October 02, 2015 by SURAYA MOHAMED
In 2012, my kids introduced me to Lianne La Havas' debut album, Is Your Love Big Enough? One play and I was hooked; I've been a fan ever since. Her music works for any activity, any emotion.

The first time I saw La Havas live, I was unprepared for the experience: Her music touched my heart in a way I'd never experienced before. I cried through the entire performance. Her music was that powerful, with lyrics woven together with beautiful harmonies; it pulled emotions out of me I didn't even know existed.

La Havas is soulful yet playful, raw and vulnerable in a commanding kind of way, and her new second album, Blood, is as amazing as the first. In this Tiny Desk performance, she plays two new songs — What You Don't Do and Unstoppable — as well as Forget, from her first album. She and her talented collaborators, James Wyatt on piano and Frida Mariama Touray on backing vocals, rehearsed this special arrangement during the sound check just moments before the performance. It's wonderfully intimate, with just guitar accompanied by vocals that embellish without getting in the way. If you're like me, you will never get enough.

    Blood is available now.

  • Lianne La Havas: Tiny Desk Concert

    13:54

The Tiny Desk is working from home for the foreseeable future. Introducing NPR Music's Tiny Desk (home) concerts, bringing you performances from across the country and the world. It's the same spirit — stripped-down sets, an intimate setting — just a different space.

May 5, 2020 | Suraya Mohamed -- Something special happens when Lianne La Havas performs an acoustic set. Our audience agrees; her first appearance at the Tiny Desk in 2015 is one of the most popular Tiny Desk Concerts of all time. We are thrilled to have her back, this time performing from her home in London.

She looks quite comfortable in her cozy space. I love the effect of the close camera placement; her essence penetrates the fourth wall like she's singing just for me. Lianne performed the tender Paper Thin and Bittersweet, two recent singles that will be included on her self-titled new album set to drop in July. The intimacy of the performance matches the lyrics of the new songs, personal vignettes about her life and growth over the last five years. Also included in the set is Midnight, a wistful gem from her 2015 album, Blood.

    SET LIST
    Paper Thin

A native of South London, with Greek and Jamaican parents, La Havas began teaching herself to play piano, write songs, and sing at the age of seven. Her family’s diverse taste was very influential, when she was a child, her grandparents babysat her often: “They’re from Jamaica, so when I was growing up I listened to a lot of religious reggae–almost hymns, but in a reggae style–on cassettes. But at the same time my mother was listening to a lot of '80s and '90s Michael Jackson, and Mary J Blige, who I loved from a very early age. Plus India Arie, Jill Scott and The Fugees”.

Lianne’s biggest hits include “Green and Gold”, “Unstoppable”, “Gone”, as well as an incredible cover of Dionne Warwick’s “I Say a Little Prayer”, and a show stopping Tiny Desk performance for NPR Music. Her catalogue also includes the albums “Blood” and “Is Your Love Big Enough”

    Can't Fight lyrics

It seems that I won't be warned
And certainly, I saw a sign
I raged like a woman scorned
But something about you got me gone
You're pulling me back and now I'm going under

A little peace, a little love
A little bit, is that enough?
I can't fight away this love
I knew that I should give you up
I tried to run but got my heart stuck
I can't fight away this love
    Can't fight away this love

The things that I want and need
But they always seem to be at odds with me
    Oh, why?
When did Heaven get this heavy?
    Everything's right until it's wrong
But something about you feels like home
Oh, baby, you know that you got me gone
You're pulling me back and now I'm going under, oh

Lianne announces the release of a two-part video with Noisey.com and Essence.com for singles Elusive and Gone. Director Colin Solal Cardo (La Blogotheque) said of their partnership:

I've been collaborating with Lianne for more than a year now, but working on this project felt like something completely new. Lianne's a brilliant storyteller, there's a true cinematic quality to her songs. When you listen to them, you go through all these emotions and narratives, like a collection of short movies. We felt like it was finally time to build a world around these songs, give life to these love stories and let Lianne actually become these characters. Be it a candid young girl falling in love, or a heartbroken femme fatale in the middle of the woods. I feel fortunate for the trust relationship I have with Lianne, it's something any music video director has to cherish because it's rare and precious. Ultimately, that's what allows an ambitious project like this one to exist.

Lianne’s biggest hits include “Green and Gold”, “Unstoppable”, “Gone”, as well as an incredible cover of Dionne Warwick's “I Say a Little Prayer”, and a show stopping Tiny Desk performance for NPR Music. Her catalogue also includes the albums “Blood” and “Is Your Love Big Enough”.

    Lyrics:
    Baby
You see me in a magic place
I got here with real good reason
    Heaven with another face
    Got me feeling so high

Baby I’m living in a magic place uh
It’s showin me that god’s a woman yeah
So maybe you should worship me
    Yeah I’m reigning the skies

    Oooh
You ain’t gotta tell me where to go when to come down
Ain’t be working this hard for the throne just to fall now
I guess you gotta wait cause I don’t wanna come down
    Yeah I’m feeling so high

If god is a woman on Sunday imma worship us
Take my mirror out the bag and fill it with confidence.

Yeah a woman’s worth is everything without you baby .. uh
Put your blinkers on if you don’t wanna see it baby
If it all falls down I’ll make another way again cause I’m feeling so high

    Take it
Can’t take it all from me (don’t let don’t let don’t let)
    Break it
Can’t break if off from me
    Got me feeling so high

    Light it out um
    Light it out
Play at nothing just ride it out
You’re never lonely if you’re feeling doubt
Yeah we’ve all been through it
Let it go in then say it out
Hold your head up and wear your crown
There’s never know way that you’re coming down
    Got us feeling so high

“Feel (feat Lianne La Havas)” by Jacob Collier [OFFICIAL AUDIO] from Djesse Vol. 2

Lianne La Havas must have one of the most delicious, deep, versatile, scintillating and gorgeous voices on the planet... she has been a fave of mine for so many years. She came over to my music room at home one evening in May 2018 and by 4am we had recorded all the vocals. It was magic from her first note.

Pino completely transformed my life (and the whole world of bass) forever with his sublime low-note contributions to D’Angelo’s iconic “Voodoo” album - and I asked him if he wouldn’t mind playing some bass on this song to bring some of that magic that only he can bring! When he sent the file my jaw dropped. So freakin’ special.
