On The Shoulders Of Giants by Peter Graham

  • Dynasty - Black Dyke Band conducted by Nicholas Childs

    16:29

Dynasty was premiered at the 2019 British Open Brass Band Championships and pays tribute to one of the brass community's legendary figures, Harry Mortimer (1902 - 1992). Using key passages from Mortimer's autobiography On Brass as the source for the narrative and in keeping with the heritage nature of the subject, the work takes the form of a Symphonic Poem, a musical structure first introduced to contest audiences at the Crystal Palace in 1913. The work opens with a four-note leitmotif and the timeline unfolds as follows:
0:06 1 - Harry (One's destiny decided at birth “I'll make him the best cornet player in England”).
2:21 2 - War (Why do the nations so furiously rage together? Fred volunteers for military service)
3:50 3 - Theatre (And suddenly “I dashed to the rescue like a hero in the silent movies I was about to get to know so well”)
4:34 4 – Journey (Rejoice greatly “A new life in Cheshire with a promising band called Foden's”)
6:45 5 – Together (Come unto me “A golden age”)
7:48 6 – Farewell (For behold, darkness “Fred's death surely marked the passing of an era”)
11:30 7 – Amen (The Trumpet shall sound - Farewell reprised)

When I Survey - Olaf Ritman - Soloist Matthew Luhn and the New York Staff Band (Bandmaster Derek Lance) perform the trombone solo When I Survey by Olaf Ritman at the NYSB's 131st Annual Festival at West Side Presbyterian Church in Ridgewood, NJ on April 21, 2018.

When I survey the wondrous cross
On which the Prince of Glory died
My richest gain I count but loss
And pour contempt on all my pride

Forbid me Lord that I should boast
Save in the death of Christ, my God
All the vain things that charm me most
I sacrifice them to His blood

See, from His head, His hands, His feet
Sorrow and love flow mingled down
Did e'er such love and Sorrow meet
Or thorns compose so rich a crown

Were the whole realm of nature mine
That were an offering far too small
    Love so amazing, so divine
Demands my soul, my life, my all

  • Metropolis 1927 - Peter Graham

    16:10

The Black Dyke Band perform Metropolis 1927 by Peter Graham at the New York Staff Band's 129th annual festival held on March 19, 2016 at the Centennial Memorial Temple in New York City.

Fritz Lang's 1927 science fiction epic Metropolis is considered to be a masterpiece of cinematic vision and a high point of German Expressionist filmmaking.
Set in a future dystopian world the film introduces the viewer to two contrasting communities living in the vast city of Metropolis. Those
above ground live a life of privilege and pleasure serviced by the underground-dwelling drone workers whose role is to maintain and operate the banks of machines which provide the city's power.
Lang's film, which can be considered a type of 20th century morality play, draws upon a range of themes and influences from Marxist ideals and social satire to overt religious symbolism.
The music does not attempt to precise the plot, such as it is, but simply reflects my musical responses to Lang's noirish visual style and set designs – the brooding machine rooms, the decadent nightclubs, the gothic cathedral and so on – paradoxically a world of terrifying beauty.

Metropolis 1927 was commissioned by Bramwell Tovey and The National Youth Brass Band of Great Britain with funds provided by The Arts Council of England. The first performances took place
in the Winter Gardens, Weston-super-Mare on Saturday 19th April and in the Cheltenham Town Hall on Sunday 20th April 2014.
This revised version was premiered by The Black Dyke Band, conductor Nicholas Childs, at the 38th European Brass Band Championships in the Konzerthaus Freiburg, Germany, on Saturday 2 May 2015.

When considering this new recording from the New York Staff Band, there are many exciting aspects that are worth highlighting. We are privileged to feature as soloist, Salvationist Philip Cobb, who is an extraordinary trumpet and cornet player known all over the world. This recording features an epic work from the pen of Dr. Dorothy Gates, “The Glory of Jehovah,” which has already had a profound debut in Canada earlier this year.

This recording also contains many wonderful new compositions from established and rising stars in the brass band world, including a new piece by Tom Davoren, “Proclamation.”

A proclamation is defined as “a clear declaration of something.” Davoren’s piece, featuring the hymn “Stand up, stand up for Jesus,” is designed to proclaim, when it’s used at the beginning of each of our programs, and at the start of this recording, that Jesus Christ is Lord and that we, as the New York Staff Band, will stand up for Jesus.

    Stand up, stand up for Jesus! ye soldiers of the cross;
Lift high His royal banner, it must not suffer loss:
From vict’ry unto vict’ry, His army shall He lead,
Till every foe is vanquished, and Christ is Lord indeed.

We want to use our abilities and talents to spread salvation through Jesus Christ as far as we are able, by the grace of God. We proclaim Jesus Christ: “And there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.” Acts 4:12 (ESV)

    John 10: 7-11 KJV
    7. Then said Jesus unto them again, Verily, verily, I say unto you, I am the door of the sheep. 8. All that ever came before me are thieves and robbers: but the sheep did not hear them. 9. I am the door: by me if any man enter in, he shall be saved, and shall go in and out, and find pasture. 10. The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly. 11. I am the good shepherd: the good shepherd giveth his life for the sheep.

    Titus 3: 4-7 KJV
    4. But after that the kindness and love of God our Saviour toward man appeared, 5. Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost; 6. Which he shed on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Saviour; 7. That being justified by his grace, we should be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life.

Lyrics by Brian Gene White / Janna Long / Joe Beck / Sam Mizell

Life, lived in the world of chaos
Leaves me feeling lost and so alone
Oh, I'm searching for a reason to hold on
But I know there's new light with every dawn
Where peace beyond my understanding waits
Through the power of the cross
    Christ will give new life

    Chorus:
Abundantly, more than I could ever know
    Where amazing is so ordinary
    And mercy overflows
Abundantly, and love will open up my eyes
    If I'm willing to believe
Christ will give new life abundantly

Now I give You my heart completely
It's the only way that I can truly live
Nothing I have found could ever satisfy
Like giving You all of my life oh, no
And thank You for the grace You showed to me
Through the power of the cross
And the love that I receive

    Bridge:
See, I was looking for a reason
Someone to carry me through, oh yes
But, oh, I found the Lord in you
(All that I found was You)
