  • The Best of Elgar

    2:3:50

The Best of Sir Edward William Elgar (2 June 1857 – 23 February 1934)

Although Elgar is often regarded as a typically English composer, most of his musical influences were not from England but from continental Europe. He felt himself to be an outsider, not only musically, but socially. In musical circles dominated by academics, he was a self-taught composer; in Protestant Britain, his Roman Catholicism was regarded with suspicion in some quarters; and in the class-conscious society of Victorian and Edwardian Britain, he was acutely sensitive about his humble origins even after he achieved recognition. He nevertheless married the daughter of a senior British army officer. She inspired him both musically and socially, but he struggled to achieve success until his forties, when after a series of moderately successful works his Enigma Variations (1899) became immediately popular in Britain and overseas. He followed the Variations with a choral work, The Dream of Gerontius (1900), based on a Roman Catholic text that caused some disquiet in the Anglican establishment in Britain, but it became, and has remained, a core repertory work in Britain and elsewhere. His later full-length religious choral works were well received but have not entered the regular repertory.

In his fifties, Elgar composed a symphony and a violin concerto that were immensely successful. His second symphony and his cello concerto did not gain immediate public popularity and took many years to achieve a regular place in the concert repertory of British orchestras. Elgar's music came, in his later years, to be seen as appealing chiefly to British audiences. His stock remained low for a generation after his death. It began to revive significantly in the 1960s, helped by new recordings of his works. Some of his works have, in recent years, been taken up again internationally, but the music remains more played in Britain than elsewhere. Elgar has been described as the first composer to take the gramophone seriously. Between 1914 and 1925, he conducted a series of acoustic recordings of his works. The introduction of the microphone in 1925 made far more accurate sound reproduction possible, and Elgar made new recordings of most of his major orchestral works and excerpts from The Dream of Gerontius.

  • The REAL Top 10 Greatest British Composers

    2:40:33

    Top 10 Greatest British Composers
I often see British people claim Elgar is the greatest British composer. In reality he isn’t even in the same league as Tallis, Byrd or Purcell. Tallis is the 2nd greatest composer of the renaissance period after his student William Byrd. William Byrd is the greatest composer of the renaissance period he had a huge influence not just in Britain but Europe as a whole, arguably even greater than that of Purcell. He was also the teacher of other famous composers of the age: Thomas Morley, Thomas Tomkins, Peter Philips and Thomas Weelkes. To state how good music in Britain was during this period both Tallis and Byrd managed to outshine even Italian renaissance giants Orlando de Lassus and Palestrina. Henry Purcell, in my opinion, is one of the greatest composers in history, his influence can be heard throughout Europe, yet today he is much more well know on continental Europe than in Britain where he is almost unknown. To show how highly I rate both Byrd and Purcell if Handel was included on this list I would put him 3rd on this list.

    Classical music for dinnertime:

The Choir of King’s College, Cambridge, is one of the world’s best-known choral groups. Founded in the 15th century, it ranks among the oldest of its kind, and, while originally created for singing the daily services in the college chapel, now enjoys an international tour schedule that has seen it perform all over Europe and beyond. Every Christmas Eve, millions of people tune in to watch the choir’s A Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols from King’s – a service which has been continuously broadcast since 1928.

Recorded in 1994, this reissue joins the group’s already extensive discography of Christmas music – recordings that have enhanced its worldwide fame and reputation. The compilation mixes some of the best-loved traditionals, including Once in royal David’s city and O Come all ye faithful, with more recent repertoire – such as Rutter’s rousing What Sweeter Music and Judith Weir’s striking Illuminare, Jerusalem (specially commissioned by the choir for its 1985 annual service). Also featured are traditional German, French, Dutch and Polish carols (including two settings of Dulce Jubilo) – works which, together with Pärt’s enchanting Bogoróditse Dyévo, contribute to a wonderfully eclectic disc that provides over an hour of festive cheer.

    Tracklist:

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (27 January 1756 – 5 December 1791) was a prolific and influential composer of the classical era.
Born in Salzburg, Mozart showed prodigious ability from his earliest childhood. Already competent on keyboard and violin, he composed from the age of five and performed before European royalty. Mozart was engaged as a musician at the Salzburg court, but grew restless and traveled in search of a better position. While visiting Vienna in 1781, he was dismissed from his Salzburg position. He chose to stay in the capital, where he achieved fame but little financial security. During his final years in Vienna, he composed many of his best-known symphonies, concertos, and operas, and portions of the Requiem, which was largely unfinished at the time of his early death at the age of 35. The circumstances of his early death have been much mythologized.

He composed more than 600 works, many acknowledged as pinnacles of symphonic, concertante, chamber, operatic, and choral music. He is among the most enduringly popular of classical composers, and his influence is profound on subsequent Western art music. Ludwig van Beethoven composed his own early works in the shadow of Mozart, and Joseph Haydn wrote: posterity will not see such a talent again in 100 years.

  • The Best of Tallis

    1:17:09

    The Best of Thomas Tallis (c. 1505 – 3 December 1585)

    Conductor:Jeremy Summerly
    Oxford Camerata

Tallis occupies a primary place in anthologies of English choral music, and is considered one of England's greatest composers. He is honoured for his original voice in English musicianship. No contemporary portrait of Tallis survives: although an engraving by Gerard Vandergucht exists, it dates from 150 years after Tallis' death, and there is no reason to suppose that it is a likeness of the composer. In a rare existing copy of his black letter signature, the composer spelled his last name Tallys. Little is known about Tallis' early life or when he first displayed his musical gifts.

  • Eleanor Alberga Interview | Identity & Aesthetic: Five British-Caribbean Composers

    39:37

The British Music Collection and Sound and Music present Kreutzer Quartet violist and researcher Clifton Harrison curating a series of filmed interviews with five composers who have successfully carved their own path in the British contemporary classical music scene. Listen to their stories and gain a deeper understanding of who they are through their work.

    Notes by Clifton Harrison,

I first met her and her husband Thomas Bowes in 2011 at a chamber music festival in Denmark. It proved to be a wonderful introduction to Eleanor as a person, composer, and pianist. I felt instantly drawn to her and immediately wanted to know more about her and her music. We performed part of her second string quartet that year alongside works by Shostakovich and Mendelssohn. Eleanor also performed some of her wonderful works for solo piano and piano duet. We met professionally again recently at the Arcadia Music Festival, a festival that Eleanor and Thomas run near their home in Herefordshire UK. Eleanor and I sat down and had a chat at the Royal Academy of Music. We discussed her life and passions as well as obstacles and social issues. In this film, Eleanor opens up and allows us to see what has inspired her and her musical style throughout the years. This year, 2019, marks the 70th year of Eleanor Alberga’s birth. • Saint-Saëns: Chamber Music

    1:6:54

    Streaming & Downloads:
    Physical Sale:
    Facebook Brilliant Classics:

    Composer: Camille Saint-Saëns
Artists: Soloists of the Accademia di Santa Cecilia Rome, Akanè Makita (piano), Andrea Oliva (flute), Francesco Bossone (bassoon), Stefano Novelli (clarinet), Francesco Di Rosa (oboe), Alessio Allegrini (horn)

The wind instrumentalists here are members of Rome’s main orchestra, attached to the Accademia nazionale di Santa Cecilia, and their previous disc on Brilliant Classics with Akanè Makita, of chamber music by Henri Dutilleux (BC94738) won recognition both for the original combination of repertoire and the stylish performances: ‘Francesco Bossone and Akanè Makita do the work proud, playing with real character and in excellent balance with each other’ (Musicweb International).

Here they turn to the instant charms of the chamber music by Camille Saint-Saëns, centred around the three sonatas for oboe, clarinet and bassoon. All written within the year 1921, they are the work of a composer who was born 10 years after the death of Beethoven and whose lifetime overlapped with the dawn of jazz in Europe. Little wonder, then, that such pieces embody a remarkable synthesis of styles, to the extent that they hardly seem to be by the same composer as the highly embellished chamber music for strings or the grand statements of the symphonies. They do, however, retain a sense of dramatic dialogue that runs through the composer’s output, for Saint-Saëns was always a theatrical composer even when not writing for the stage. The constant stream of melodies speak of a master of refined simplicity and unfailingly elegant lightness of spirit.

The two Romances for horn and piano date from much earlier in the composer’s prolific career (1874 and 1885); they proceed not in the compressed version of sonata-form belonging to the later works, but in narrative sections which range from sweetly nostalgic to the turbulent or heroic. Rounding off this irresistible collection is the Op.79 Caprice on Russian and Danish Airs for flute, oboe, clarinet and piano: here is the cheerful Saint-Saëns of the Carnival of the Animals, running through folk tunes and their transformations with balletic grace and fluidity, underpinned by a brilliant, impetuous piano part that shows what a virtuoso this multi-talented composer was in his own right.

  • Alexis Ffrench - Bluebird

    3:49

UK contemporary composer Alexis Ffrench has unveiled the stunning video for his brand new single ‘Bluebird’.
► Stream or download Bluebird here:
► Sheet music for 'Bluebird' and other tracks on 'Evolution':

Teaming up with his daughter Savannah, a 2nd prize International Dance World Cup winner, the visually striking video showcases her partaking in an impassioned dance performance in the gorgeous Blackheath Halls, London. The blissful sequence is intercut with a spotlight-soaked portrait of Alexis playing the piano - a visual that is a truly beautiful family affair.

Of the song, Ffrench says; “I wanted to write something with a certain immediacy that spoke to people and connected with them, as that’s always at the forefront of my mind. The training for a classical musician is steeped in words and academia, but my main aim is always to communicate with people. When I produced ‘Bluebird’, I had the pleasure of working with the Brno Philharmonic Orchestra, Czech Republic, and legendary mix-engineer John Bailey (Coldplay, John Legend, Paloma Faith).

‘Bluebird’, for me, is filled with a variety of influences, from Debussy and Satie, and is an expression of love and hope. It is born out of improvisation. I wanted to write something that expressed a certain innocence and purity. There’s so much trauma around us right now and I wanted to share a moment of calm, beauty and consolation. There isn’t enough of that in the world.”

    19. Nobuo Uematsu - Waltz for the Moon 13:38

Artist for the Viennese waltz paintings - Vladimir Pervunensky
The waltzes are compiled in no particular order.

Dance with the Balamb-Fish is not a waltz, nevertheless I thought it would be appropriate to add both of Nobuo Uematsu's dance themes.

  • CREATIVE CRIBS - Jon Opstad

    40:17

Fellow shed alumni Jon Opstad takes us through how he has built up a demand for his work by developing a unique way of working with synths, samples and tape to deliver scores for the likes of #blackmirror and #tomclancysrainbowsixsiege that are out of the ordinary.

For more info about Jon's work go here:

    ...and here's that TAL sampler:

Jon Opstad is a London-based composer, working across film, television, contemporary dance and concert music. His music often combines contemporary classical elements with electronics, merging acoustic instrumentation with both modern and vintage electronic instruments and techniques.

Recent work includes scoring the upcoming 10-part science fiction drama The Feed for Amazon, starring David Thewlis, Michelle Fairley, Guy Burnet & Nina Toussaint-White; scoring the 5-part BBC period drama The Woman In White, starring Jessie Buckley, Dougray Scott, Charles Dance & Art Malik; and composing all the new music since early 2018 for the major Ubisoft video game Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Siege, taking the place of original composers Ben Frost and Paul Haslinger.

Other television scores include two episodes of Charlie Brooker’s cult dystopian Netlfix/Channel 4 series Black Mirror (White Bear, and the feature-length special White Christmas starring Jon Hamm); the second series of ITV thriller Safe House, starring Stephen Moyer; 5-part BBC thriller Thirteen, starring Jodie Comer; the acclaimed BAFTA-winning Channel 4 docudrama The Murder Detectives; BAFTA-winning BBC single drama Don’t Take My Baby from writer Jack Thorne; BAFTA-nominated TV movie Cyberbully starring Maisie Williams; Channel 4’s The Watchman, starring Stephen Graham; and the Savile episode of Louis Theroux’s hard-hitting documentary series for BBC Two.

In summer 2019 Jon’s composition ‘Ignis IV’ was used as the score for the trailer for the upcoming film Ad Astra, starring Brad Pitt and Tommy Lee Jones.

Jon studied music at Cambridge University and film music at the National Film & Television School. After graduating he began his career by working extensively as an additional music composer, programmer and orchestrator for a range of composers including Jocelyn Pook, Max Richter, Martin Phipps, Ruth Barrett, Sheridan Tongue and Richard Thomas, across many film, television and stage projects. Jon was also additional music composer for the Oscar-nominated film Theeb.

Jon’s music often combines his classical training with a progressive approach to electronic music, as shown in his upcoming score for The Feed, which is scored for string orchestra, analogue synthesisers, vocals and electric guitars.

Jon contributed synthesiser parts and string arranging to the track ‘Smoke’ from singer-songwriter Tracey Thorn’s acclaimed 2018 album Record.

Jon was nominated for a British Composer Award in 2014, in the Stage Works category, for his score for contemporary dance work Ignis, combining solo violin with electronics. He was the winner of the 2011 Presteigne Festival competition for composers. Radio broadcasts of his music include BBC Radio 3’s Late Junction and In Tune programmes, as well as New Sounds on New York radio station WNYC, for which Jon was interviewed discussing his music in 2015.

  • ???? Haydn String Quartet The Lark - Classical Music for Relaxation - Haydn Best Classical Music

    16:33

Haydn String Quartet The Lark - Relaxing Classical Music for studying and concentration.
    Follow us on Facebook ►
    Web ►

Franz Joseph Haydn String Quartet 'The Lark', Hob. III:63

    1. Lark - I. Allegro Moderato 00:00
    2. Lark - II. Adagio, Cantabile 6:11
    3. Lark - III. Menuetto Allegretto 11:02
    4. Lark - IV. Finale Vivace 14:48

Joseph Haydn's string quartets, sometimes catalogued as Op. 64 are a set of six string quartets composed in 1790. Along with six earlier quartets published under the opus numbers 54 and 55, they are known as the Tost quartets, after the Hungarian violinist and later merchant Johann Tost who helped Haydn find a publisher for the works. Unlike the earlier quartets, Haydn actually dedicated the Op. 64 set to Tost in gratitude for his efforts.

Franz Joseph Haydn (1732 - 1809), known as Joseph Haydn, was an Austrian composer, one of the most prolific and prominent composers of the Classical period. He is often called the Father of the Symphony and Father of the String Quartet because of his important contributions to these forms. He was also instrumental in the development of the piano trio and in the evolution of sonata form. A lifelong resident of Austria, Haydn spent much of his career as a court musician for the wealthy Esterházy family on their remote estate. Isolated from other composers and trends in music until the later part of his long life, he was, as he put it, forced to become original. At the time of his death, he was one of the most celebrated composers in Europe
