, but he struggled to achieve success until his forties, when after a series of moderately successful works his Enigma Variations (1899) became immediately popular in Britain and overseas. He followed the Variations with a choral work, The Dream of Gerontius (1900), based on a Roman Catholic text that caused some disquiet in the Anglican establishment in Britain, but it became, and has remained, a core repertory work in Britain and elsewhere. His later full-length religious choral works were well received but have not entered the regular repertory.

In his fifties, Elgar composed a symphony and a violin concerto that were immensely successful. His second symphony and his cello concerto did not gain immediate public popularity and took many years to achieve a regular place in the concert repertory of British orchestras. Elgar's music came, in his later years, to be seen as appealing chiefly to British audiences. His stock remained low for a generation after his death. It began to revive significantly in the 1960s, helped by new recordings of his works. Some of his works have, in recent years, been taken up again internationally, but the music remains more played in Britain than elsewhere. Elgar has been described as the first composer to take the gramophone seriously. Between 1914 and 1925, he conducted a series of acoustic recordings of his works. The introduction of the microphone in 1925 made far more accurate sound reproduction possible, and Elgar made new recordings of most of his major orchestral works and excerpts from The Dream of Gerontius.

  • Top 10 Most Beautiful Songs Of All Time

    8:07

For those interested, I made a 2nd Top 10 video with more songs:

Here are some of the top ten most beautiful songs ever written (in my opinion). Please read the description at the very bottom for more information about this video's purpose.
The songs go in a list like this:

    #10 - 0:05
Samuel Barber : Adagio For The Strings , Agnus Dei (singing) version
    -Conducted by Paul Ruskay

    #9 - 0:45
Johann Sebastian Bach : Jesu, Joy Of Man's Desiring
    -Conducted by Leopold Stokowski

    #8 - 1:22
    Johann Pachelbel Canon
    -Conducted by Rudolf Baumgartner

    #7 - 2:02
Jacques Offenbach Barcarolle From the opera The Tales Of Hoffman
-Performed by Elisabeth Werres, Cologne West German Radio Chorus; Conducted by Pinchas Steinberg. Album: FCLS24 Opera Greats 2

*Note: This is a German version of the song. It was originally French. My mistake.

    #5 - 3:49
Pietro Mascagni : Intermezzo (Cavalleria Rusticana)

Ludwig Van Beethoven : Moonlight Sonata , 1st Movement
-Performed By Dubravka Tomsic - Album:
    Classic Dreams

Here is a video I made on my favorite American music (patriotic):

    Please note:
All beauty is subjective. There is no such thing as a true Top Ten list. Each piece holds its own beauty and is neither better nor worse than others. Also, unless it has singing, it is not technically a song. The title of this video is merely meant to help an average person find it, so that beautiful music, and the incredible depth of beauty that comes with it, will be discovered and felt by more people. Also, I have no control over the ads. Google places them because the video has copyright claims.

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (27 January 1756 – 5 December 1791) was a prolific and influential composer of the classical era.
Born in Salzburg, Mozart showed prodigious ability from his earliest childhood. Already competent on keyboard and violin, he composed from the age of five and performed before European royalty. Mozart was engaged as a musician at the Salzburg court, but grew restless and traveled in search of a better position. While visiting Vienna in 1781, he was dismissed from his Salzburg position. He chose to stay in the capital, where he achieved fame but little financial security. During his final years in Vienna, he composed many of his best-known symphonies, concertos, and operas, and portions of the Requiem, which was largely unfinished at the time of his early death at the age of 35. The circumstances of his early death have been much mythologized.

He composed more than 600 works, many acknowledged as pinnacles of symphonic, concertante, chamber, operatic, and choral music. He is among the most enduringly popular of classical composers, and his influence is profound on subsequent Western art music. Ludwig van Beethoven composed his own early works in the shadow of Mozart, and Joseph Haydn wrote: posterity will not see such a talent again in 100 years.

    1:17:09

    The Best of Thomas Tallis (c. 1505 – 3 December 1585)

    Conductor:Jeremy Summerly
    Oxford Camerata

Tallis occupies a primary place in anthologies of English choral music, and is considered one of England's greatest composers. He is honoured for his original voice in English musicianship. No contemporary portrait of Tallis survives: although an engraving by Gerard Vandergucht exists, it dates from 150 years after Tallis' death, and there is no reason to suppose that it is a likeness of the composer. In a rare existing copy of his black letter signature, the composer spelled his last name Tallys. Little is known about Tallis' early life or when he first displayed his musical gifts.

The violin was first known in 16th-century Italy, with some further modifications occurring in the 18th and 19th centuries. In Spain, Italy and Europe, it served as the basis for stringed instruments used in western classical music, the viola and the violin. Violinists and collectors particularly prize the instruments made by the Stradivari, Guarneri and Amati families from the 16th to the 18th century in Brescia and Cremona and by Jacob Stainer in Austria. According to their reputation, the quality of their sound has defied attempts to explain or equal it, though this belief is disputed.

  • Eleanor Alberga Interview | Identity & Aesthetic: Five British-Caribbean Composers

    39:37

The British Music Collection and Sound and Music present Kreutzer Quartet violist and researcher Clifton Harrison curating a series of filmed interviews with five composers who have successfully carved their own path in the British contemporary classical music scene. Listen to their stories and gain a deeper understanding of who they are through their work.

    Notes by Clifton Harrison,

I first met her and her husband Thomas Bowes in 2011 at a chamber music festival in Denmark. It proved to be a wonderful introduction to Eleanor as a person, composer, and pianist. I felt instantly drawn to her and immediately wanted to know more about her and her music. We performed part of her second string quartet that year alongside works by Shostakovich and Mendelssohn. Eleanor also performed some of her wonderful works for solo piano and piano duet. We met professionally again recently at the Arcadia Music Festival, a festival that Eleanor and Thomas run near their home in Herefordshire UK. Eleanor and I sat down and had a chat at the Royal Academy of Music. We discussed her life and passions as well as obstacles and social issues. In this film, Eleanor opens up and allows us to see what has inspired her and her musical style throughout the years. This year, 2019, marks the 70th year of Eleanor Alberga’s birth. A way to support what I do:

Relaxdaily's background music instrumentals: beautiful, light, inspirational music that can be used as a soundtrack for multiple activities. Depending on your interest you might use my music in your relax radio playlist, as yoga music, as music while you're studying, doing homework, working (mentally, creatively), reading, writing, while thinking or reflecting, dreaming, reviewing, making future plans. Some use it as sleep music (I personally think there's better sleep music out there, but it seems to work ;) Some even listen to it in their minecraft music playlist. Call it chillout, smooth, ambient, New Age, instrumental, or background music -- this is not as much about a genre as it is about a feeling. A way of life. With the relaxdaily project, I try to take a little heat from our (generally) too busy lives. I try to deliver a soundtrack for you, when you feel the need for some positive, calming, inspirational tunes.
